This definition incorporates the major points of the term as defined by the NIH, DHHS, ICMJE, ICH GCP E6, FDA, WHO and the clinicaltrials.gov website. 2 Other types of clinical trials include prevention, treatment, vitamin, symptom management and radiation.

Greenville Health System - Extramural Proposals Fiscal Year 2016 – 3rd Quarter

The Office of Sponsored Programs reports that GHS faculty and staff members submitted the following 18 proposals, requesting a total of $12,000,591, during the third quarter of fiscal year 2016.

Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology Dr. Melisa Holmes: The Duke Endowment Teen Health Center The focus of this project is to address the need for teen-friendly health care by establishing a collaborative and multidisciplinary model of comprehensive and holistic care for adolescents. The project will initially focus on teen pregnancy prevention as well as improved access to timely and effective prevention and treatment for other conditions that threaten the health and well-being of adolescents and young adults. Project Dates: 01/01/2017 – 12/31/2019 Total/Direct: $2,210,556 Cost Share: $627,008 Dr. Bruce Lessey: NIH via Michigan State University/University of North Carolina Endometrial Lipoxin A4 (LXA4) and the Pathophysiology of Endometriosis The goals of this project are to 1) Determine the hormonal and cycle regulation of LXA4 production in normal women compared to women with endometriosis; 2) Examine the differences in endometrial signaling pathways used by LXA4 in normal endometrium and endometrium from women with endometriosis; and, 3) Correlate the phenotype of LXA4 over-expression and changes in receptors for LXA4 in endometriosis to the cytokine/chemokine milieu and study the down-stream effects. Project Dates: 04/01/2017 – 03/31/2022 Total: $813,280 Direct: $520,000 Indirect: $293,280 Dr. Bruce Lessey: NIH via Michigan State University Endometrial MIG-6 and Progesterone Resistance The goals of this project are to 1) Study the functional association between MIG-6 and ErbB2 signaling in endometriosis; 2) Determine pathophysiological functions of MIG-6 loss in endometriosis associated infertility; and, 3) Evaluate therapeutic potential of ErbB2 inhibitor in infertility and endometriosis associated with MIG-6 loss. Department of Internal Medicine Dr. John O’Connell: Department of Defense Sequencing of targeted kinetic nanotherapies with decoupling of deiodinase regulated thyroid hormone signaling to extinguish breast cancer metastases The goal of this research is to eliminate the mortality associated with metastatic breast cancer. The primary aim is to revolutionize treatment regimens by replacing interventions that have life-threatening toxicities with ones that are safe and effective. Dr. Larry Puls: Ovarian Cancer Research Fund Woman to Woman Woman to Woman will help focus and enhance programs aimed at GHS' female patient population with gynecological cancers. It will also help link a crucial population of women survivors to a platform of psychosocial deliverables that include mentoring, education and support. Project Dates: 07/01/2016 – 06/30/2017 Total/Direct: $50,000 Kathy Fincher: Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics Foundation Diabetes Medical Nutrition Therapy in CenteringPregnancy This innovative research project will provide evidence that diabetes medical nutrition therapy (MNT) provided by certified diabetes educator registered dietitians in an obstetrician’s office, following the CenteringPregnancy model, will improve maternal and fetal outcomes in pregnant women with gestational or pre-gestational diabetes. Project Dates: 10/01/2016 – 09/30/2018 Total/Direct: $20,000 Dr. Jeff Edenfield: NIH via Clemson Rational Development of Point of Care Sensors for Cancer Treatment Progression For this project, Dr. Edenfield will provide access to samples in the GHS bank, provide clinical expertise, and direct the offsite tests. Department of Pediatrics Dr. Desmond Kelly: NIH via Clemson Maternal diabetes and childhood obesity-environmental and behavioral influences The proposed study will use unique research designs and analytical models to shed light on the early origins of obesity and cardiometabolic diseases to prospectively address multilevel modifiable factors that could be targets for obesity interventions. Karen Merritt: March of Dimes Cafeteria Vouchers for NICU Families This grant will provide cafeteria vouchers for distribution to families in the NICU, particularly families whose baby/ies are in the NICU for an extended period of time (over two weeks). The intent of the funding is to remove some of the barriers that prevent families from being able to spend time with their baby/ies. Project Dates: 07/01/2016 – 09/30/2016 Total/Direct: $1,500

