I can’t believe

it’s already September and a new school year has started! The Collierville Literacy Council has also been preparing for a new year. The staff used July to ensure the student and tutor data from the previous year was complete and accurate.

We are amazed when we look at the number of students we served last year:

352 GED students 181 English as a Learned Language students 35 Adult Literacy students.

Of the GED students, 101 earned their GED diploma and one also earned her citizenship.

So it seems appropriate at this time to thank all of the volunteer tutors (who donated over 6,000 hours of their time), the office volunteers who spent over 650 hours helping the staff, and our Board of Directors, who are also volunteers, donated about 500 hours of their time during our

Do you know someone who would make a good tutor ? If so, let them know about our next training dates!

2011: September 9 & 10

November 18 & 19,

Friday , 6-9pm Orientation/New Tutors Saturday , 9am–12:30pm GED, ELL & Literacy 101

For those of you previously trained tutors who have not attended a “101” Saturday class… we invite you to do so! You will have new “tricks” for your “Tutor Bag!”

RSVP today! —call 854-0288!

Sharing the Good – From the Monthly Tutor Reports you send us, we learn of many creative

and interesting ways you, our tutors, are helping your students. We learned that Rosario has started a new job, in Midtown...her improved English skills helped her with that! Don and his student, Salvador, go back over a book when they’ve finished it, just for review...a great idea! Leon is reading bedtime stories out loud to share with his grandchild. Katrina plans to begin college this month, so she and her tutor doubled up on their meetings to help her pass the GED. Hong’s tutor got to explain what “snow angels” are to her. Maybe she’ll get a chance to demonstrate this winter?! Kathy and Lin are working on restaurant menus and place settings at the table. Janet and Alessandra worked on letters of appli-cation to various businesses last spring...we know it helped! Alessandra is working full time now! Sue

and Usha have visited each other’s place of worship. Meera continues to make us smile with her observations of her students’ progress. Sometimes our tutors need to stop...a move, a change in health for them or a family member, a change in employment. One such tutor is going to attend divinity school. We wish David well. Jisu is working on medical pamphlets with Shelly...and trying to figure out “southern restaurants!” Otis surprised his wife by picking out some very nice Father’s Day cards...he was sure smiling as he told this to Vikki. We look forward to hearing of others getting their citizenship...Hee Young and

Claudia are working hard on this...for next year.

Tutors/Volunteers — Save the Date! Volunteer Appreciation Dinner Monday, September 12, 2011 at 6:30 p.m. Incarnation Catholic Church 360 Bray Station, Collierville

Jeanne & Hong … talking about snow angels??

June was a very good month for one of our students. Nadia was thrilled to get her U.S. Citizenship AND she passed the GED!!

2010-2011 year. Our staff of 5 part-time employees are not volunteers, but their constant, caring efforts on behalf of students also should be recognized.

In addition to donations of time, there are many individuals, churches, businesses, community groups , the Town of Collierville, and foundations who supported our work.

As you can see, this past year was truly a community effort, and when this many people come together for a good cause, exciting things are bound to happen!

We’re looking forward to another great year and hope that we’ll continue to have your support.

Karen

We, at CLC, are always delighted when our GED graduates are ready to have transcripts of their scores sent to a college for admission. They get the transcript request forms from us, but send them to UT Martin to have them processed. Some of those who have made these requests recently are Kathy B., Brittany H. and Carina K. for SWCC, Jessica H. for Christian Brothers University, and Jasper M. for University of Memphis. Rita’s students, Ai N. and Jan P. are enrolled at U of MS now! One of our GED grads, Paul S., who has attended TN Tech, is starting a job in the Dallas/Ft. Worth area this month. Thanks, Leslie, for your help. We are so proud of our stu-dents, and of their tutors who help them and make such a dif-ference.
