Man sought for three armed raids

A man suspected of three armed raids in the Horsham area is being sought by police.

Detectives are linking two rob-beries at Horsham and an attempt at Warnham, and are keen to trace the man pictured on this page as their main suspect.

The robberies took place on Sep-tember 22, September 19 and on September 6, all near the same time of the afternoon.

On Tuesday of last week at 4.15pm police were called to the general stores in Elm Grove, Hor-sham where a man had come in holding a hammer and demanded money. He hit the till several times with the hammer and took money from the counter before leaving the shop and running up the alley opposite Eversfi eld Road.

At about 4.20pm on September 19, as previously reported in the Post, a man entered The Warnham Village Store in Warnham.

He brandished a knife and de-manded money from the shop as-sistant, but other staff heard the threats and came to assist. The man ran out of the shop empty handed, turning right into Church Street.

On September 6 at about 3.45pm a man came into the Caterways store on Merryfi eld Drive, Horsham and demanded cash while holding a hammer. The shop worker hand-

ed over £200 pounds and he left in the direction of Greenway.

Detective Sergeant Jon Robeson, of Sussex Police, said: "We are now linking these three robberies due to the similar actions and descrip-

tion of the suspect, the locations and the similarities in times. The man is described as wearing tights over his face on all three occasions. He is also thought to be white and in his late 20s or 30s.

"In this CCTV image, from the Elm Grove robbery, he is wearing a distinctive blue hoodie and we are keen to hear from anyone who might have seen a man acting sus-piciously in the area of the any of

these stores or if you recognise this man.

"Anyone with information is asked to contact police on [email protected] quoting Op-eration Switch."

Horsham girl publishes fi rst poetry collectionA Horsham teenager who won a national poetry contest at 15 is having her fi rst collection pub-lished.

Philippa Crundwell’s book, Sev-enty Beats, will be launched on Fri-day of next week at Waterstones bookshop, Horsham.

Philippa, 17, said: "I wrote my fi rst poem at the age of fi ve and haven’t been able to stop writing poems, short stories and plays since.I’m also an ambassa-dor for New W r i t i n g South, and one of the c r e a t o r s of the Writers’ M a n i -festo. I’m passion-ate about the impor-tance of cre-ative writing in education and believe writing is something that should be available to everyone everywhere.”

Philippa won the Ocado/Peace One Day UK-wide poetry compe-tition in 2013 at the age of only 15, with her Poem For Peace

The book has been praised by several well-known writers in-cluding the former Children’s Laureate,Michael Morpurgo who said: "There is a clarity in these po-

ems, a fresh voice, unencumbered by the baggage of age. The writer looks you in the eye and tells how it is for her. Honest writing, moving writing.”

Ali Sparkes, author of the best-selling Shapeshifter series, said:"Philippa Crundwell blends in-ner with outer landscapes, overlay-ing nature with moods - from con-

templative sorrow to blind fury - from moun-

tains to fl ocks of starlings... One

to watch..." and Peter

James, ac-c l a i m e d t h r i l l e r -w r i t e r who said: " I ’ v e been re-ally im-p r e s s e d

on my fi rst look by the

breadth of subject matter

and depth of ma-turity of Philippa’s

poems. She shows a maturing beyond her years.

Steve Rudd, of publishers The King’s England Press, said: "Our attention was drawn to Philippa’s work and I could immediately see its merit. Once in awhile, a poet comes along whose work surprises you.

"I am very proud that in our twenty-fi fth anniversary year we were able to secure the rights to publish Philippa’s work.

Sky’s the limit for these talented Collyers students

Students enjoyed a day’s training at the Sky TV studios at Isleworth in West London.

Collyer’s media and fi lm studies students were given IPads and a se-ries of business tasks to perform. In teams, they generated ideas for fu-ture Sky programmes in a range of genres and pitched those ideas back to Sky’s professional programme makers.

Subject leader for media Jonathan Nunns said: “We are massively grateful to Sky for this wonderful opportunity. The students projected themselves as ambitious, energetic, focused and creative young profes-sionals. I am thrilled that they did themselves and Collyer’s proud.”

During the presentations, the students had to set complex budg-ets, identify target markets and es-

tablish which Sky channel would be most suitable for the broadcast.

Jonathan said: “Sky’s training team were very impressed with the quality of thinking, organisation, and creativity of the Collyer’s stu-dents. In recognition of the qual-ity of work and enthusiasm shown, they even off ered the potential opportunity of a work experience placement to every student on the trip!”

Assistant principal Melanie Rus-sell said: “Judging by their perfor-mance at Sky, these students have bright futures ahead of them in the creative arts industry and we look forward to seeing what they do next. We must of course also thank Jonathan Nunns and the Media and Film Studies teachers for their con-tinuous hard work and support.”

Car sharing accelerates in popularity

Car share is catching on in the Hor-sham area.

People use the service to cut down on travelling costs and “Car Clubs” operating in Horsham and in Chich-ester have expanded this year.

“Car Clubs” allow the public to hire cars from on-street locations from as little as £4.50 an hour and 13p per mile.

The prices cover fuel costs and com-prehensive insurance, so experts say anyone who drives under 8,000 miles a year will save themselves money.

“Car Club” members consider it

practical alternative to the cost and hassle of owning a car.

Both clubs are run in partnership with community interest company Co-Wheels.

In Horsham, members can hire a Toyota Aygo in Brighton Road, a Toy-ota Yaris hybrid in North Street, near Horsham railway station and a Toyota Aygo X Play in Bishopric. Thirty-fi ve drivers have signed up to the Horsham Car Club.

Growing numbers of people are saving money on travel costs in West Sussex thanks to two County Council

The benefi ts of stretchingStretching is a natural action. Peo-ple often stretch instinctively af-ter long periods of inactivity.

The most established and obvious benefi t of stretching is to help im-prove fl exibility and range of mo-tion. As the body ages, muscles can become tighter and range of motion in the joints can be minimized. A lack of fl exibility can cause move-ment to become slower and less fl u-id, making an individual more sus-ceptible to muscle strains or other soft tissue injuries. An increase in fl exibility is accompanied by im-

proved balance and coordination. Chronically tense and tight mus-

cles can also contribute to poor posture. Stretching helps to ensure correct posture by lengthening tight muscles that pull areas of the body away from their intended position.

While it is still widely debated as to whether or not stretching can help prevent injury, it has been proven to help increase blood fl ow to the muscles. This increase in fl ow brings with it a greater nutri-ent supply to muscles, thereby re-ducing muscle soreness and help-

ing to speed recovery from muscle and joint injuries. The less sore your muscles are, the less painful it will be to work those same muscles and to exercise in general.

There are two major types of stretching – dynamic and static stretching, Dynamic stretching in-volves stretching through move-ment e.g. leg and arm swings and is a good way to arm up. Static stretching is generally used post exercise to dull down the stimula-tion of the muscle, lengthen the tissues and mobilise the joints

Knitters needed to meet deadlineDeadline day is nearing for charity knitters.

Age UK Horsham District is calling on nimble-fi ngered residents to get creative and knit little hats for Age UK and innocent’s Big Knit and help older people keep warm and well in winter.

The charity is calling on local knit-ters to get as many hats as possible to them by November 27 and needs knitters and those wanting to give it a go to help make this a reality.

For more information on The Big Knit contact Age UK Horsham District on 01403 751329/ 260560 or log onto www.ageuk.org.uk/horshamdistrict.

Knitters should send send com-pleted hats to Age UK Horsham Dis-trict at Lavinia House, Dukes Square, Horsham, RH12 1GZ.

The miniature woolly hats will adorn “innocent smoothie” bottles, which will be sold in stores nation-wide from February 2016. For each be-hatted smoothie sold, “innocent “will donate 25p to help Age UK fund national and local winter projects.

Students honour tradition Hundreds of students from Horsh-am marched through the City area in London to honour a centuries-old tradition.

