It’s Summertime! Summer is a time to enjoy being outdoors. The skies are
sunny, the temperatures are warm, and the days are long. Many of us have fond memories of going swimming at the neighborhood
pool. Others cherish the time we spent with our families at picnics
and summertime foods like potato salad, coleslaw, deviled eggs,
fried chicken, and watermelon. Summertime is when kids are out
of school and families plan vacations, go to the zoo, and of course
visit Ted Drewes!
We asked some of our residents what their favorite sum-
mer time memories were:
“Stay at home vacations with my kids. Going to the free places like the zoo, Grant’s
Farm, and Purina Farms.” - Venida Fanara
“Playing sports. I liked playing baseball and I coached my kids’ teams.” -Ralph Scheibel
“I spent my summer on a bicycle. If you saw me you saw my bicycle.” -Pat Muehlenbeck
“Playing with my pals around the neighborhood. We played racing games with our
bicycles.” -Bill Channels
“Swimming in the Current River.” -Sammi Simmons
“We used to camp. We went to parks in different states.” -Jean Rich
“Going to my Grandma’s farm in Hermann, MO. I had fun up there with all the
animals.” -Ottie Mure
“We used to go to my Great Uncle’s 80 acre farm in Lebanon. We had to use a wa-
ter pump and we thought that was neat because we were used to faucets. My
brothers and I fought over who got to pump the water. “ -Mary Lewis
" Beer. I had to learn to acquire a taste for it, but once I liked it, I liked it."
-Jeanette Gravel

All About June...
June was the fourth month on the early Roman calendar, and it once had
only 29 days. When the Romans added January and February, June became the sixth
month. When Julius Caesar reformed the calendar in 46 B.C., he gave June
30 days. In both common and leap years, no other month begins on the
same day of the week as June.

Busy Fingers: Tools for
Dementia-Related Fidgeting By Ava M. Stinnett
During the mid to late stages of Alzhei-
mer’s and other dementia-related diseases,
specific behaviors typically occur. These might
include aggression in the form of shouting or hitting; repetition of words,
phrases, or actions; suspicion that causes misperception of particular
events; or paranoia surrounding the actions of caregivers and family
members. Another symptom—agitation—might be displayed as being
restless or fidgeting. For example, you might notice seniors with demen-
tia repeatedly picking at blankets or clothing, wringing their hands, twirling a wristwatch or ring, or
folding and unfolding pieces of paper. This could be due to anxiety caused by increased confusion,
disorientation, or the frustration that accompanies cognitive decline.
There are numerous activities that caregivers can try to help reduce loved ones’ anxiety while
making them feel engaged, productive, and satisfied. Granted, it can be challenging to find ways of en-
couraging someone with dementia to participate in an activity. But being entertained, staying busy, and
feeling a sense of accomplishment often translates to a better mood and reduced agitation.
One item that can help reduce agitation is
a “fidget blanket.” These lap-sized blankets or
quilts are made of a mixture of fabrics with differ-
ent textures like flannel, denim, satin, leather, or
burlap. To keep restless fingers busy, tightly an-chored items are attached. A loved one might
enjoy gadgets such as snaps, zippered or buttoned
pockets, Velcro closures, cross-stitched or deco-
rated patches, a clock face, or shoe eyelets with
shoelaces attached. You might want a more per-
sonalized fidget blanket with items to help elicit
curiosity, memories, or awareness. These could
include keychains, small laminated family photos,
or inexpensive jewelry pieces.
Here at Bethesda we are fortunate enough
to have many fidget blankets available to our resi-
dents. These blankets were made and donated by
Rosemary (pictured right). We are so grateful for
these tools and the time and care she spent mak-
ing them. If you feel your loved one would bene-
fit from one of these blankets please request one
from Social Services.

Sam started volunteering in September 2016 at Bethesda Dilworth.
He is a junior at De Smet Jesuit High School. He is in Cross Country and
Track and Field at school. Sam decided to do his junior volunteer service
project at Bethesda Dilworth because he likes hanging out with seniors
and hearing their stories. He transported residents to and from the
Beauty Salon while visiting them and helped with special projects.
After high school Sam plans on going to Mizzou College and major-
ing either in Meteorology, or Radiation Therapy. Sam said, “My experience
volunteering was fun and interesting because, I have never volunteered at
a senior living community and it opened up my perspective to want to
volunteer more with seniors.
