Pedal PowerFor a number of months now I have been cycling seriously to keep up a level of fitness, apart from playing basketball, and this usually means a 12k cycle in the mornings at 6.30am but as the days getting shorter with the onset of winter, it’s more like 7am these mornings. It’s a fantastic time of day to cycle the old railway line from Blackrock to Passage or along the foreshore from Blackrock Castle to Rochestown, as the world wakes up and the huge flocks of different wading birds go about their business in the Douglas Estuary and Loughmahon. One morning this week I was on my cycle near Jacobs Island when I caught the sun rise above the horizon, it was a wonderful moment and as I always carry a camera (even a pocket camera when on the bike), I was able capture the moment. I must say that I find cycling a great way to get fit and stay healthy and there is a scheme for companies to encourage employees to cycle to work – for details check with your local bicycle shop. The Douglas Post will be doing a feature on cycling shortly so watch this space to see the benefits of pedal power and some of the equipment available while taking you through some of the rules, laws and highway code regarding cycling.

Continued Success! In this climate of recession it’s great to see businesses launching and trading, recently Denim Addiction opened at Douglas Court Shopping Centre offering high quality clothing for men. Ali Barbers have opened just across the road from us here at The Post offering a range of cuts and services, while Fitness Solutions have many classes, weight loss programmes and fitness regimes to suit with free parking at Marina Commercial Park, Centre Park Road. Continued success to all!

Families Should Not Be Deprived Of Their HomeNo family should loses their house due to inability to pay their mortgage and Government should establish this as a fundamental principle of its policy in relation to housing and distressed mortgages in cases where a family makes an honest effort to pay their mortgage. To date the Government has indeed introduced alleviation measures which have worked to a point - a two year moratorium; deferred payments; interest only payments; mortgage interest supplement. However, present measures are not adequate to deal with this increasing problem and the circumstances faced by homeowners struggling to pay their mortgages. In response I believe that there is need for a safety net for such families, over and above what is available where the other avenues have been exhausted. For example it should be possible to go to a Personal Debt Management Agency. This Agency should have the legal powers to provide protection from the creditors of families and homeowners with distressed mortgages so that no family home is repossessed and the family members left homeless."It should have the legal authority to buy time to sort out financial affairs and to pursue other avenues including personal bankruptcy for those who have made every effort to resolve their financial difficulties. We live in difficult times and austerity measures are necessary but retention of the family home must be a red line for this Government.

New bus stops to help hundreds of workersCork South Central Fine Gael TD Jerry Buttimer has said that bus stops at University Technology Park should be in place within a matter of months. Deputy Buttimer received confirmation of the developments from Bus Éireann in response to a letter to the authority.Deputy Buttimer said “for over a year Bus Éireann, Cork City and Cork County Council towards introducing bus stops at University Technology Park. The issues of land ownership, Garda permission and funding have now been addressed and it is expected that these bus stops will be in place within a matter of months.“The businesses in University Technology Park provide employment for a large number of people, one company alone employs about 800. For years there has been no direct public transport link to their place of work, new bus stops at this location will be improve accessibility and help hundreds of workers. If we are to encourage public transport use we must provide direct links to their place of work"Bus Eireann has also extended the number eight service to continue to the relocated Marymount Hospice which has opened at Curraheen. This will facilitate the many people who visit and use the services offered by Marymount."

Billy McCarthy is a founder member of the Douglas Writers Group and has recently launched his first book entitled “Barnetstown to Ballinglanna”. The book is a selection of short stories and poems taken from his earliest experiences in life to the present day. He even includes two poems by his son Pádraig and two by his granddaughter Ciara. Billy writes in a style that is worthy of any tradition Irish writer and yet has all the modernity of the present day. Our poem this week taken from his book is a fine example of Billy’s lyricism.

SWEET BALLINGLANNA

Of Sweet Ballinglanna tonight I am Dreaming,My thoughts ever winging ‘way back to the time,

When youthful and merry we crossed o’er the ferry,As the sound of soft music came over the brine.

We joined in gay dances and later went roaming,The fishermen homing we passed on the way,

The moonlight was shining, no wonder I’m piningFor Sweet Ballinglanna in exile today.

Now my heart still returns down the road by the meadowWhere we strayed ‘neath the moonlight before we did part

Where the shimmering wavelets sweep over the shingleOn Sweet Ballinglanna, the queen of my heart

Oh, pride of my homeland your memories still haunt me,In dreams how they taunt me wherever I roam,

For though I may wander in exile, I ponder,And still I grow fonder of my dear old home.