More than 400 from Christ’s Hos-pital celebrated St Matthew’s Day in their distinctive Tudor uniforms. With them was the Christ’s Hospital Band of 120 instrumentalists, es-corted by the City Police.

After the Service at the Church of St Andrew, Holborn, conducted by the Bishop of Chichester, The Right Reverend Dr Martin Warner, the pu-pils had lunch in Guildhall and re-ceive Largesse, a coin fresh from the Royal Mint, which was presented by

Alderman Sir David Howard and the Lady Mayoress, Mrs Gilly Yarrow.

Christ’s Hospital was founded in 1552 by Edward VI, and was estab-lished through the generosity of the Lord Mayor of the day and City benefactors as a charitable school. It remained in the City for 350 years before moving to Horsham in 1902.

Traditionally St. Matthew’s Day was the day on which the Gover-nors of Christ’s Hospital School were elected. They would meet in the School’s Great Hall, and then walk, carrying their wands, to Christ Church, Newgate Street, for a ser-vice.

backed schemes, which include the “Car Clubs”.

The other scheme is www.westsus-sexcarshare.com , a free matching service for people who live, work and travel around the county.

It matches people who want to share car journeys and cut spending on travel, saving some car sharers as much as £900 a year.

The county council says car shar-ing cuts the stress of driving, fi nd-ing parking spaces and paying out as much for fuel. It also cuts pollution.

Members who sign up can list their regular journeys, or one-off trips, on the database.

The website then fi nds a suitable match with someone else.

About 3,850 people now use the ser-vice, with 450 new members having joined in the last year.

Members in West Sussex have shared journeys for work, univer-sity, festivals and big events, foot-ball matches shopping and visiting friends.

To join, visit www.westsussexcar-share.com

County Council cabinet member for highways and transport John O’Brien said: “Traffi c congestion is estimated to cost every business in West Sussex £29,000 a year.

“So innovative ideas such as the car share and car club schemes are some-thing we’d love to see as many people as possible take up to help our busy roads.”

Trio bound for big stageA talented trio from Horsham will entertain thousands of people in a few months.

Hannah Orman, Abigail Judd, and Lotti Wright will dance in the Hawth pantomime Jack and the Bean-stalk , which opens on December 11.

After putting all the hopefuls through their paces, 24 girls were selected to appear alongside EastEnders’ Steve McFadden, who plays Phil Mitchell, and CBeebies star Rebecca Keatley

in the pantomime.Producer Emily Wood said: “We

had an incredible turn out. We al-ways look forward to the auditions

in Crawley as the talent in this area is amaz-

ing. Everyone was at such a high stand-

ard it was hard to whittle it down to just 24 but we’ve defi nitely got the right girls. They are great dancers and they really

gave their all, which is just what

we need to make Jack and the Bean-

Dani looking forward after wilderness testNights in a Yukon wilderness are a happy memory for one student as she settles back into school routine.

Dani Heath, 16, a former pupil of Horsham’s Northolmes Primary School, was part of an 18-day ex-pedition travelling more than 400 km across the Yukon wilderness by mountain bike, canoe and on foot.

With the other cadets, Dani spent every night in a wilderness campsite, cooking food and sleeping in tents.

The youngster was one of twelve cadets from Britain who took part in the gruelling course in the remote Yukon Territory of Northern Canada. After a rigourous selection process Dani was selected out of hundreds of applicants.

Her adventure of a lifetime was followed by

impressive A* and A grades in her GCSE results on her return to the UK.

Dani joined Christ’s Hospital in Year 7 from Knotholes Primary and is now in Year 12.

During the summer Dani complet-ed an international exchange with the Royal Canadian Army, where she won the prestigious gold award for physical fi tness, and later quali-fi ed for the Yukon trip. The course included training in navigation, sur-vival, mountain biking, canoeing and emergency fi rst aid.

Dani is a boarder at Christ’s Hos-pital and receives a 90% bursary and a scholarship, achieved 8A*s and 2A grades. She said: “To return to such incredible results has really made this summer the best yet and I'm so

thankful for all the sup-port given to me in

all areas of my life at Christ’s Hospital.

“ A f t e r Christ’s Hos-

pital I'm hoping to study something

such as international re-lations, law or philosophy,

politics and economics at a top university. “Head master John Franklin said:

“Dani is a great all-round pupil, get-ting involved in many diff erent as-pects of school life.”

Worthwhile but “never again” say sore walkers

Confessed non-walker Rachel Trege-ar and her team broke through the pain barrier to raise money for or-phans and then said: “Never again.”

Rachel, nursery manager at Lit-tle Monkeys Nursery and Preschool in Horsham, beat the clock and broke through the pain barrier with her pals over 30 miles to help fund a creche for orphans in the KwaZulu Natal region of South Africa.

Their trek across the county helped take the amount of money raised by the families and friends of Little Mon-keys to £5,000.

The nursery's Facebook page re-corded every stumble, blister alert and plaster stop that was eased by words of support and donations to their cause.

Rachel said that the support they re-ceived spurred the trio on through the toughest parts of their journey.

Rachel said: "Roseanne Kelly and I cannot thank them all enough for their well wishes and your encouraging comments along with all their support on the fundraising side.

"We really felt they were all behind us and it certainly spurred us on when we felt like we couldn't continue. I can assure you though we will never be do-ing it again."

Many children born in the KwaZulu Natal region of South Africa have lost their parents to the AIDS epidemic and are being raised by elderly mem-bers of the local community or their older siblings. Working alongside the West Sussex-based charity the Co-co's Foundation, the families of Little Monkeys have contributed to a range of fundraising activities including a Xmas Jumper Day, Sponsored Walks, a curry night and the designing of spe-cial Mother's Day Hearts. Work on the crèche began in June.

Wine expert Oz Clarke praised lo-cal produce when he ran a tasting at Sussex Produce Café in Steyning.

The evening was arranged by Stey-ning Bookshop, and Oz also enter-tained with stories. Albourne, Wis-ton, Stopham, Nutbourne & Bolney.

He enthused that the wines be-ing tasted were local, made by local people and enjoyed by local people – something people should all be proud of and continue to support not just in wine, but in food and drink overall.

The evening ended with Oz signing copies of his new book , Oz Clarke’s A to Z of Wine 2015; Check www.steyn-ingdistrictfooddrinkfestival.co.uk for full details on the current Steyning & District Food and Drink Festival.

New alarm laws for landlords startResidents in privately rented ac-commodation are being urged to remind their landlords about new life saving legislation now in force.

To help, fi re authorities are off er-ing a limited number of free alarms to landlords.

From October 1, after Parliamen-tary approval, all private landlords must fi t smoke alarms on each fl oor of their rental properties and install carbon monoxide alarms in rooms containing solid fuel burners.

Any landlord who does not comply could face a £5,000 fi ne.

This will bring private rented properties into line with existing

building regulations that already require newly-built homes to have hard-wired smoke alarms installed.

To help support local landlords in meeting the new regulations West Sussex Fire Rescue Service has a limited number of free smoke detec-tors and carbon monoxide alarms to give out to relevant landlords whose properties currently do not have

Private landlords in West Sussex wishing to apply for a free detector should submit an online application or visit www.westsussex.gov.uk/fi re for more information. All applica-tions will be prioritised according to risk.

Village’s scarecrows not for the birds

For birds that like to plunder fi elds Broadbridge Heath was not the place to be.

Villagers colourfully brought to life a harvest-protection sys-tem stretching back across the world about 3,000 years in a charming festival of creativity.

Organisers were delighted with the quality and number of entries for the Scarecrow Weekend last Saturday and Sunday.

The theme of fi lms and television hits

gave people a wide range of charac-ters from family fi lms to sci-fi .

Creations were scattered across the community,

outside homes of resi-dents and also business properties.

Creations of all types and sizes were dis-played by their proud owners outside homes

and other venues in the village.

Although, as the name sug-gests, the de-

vices are often used to scare crows they have been used since ancient times to scare

all types of birds and animals.

