board cornerAnnetta Patrick, Women's Association President

A new year means new beginnings and fresh starts. For the La Cumbre Women’s Golf Association, the New Year brought us NEW rules to learn and appreciate, NEW tee box loca-tions that enhance our golf experi-ence, NEW course ratings to keep our handicaps competitive, three NEW members that quickly became NEW friends, and NEW benches on which to sit and reflect on our good

fortune. The WGA has also jumped on the tech bandwagon, and left paper in the past. All golfing event registration is now done online with ForeTees, and the GHIN app has made post-ing scores at home and away as easy as a few key strokes. We’ve come a long way with these new beginnings and fresh starts.

While much is new, we still have the tried and true… Tuesday Play, under the direction of Tournament Chair Karen Anne Platt, continues to challenge our members with innovative games, and a mix of tee choices. Guest Days for the year have been carefully planned by Cynthia Krueger. Her clever themes and attention to detail continuously delight all participants. Both Intracity and Gold Coast Team Play offer our members the chance to hone their competitive skills. Kathy Keller and Nancy Falberg have captained this ship very competently. La Cumbre brought home the gross win in Intra-city but ran into a very difficult draw for Gold Coast. MJ Baumgartner was our tournament chair for The Club Championship, which was a match play event this year. Sue Wilcox rules as the 2019 Cham-pion, with Chris Portney as runner-up. Jane Lodas won the net competition. In April, our Spring Fling Tournament, “Roses and Rosé” was co-chaired by Gaile Haslem and Tracy Jenkins. They did a spectacular job. “Cheers!” to these first timers. “On Broadway” was the theme for this year’s Member-Guest Tour-nament. Lee Drummy, assisted by Barbara Lowes and Kathy Keller, hosted a fabulous two-day event. Add to the mix; the guidance of Evan, the flair of Sandy and Casey, the talents of Chef Eric, and the wonderful course conditions- courtesy of Wayne and his crew, and you’ve got yourself a tournament to beat all tournaments. Many thanks to all of the helping hands that make La Cumbre CC shine in the spotlight. Summer Team is nearing an end. Barbara Lowes and Alison Hedge are this year’s captains. The team is doing well, and a win is anticipated. (fingers crossed)

Now we are on the downhill side of the year, but there are still many fun events in our future. The Better Ball of Partners single elimination tournament will be run by Allison Dittmann. The Fall Ringer, to be played from Gold/Green Combos and chaired

2

by Sarah deTagyos will showcase our eclectic abilities. The Solheim Cup will offer an exciting competition, hosted by Sheila Davidson and Marnie Pinsker.

The Ms. Witch October guest day, orchestrated by Lynn Wells and Annetta Patrick, will thrill and chill members and guests alike. The Women’s Senior Championship chaired by Jane Atwater will honor our seasoned golfers. The Tur-key Shoot, run by June Brusse, will get us into the holiday mood. This will be followed by the festive Holiday Guest Day, chaired by Candy Short and Marnie Pinsker. Finally, we will enjoy the Holiday Mixer, where we will be SPARCing Joy to a very worthwhile charity, thanks to Stina Hans and Lynn Pearl.

Other chairs and officers to be recognized for 2019 are; Ace Day- Chriss Zubas, Hole in One- Joan Tomeo, Rules- Sue Wilcox, Handicap- Suzie Swenson, Secretary- Kathy Keller, Treasurer- Karen Carey, Communications- Nancy Falberg, Hospitality- Chris Portney, Parliamentarian- Sally Smith, SCGA Liaison- Lee Drummy, Photo Wall- Pat Aiken, and Nin-ers- Linda Gamble. I am honored and grateful to know such a wonderful group of talented, dedicated and competent women.

Thom & Anne Goodsen & Gail & Dale Haslem

Message from our Chair Linda Gamble:The Niners extend a warm welcome to our new members Judy Jones and Andrea Banks. We meet every Friday in front of the golf shop between 8:15 and 8:30 to play the back 9. On the last Friday of the month, we play a Scramble Mixer. We are open to members of all levels of play. For more information con-tact Linda Gamble at [email protected] or Jill Winchester at [email protected]

Three ways to sign up for Fridays play: sign up online, call golf shop or just be ready to play in front of the golf shop be-tween 8 am and 8:15 am. After golf everyone is encouraged to gather at the Patio Bar & Grill for coffee and conversa-tion.

The Country Hoedown Nine & Dine was held Sunday, Au-gust 11th with much success and “hee-hawing”. It was, of course, a Texas Scramble along with beer tasting, western attire and a delicious western-style dinner.

Note that there will be no Niner Friday golf on September 13th as the club will be preparing for the Chase tournament. The Niner yearly dues are $25 and will be charged to your account in January 2020 unless you choose to discontinue membership.

Court Calendar for September

John Kinsella, USPTA Tennis Professional The relaxed tennis days of summer gives way to the frantic pace of September. La-dies’ Interclub, Men's Senior League, Junior Team Tennis, Junior Clinics and Pickleball all fight for space on the September tennis schedule.

Coming EventsSeptember 4th begins the Ladies’ Interclub nine-month season. La Cumbre Country Club will again field four full teams with over 60 ladies participating. Hopes are high for the men's 65 and over team with the addition of new recruits. Junior team ten-nis features teams of boys and girls in 11 and under and 14 and under divisions. A fun new men's tennis workout clinic keeps the Thursday evening 5:30 time as the men's league concludes. Pickleball and wine keeps its Friday night spot with a September 27th date.

Court ScorecardMen's Interclub enjoys a spectacular three match winning streak before dropping a tough match to league leading Cathedral Oaks. La Cumbre CC defeated Polo, Knollwood and Las Positas com-fortably to rise into a seeded position for the upcoming playoffs.

Teke Meisel won the 10 and under singles division in the recent royal Invita-tional tennis tournament.

It is with great sadness that we mourn the loss of our Duplicate coordinator and director, Jo Lindros and her husband Carl. Jo gave her all in organizing the Friday afternoon duplicate game. Calling and mak-ing sure the tables would be filled, doing lunch with guests and members, and scoring at the end of each game. She and Carl were both ace bridge players and contributed to the game for many years. In fact, with Larry Yanover, they were instrumental in the establishment of the Santa Barbara Bridge Center.

Both will be greatly missed by La Cumbre and the Santa Barbara Bridge Community.