Now to think of the evenings we spent by your watersMaking our plans as we strolled hand—in-hand,

Those times are long gone but we’ll always rememberYour dark towering cliffs and your bright golden sand.

For my heart still returns down the road by the meadow,Where we strayed ‘neath the moonlight before we did part,

Where the shimmering wavelets sweep over the shingle,On sweet Ballinglanna the queen of my heart..

Out and About with Fergus O’LearyMonday a week ago I was sitting in a cab heading for the airport to come home from Rome and it was the last thing I wanted to be doing. I would have done nearly anything to be able to tell the driver to turn round and take us back. I think that Rome is the most beautiful place.Firstly you have, of course, Ancient Rome. The Ancient Romans claimed that their city was founded in the six hundreds BC which, even allowing for a degree of imagination, means a constant occupation of two and a half millennia and the evidence of most of this is there before your eyes. The Coliseum, the Forum and the Palatine Hill all speak volumes for their ingenuity ( they invented concrete, of which the Coliseum is built ) their power and their artistry. Then of course there is the splendour of St. Peters Basilica, every inch of it displaying objects of breathtaking beauty, each a testament to man-kind’s creative genius, especially when inspired by religious devo-tion. The Sistine chapel is worth the queuing, all the more so because of the splendid Vatican Museum. Then there are the piazzas. High Baroque architecture, fountains and cobbled pavements all under a bright sun and a clear blue sky. Then there are the buildings that are of both Ancient and modern Rome. The Pantheon, once a temple to all the pagan gods of Rome, now a church dedicated to Our Lady and full of lovely devotional objects. Or the Castel Sant’ Angelo, built by

Hadrian as his mausoleum, then taken over by the papacy for use as a fortress, then as a prison. The views over the city from the castle are stupendous.Just as attractive are the Victorian streets and squares. Fine five or six storey apartment buildings, the squares built around public gardens growing date palms and exotic shrubs. The most memorable thing, though is the buzz, crowds of people all en-joying their visit to the Eternal City.If you haven’t been to Rome, go. It won’t cost you any more than a trip to the Canaries and you will see a place that is unforgettable and in-comparable.

Using curtains and blinds to help insulate your windowsWindows are the weak link when it comes to insulating our homes. They are responsible for the majority of heat loss from your house. Here are some ideas for using curtains and blinds to help reduce heat loss and keep us cosy on long winter evenings. In general good heavy curtains with a good lining and or interlining will dramatically reduce the amount of cold getting in or heat seeping out through windows and doors. When it comes to windows the more layers of good quality fabrics the better. Medium weight fabric with a good lining is the minium, blackout lining is not only very efficient at blocking light but excellent at keeping out the cold as well. Interlining is a blanket like fabric which is put between the fabric and lining giving three layers and much better insulating qualities. On older or very draughty windows keeping curtains resting on the floor also helps reduce heat loss. Here at Curtain Creations not only can you get your curtains made up

from scratch but we can also alter your existing curtains. We can reline or interline as required often saving on expensive fabric. Readymade curtains will greatly benefit from relining with blackout lining. Also never be tempted to skimp on fullness the more fabric in the curtains not only do they look much better but will improve insulation. On very cold nights it is a good idea to pull your blinds and curtains as well. Also closing your curtains in bedrooms early when heating is on will retain the heat for longer. Where curtains cover a radiator it is a good idea to put up a complimentary roman blind ideally blackout lined using the blind instead of the curtains thus retaining the heat in the room. Finally apart from the insulation properties well made curtains using a well chosen fabric greatly enhances the warmth and cosiness of any room and lessens the echo associated with hard surfaces.