The creations at-tracted diff erent names over thou-sands of years ac-cording to where they were sited. In Sussex they began to be called Mawk-ins, and in England generally they have been hay-men, while in Scotland Tattie Bogal was a variation among

many, including Hodmedod in Berk-shire.

Scarecrows were fi rst used about 3,000

years ago, and some of the fi rst were net-covered wooden frames that caught quail that devoured wheat fi elds by the Nile river. The captured quails were eaten.

Living scarecrows were used in medieval times in Britain when young boys threw stones or waved their arms. When the Great Plaque of the 1300s wiped out many of the young “bird scarers” landowners created scarecrows by stuffi ng sacks with straw and carving faces from turnips.

Human bird scarers worked in British fi elds until the early 1800s when children found better paid jobs.

Scarecrows have been used all over the world. Greek farmers of long ago carved wooden scarecrows to look like Priapus, the son of the god Dio-nysus and the goddess Aphrodite. The Romans copied them and dur-ing their conquests brought them to England.

The fi rst Japanese scarecrows were old rags, meat or fi sh hung from bamboo poles that were set on fi re, the smell deterring birds and ani-mals.

In Italy skulls of animals were placed on the tops of tall poles in the fi elds. German farmers made wooden witches and put them in their fi elds.

The scarecrow was made famous by the actor Jon Pertwee, who por-trayed the well-loved Worzel Gum-midge in the popular 1979-81 televi-sion series.

The District Post was out and about in the village during the weekend to capture the selection of cherished scarecrows.

The Featherstone Jazzmen played When You’re Smiling as James Bak-er from Chichester romped home in near perfect conditions in one hour eleven minutes and six seconds for a record fifth Barns Green Half Mar-athon win.

James said: “I’ve had a few injuries so it was hard work and I was a bit down on my best time. But, despite the hills this is my favourite course!” Mannings Heath’s Amy Harris was the ladies’ winner in a time of 1.22.02. Amy was especially pleased, saying: “I was hit by a car nine weeks ago when out running so I wasn’t

sure whether I’d be able to compete but I managed a personal best time.”

Runners in fancy dress included Widow Twanky, actor Richard Alan, Baron Hardup in last year’s Capitol panto and looking forward to re-turning in Beauty and the Beast this Christmas. Richard told us: “It was hot running in uniform but great fun!” Zoe Munday, running dressed as a baby crawled over the finish line before collapsing – in jest.

Most runners finished in good shape although one or two needed assistance from St John’s. But, all agreed that the atmosphere with a steel band and pop music en route and entertainment and food stalls at the start and finish was unbeatable,

as epitomised by Jason Summerfield from Billingshurst: “I ran this race 31

years ago and wanted to have another crack at it. That incentivised me, giv-

ing me something to aim at. I paced myself better this time!” John Book-er, the only person to tackle every race said: “It gets harder but my tar-get is to complete 50 races – only 17 more to go!”

This year’s nominated charity was Prostate Cancer UK – a cause close to race starter Kenney Jones’s heart following his treatment for the dis-ease. Kenney played with some icon-ic groups – including The Faces with Rod Stewart and Ronnie Wood and later as drummer with The Who. But has Kenney ever run? “Only from the police!” (the pop group, of course).

Local runners were well repre-sented among the 1100 racers, others came from far and wide, the whole of

Barns Green getting behind the event – filling goody bags, marshalling, stewarding the car parks, registering runners and in many other ways. WI ladies arrived at 7.30am with break-fasts for the helpers.

Race Director Vernon Jennings said: “I’m really proud of what we’re achieving and can’t emphasise enough how the whole village supports it and it’s great that we can help by giving donations to the local organisations helping us.” Vernon and his family certainly lead by example, his wife Ann edits the excellent programme while two sons are involved in various ca-pacities. Vernon added: “We’ll soon be planning the next race: October 2 2016, in aid of breast cancer.”

All agreed that that the atmosphere with a steel band and pop music en route and entertainment and food stalls at the start and finish was unbeatable

Youngsters pay tribute

Youngsters paid their own tribute to those who fl ew to save Britain from invasion.

Cadets and Staff from Horsham Air Cadets paraded at the War Memorial in the Carfax for the Battle of Britain annual Service of Remembrance.

After setting off from the Ca-det Center in Duke’s Square the 50-strong Squadron marched through East Street to the memorial, where they laid a wreath as a mark of respect. They then marched to St Mary’s Church for a short church ser-vice before marching back to the ca-det centre.

The local branch of the Royal Air Force Association arranged the ser-vice. The vice chairman of Horsham District Council Cllr Christian Mitch-ell attended accompanied by the council chairman’s cadet Flight Ser-geant Andrew Stuckey, as well mem-

bers of RAFA who were all present in the Carfax and at the short church service.

Flight Lieutenant Richard Foster, Offi cer Commanding of 1015 (Hor-sham) Air Cadets, said: “These events serve to remind our communities that the younger generation, especially the Air Training Corps, are proud to represent the Royal Air Force in re-membering the sacrifi ces others have made and continue to make to keep our Country safe. The Battle of Brit-ain was a turning point in the Second World War and we will remember them.’’

Horsham Air Cadets is recruiting, if you are interested in joining and are aged 12-17, you can contact us on [email protected] for details of our next open evening. We also welcome applications for adult volunteers, who can contact us on the same address.

Farlington school scores national successSmall seems beautiful when it comes to class sizes, a school has shown.

Farlington School has come third in The Telegraph’s latest Independent Smaller Schools A Level Results Table, making it the top performing smaller independent school in the South East of England.

In a statement on its success the school says “class sizes are kept small, enabling every student to participate actively, and Farlington’s outstanding teachers ensure students attain their true potential with impressive ‘value added’ scores.”

Students at Farlington Sixth Form, just outside Horsham, have attained excellent results this year: 80.6% of girls received grades A*-B.

The table ranks schools by the per-centage of subject entries graded A*/A. To qualify to be a small school, there must be 24 candidates or fewer entered for A level. The data is supplied by the Independent Schools Council.

Louise Higson, Farlington’s head-

mistress, said: “I am delighted that our A Level results have featured so well in The Telegraph’s league table. Exami-nation results are important, but we also off er outstanding pastoral care and preparation for the future. Op-

portunities to participate in the Young Enterprise Scheme, the Duke of Edin-burgh’s Award and voluntary service placements are important extra-cur-ricular initiatives which help prepare students for life beyond school.”

Dog walkers charity stroll on SundayCalling all dog lovers for charity walk

Dog lovers are gathering on Sunday in the fi rst Big Walkies fund raiser of the RSPCA in Horsham. They will take a stroll in Southwater Country Park at 10am, choosing a 3k or 5k walk.

Dogs of all shapes and sizes are wel-come and they will be given their own bandana to wear on the day.

Online registrations are closed but people can register on the day.

Some of the RSPCA’s star rescue dogs are taking part in Big Walkies.

One of the dogs taking part in Hor-sham will be Tim.

He was found neglected but was re-habilitated by the RSPCA and now has new owners who will be joining the pack at Southwater.

Joining Tim will be Dolly, who is currently being cared for by RSPCA Sussex North branch. Dolly is hoping

to raise the £500 that it cost the RSP-CA for her life-saving operation.

The RSPCA held its fl agship Big Walkies event at Alexandra Palace in London in May and a second event in Cannon Hill Park in Birmingham in June. Almost 1,000 dogs took part over the two events.

Throughout September and October there are 21 local Big Walkies events all over the country for people to take part in.

Michael’s book sheds light on village historyThe days of forbidding wilderness, rutted tracks and paraffi n street lights are brought to life in a new book on the history of Cowfold.

Author Michael Burt traces the de-velopment of the community from dense woodland of Saxon rule to the busy modern times in “Cowfold, The History of a Sussex Village “, which was launched at the village hall.

Mr Burt illustrates the chang-ing face of Cowfold with some fas-cinating images and reports how a population of about 200 in 1603 had swelled to more than 2,000 by 2011.

