salvation hath appeared to all men” – Titus 2:11

Introduction: O Zimbabwe has pass through various eras or

dispensations – colonial era when we were under the heavy hand of the oppressor, the post-independence era which had themes like “Gore regutsaruzhinji”, then 2000 the Cyclone Eline Era, 2007/8 the shortages, and 2016 Bond notes.

O In one way or the other life seemed doomed but by God’s grace we have come this far. Now, at the beginning of every year on the 6th of January the Christian community gathers and celebrates the Epiphany (Manifestation) of our Lord, Jesus Christ.

O In other words it ushers in a new dispensation on the Christian Calendar. The grand subject for the period is the incarnation message (John 1:14). In the incarnation or manifestation of Christ, a powerful dispensation is brought about – The Dispensation of Grace.

Exegesis: O Paul writes to Titus one of his sons in the faith who was

assigned to remain at Crete – setting things in order by election of leadership and further dealing with guidelines for Christian living. Critical to note however is the subject of Grace and Christology raised in the periscope read.

O The manifestations or epiphanies of Christ usher in the all-important subject for this discussion – GRACE. These texts deal with salvation (past, present, and future), with Christology (the person and work of Christ), and Pneumatology (the person and work of the Spirit), but central to their focus is the practical ramifications of this gracious working of God on behalf of all people.

The Wesleyan Perspective of Grace:

O Today’s subject can never be exhausted without giving due diligence to the understanding of John Wesley’s “Scriptural Way of Salvation”. He says that while humanity has “Free Will” God does not force himself on humanity but uses love to bring them into communion. Wesley describes God’s love as a “seeking love”. It is a love that lights a candle in the dark room like a woman who lost a coin in Luke 15:8.

O Within this kind of “seeking love” that took God to an extent of sending His son to seek that which is lost and die for it, that Wesley gives the three dimensions of Grace:

Page 6: The dispensation of grace sermon king david

a. Prevenient grace O - the divine love that surrounds all humanity and

precedes any and all of our conscious impulses. This grace prompts the first wish to please God, our first glimmer of understanding concerning God’s will, and our “first slight transient conviction” of having sinned against God.

O “Grace was given us in Christ Jesus before the beginning of time, but it has now been revealed through the appearing of our Saviour, Christ Jesus, who has destroyed death and has brought life and immortality to light through the gospel.” 2 Ti 1:9-10,

b. Saving or Justifying grace

O- We believe God reaches out to the repentant believer in justifying grace and accepting and pardoning love. It is the Holy Spirit which prompts the change of heart.

c. Perfecting or sanctifying grace

O- We hold that the wonder of God’s acceptance and pardon does not end God’s saving work, which continues to nurture our growth in grace.

Practical Demonstration of Grace:

O In every hospital, you go through the Registration, Casualty/Outpatients, Consultation, Observation room then the Dispensary.

Page 10: The dispensation of grace sermon king david

Practical Demonstration of Grace:

O Registration - Just as we came into the world, we just come as we are (Registered) with the effect of original sin,

O Casualty/Outpatients - then we are wheeled in a wheel chair (God has ushered us to the next level in spite of us) under the pain of the law which condemned us – the wheel chair does not produce healing effect but it is simply transportation in our current state. In the Casualty/Outpatients the basics happen – bold pressure check, blood sugar and temperature.

Practical Demonstration of Grace:

O Consultation Room – Like the veil that was split when Jesus was on the cross and called out – Tetelestai (It is finished), in the consultation room patients come face to face with the physician (the security guards at the hospital, the nurse aids, the nurses are now behind your back – John 10:8 “All that ever came before me are thieves and robbers: but the sheep did not hear them”). It is the physician that proposes corrective measures (theatre) writes a prescription and refers you to the dispensary.

Practical Demonstration of Grace:

O Dispensary - It is at the dispensary that the appropriate medication is given.

O Discharged – As you walk out of the hospital, your condition would have significantly changed, and it is through the manifestation of grace to a sinner through Christ that humanity has been saved from the impact of death – Romans 8:1 “There is now no condemnation to those that are in Christ…”

Conclusion:OMy call this morning is one of “responsible grace” as John Wesley puts it. It is one that comes into sync with God’s I therefore implore us all to open our hearts and minds to the great love of God – his Grace.