Find the perfect fusion of form and function at White’s Tiles & Kitchens

White’s Tiles & Kitchens has acquired a loyal base of customers over the past 20 years, who return time and again to their comprehensive showrooms just off Clonakilty’s Bypass Road. With sound advice and in-store designers, customers are guaranteed a lifetime of enjoyment from their kitchens, bathrooms, stoves, fireplaces and floors. The core product of the business has always been their high-quality hand-made kitchens and storage solutions. The lower level of the showroom displays just some of the beautiful kitchens available. Craftsmen create each tailor made kitchen in their workshop so you are guaranteed quality and that the kitchens are fully finished on deadline. And with a complete fitting service you can just relax and anticipate the pleasure of cooking in your new kitchen. White’s Tiles & Kitchens now have their biggest and most exciting range of bathroom ware displayed in pods around the showroom, which allow you to visualize how your new bathroom might look. With these stoves you can enjoy the wonderful wood heat, the superb styling, easy and clean maintenence and have a clear conscience! as burning wood is a CO2 neutral process. The CO2 captured in the wood is simply released again, so the wood gives off the same amount of CO2 as if it were decomposing on the forest floor.White’s range of wood burning stoves are extremely efficient, enabling them to utilize nearly all the energy in the wood. The smoke coming out of the chimney consists mainly of water vapours, resulting in a minimum strain on the environment. These stoves have the highest heat efficiencies for wood stoves on the European market, and Whites are the only supplier in Cork. The stoves come in all styles – traditional, contemporary, free standing and inserted.Visit the showrooms from Monday -Friday 9am – 6pm and Sat 9am-5pm or call 023-8834848. or www.whitestiles.com

Can You Reduce or Even Eliminate Pain Naturally? Nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) are commonly used to reduce pain and inflammation but can sometimes have risky and unwanted side effects, which can include intestinal and stomach ulcers and bleeding, liver and kidney toxicity and, sometimes, even death! Reducing inflammation naturally will help lower the level of pain present in the body, keep your joints and muscles healthier and decrease the risk of many chronic degenerative diseases, including the number 1 killer, heart disease. Some of the best foods and herbs that have natural anti-inflammatory properties are: curcumin found in the spice turmeric, gingerols found in ginger, gum resins found in boswellia, bromelain enzyme found in pineapple, papain enzyme found in papaya, quercetin found in onions (especially the outer layers - thus avoid over-peeling your onions), thiacremonone found in garlic, and salicin (similar to aspirin) found in white willow bark. Many greens are known for their natural anti-inflammatory

qualities as well, such as the eugenol in basil, rosmarinic acid in rosemary, kaempferol in kale and whole food vitamin C in parsley and cilantro. There are many more but this is a good starting point. In a previous article I wrote about how to increase omega-3 and decrease omega-6 fats in your diet. This is very important to decrease inflammation in the body. A key tip is to add flax and chia seeds to increase omega-3 and to drastically decrease processed foods to lower the omega-6,Lastly, if you are suffering from pain, this is usually a warning sign that your nervous system is sending disrupted signals and telling you that something is not right. Often the source of the pain, especially muscle or joint pain, is due to abnormal stress being placed on the tissue. Wouldn't it make sense to first find out what's causing this stress and pressure by having your spine and nervous system checked by a qualified Doctor of Chiropractic?Learn more by attending my wellness presentation, “Creating Boundless

Energy” on Wed. Oct. 12th, 2011 @ 7:00pm. Reserve your free seat today by calling 021-436-0009.

Seasonal Affective DisorderSeasonal affective disorder (SAD) is a condition where you develop symptoms of depression in the darker winter months each year. In Ireland and other countries north of the equator, the symptoms usually develop sometime between September and November and continue until March or April. Symptoms tend to be worse in December, January and February. At least 1 in 50 people in Ireland are thought to have SAD. Many more, perhaps as many as 1 in 8 people, have 'winter blues' - a less severe form of the condition. SAD is less common in countries near to the equator where the hours of sunlight are more constant and bright throughout the year. SAD usually first begins between the ages

of 20 to 30, but it can develop at any age. It affects four times as many women as men.

What are the symptoms of seasonal affective disorder? When symptoms develop in the winter, they are similar to those that occur in the non-seasonal 'ordinary' type of depression. The following is a list of common symptoms of depression. You may not have them all, but several usually develop:Low mood for most of the day, nearly every day. Things always seem 'black'.Loss of enjoyment and interest in life, even for activities that you normally enjoy.Abnormal sadness, often with weepiness.Feelings of guilt, worthlessness, or uselessness.Poor motivation. Even simple tasks seem difficult.Poor concentration. It may be difficult to read, work, etc.Sleeping problems.Lacking in energy, always tired.SAD can markedly impair quality of life in winter. Symptoms tend to improve and go fairly quickly in

the spring, over a week or so. Some people develop great bursts of energy and creativity in the spring. In a small number of cases, as spring arrives the mood changes from depression into an abnormal 'high' and elated mood (mania or hypomania).

Light therapy for seasonal affective disorderThis treatment consists of sitting in front of a special bright light for a session each day and/or using a dawn simulator. Light intensity is measured in lux. Ordinary light bulbs are not strong enough as they only give out 200-500 lux. To treat SAD you need a light source of at least 2500 lux (about 10 times that of ordinary light bulbs).