Until the Normans came the area was so thick with woodland that only a few people lived in scattered clear-ings . He remarks of the Domes-day Book times of the 11th century: “Travelling through this area might have felt like a voyage into the un-known”. Superstition kept many people out of the woods, which for centuries were visited only by semi-nomadic hunters.

Days of dawn to dusk toil as farm-ing developed are recalled and the

times when women brewed beer be-cause the water was not fi t to drink. Even by the 1800s conditions were primitive, with cesspits providing sanitary arrangements, and in 1900 paraffi n kept the street lighting burning.

By then the village had become self-suffi cient for most basic eve-ryday needs, a far cry from today’s society, and from the 1900s it would undergo rapid change as transport and technology moved at a pace never seen before.

Mr Burt, from Shermanbury, sums up by saying: “Cowfold is a modern village, but its historical, social and educational backbone endures”. And he adds: “There is therefore every expectation that Cowfold will continue to provide the village en-vironment and social and other out-lets that have made it an attractive place to live over the length of its history.”

In his acknowledgements Mr Burt says: “ Much of this history could have been compiled without the ex-tensive and meticulous research un-dertaken by David Pavitt, who died in May 2011, and an enormous debt is owed to him.”

The book is available at local out-lets priced at £9.99.

Pictured are the book cover show-ing Cowfold in the 19th century, the paraffi n street lamps, the village in 1914 and a venture coach on the primitive roads.

Mr Burt illustrates the changing face of Cowfold with some facinating images and reports

Last week I found myself in hospital with a virus on the brain.

Being a virus, the doctors aren't re-ally sure what it was or where it came from, merely that it was there and causing me distress. A virus cannot be treated with medicine, but complica-tions meant I was required to stay in for observation.

What really struck me -aside from the medical brilliance we have in the NHS - was the fact we UK gardeners are very lucky indeed. Sure, we don't have deadly spiders, toxic snakes or painfully aggressive ants to deal with, but if you think of all the microbes in the soil that we come into contact with on a daily basis, it is a wonder we live at all.

I am a great believer in 'a peck of dirt', but one cannot be immune to everything. Add to this the truly nas-ty infections like Toxoplasma gondii that is spread by cat faeces, or the Toxocara canis worm in dog poo that can lead to blindness; to have such a wondrous organisation that is free at the point of service on my doorstep is truly remarkable. Long may it remain so.

My awe aside, the amount of acci-dents the expert doctors and nurses patch up all summer without a com-plaint, despite occasional abuse, re-

Gardening and the NHS

guy deakinsGardening

Gardening and the NHSally does make me glad to be living in Britain and not somewhere that relies on you having the right insurance. One nurse told me, she can always tell when grass cutting season has arrived by the increased number of fi nger tips and toes that get accidentally removed by the blades of mowers. The same goes for barbeque weather and third degree burns. Easter is also tradition-ally the season of blood-letting, the increased traffi c to DIY superstores invariably leads to increased traffi c at A&E.

On a serious note though, seeing the number of seriously ill people on the emergency ward last week, made me rather abashed. Those poor NHS staff are drastically understaff ed and low in morale, yet they turn up every day with a smile to tend the sick and dying only for us to add to the burden with some easily avoided DIY accident.

A simple lazy mistake adds more pressure to the overworked and costs a vital system thousands of pounds it cannot aff ord. Perhaps you be-lieve that your taxes paid for the treatment? If you were given a bill of costs for each visit, you may well change your mind. It is well and good for some idiot politician (with a good private health policy) to say that the NHS should be 24/7, from what I saw it already is and I'd like to thank all the staff on the Worthing Hospital Emer-gency Floor, from the senior consult-ants to the equally important house-keeping staff who facilitated my stay. I am honoured to have been under your care.

Millais School are delighted to an-nounce that they have been awarded the Secondary Geography Quality Mark by the Geographical Association.

The SGQM award process encour-ages and supports schools to refl ect on their work and strive for the highest quality in their teaching. All the award winners undergo a rigorous modera-tion process, and the team of assessors were hugely impressed by the manner in which Millais are continuing to em-brace new and innovative approaches to teaching geography.

The SGQM, now into its 9th year, recognises student attainment, pro-gress and achievement in areas such as geographical knowledge, understand-ing, values, skills and concepts, and

sets expectations about the quality of teaching in geography. It aims to pro-mote eff ective subject leadership and management, helping subject leaders raise the standards of geography in their schools.

The Geographical Association stated that: “We were very impressed and enjoyed reading about geography at Millais School. You are clearly a well organised and hard-working geogra-phy department with a clear vision. Your students receive an excellent ex-perience of geography throughout the school and we are delighted to award you the SGQM. We are glad that you have found the process benefi cial to your department which must have been in a challenging situation after

losing so much in the fi re”.The Geography department have

recently introduced a new coastal fi eld trip, and held a number of enrichment activities last year, including a ‘Geog-raphy Bake-off ’ and ‘Mock sweatshop’ that was visited by Jeremy Quinn MP.

Millais hold the award until 2018.Headteacher, Dr Alison Lodwick said

“We are very proud that the excellent teaching and learning in Geography has gained national recognition, by the award of the prestigious SGQM. It is testimony to the dedication of the leadership and teachers in the depart-ment, who search out new and exciting ways to engage the students, and to our students who have a positive attitude to their learning”

We have been using the Resident and subsequently, The District Post for advertising since the launch of the paper.Whilst it is difficult to quantify results, I would say that as a free paper, delivered around the whole Horsham District and picked up from selected places in the area, they are friendly to deal with, professional, very helpful with design and swift to print. Deadline is Wednesday for a Friday print and they have NEVER let us down! We use this paper exclusively. Because it is a free paper and the best known for that around the area, the circulation is getting bigger by the week/month and therefore I would recommend highly as THE advertising vehicle to use.

The best things come in threes

Three linked offi ce suites with ample onsite parking have be-come available in the rural setting of Crays Court, Goose Green, less than 3 miles from the A24 at Ash-ington.

In total, the single storey building which houses the triple offi ce suite extends to just over 2,500 sq ft with the smallest unit being 557 sq ft and the largest providing 1,142 sq ft. The units may be taken individually or together, in any combination, with details of the corresponding rents available through sole letting agents, Henry Adams Commercial

in Horsham.Andrew Algar, Head of Commer-

cial Agency, said: “The offi ces are well presented and form part of an offi ce courtyard development in this attractive rural setting. The wood clad building fi ts in nicely with the surroundings but equally it’s not far from the A24 which in turn links to the A27 and A272 or just down the road are the villages of Storrington and of course Ash-ington. A good location with easy parking and a choice of unit sizes makes this a realistic option for many diff erent company uses.”

Specifi cation of each unit in-cludes fi bre optic wiring, fl oor and perimeter trunking, Cat II lighting, double glazing, toilet facilities and a kitchenette. The units are from £8,500 per annum on a full repair-ing and insuring lease with an ad-ditional service charge covering a wide range of management issues including buildings insurance and security maintenance.

For further details or to view the three linked offi ce suites at Crays Court, contact Andrew Algar on 01403 282519 or email [email protected].

Sussex printers launch new apprenticeshipSussex based print, marketing and design specialists, Evonprint, are delighted to announce they have off ered local teen, Sam Smith, the fi rst place on their new apprentice-ship programme

Sam impressed after com-pleting work experience within the family run company. This ini-tiative has been set up to provide workplace op-portunities for local young-sters.

Situated in the charming village of Small Dole, the thriving business is keen for those in the local area to receive valuable experience either through its work experience or new ap-prenticeship programmes. As an alternative to traditional higher education, Evonprint is dedicated to off ering their young employees hands on experience with the op-portunity to pursue a rewarding ca-reer once the training is complete

On accepting his place on the scheme Sam, aged 16, will also at-tend a local college to support his print apprenticeship. In keeping with the family feel of the business Sam’s mother has also worked at

Evonprint for over four years years and encouraged him to apply for the scheme as she knows fi rst-hand how enjoyable and rewarding a ca-reer with the company is.

