TTNABS 1 : LESSON 10

THE DIVINITY OF CHRIST AND THE HOLY SPIRIT

In the previous lesson, on the Nature of Jesus, we established that

Jesus Christ is undeniably the One true Almighty God

DEUTERONOMY 6:4 (NKJV) 4 ‘Hear, O Israel: The LORD our God, the LORD is one!’

The following is a combined study exploring the Deity of Christ, the Anointed One and the Holy Spirit The word Christ means ‘Anointed One’ Although One and the same Person, our study contains separate references and focuses as there are unique characteristics to Christ and the Holy Spirit respectively 1. THE INCARNATION OF CHRIST IN JESUS 1.1 CHRIST JESUS IS THE FORM OF GOD

PHILIPPIANS 2:6 (NKJV) 6 who, being in the form of God, did not consider it robbery to be equal with God

DEF : FORM = MORPHE (Greek)

(Phonetic : mor-fay')

= The nature or essence, not in the abstract but, as actually subsisting in the individual (Page 463, Vines Expository Dictionary)

HEBREWS 1:3 (NKJV) 3 who being the brightness of His glory

and the express image of His person, and upholding all things by the word of His power, when He had by Himself purged our sins, sat down at the right hand of the Majesty on high

DEF : IMAGE = EIKÓN (Greek) (Phonetic : i-kone')

= Jesus is the ‘visible’

representation and manifestation of God

COLOSSIANS 1:15 (NKJV) 15 He is the image of the invisible God, the firstborn over all creation

HOWEVER

Although He was the firstborn over all creation, He made Himself of no reputation

PHILIPPIANS 2:7 (NKJV) 7 but made Himself of no reputation, taking the form of a bondservant, and coming in the likeness of men

Jesus did not boast of His position as firstborn, or of His heavenly glory, but rather emptied Himself of any claim or right to it, submitting it to the One who gave it to Him He took upon Himself the form of a servant and was made in the likeness of men, being obedient as a son, even unto the point of death The Christ took upon Himself (clothed Himself) in human flesh, but, as such, did not stop being God

Page 3: THE DIVINITY OF CHRIST AND THE HOLY SPIRIT · The fact that the Holy Spirit is a person, and not an impersonal force, is confirmed by the following : 3.1 PERSONAL SENSIBILITY Signifying

EXAMPLE :

As a bridegroom puts on his garments and is identified by his clothes, but is still a person separate from his clothes

EVEN SO

Christ Jesus existed as God And in becoming man, He did not stop being God but simply clothed Himself in human flesh (different clothes or form)

HEBREWS 10:5 (NKJV) 5 Therefore, when He came into the world, He said: ‘Sacrifice and offering You did not desire, but a body You have prepared for Me’

Before His incarnation, Christ was ‘in the Father and the Father in Him’ He was and is, one with the Father, as established in our previous studies (John 14:10 and John 10:30) To cleanse us from sin, God had to come in a body to die for us through the shedding of blood By coming in a body, God did not stop being God

1.2 GOD WAS IN CHRIST

2 CORINTHIANS 5:19 (NKJV) 19 that is, that God was in Christ reconciling the world to Himself, not imputing their trespasses to them, and has committed to us the word of reconciliation

Page 4: THE DIVINITY OF CHRIST AND THE HOLY SPIRIT · The fact that the Holy Spirit is a person, and not an impersonal force, is confirmed by the following : 3.1 PERSONAL SENSIBILITY Signifying

1.3 THE WORD WAS GOD

JOHN 1:1 (NKJV) 1 In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God

JOHN 1:14 (NKJV) 14 And the Word became flesh and dwelt among us, and we beheld His glory, the glory as of the only begotten of the Father, full of grace and truth

The correct rendition of the scripture is ‘the Word (God) became flesh’

ONCE AGAIN In becoming human, God did not stop being God

HEBREWS 13:8 (NKJV) 8 Jesus Christ is the same yesterday, today, and forever

1.4 GOD WAS MANIFEST IN THE FLESH

1 TIMOTHY 3:16 (NKJV) 16 And without controversy great is the mystery of godliness:

God was manifested in the flesh, justified in the Spirit, seen by angels, Preached among the Gentiles, believed on in the world, received up in glory

DEF : MANIFEST = PHANEROS (Greek) (Phonetic : fan-er-os')

= Reveal

God was revealed and manifested in the flesh This does not mean that Jesus Christ was flesh only