Department of Nursing Academics Dr. Joy Green-Hadden: AHRQ via Clemson Developing and Disseminating a Virtual Reality Simulation Platform to Proactively Improve Medication Safety in Hospitals for Nurses in Medical-Surgical Units GHS will support the project goals which include understanding variations in how nurses prepare, administer and transport medications within the context of other medication and non-medication activities, identifying environmental conditions (physical, operational, social) that impact the medication process (preparation/documentation/ transportation/ administration), and assessing nurses’ insight about medication processes and safety culture. Project Dates: 05/01/2017 – 4/30/2020 Total: $33,707 Direct: $21,552 Indirect: $12,155 Valorie Brooks: Daisy Foundation Dissemination of Findings for Breast Cancer Survivors Perception of Change after Chemotherapy Project The Lynne Doll Grant will be used to fund travel expenses to one professional conference and disseminate findings from a previously completed and successful J. Roger C. Peace Rehabilitation Hospital Dr. Kevin Kopera: Department of Veterans Affairs GHS/RCP Adaptive Sports Outreach This program will encourage and enable disabled veterans and service members to participate in sports and learn how they can resume activities they enjoy or learn new activities by using adaptive sports equipment. It will also provide a multi-tiered approach to adaptive sports that addresses the veterans’ current abilities and helps to build physical and mental strength. Clinical University Dr. Matthew Hudson: NIH Exploring Patients' Amenability to Providing Social, Psychological, and Behavioral Determinants of Health Data This proposed work will examine whether cancer patients provide information on potentially sensitive issues, such as drug use, environmental safety concerns, and strength of social networks. This work is important because these types of factors can influence access to, type of, and impact of cancer care. The research team will use these findings to refine strategies for requesting this information. Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology Dr. Amy Crockett: NIH via Clemson Reducing Disparities in Birth Outcomes: A Randomized Controlled Trial on Centering Pregnancy This project is a sub-contract from Clemson University (CU) and is a randomized, controlled trial (RCT) design to investigate the efficacy of CenteringPregnancy group prenatal care (GPNC) compared with individual prenatal care (IPNC) on rates of preterm birth and racial disparities in birth outcomes among Non-Hispanic White and Non-Hispanic Black women in an underserved population. Department of Child Advocacy Lorraine Cragan-Sullivan: Centers for Disease Control and Prevention Learn the Signs. Act Early. (LTSAE) Ambassadors Program The overarching objective in applying as a LTSAE Ambassador is to integrate the work of LTSAE and Help Me Grow SC (HMG SC); enhance developmental promotion, early detection, and linkage to services. HMG SC is poised to become a statewide system within the next three years, which will allow HMG SC to reach the most vulnerable children. George Maynard (Office of Institutional Advancement): Sanders Family Foundation University of South Carolina School of Medicine Greenville - Paladin Scholarship GHS is requesting funds on behalf of the USCSOM Greenville for a medical student scholarship designated for a Furman University graduate. A three-member panel will select a Furman student who has been accepted into the USC School of Medicine Greenville (USCSOMG). Clinical University Dr. Brenda Thames: Wells Fargo MedEx Academy This grant will fund scholarships, stipends, and other costs for deserving students from throughout South Carolina to participate in all tiers of the GHS MedEx Academy. The funding will not only provide educational benefits to individual students, but it will also serve to strengthen developing partnerships between GHS and Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs). Students from HBCUs have been represented 40 times in Tiers 1-4 since 2011 and GHS plans to dramatically increase that amount through our partnerships. In addition, it will build on the support that Wells Fargo has provided in the past to USC and Clemson academics by strengthening the pathway to health professions for their students.