Commenting on his experience so far at Evonprint, Sam said:

“I always knew about Evonprint as my mum

has worked there for many years, but

it was only after completing work experience at the company that I considered it as a potential career. I had fantastic

experience where I got to learn about

all the diff erent as-pects of the business,

and I feel that, through the apprenticeship pro-

gramme, I will be able to continue to learn and improve my skills while earning a wage. It could be a great opportunity to start building my ca-reer, especially in such a friendly and local company.”

Steve Rowlands, Managing Direc-tor of Evonprint, commented:

“Apprenticeship programmes can be extremely worthwhile as they allow those who don’t necessarily want to go to college full time the chance to earn a good wage while learning a trade.”

STEAMER TRADING

The illustrious history of our Horsham store dates back to 1925, when Messrs. Scott & Sargeant opened their premises at 26 East Street. The business ourished and grew and allowed the shop to take over the adjoining property. In 2004, nearly 80 years later, Scott & Sargeant became a Steamer Trading shop when the owners

decided to retire. When we had nished the shop had grown into no.28, next door, and acquired wonderful new spaces for displaying fabulous kitchenware – and even a café. Today, our Horsham store is a real emporium, with a fantastic selection of everything for the kitchen and table spread out over 7,000 sq.ft.

Oz Clarke wows Steyning during visitA Tuesday night in Steyning will never be quite the same, after the night Oz Clarke came to town. The evening was arranged by Steyning Bookshop, staged at the Sussex Produce Café, and was jam packed with wine enthusiasts, who were not disappointed.

Oz began the evening with some glorious stories from his past, keeping everyone in stiches. He then moved on to the main purpose of the evening – tasting 6 wines from local vineyards, including Albourne, Wiston, Stopham, Nut-bourne & Bolney. Along with his comments on the wines, he amazed the vast audience with his tremen-dous depth of knowledge, regard-ing the soil in which it was grown, the temperature that was needed to “ripen” each variety of grape, the way it was produced and bottled - the information just flowed and flowed, keeping everyone on the edge of their seat, waiting to learn more.

With amazing tales about climate change, Oz explained how it is ef-fecting the wine industry, with some areas – like England – becoming more and more able to produce top class wines and other, more famil-iar and established wine producing areas, facing weather challenges. He also enthused on the fact that the wines being tasted were local, made by local people and enjoyed by local people – something we should

all be proud of and continue to sup-port, not just in wine, but in food & drink overall.

The evening ended with Oz sign-ing copies of his new book , Oz Clarke’s AZ of Wine 2015; he took so much time and obvious pleasure chatting with each person and then personalising a message before signing.

After the end of the evening, along with organisers of the event, he crossed the High Street to visit

The Chequer Inn, where he enjoyed local ale before, at last, heading for Springwells Hotel, for some well earned rest. It was a truly magnifi-cent evening.

Steyning & District’s Food & Drink Festival still has a few headliners in store, before it draws to an end on October 6: The Farmers Market & Annual Pumpkin Weigh; Judg-ing of the Best Food Theme Shop Window Competition; the South Downs National Park Walk; Steyn-

ing Community Orchard Apple Day; Afternoon Tea at the Old Tollgate - all set for October 3. Breakfast for Age UK Horsham District at Baloo’s and Pick It Cook It Crab Apple Day at Daylands Farm, take place on Oc-tober 4. The final event, on October 6, is the Safar Supper in aid of the Chestnut Tree Hospice.

Check www.steyningdistrict-fooddrinkfestival.co.uk for full de-tails of how you can support any or all of these events.

Student receives sponsorship for fi lm

Josiah HollowayEntertainment Writer

Horsham fi lmmaker and 19-year old university student, David Witchell, has been given sponsor-ship to help complete his short fi lm.

The fast paced comedy entitled ‘Mr Ludifi co’ is being targeted to-wards multiple fi lm festivals across the UK.

David said: “ I became interested in fi lm a few years back after I start-ed playing around with a camera and realised this was something I really loved.

“There are plans to take ‘Mr Ludi-

fi co’ to fi lm festivals up and down the country, if it gets shortlisted or screened I could get the support I need to make future fi lms and kick start my career.”

Fact Not Fiction Films agreed to sponsor the fi lm about Nathan, a young man fresh out of university, who meets a man in a cafe for an in-terview for a fi nancial fi rm.

However things quickly change and the interview takes a strange twist following some odd questions from the interviewer, Mr Ludifi co.

Tristan Loraine, Fact Not Fiction Films Director, said: “ We are de-lighted to help such a talented local fi lmmaker. David has a very promis-

ing career ahead of him.” The sponsorship will help support

‘Mr Ludifi co’ fi nancially and ensure that the project is produced to the highest possible standard.

David added: “The help from Fact Not Fiction Films is incredible, I can now focus on getting the fi lm com-pleted instead of scratching around for pennies.”

‘Mr Ludifi co’ is currently in pre-production and shooting is set for November this year. For more infor-mation, or if you would like to help support the fi lm, visit the Facebook page - facebook.com/MrLudifi co or contact David on his email – [email protected]

ACTORS: this year’s panto has larger parts for experienced actors but also some much smaller parts, only on stage for a couple of pages, ideal for those looking just to gently ‘test the water’

CREW: lots of roles here: from managing the stage on the night, through to wielding a paintbrush,

sourcing props, making costumes, dressers, stewards and bar staff just for the productions: jobs for almost everyone

To fi nd out more, please come along to Capel Village memorial Hall on Sunday 11th October, 2pm for Dancers and all non-acting roles, 3pm for a script read through, for potential actors.

If you cannot make Sunday but want to register your interest, please call Martin on 01306 628155

Landskroner – A star in the makingMartin ReadNews Reporter

Busy 16 year old local boy Natha-nael Landskroner is causing quite a stir in the world of entertain-ment as an all-round entertainer and, especially, as a highly tal-ented singer.

Currently appearing on the X Factor, previously a TeenStar fi -nalist and in The One, West Side Story with the National Youth Mu-sic Theatre (NYMT) at Manchester, and roles in Grease - and both Cats and Les Miserables locally. Natha-nael has been in panto, too and has released his debut single “Brak-ing in the Fast Lane”, available on iTunes, Spotify and via Google.

He was also in the world premier of Brass, again with NYMT, ad-judged the best Musical Production of 2014 at the UK Theatre Awards and recorded a CD with the origi-nal cast. Performing as pre show support on the Forum Stage at the LG Arena in Birmingham for both Robbie Williams and Michael Bu-ble is also on singer songwriter Nathanael’s burgeoning CV.

Nathanael clearly thrives on his exhausting schedule, fi tting it in with college at Haywards Heath and telling the District Post: “Be-ing on TV shows is a good way of getting myself out there. I’ve en-joyed acting and dancing but sing-ing is my favourite form of per-forming – I just love it and I’m

very keen to add to my experience because I always want to be bet-ter. I’ve had great support from my family and my new manager, Adam, too.”

Nathanael tailor-makes his per-formances according to his diff er-ent audiences, saying: “I’ve got some exciting gigs coming up in Brighton and elsewhere and will be enjoying singing soul in the style of Stevie Wonder and rock like Bon Jovi.” Nathanael’s ambition is to have his own show at Wembley and it would be a brave person to bet against that!

Details of Nathanael Landsk-roner’s appearances can be found on twitter @Natinfi num and Face-book www.com/nathanaelsaul

Rugby club off ers free beer to Aussies ahead of World Cup clashHorsham Rugby Club is making a unique off er of a free beer to Aus-tralians in the town, ahead of the big Rugby World Cup showdown this Saturday.

The club is showing a replay of the 2003 World Cup Final – when England beat Australia on their own soil – as a prelude to the cru-cial match on Saturday night. A free pint of Fosters will be off ered to any Aussie fan who comes to the club to watch it.

Commercial Manager, Richard Ordidge, said: “The wallabies are always diffi cult to beat, but we’ve done it before and replaying the World Cup fi nal win is a great mo-tivator for our supporters.

