School Closings/Late Openings/Early Dismissals For information as to whether the school will be closed, opened late, or closed

early, please sign up for Alert MCPS at

www.montgomeryschoolsmd.org/emergency/alertmcps.aspx. You will

receive emergency information from the school system via SMS test, e-mail, or

pager. You may also listen to the radio/TV for information on school

closings/late openings and early dismissals. On early dismissal days all Recreation Department and

After-School Enrichment programs are cancelled. Be sure your child knows where to go when

school closes early. Please do not call the school for this information.

Delayed openings are always 2 hours late therefore students may begin to arrive at 11:05am and

will be considered tardy after 11:25am. Students are dismissed at 1:20pm when there is an Early

Dismissal.

ESOL (English Speakers of Other Languages) Testing ACCESS for ELLs is the state-mandated test of English language proficiency administered to ESOL

students annually. The test results are used to demonstrate the progress Maryland State ESOL students

are making in speaking, listening, reading and writing.

ESOL testing has begun! Due to the test administration responsibilities, ESOL classes are cancelled

during the testing period. All students currently enrolled in the ESOL program are taking the

assessment. Also, any student who was identified for ESOL service but did not participate in ESOL

classes are being assessed. The test results will be shared with the parents when they are available in

spring.

Read-A-Thon The Read-A-Thon is back!! The Read-A-Thon begins today and lasts for 2

weeks, January 11-January 25! It is our PTA Winter Fundraiser, but more

importantly, it encourages your child to read, read, read! Please look in

your child's backpack for a packet that is coming home today. Review the

packet, sign the participation slip, and gather pledges. Bring your

participation form back in on Monday to be entered for a raffle prize! Remember to record reading

minutes each day. This year our fundraiser has a special goal. Half of the money raised will go to

our new TV Studio! Let's try to get 100% of our students participating! Please send any questions

about the Read-A-Thon to Janine Hackett, [email protected].

Yearbook Cover Contest

ATTENTION STUDENT ARTISTS! All students in grades K-5 are

invited to submit a drawing for the 2018-2019 yearbook! A green

flyer with all the details went home earlier this week and is also

attached to this Dolphin’s Tale. Please sign and have your child return

this flyer with their drawing entry. The deadline for submissions Is Wednesday, January 23, 2019.

Grade 3-5 Winner: Yearbook’s Front Cover

Grade K-2 Winner: Yearbook’s Back Cover

We will also be choosing an additional winner from each grade that will be used as the introductory

page for that grade’s section of the yearbook. All winners will receive a special prize with their

drawing printed on it!

Entries will be judged by Travilah staff on creativity, relevance, and craftsmanship of image. Entries

must be original student work. Questions?? Please contact Mrs. Barrett

([email protected]). See the flyer for tips on creating your most successful entry!

Cold and Flu Season

As you are aware, the cold and flu season has begun. Please keep your

children home from school if they are sick. The county’s policy is that a

student must be fever free, without fever reducing medication, for 24

hours before they can return to school. Additionally, a student who is

on an antibiotic must be on the antibiotic for 24 hours prior to

returning to school. If your child has been vomiting, please keep

him/her home so we can control the spread of these germs. Please see the attached sheet from the

Montgomery County Department of Health and Human Services. Feel free to call the health room if

you have further questions. Thank you for helping us keep everyone healthy.