Page 5: THE DIVINITY OF CHRIST AND THE HOLY SPIRIT · The fact that the Holy Spirit is a person, and not an impersonal force, is confirmed by the following : 3.1 PERSONAL SENSIBILITY Signifying

Jesus, the man, carried the Christ, the anointed essence of the character, nature and divinity of the Father

As such, we worship Jesus Christ as the One and Only True

God

2. HOW DO WE ACKNOWLEDGE AND WORSHIP CHRIST? 2.1 ARTICULATION (THE DELIVERY THEREOF, THE

VOICING OR VERBALIZING OR ACT) 2.1.1 ADORATION

JOHN 20:28 (NKJV) 28 And Thomas answered and said to Him, ‘My Lord and my God!’

2.1.2 CONFESSION

ROMANS 10:9 (NKJV) 9 that if you confess with your mouth the Lord Jesus and believe in your heart that God has raised Him from the dead, you will be saved

2.1.3 THANKSGIVING

1 TIMOTHY 1:12 (NKJV) 12 And I thank Christ Jesus our Lord who has enabled me, because He counted me faithful, putting me into the ministry

2.1.4 SERVICE

COLOSSIANS 3:24 (NKJV) 24 knowing that from the Lord you will receive the reward of the inheritance; for

you serve the Lord Christ

2.1.5 PRAYER

ACTS 7:59 (NKJV) 59 And they stoned Stephen as he was calling on God and saying, ‘Lord Jesus, receive my spirit’

1 CORINTHIANS 1:2 (NKJV) 2 To the church of God which is at Corinth, to those who are sanctified in Christ Jesus, called to be saints, with all who in every place call on the name of Jesus Christ our Lord, both theirs and ours

JOHN 14:14 (NKJV)

14 If you ask anything in My name, I will

do it 2.2 KNEELING

PHILIPPIANS 2:10 (NKJV) 10 that at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, of those in heaven, and of those on earth, and of those under the earth

2.3 PROSTRATION

Falling down and worship as described in :

REVELATION 5:8 (NKJV) 8 Now when He had taken the scroll, the four living creatures and the twenty-four elders fell down before the Lamb, each having a harp, and golden bowls full of incense, which are the prayers of the saints

Page 7: THE DIVINITY OF CHRIST AND THE HOLY SPIRIT · The fact that the Holy Spirit is a person, and not an impersonal force, is confirmed by the following : 3.1 PERSONAL SENSIBILITY Signifying

REVELATION 1:17 (NKJV) 17 And when I saw Him, I fell at His feet

as dead. But He laid His right hand on me, saying to me, ‘Do not be afraid; I am the First and the Last’

The purpose of the Holy Spirit was, and is, also to reveal and glorify Jesus as the Christ

JOHN 16:14 (NKJV) 14 He will glorify Me, for He will take of what is Mine and declare it to you

JOHN 16:13 (NKJV) 13 However, when He, the Spirit of truth, has come, He will guide you into all truth; for He will not speak on His own authority, but whatever He hears He will speak; and He will tell you things to come

Christ Jesus is God

Failure to believe that, is extremely dangerous

JOHN 8:24 (NKJV) 24 Therefore I said to you that you will die in your sins; ‘for if you do not

believe that I am He, you will die in your sins.’

Next, we look at the persona of the Holy Spirit which is vital to our understanding; as some people perceive, experience or call the Spirit an impersonal force By believing this inaccuracy, sects, such as the Jehovah's Witnesses, subtly deny the ministry of the Holy Spirit’s Person as a key part of the Triune God

Page 8: THE DIVINITY OF CHRIST AND THE HOLY SPIRIT · The fact that the Holy Spirit is a person, and not an impersonal force, is confirmed by the following : 3.1 PERSONAL SENSIBILITY Signifying

3. THE HOLY SPIRIT IS AS MUCH A PERSON FOR THE

FOLLOWING REASONS

MNEMONIC : ‘SPIRIT’

The personality of the Holy Spirit is seen in the following :

PERSONAL S ENSIBILITY PERSONAL P RONOUNS PERSONAL I DENTITY PERSONAL R OLES PERSONAL I DENTIFICATION WITH THE FATHER AND

SON PERSONAL T RAITS AMPLIFICATION

The fact that the Holy Spirit is a person, and not an impersonal force, is confirmed by the following :

3.1 PERSONAL SENSIBILITY

Signifying that the Holy Spirit has feelings or emotions : 3.1.1 HE CAN BE GRIEVED