“The Aussies will be up for this too and they’re very welcome to join us for the big match. And as a show of goodwill, there’s a free beer for any Aussie who turns up to watch the 2003 Final replay- when England beat Australia in their own country to lift the World Cup.”

The 2003 Final will be shown as part of the build up to the England v Australia group game, which Eng-land must win to stay in the compe-tition. Horsham Rugby Club is also laying on live music, an Aussie BBQ, competitions and family fun, ahead of the critical game.

And the club is hoping that the World Cup will encourage more players – including any resident Aussies - back into the game too.

Horsham is one of only 50 na-tionwide clubs, chosen by the Rug-by Football Union (RFU), to host the Return to Rugby initiative during the Rugby World Cup. It is headed by World Cup winner, Lewis Moody.

The club launched its campaign with a rugby fun day on September

26 and the events on Saturday off er another opportunity for new play-ers to come to the club and join in with the fun.

The club is aiming to recruit over 50 new members by November, as its contribution towards the RFU target of getting 5,000 players back into the game. Horsham rugby club has a women’s team, Touch Rugby team and junior teams, as well as the senior teams, to encourage as many as possible to get involved.

Barry Wright, Club Captain for Horsham Rugby Club said: “We are proud that Horsham has been se-lected as one of only 50 clubs na-tionwide to host the Return to Rug-by campaign and will be running events throughout the Rugby World Cup to encourage players to take up the game.

“If you’ve played before and have been inspired by the World Cup to get your boots back on, we’d love to see you. We have great events throughout the World Cup and even have free beer vouchers for new members joining us!”

WE KNOW WHAT’SON YOUR MIND.

You’ve had a great tenant who has paid consistently every month and returns the property to you in better condition than when you let it out, but then your managing agent fails to re-let your investment. Champion Will Palmer finishes in styleMotor SportDave Smith – Sports Editor

Having already secured the 2015 Duo BRDC Formula 4 Champion-ship title Will Palmer brought the season to an end with another classy performance at Brands Hatch last weekend, claiming his 11th and 12th wins of the season.

Will has won half the races he has

contested this season and the final Championship standings sees him on a massive 592 points, 137 ahead of his nearest rival Harri Newey.

By winning the 2015 Duo BRDC Formula 4 title Will has secured the championship prize package of £35,000 cash, a GP3 test drive with ART Grand Prix and a special Pirelli award of €50,000 if he graduates to the GP3 Series.

Will said: “It is amazing. To win half of the races this year is some-thing I couldn’t have possibly dreamt of at the beginning of the year. I'm delighted that we have been able to be so successful this year so I have to say a big thank you to the team for that, because to-gether over the last four years we've worked so well together and come a long way."

Depleted Horsham battle through

Saturday September 26 – South Clubs’ Women’s Hockey League Division 1Horsham 2 - 1 Tulse Hill & Dul-wich Horsham pulled off a gritty win despite being without three ex-perienced players – captain Gill Adams (awaiting an MRI scan to determine the extent of her knee injury), Emma Whipps and Lauren Keefe.

And, it was Horsham who opened the scoring after six minutes when Tiff Male found the net to fi nish off a strong attack. A close call against the Horsham goal followed amid some excellent home build ups, and then a Horsham short corner was parried away. Tulse Hill responded with a series of staunchly defend-ed forays until they fi nally broke through to equalise. Horsham im-mediately attacked but the half time whistle denied them further opportunity with the teams break-ing at one apiece.

Storming out on the restart Hor-sham immediately went ahead again courtesy of a Steph Dent goal. But revitalised Tulse Hill pressed remorselessly, earning eight short corners in a quarter of an hour but Horsham’s defence held fi rm with

Three girls from Horsham Hawks Basketball Club represented South East England at the National U15 Basketball Finals in Sheffi eld last weekend.

Millie Lea-Clayton, Ellie Hutch-inson and India Belfi eld competed in the two day tournament which featured teams from ten regions throughout England. Following four months of trials the girls made the fi nal squad of 12 which included fi ve players from the U15 England Devel-opment Squad.

On day one the South East be-gan the tournament in style with an emphatic 42 – 6 opening victory over the North East. In the second game despite sustaining a narrow lead throughout the majority of the game the South West came from behind in the dying minutes of the contest to score the last 8 points and spoil the South East Region’s perfect start. The next match pitched the South East against this year’s even-tual tournament winners, a big and technically sound Yorkshire side. Both teams matched each other in front of a packed arena with the South East holding their nerve to se-cure a hard fought three point win by 34-31.

The win set up a four way tie for fi rst place in the group and a must win game against the North West to progress to the semi-fi nal. The South East batted hard in their fi -

England ladies stoolball returns to HorshamStoolball Martin Read – Sports Reporter

The England Ladies’ stoolball team returned to Horsham Cricket Club last Sunday for the fourth running of their annual tournament after holding a training camp at the same venue on the previous weekend.

This year it was the turn of the England Ladies against the P r e s i d e n t ’ s XI in two top matches, one featuring the over 50s.

All of the ladies selected were nominated by their respective leagues through-out Sussex, Surrey, Hampshire and Kent and included Lucy Order (Fordcome & Kent) with a seasonal highest score of 186 not out and Rebecca Steptowe – the England Ladies’ captain – (Bid-borough & Kent) with 2034 runs this year.

The large crowd basked in glori-ous sunshine, enjoying the barbecue, raffl e and special sale of stoolball equipment, clothing and DVDs.

Horsham based John Price, who with his wife Kay has done so much

to promote the game told the District Post: “This is the culmination of an-other busy season, including schools championships. We’re blessed with superb weather and it is wonderful to see so many people here. Stoolball is great for all ages and men can enjoy

it in mixed teams, too. It has been a very enjoya-

Sam Osborne fi ghts on at Donington

Motor CyclingDave Smith – Sports Editor

It proved a challenging meeting for motorcycle racer Sam Osborne at Donington Park last weekend as he battled for trophies in the pe-nultimate round of the Thunder-

sport GB championship. Though he didn’t make the po-

dium this time, he put in strong performances across the four-race weekend despite being hampered by tyre issues.

Struggling with major problems with grip due to running on scrubs

– cheaper, part-used tyres dis-carded by previous riders after one or two races – Sam qualifi ed 9th in a fi eld of 45 riders in the Pre-Na-tional Sport 600 class. He came in 7th in race 1, then in race 2 crashed after clipping a kerb. In race 3, with changes to the set-up of the Suzuki GSX-R 600 that he’s riding this year for MSG Racing, Sam came 5th in race 3 and 6th in race 4.

Sam, 23, from Billingshurst, says: “It was a consistent weekend but I would've liked to get on the podium. I’m really struggling with funds and need to be running on new tyres, not scrubs. It was very frustrating; I couldn't get the power down. With new tyres the grip means you can give it everything you’ve got, which would get me the two seconds’ lap time there was between me and the race leader.”

At £400-£500 a set for new tyres, Sam’s seeking sponsorship for the fi nal round at Cadwell Park in Oc-tober.

Green & Whites off the mark with fi rst league win

Slow start proves to be costly for PulboroughSaturday September 26 – London 3 South East Old Dunstonians 26 – 14 Pulborough

RugbyDave Smith – Sports Editor

Pulborough travelled up to Becken-ham to face a strong and large Old Dunstonians side and got off to an awful start.

In a very poor opening 20 minutes from Pulborough Dunstonians scored 19 points without reply leaving the visitors with an uphill task that they were unable to turn around.

Some replacements were able to be made halfway through the fi rst half as, due to work commit-ments, the late arriving players were brought into the fray. No inroads were made however in reducing the defi cit and the home side went in at the break with their 19-0 advantage intact.

The second half saw a much live-lier Pulborough side that quickly got into the opposition, being rewarded

by an early try. Keith Chenoweth, who was making his debut, evaded several tackles to go in under the posts for a well taken try that was converted by Frazer Oliphant-Hope for 19 - 7

Very soon it was 19 – 14 when Fraz-er Oliphant-Hope put a cross fi eld kick into open space behind the back line that Brad Game ran in to put Pul-borough well back in contention.