If you think you are suffering from S.A.D. contact your G.P. for an appointment to discuss your options. If you would like more information on S.A.D. or light therapy, contact Garvan at Lynch’s Pharmacy on 4366923.

Honda strengthens Accord range for 2012. Universal Honda is pleased to announce the introduction of a new 180ps Type S diesel option to the Accord range for 2012. The Type S 180PS engine is combined with a 6-speed manual transmission to maintain the high performance driving experience whilst improving the overall efficiency of the engine resulting in lower running costs. The exterior of the Type S 180PS, with its 18” alloy wheels and aero bumpers and side sills, has a sporty look that reflects what is under the bonnet. The car is equipped with a high beam support system with Bi Xenon head lights and active cornering lights.

Standard features include Leather upholstery and electrically adjustable heated front seats; advanced dual zone climate control linked to the satellite navigation system to detect the position of the sun and sets the temperature accordingly. Cabin noise has also been reduced through innovations that include a floating sub-frame structure with insulated carpets, all adding to an enriched driving experience.‘The new Accord 2.2 diesel 180ps Type S will appeal to the motor enthusiast who appreciates the bespoke styling, sophisticated safety features and high levels of specification which, unlike

most competing premium brand products, actually come as standard. With a retail price of €39,465 this model compliments the launch of the new Accord range in April this year and will help us achieve 450 Accord sales in 2012 ‘ said Frank Kennedy, Sales and Marketing Director of Universal Honda. Type S 180PS is combined with a 6-speed manual transmission and the chief aim of the engine and transmission development was to maintain the high performance driving experience whilst improving the overall efficiency

of the engine resulting in lower running costs. Power output is at 180PS/32KW at 4,000 rpm while peak torque is 380Nm@2000 – 2750rpm. That means improved engine flexibility reflected in an 8.8 second 0-100 time and a top speed of 220km/h. Emissions are below Euro 5 levels and combined fuel consumption at 5.6l/100km is even more frugal. Equally CO2 emissions are just 147g/km.Honda Accord has been voted No 1 in the family car category in independent surveys carried out by JD Power for the last two years in both UK and Germany.

Calvin Harris warned by Rihanna fans about new song, her navy threatened him on Twitter, stating the tune "better not be rubbish".Calvin Harris has revealed that Rihanna's fans warned him that his new single with the Barbadian beauty, We Found Love, had "bet-ter not be rubbish."Harris, who has produced the infec-tious tune, told press that Rihanna's followers - often called Rihanna's Navy - were keen for the song to be a hit, adding extra pressure on the Scottish DJ.Speaking of the track - which has already blasted its way to No.5 on the US iTunes chart - the Bounce hitmaker confessed: "It was crazy all the fans on Twitter, tweeting me saying: 'The song better not be rub-bish' before they heard it.""There were some mild threatening nature to them, but it's all part of the fun. She sounds great on it." The 27-year old added: "I love the tune. Loved it for a while and I'm glad that it's out there finally."Harris previously stated on Twitter that he thought Rihanna "sounded like an angel" on the track, and that he was "so happy" her fans liked it.Rhanna's ex-boyfriend Chris Brown also appeared to be a fan of the song after he retweeted the lyrics "Sometimes it feels like we found love in the most hopeless place" - later deleting the post after realising his message had been picked up by the media. We Found Love got its first play last week and is to be Rihanna's first single from her currently untitled new album - due for release on 21st November.

“In the gardens leaves are turning. Bright leaves whirl about the square. Along the windy street they dance. A festal touch is in the air….Up the walls and round the sills in City Street and country lane – Autumn hangs her glowing garlands as the creepers fade again.” - As usual we try to give you a few ideas on what might need doing in your garden this week. Not everything in this article may apply to your garden - but there might be something, if not this week maybe next week.

Flower Garden Move established peonies very carefully by the end of the month. Start taking hardwood cuttings of roses, and root in a sheltered bed. Lift dahlias as soon as the foliage blackens; cut down the stems, and stand upside down indoors to drain for a fortnight. Collect ripe seeds from perennials, dry and store. Prepare new rose beds, digging and weeding the ground thoroughly and adding plenty of manure or compost.

Kitchen Garden Finish lifting all potato crops; dry

and store. Spread straw or fleece over root crops such as carrots and swedes left in the ground. Finish planting out spring cabbage - the rest can safely be left until February. Make sure enough manure is on order for vegetable cropping plans.