EPHESIANS 4:30 (NKJV) 30 And do not grieve the Holy Spirit of

God, by whom you were sealed for the day of redemption

3.1.2 HE LOVES

ROMANS 15:30 (NKJV) 30 Now I beg you, brethren, through the Lord Jesus Christ's sake and through the love of the Spirit, that you strive together with me in your prayers to God for me

Page 9: THE DIVINITY OF CHRIST AND THE HOLY SPIRIT · The fact that the Holy Spirit is a person, and not an impersonal force, is confirmed by the following : 3.1 PERSONAL SENSIBILITY Signifying

TTNABS 1 : LESSON 10 - THE DIVINITY OF CHRIST AND THE HOLY SPIRIT (PAGE 9/21)

COPYRIGHT © Touch the Nations Apostolic Bible School (TTNABS)

3.1.3 HE CAN BE INSULTED

HEBREWS 10:29 (NKJV) 29 Of how much worse punishment, do you suppose, will he be thought worthy who has trampled the Son of God underfoot, counted the blood of the covenant by which he was sanctified a common thing, and insulted the Spirit of grace?

3.2 PERSONAL PRONOUNS (REFERRING TO HIS PERSON)

JOHN 16:13-14 (NKJV) 13 ‘However, when He, the Spirit of truth, has come, He will guide you into all truth; for He will not speak on His own authority, but whatever He hears, He will speak; and He will tell you things to come 14 He will glorify Me, for He will take of Mine, and declare it to you’

3.3 PERSONAL IDENTITY

Called ‘another Comforter'

JOHN 14:16 (KJV)

16 And I will pray the Father, and he shall give you another Comforter, that he may abide with you forever

The Holy Spirit is called ‘Comforter' This gives Him a personal identity DEF : ANOTHER = ALLOS (Greek)

(Phonetic : al'-los)

= Another of the same sort/kind

Insult when you want to do things your way He is the Spirit of Truth

Page 10: THE DIVINITY OF CHRIST AND THE HOLY SPIRIT · The fact that the Holy Spirit is a person, and not an impersonal force, is confirmed by the following : 3.1 PERSONAL SENSIBILITY Signifying

TTNABS 1 : LESSON 10 - THE DIVINITY OF CHRIST AND THE HOLY SPIRIT (PAGE 10/21)

COPYRIGHT © Touch the Nations Apostolic Bible School (TTNABS)

DEF : ANOTHER = HETEROS (Greek)

(Phonetic : het'-er-os)

= Another of a different sort

‘Another Comforter' correctly means another like Jesus Christ; hence, our study of this alongside the divinity of Jesus Christ Jesus is still walking the earth with us, as He did with His disciples when He was on earth, through the Holy Spirit DEF : COMFORTER = PARAKLETOS

(Phonetic : par-ak'-lay-tos) = Advocate Which is the same word used for Jesus in 1 John 2:1, and is translated as ADVOCATE The Holy Spirit is our advocate (Comforter, Helper) This task can only be fulfilled by a person

3.4 PERSONAL ROLES

These are actions that indicate that the Holy Spirit has a will [that is, the ability to make decisions]

See mnemonic ‘Spirit’, to follow later on in this lesson – which highlights the ministry of the Holy Spirit

3.5 PERSONAL IDENTIFICATION WITH THE FATHER AND SON

The Father and the Son are persons The Holy Spirit's identification with the Father and Son makes Him a person Baptism (Matthew 28:19) and benediction (2 Corinthians 13:14) are done in the Triune name

Page 11: THE DIVINITY OF CHRIST AND THE HOLY SPIRIT · The fact that the Holy Spirit is a person, and not an impersonal force, is confirmed by the following : 3.1 PERSONAL SENSIBILITY Signifying

TTNABS 1 : LESSON 10 - THE DIVINITY OF CHRIST AND THE HOLY SPIRIT (PAGE 11/21)

The Holy Spirit has to be a person to be identified together with the other persons in this action

3.6 PERSONAL TRAITS

The Holy Spirit has the following main qualities that make up His personality :

3.6.1 MIND [INTELLECT - THE ABILITY TO THINK]

ROMANS 8:27 (NKJV) 27 Now He who searches the hearts knows what the mind of the Spirit is, because He makes intercession for the saints according to the will of God.