With time running out Pulborough went looking for the win but were caught out when after a mistake in the scrum the home centre went over under the posts to secure his side the 26 – 14 bonus point victory.

Pulborough face newly promoted Cranbrook at home tomorrow (Sat-urday Oct 3) when they will be look-ing to get back on track with a win.

Pulborough Team: Blunden, Gus Oliphant-Hope, Allingham, Nichol-ls, Bullock, Hartley, Chenoweth, Hodgkinson, Scrase, Hoey, Game, Burfi end, Steere, Scrase, Lee. Subs: Frazer Oliphant-Hope, Denman, Curtis.

Saturday September 26 – London 2 South EastHorsham 29 – 13 Old Colfeians

RugbyRichard Ordidge – Horsham RUFC

It has been over twenty years since Horsham have been as high as Old Colfeians in the league pyramid and this was an important test for the Green and Whites against a side that have fi nished mid table for the last few seasons.

Horsham coach Nick Stocker said: “It was vital to get a win under our belts otherwise it would have started to aff ect our confi dence. Old Col-feians are a good, experienced mid table side so a positive result was crucial to show that we belong in this league. Our scrum and line-out did not function as well as in recent times against a lumpy pack. Al-though we have made a lot of chang-es we were below par and there is defi nitely room for improvement. After last week’s thumping we have worked hard on our defensive pat-terns, we tackled better and looked a lot more organised. We looked a lot more threatening running in four tries and they only scored their fi rst try because we took risks running the ball out of defence.”

The match started with Old Col-feians in the ascendancy. Horsham were absorbing a lot of pressure and when they forced a penalty the kick at goal was missed.

When Old Colfeians did fi nally break the Green and White defen-sive line Will Bell was on hand to force a knock on in the tackle. Old Colfeians took the lead with a pen-alty when Horsham were caught

off side in midfi eld then on 18 min-utes Horsham hit back after a fi ne strike move. Johnny Ordidge made a break and ran hard, offl oaded in the tackle to Tom Johnson who attacked the space and found Andy Gray who crossed the line under the posts. On 24 minutes good set up play and rewind resulted in a try for Jordan Smith running a good line off Liam Brady. There was then the opportu-nity to extend the lead on the stroke of half time but the penalty attempt was missed and Horsham went into the break 14-3 up.

At the start of the second half Old Colfeians full back Ed Livett made a superb break to carve open the Hor-sham defence but then his long pass to his left winger was not held. Min-utes later Livett broke through again and executed a perfectly weighted grubber kick however Jerry Downey read the situation and covered across to fall on the ball and clear the danger.

The third quarter of the game was characterised by errors. Horsham brought on their replacements and a yellow card was awarded to each team for cumulative off ences. The scoreboard was not troubled un-til Johnson’s penalty attempt went over off the inside of the post after 68 minutes and then on 72 minutes Johnson made a fi ne break, bounced off an attempted tackle, powered on again and then passed to winger Dan Crook who crossed in the corner to take a seemingly unassailable 22-3 lead.

Horsham were then guilty of over adventure when trying to run the ball out of defence, dropping the ball in midfi eld and Old Colfeians were clinical to capitalise on the mistake

to score. Horsham attacked again in search of the fourth try bonus point and when awarded a penalty a good attacking position was created as they kicked for the corner, but when the ball was spun wide a lack of pre-cision passing saw the ball spilled and the opportunity go to waste.

Old Colfeians bounced back to score a try of their own, which if converted would have secured a los-ing bonus point, but then in the fi -nal minute in one last desperate at-tack James Whiting crashed through several tackles in the outside centre channel and stretch for the line to score under the posts amidst much celebration from the home support-ers.

Stocker added: “Jordan Smith is my man of the match. He hit his rucks and tackles, tidied up well in the line out and ran a good line to score his try. Both our young props, Kyle Fairs and Liam Brady played well, Ryan Grover showed grunt on his return, Tom Johnson put in a good performance and Will Bell was his usual reliable self. It was a good win to put under our belts but there is much to improve.”

Horsham next face old rivals Dartfordians tomorrow (Saturday October 3). Both sides know each other well, with Dartfordians hav-ing won three out of the last four league encounters in London 3 South East, before they were both promoted together at the end of last season.

Horsham Team: Bell; Crook, Ordidge, Tom Johnson, Downey (James Whiting 63); James Johnson, Mills; Brady, Fisher, Fairs (Barber 55); Jonny Whiting (Price 55), Grov-er; Smith, Thompson, Gray.

James and Amy claim Barnes Green victories

Athletics Dave Smith – Sports Editor

Race favourite James Baker of Chichester Runners & Athletics Club won the Men’s Barnes Green Half Marathon for a record fi fth time in a time of 1:11:06 last Sun-day.

Mannings Heath’s Amy Harris of Horsham Amphibians Club won the Women’s race in a personal best time of 1:22:02.

Both winners achieved success at the race despite having recent in-jury setbacks.

James said: “I’ve had a few inju-ries so it was hard work and I was a bit down on my best time. But, de-spite the hills this is my favourite course”.

Amy was hit by a car nine weeks ago and said “I wasn’t sure whether I’d be able to compete but I man-aged a personal best time.”

The race was held on behalf of this year’s charity, Prostate Cancer UK, and was started by The Faces and Who drummer Kenney Jones who has undergone treatment for the disease.

Hornets hit double fi gures against hapless St Francis

Saturday September 26 - SCFL Premier DivisionSt Francis Rangers 0 – 11 Horsham

FootballDave Smith – Sports Editor

As predicted last week, after they hit seven past Wick & Barnham, Horsham reached double fi gures in this away league fi xture against hapless St Francis Rangers.

The opposition are no strangers to leaking goals as this was their third double fi gure walloping of the sea-son. This now leaves the Haywards Heath based side with goal statistics of 55 against and 1 scored in their eight matches. However despite the opposition the ball still has to be put in the net and Di Paola’s Hornets did that with ruthless effi ciency in a to-tally one sided and dominant display.

About the only surprise from the match, especially given the eventual goal tally, was that it took Horsham 19 minutes to score. Those 19 min-utes did contain numerous chances and eff orts on goal and the one way traffi c saw home ‘keeper Mark Ol-droyd’s goal under constant bom-bardment.

The breakthrough was made from a scruff y goal converted with a low defl ected shot from Ryan Storrie af-ter Scott Murfi n’s mishit eff ort was poorly cleared by the lightweight home defence. With the fi rst goal on the score sheet the fl oodgates were fi nally opened and it took only a further minute for Horsham to double the lead. The referee spotted a needless handball in the area and Joe Shelley made no mistake from the spot.

The home keeper Oldroyd pulled off a couple of good saves to prevent a third but should have been given

no chance by Murfi n who was pre-sented with an open goal a few yards out. Somehow the out of form Hor-sham striker managed to clear the bar when scoring would have been far easier.

It was three soon after. Pamment put the ball into the box - Murfi n again made a mess of it - but this time Dodd was on hand to poke the ball into the net.

Just three minutes later it was 4-0 when Pamment pulled the ball back to Darren Boswell whose cross come shot looped over everyone and into the net allowing the Hornets to take their 4 goal advantage into the break

With seven goals to come in the second half Horsham came out of the blocks quickly, taking only two minutes of the re-start to add to the score when Dodd chipped the stranded Oldroyd to fi nd the net. It then took a further 18 minutes be-fore the next goal was scored, this time the lively Pamment fi nishing his own individual run with a shot under the ‘keeper.

It was then goals every few min-utes up to the fi nal whistle.

Dodd completed his hat-trick with a header; substitute Samir Hadi hit number eight; Dodd grabbed his fourth of the afternoon glancing in a header from Pamment free kick and even the misfi ring Murfi n got in on the act by making it ten from close range. 2 minutes later and 2 minutes before the fi nal whistle Hadi scored his second and his teams eleventh to complete the thrashing of the home side.