Lawns and Hedges Rake leaves promptly from lawns or mow and collect with a rotary mower.

Greenhouse Put tender fuchsias to bed for the winter strip off all leaves, and

Garden Competition Congratulations to this weeks winner Kathleen Howard of Grange. Kathleen wins a 50 Euro voucher from Kiernans Garden Centre, Douglas Court. Our Summer Gardening Competition has come to an end for this year. We would like to thank all those who submitted entries, congratulate all the winners and our condolences to those who didn’t make it this time. But there’s always next year! In spite of our harsh Spring the standard this year was exceedingly high, and trying to choose a winner each week was a very difficult task and there were many worthy entries that time simply ran out on, but rest assured; in today’s climate every gardener is a winner.

pack in boxes of compost. Pot up divisions of dicentra, astilbes, lily of the valley, and other spring plants for early flowers under glass. Check heaters are working efficiently and stock up on fuel. Test heater thermostats according to temperature regime: 40C (400F) frost-fee, 70C (450F) cool, 100C (500F} temperate. Bring in pots of freesias started in July. Finish opening melons by exposing fruits to the sun and keeping plants slightly dry.

Water Garden Install pond heaters, or float tennis balls or polystyrene pieces

to relieve ice pressure on liners.

In General Move frost-shy container plants under cover and insulate others with sacking or bubble polythene. Start raking leaves and stack or pack into black plastic bags to decay into leafmould. Construct raised beds for fussy plants and vegetables, or where drainage is poor, and leave all winter to settle.

G.A.A. FOCUSSnippets from the Local and National SceneBy Pat HarringtonThe Lesser of Two Evils‘It couldn’t happen to a nicer county’; ‘They got what they deserved’. Those were some of the remarks made by people after the Kerry vs. Dublin all-Ireland football final. The remarks were directed at the defeated Kerry team. One could well say they are the remarks of jealous Rebels. Of course Cork football has suffered at the hands of Kerry in Croke Park more than any other county in the last decade. On the day I shouted for The Dubs, my view being that Kerry had won enough. This game may not have been a classic but it was compelling viewing. Two of Gooch’s scores were absolutely superb; the goal was sublime. As the game progressed the intensity was huge, and the drama as the encounter entered the final eight minutes was unreal. At this stage Kerry fans were planning the

usual ‘Welcome Home Sam’ in Killarney. From here to the finish the game was turned on its head. The Jacks are BackDublin defeated Kerry for the first time since 1977. The vanquished have humbled The Dubs on a number of occasions since then. The Liffeysiders are already predicting a golden era of Dublin Football domination. I say one is enough; any more and we would be unable to tolerate them. All the professionals, pundits and bookmakers got their predictions completely wrong for the Cork county senior hurling championship.Carrigtwohill would have been perceived as contenders for relegation; they have been fighting to stave off the threat over the past few years, but their victories over Cloyne and Midleton have shown them to be a team with great determination and character. The Midleton club had the marquis players in Haughney, Farrell and Lehane – all players with huge potential. Winning is about putting scores on the board. Carrig outscored Midleton on the day and so reached their first county

final in years.C.I.T. players are drawn mostly from intermediate clubs in Cork and many have represented the County at different levels. The students have had very impressive victories over Érin’s Own and Newtownshandrum and will go in as warm favourites.Ticket Prices (arís – arís)The county board would be very foolish to up its ticket prices again for the county final (15 euro for the semi-finals). C.I.T. will have little support and the encounter will do well to draw a crowd of 6,000/7,000.Minor Premier County FinalWell done to Douglas minor footballers on a tremendous comeback to draw with Ballincollig in the premier county final at Páirc Uí Rinn on Sunday evening. Colourful ProgrammeCongratulations to Coiste Chorcai on a well-produced match programme, informative, colourful and free!! The Mayfield Brass & Reed Band added to what was a very enjoyable occasion.More next week, Pat

The game was eventually decided inan exciting penalty shoot-out, with the home side winning out by the narrowest of margins. Colm Kennedy, Charlie Goff, Luke Ward, Declan Donovan and net minder Sean O'Doherty shone throughout.Umbro U-15 National CupKilreen Celtic 4 ; Douglas Hall 0 In a below par first- half, the visitors found themselves four down at the break. In a much improved second-half the Hall managed to keep their premier opponents scoreless with excellent contributions from Conor O'Driscoll and Conor O'Regan.Douglas Hall A 1; Midleton 6The visitors led four-nil at the interval playing with the aid of a strong wind, before Aaron Duggan reduced arrears when scoring from an acute angle on the hour mark, following good approach work by Conor O’Leary . Ben Fitzgerald’s penalty opened the scoring in the first-half, before goals from Daniel O’Sullivan