Because He has a mind, He can be :

3.6.1.1 LIED TO

ACTS 5:3 (NKJV) 3 But Peter said, ‘Ananias, why has Satan filled your heart to lie to the Holy Spirit and keep back part of the price of the land for yourself?’

3.6.1.2 BLASPHEMED

MATTHEW 12:31-32 (NKJV) 31 ‘Therefore I say to you, every sin and blasphemy will be forgiven men, but the blasphemy against the Spirit will not be forgiven men. 32 Anyone who speaks a word against the Son of Man, it will be forgiven him; but whoever speaks against the Holy Spirit, it will not be forgiven him, either in this age or in the age to come’

3.6.1.3 RESISTED

ACTS 7:51 (NKJV) 51 ‘You stiff-necked and uncircumcised in heart and ears! You always resist the Holy Spirit; as your fathers did, so do you’

3.6.2 EMOTIONS

The ability to feel - dealt with under Personal Sensibility earlier in this lesson

3.6.3 WILL

The ability to make decisions - dealt with under Personal Roles earlier in this lesson, and expounded on further through the following

4. THE MINISTRY OF THE HOLY SPIRIT

The ministry of the Holy Spirit is reflected in the following areas :

MNEMONIC : ‘SSS-PPP-II-RRR-III-TTT’ S ELECTS S EALS

S TEERS P ROTECTS P OTENTIATES P REVAILS I NTERCEDES I NSPIRES R EGENERATES R EMINDS R EPROVES I LLUMINATES I MPARTS I NVITES T EACHES T ESTIFIES T RANSFORMS

AMPLIFICATION :

4.1 SELECTS 4.1.1 AREAS FOR MINISTRY

ACTS 16:6-7 (NKJV) 6 Now when they had gone through Phrygia and the region of Galatia, they were forbidden by the Holy Spirit to preach the word in Asia. 7 After they had come to Mysia, they tried to go into Bithynia, but the Spirit did not permit them

Jesus said in Matthew 28:19 ‘Go and teach all nations...,’ but the Holy Spirit selects the areas and timing for ministry

Although initially restricted by the Holy Spirit, Paul did go to Asia at a later date at which time he experienced great success

4.1.2 LEADERS FOR MINISTRY

ACTS 13:2 (NKJV) 2 As they ministered to the Lord and fasted, the Holy Spirit said, ‘Now separate to me Barnabas and Saul for

the work to which I have called them’

The Holy Spirit specifically separated Paul and Barnabas for this ministry As a contradictory example, and apparently not by the scriptural evidence of the leading of the Holy Spirit, Barnabas took John Mark with them and even allowed him to preach in the synagogues As John Mark was not really called into this ministry, or separated by the Holy Spirit from what we can see in Scripture, he abandoned Paul and Barnabas

Page 14: THE DIVINITY OF CHRIST AND THE HOLY SPIRIT · The fact that the Holy Spirit is a person, and not an impersonal force, is confirmed by the following : 3.1 PERSONAL SENSIBILITY Signifying

TTNABS 1 : LESSON 10 - THE DIVINITY OF CHRIST AND THE HOLY SPIRIT (PAGE 14/21)

This caused much frustration to Paul and eventually resulted in the separation of Paul and Barnabas

4.1.3 THOSE CALLED TO BE SAVED

2 THESSALONIANS 2:13 (NKJV) 13 But we are bound to give thanks to God always for you, brethren beloved by the Lord, because God from the beginning chose you for salvation through sanctification by the Spirit and belief in the truth

4.2 SEALS

EPHESIANS 1:13 (NKJV) 13 In Him you also trusted, after you heard the word of truth, the gospel of your salvation; in whom also, having believed, you were sealed with the Holy Spirit of promise

The Holy Spirit is the seal (confirmation, assurance) of our salvation The Church is the Bride and Jesus the Bridegroom

Jesus Christ purchased the Church with His blood and

sealed His affection for the Church with the eternal Holy Spirit

4.3 STEERS

JOHN 16:13a (NKJV) 13 ‘However, when He the Spirit of truth, has come, He will guide you into all truth; ...’ JOHN 17:17 (NKJV) 17 ‘Sanctify them by Your truth. Your word is truth’

The Holy Spirit guides through the truth of Scripture

4.4 PROTECTS

1 JOHN 4:4 (NKJV) 4 You are of God, little children and have overcome them, because He who is in you is greater than He who is in the world ISAIAH 59:19b (NKJV) 19 When the enemy comes in like a flood, the Spirit of the Lord will lift up a standard against him