Horsham Team: Williams, Dun-can, Storrie, Hunt, Jones, Gilbert, Shelley, Pamment, Murfi n, Dodd, Boswell. Subs: Knee, Hadi, Keehan, Lewis, Clark.

Good performance sees off Arundel

Saturday September 26 - SCFL Premier DivisionBroadbridge Heath 4 - 0 Arundel

FootballDave Smith – Sports Editor

With the opposition side includ-ing players of the calibre of Scott Tipper, Barney Boutwood and Naill O’Hagan this was rightly conceded a diffi cult match for Heath.

Surprisingly though the visitors were very subdued all afternoon in a game that saw Heath very much on top from start to fi nish.

Manager Steve Painter was able to make a number of changes to the team that disappointed at East Preston in midweek, welcoming back Ollie Moore, Dan Sandell, Merv Bhujun and Tom Familton to the starting line-up.

The visitors should have gone

ahead in the 8th minute when the normally reliable Boutwood put a good chance wide. The miss was punished immediately by Tiago An-drade who collected a cross from Merv Bhujun fl icked the ball into the air before executing a perfectly timed overhead kick to give Heath the lead.

Arundel ‘keeper James Fernandez saved well from Stuart Chester and then Familton headed just wide as Heath pushed forward looking for a second. It was striker Andrade who eventually got that second goal 13 minutes before the break. Follow-ing a break away and pin point cross from Jamie Robinson Andrade beat Fernandez with a powerful header to send Heath in at half time two goals to the good. Scott Weller and Stuart Chester did not come out for the second half, both picking up in-juries. This did not disrupt Heath as

fi ve minutes into the half ‘keeper Fernandez pushed away a Bhujun eff ort straight to the feet of Andrade who had a simple task to complete his hat-trick. Heath completed the job on 77 minutes when full back Jamal Sultan chased down a long ball before fi nding Ollie Moore who fi red home for 4–0.

Heath Manager Steve Painter said “We were very, very good today, it was the strongest side I’ve been able to fi eld all season and yet we still have several players to come back. I just hope the player’s who came off today aren’t too badly in-jured because we have some tough fi xtures coming up in the next few weeks”.

Heath Team: M. Chester, Sultan, Robinson, S. Chester (Ozga 46), Familton, Waddingham, Moore, Weller (Wicking 46), Sandell (Flack 73), Andrade, Bhujun.

YM comeback earns FA Cup replay

Saturday September 26 - FA Cup Second Round QualifyingHorsham YMCA 2 – 2 Aveley

FootballTom Norris – Football Reporter

Horsham YMCA produced a battling second half fi ght back last Saturday, as they came from two goals down to draw 2-2 at home to ten-man Aveley in the second qualifying round of the

Emirates FA Cup at Gorings Mead.Goals from James Peagram and

Liam Nash gifted the Ryman League North Millers a 2-0 lead at the break, and the visitors should have then put the tie to bed as they squan-dered several gilt-edged second half chances. But Peter Buckland’s side rallied admirably and despite riding their luck, Sam Schaaf’s defl ected header and substitute Dean Wright’s low strike eleven minutes from time

completed an unlikely turnaround, as Aveley midfi elder Junior Appiah was sent off for violent conduct late on.

Manager Buckland commented: “It was a good comeback. We’re still in the cup and we’re still going to be in the draw on Monday. Who knows what the draw is going to throw at us in terms of an added incentive. I can tell you now that I’m not going up to Aveley on Wednesday just to fulfi l a fi xture, absolutely no way! If eve-

ryone’s available, I know exactly in my mind what we’ll be doing. I think that the boys are really up for it. In the fi rst half we were awful. I’ve got to say that tactically I got it one-hun-dred percent wrong. I tried to adjust things as best I could with the least amount of disruption to our pattern of play. In my opinion they (Aveley) have missed an opportunity today at 2-0 up. But we did do well in the second half. Not as good as we can

do, but I’m delighted that we pulled it back and got a draw. I’m happy to have another bite of the cherry, but we certainly aren’t going up there on Wednesday to make the numbers up.”

Horsham YMCA: Lockwood, Carden, Gathern, Dugdale, Doherty, Gedling, Hibbert (Hunter 60) D. Brown, Schaaf, D. Sullivan (Wright 60), N. Sullivan. Unused subs: Fox, White, J. Brown, Crane, O’Carroll.

Chesworth Rovers U12 3 - 2 Steyn-ing Town U12Chesworth Rovers U12's stay top of the Horsham A league following a very close home match with Steyn-ing. Fletch opened the scoring for the home side following some great football to breach the defence.

Josh grabbed a second before the half time whistle, the on-form strik-er putting the ball past the stranded keeper. After the whistle Steyning fought back and brought the score level at 2 - 2. Chesworth rallied and a shot was turned into the net by an unlucky Steyning defender for a 3 - 2 win.Steyning Town Community U15 1- 3 Chesworth Rovers U15

Chesworth Rovers overcame Stey-ning Town Community in a tight, tough match where the result was in doubt almost to the end. Chesworth took advantage of Steyning’s slow start to go 2-0 up within 20 min-utes with a Tim Bennett eff ort and a Michael Murray penalty. Steyning came back strongly and pulled a goal back soon after half time. The match was made safe by Max McAteer who scoresd on the counter attack with nine minutes remaining.Withdean Youth U15 2 - 1Loxwood Youth U15

Loxwood Youth just came up short in a physical match played on a 3G pitch against Division One side Withdean Youth in the cup. Lox-wood looked comfortable in the fi rst half and a Michael Murray goal after a perfect through-ball from Jamie Maunder set them up. Withdean equalised when the referee overruled the linesman’s fl ag for off side and then, as they took more control, went on to grab a narrow victory.Horsham Sparrows FC

Under 12 – The second home meeting with Lower Beeding and Handcross in two weeks saw the lead swing both ways before ending in a 3 – 3 draw. The away team scored in the fi rst minute but goals from Miguel and Hugh put Sparrows in front. Lower Beeding then scored twice in quick succession to be 2 – 3 up at half time. Hugh scored again in the open-ing minutes of the second half and Kane made some excellent saves to-wards the end. Man of the Match was Miguel.

Under 13 – The team played away at Lower Beeding and ran out com-fortable winners. Goals from Charlie, Lewis, Connor, Ashley and Luke con-tributed to a great team performance.

Under 14 – Sparrows started very brightly in this top of the table clash with Forest Row and were 3-0 up by the interval and carried on in the same vein scoring another goal early

in the second half. This seemed to spur Forest Row on as they scored 2 goals of their own and stretched the Sparrows defence in the fi nal 20 minutes. Sparrows ran out 4-2 win-ners and are now 1 point clear at the top of Division B. Man of the Match went to Joe for scoring 2 goals in a good all round performance. The other 2 goal scorers were Andrew and Frazer “F”.

Under 15 – A tough game at Dor-kinians saw Sparrows take all 3 points with a 2-1 victory. Goals from Luke and George secured the win with man of the match Rhys leading

a great team performanceUnder 16 - The U16’s played their

third league game of the season away to Lower Beeding and Handcross. Sparrows opened the scoring after 10 minutes with a fi ne header by Joel C. Sparrows then conceded twice be-fore Jack B scored the second goal for Sparrows to make it 2-2 at half time. A committed Sparrows side fought hard in the second half, with their ef-forts rewarded when Jacob T secured the 3-2 win fi ve minutes from the fi nal whistle. Man of the Match was Joel C.

Under 11 girls – The team played

their second set of games for the sea-son and ran out winners in one game and lost the other.

Women’s Team – A tough start to the season against the experienced Lewes side, Sparrows held on in a fairly even start but Lewis took the lead on 20 minutes to star the scor-ing. In the next 25 minutes Lewes hit 6 more goals making a seven goal defi cit at half time. Sparrows fought back showing excellent spirit to score 2 second half goals; the fi rst from Zoe from 25 yards and the second from Naomi rushing onto a through ball beating the defence and goal keeper.
