Hahndorf Academy Heysen Prize
The unique mix of art, heritage, music, food and entertainment bring the historic township of Hahndorf alive for ten days during the Heysen Festival. The festival formally acknowledges the magnificent artwork from the legendary artist, Sir Hans Heysen, who lived and worked in Hahndorf for more than 60 years. The opening of the Festival incorporates the announcement of winners in this year’s Heysen Prize for ‘Interpretation of Place’ at the Hahndorf Academy.The Heysen Prize Exhibition - the premier event of the festival will be on display in the Hahndorf Academy from Saturday 27 September to 6 October 2008. Music and art activities will also be a major highlight throughout the festival, featuring lunchtime entertainment daily in the Hahndorf Academy Courtyard where people can relax, enjoy and create.
The Artist’s Voice will also stage a group exhibition of paintings, sculptures and photographs entitled Salon des Refuses.

The Cedars Heysen’s ResidenceThe historic residence of Hans Heysen, ‘The Cedars’ is still owned by the Heysen family. It houses a fine collection of Heysen paintings and drawings and is located a short distance away from Hahndorf’s Main Street.
The garden, studios and house will be open to the general public with special interpretative exhibitions titled ‘in the steps of Hans Heysen’ staged throughout the grounds.
The Heysen estate covers an area of 60 hectares, within a natural bush setting. Home of the annual ‘Big Gum’ planting to honour Heysen’s love of the natural environment.
A walking trail is also featured on the property and directs visitors to his favourite painting sites. Also on the grounds is Heysen’s studio which still contains his painting materials, sketches and notes.
Heysen festival@theCedarsThe Cedars will be open to the public during the entire festival. It will be home to many exhibitions, environmental plantings, tours, music, fine foods and wine.

Heysen Concert in Cabaret Hahndorf Institute
A kaleidoscope of visual art and music including jazz, classics, stage and screen, popular and ‘Big Band’ hits. The spectacular annual Heysen Concert in Cabaret is always a favourite with a variety of artists making the night atmosphere come to life in the Hahndorf Institute.The Hahndorf Institute is located at 57 Main St, with ample parking at the rear. The Artist’s Trail Main Street
Today’s artists are strongly featured throughout the historic township creating an ‘Artists Trail’, where businesses and galleries combine to present a diverse collection of art and craft. View paintings, etchings, tribal sculptures, textiles, ceramics and glass work and more. A map outlining the location and nature of the artist’s is available from the Visitor Information Centre (41 Main Street). See next page for Artist Trail Map.
Streetscape CompetitionDaily the festival comes alive on the street where artists create paintings for inclusion in the Hahndorf Streetscape Art Competition later judged on public display. Anyone of any age is welcome to participate in this event with prize money totalling $1500.
Art Workshops and DemonstrationsBudding and practice artists can also take part in many workshops throughout the festival at the Hahndorf Institute and the Hahndorf Academy.An artist demonstration will also take place daily with Sculpturer Silvio Aopponyi, textile artist Jan Clifford and ceramic artist Rose McGuire.See ‘Daily Highlights’ at the back of this program for more details.