4.5 POTENTIATES (EMPOWERS THE BELIEVER) 4.5.1 TO WITNESS

ACTS 1:8 (NKJV) 8 ‘But you shall receive power when the Holy Spirit has come upon you and you shall be witnesses to Me in Jerusalem, and in all Judea and Samaria, and to the end of the earth’

ROMANS 15:19 (NKJV) 19 in mighty signs and wonders, by the power of the Spirit of God, so that from Jerusalem and round about to Illyricum I

have fully preached the gospel of Christ 4.5.2 THE INNER MAN

EPHESIANS 3:16 (NKJV) 16 that He would grant you, according to the riches of His glory, to be strengthened with might through His Spirit in the inner man

4.6 PREVAILS

ZECHARIAH 4:6b (NKJV) 6 ‘... Not by might not by power but by My Spirit, says the Lord of hosts’

4.7 INTERCEDES

ROMANS 8:26-27 (NKJV) 26 Likewise the Spirit also helps in our weaknesses. For we do not know what we should pray for as we ought, but the Spirit Himself makes intercession for us with groanings which cannot be uttered 27 Now He who searches the hearts knows what the mind of the Spirit is, because He makes intercession for the saints according to His purpose

4.8 INSPIRES

2 PETER 1:21 (NKJV) 21 for prophecy never came by the will of man, but holy men of God spoke as they were moved by the Holy Spirit

2 TIMOTHY 3:16 (NKJV) 16 All Scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness

4.9 REGENERATES

JOHN 3:5 (NKJV) 5 Jesus answered, ‘Most assuredly, I say to you, unless one is born of water and the Spirit, he cannot enter the kingdom of God’ TITUS 3:5 (NKJV) 5 not by works of righteousness which we have done, but according to His mercy He saved us, through the washing of regeneration and renewing of the Holy Spirit

4.10 REMINDS

JOHN 14:26 (NKJV) 26 But the Helper, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in My name, He will teach you all things, and bring to your remembrance all things that I said to you

4.11 REPROVES (CORRECT)

JOHN 16:8 (NKJV) 8 And when He has come, He will convict the world of sin, and of righteousness, and of judgment:

4.12 ILLUMINATES 4.12.1 UNDERSTANDING OF THE WORD

1 CORINTHIANS 2:12 (NKJV) 12 Now we have received, not the spirit of the world, but the Spirit who is from God, that we might know the things that have been freely given to us by God

4.12.2 REVEALS THINGS TO COME

JOHN 16:13 (NKJV)

13 However, when He, the Spirit of truth, has come, He will guide you into all truth; for He will not speak on His own authority, but whatever He hears He will speak; and He will tell you things to come 1 CORINTHIANS 2:10 (NKJV) 10 But God has revealed them to us through His Spirit. Paul’s belt, bound his own hands and feet, and said, ‘Thus says the Holy Spirit, ‘So shall the Jews at Jerusalem bind the man who owns this belt, and deliver him into the hands of the Gentiles’

4.13 IMPARTS 4.13.1 GIFTS

1 CORINTHIANS 12:7, 11 (NKJV) 7 But the manifestation of the Spirit is given to each one for the profit of all: 11 But one and the same Spirit works all these things, distributing to each one individually as He wills

4.13.2 LIFE

JOHN 6:63 (NKJV) 63 It is the Spirit who gives life; the flesh profits nothing. The words that I speak to you are spirit, and they are life 1 PETER 3:18 (NKJV)

18 For Christ also suffered once for sins, the just for the unjust, that He might bring us to God, being put to death in the flesh but made alive by the Spirit

ROMANS 8:11 (NKJV) 11 But if the Spirit of Him who raised Jesus from the dead dwells in you, He who raised Christ from the dead will also give life to your mortal bodies through His Spirit who dwells in you

REVELATION 22:17 (NKJV) 17 And the Spirit and the bride say, ‘Come!’ And let him who hears say, ‘Come!’ And let him who thirsts come. Whoever desires, let him take the water of life freely

4.15 TEACHES

JOHN 14:26 (NKJV) 26 But the Helper, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in My name, He will teach you all things, and bring to your remembrance all things that I said to you

1 JOHN 2:27 (NKJV) 27 But the anointing which you have received from Him abides in you, and you do not need that anyone teach you; but as the same anointing teaches you concerning all things, and is true, and is

not a lie, and just as it has taught you, you will abide in Him