David O’Connor scored from a free-kick to open the scoring inside three minutes, with a brace from Craig Madden setting up a frantic closing to a high scoring contest.Beamish Stout Munster Senior LeagueDouglas Hall 1; Mayfield Utd. 5Indiscipline cost the Hall who succumbed to their first league defeat of the season. After Deccie O’Connell fired the home side into the lead, the visitors ran out comfortable second-half winners after the Hall were reduced to eight.

A dramatic comeback by a spirited Douglas team denied favourites Ballincollig the coveted premier minor county football championship title at Pairc uí Rinn last Sunday evening. Denied the serv-ices of Paul Fitzgerald and Seán Healy through injury Douglas’ luck seemed to have completely dissipated when Seán Collins joined the injury list at the interval. However, it is to the credit of the Douglas players that despite setback after setback they refuse to accept every convenient excuse to fade away and instead have doubled their efforts and fought to remain in the com-petition.

With ten minutes remaining Ballincollig led by five points and Douglas looked dead and buried. However, Douglas stepped on the gas and the increased intensity was best characterised by Ro-nan Whyte, Eric O’Connor and Caolan Mulroon-ey, each of whom raced forward towards the heart of the Ballincollig back line. Meanwhile, Brian Lenihan came in and succeeded in occupy-ing the Ballincollig defence which allowed captain Alan Cadogan more freedom to profit from the direct deliveries from his team mates. Paul Beale fielded a few vital balls and Seán Fogarty and Ca-dogan kicked points. The Douglas management introduced Adrian O’Connell and this proved to be an inspired substitution. A couple of points down and with the clock ticking towards full time

the stage was set as Douglas needed a saviour. Unfazed by what was at stake O’Connell kicked two points, Josh Kra added another deep into in-jury time and Douglas live to fight another day.

Midleton 3 Corinthian Boys A 2Corinthian Boys B 3 Douglas Hall A 1It’s onto the next round of the National Cup for the boys as they took control of this tie from the start to continue their impressive form so far this season. Daniel Hurley on the left and Paul Barry on the right were proving to be a handful for the Douglas Hall defence and with great delivery from both into the box it was always only a matter of time before the boys got off the mark and captain Karl Hyde duly obliged finishing exquisitely with his first opportunity. Dylan Virgo doubled the boys lead soon after with a thunderbolt shot that left the Douglas Hall keeper rooted to the spot. The boys made it three on the 40 minute mark when new signing Davie Scott with his first touch after coming on as sub drilled a cross into the box that deflected off a defender and nestled into the top corner. Scott again went close just after with

a deft chip over the keeper that unluckily found the side netting. Douglas Hall got one back before the end when Liam McCarthy in goal who had been faultless all day failed to collect a ball that skidded off the turf and across the line. He more than made up for it moments later however with a series of saves that kept the game beyond the opposition. Great performances also from Joe Cremin and Adam Walsh at the back for the boys.

Under 15National CupCorinthian Boys 3 Everton 2The U15 Division 1 team came out on the right side of 3-2 thriller at Castletreasure in the National Cup on Saturday against a gallant Everton side. Corinthians started brightly and soon went into the lead when Barry O’Callaghan reacted quickest to tap home from five yards after a good save from the Everton keeper. Corinthians doubled their lead after twenty

minutes when Simon Lougheed unleashed an unstoppable shot from all of thirty yards to leave the Everton keeper with no chance. Everton kept their heads however and pulled a goal back after half an hour. Everton were on top at this stage and with the benefit of a stiff breeze they lay siege to the Corinthian goal for the remainder of the first half. Corinthians were lucky to go in a goal up at half time. Corinthians however got back on top in the second half and pulled two goals clear when Sean Powter finished well after a great run from Liam O’Sullivan. Everton kept fighting to the end and they reduced the deficit to one with minutes to go following a free conceded by Corinthians on the half way line. It was too late however and the referee blew for full time shortly afterwards much to the relief of Corinthians. Best for Corinthians on the day were Sam Collins, Sean Powter and Barry O’Callaghan while Brian Barry had a great second half following a shaky start.
