ESSAY STRATEGIES• The importance of the basic structure:

introduction, body (supporting evidence), conclusion.

• It is very important that students stay on topic throughout their essay. Veering off topic is the quickest and easiest way to lose points on the essay.

• Remember the basic framework – read the prompt carefully, create an outline, write the essay from the outline.

Begin with a strong thesis statement that states your opinion or assertion.

• This is the idea that you want to convince readers to agree with or the action that you want them to take.

• A good thesis statement should be strong and assertive.

• A thesis statement establishes a consistent tone (the author’s attitude toward the subject) that is maintained throughout the piece.

Make logical, emotional, or ethical appeals to persuade your readers.

• You might appeal to logic by using clear reasoning and providing facts and other evidence. (Remember supporting evidence on page 177?)

• You might appeal to emotion by using words with strong connotations (the emotional impression of a word).

• You might appeal to ethical concerns by discussing values and other moral issues.
