The Dickson County Chamber of Commerce and The Dickson County Soil

Conservation District recently hosted their annual

Farm City Banquet like it had been in years past.

The Farm City Banquet was held Tuesday,

November 10, 2015 at the Tennsco Community

Center. 204 attendees were present for Ribeye

Steaks cooked by Dickson Livestock Association

and sides catered by Ronnie Q’s BBQ, milk and

ice cream were donated by Daniel’s Dairy. Both

Dickson County FFA & Creekwood FFA had

members present to help with serving as well.

A night of recognition for individuals

and business who contribute to

agriculture in Dickson County was

enjoyed by all.

Recognition, by Mr. Jimmy Duke, was given to both Dickson County High School and

Creek Wood High School Soil Judging Teams. Each of these FFA teams, coached by

Jason Wallace and Zeb James, recently entered a Soil Judging Contest with other teams

across the state. They are required to use their knowledge of soil features and how they

affect other soil characteristics. Each member of the team received a pin furnished by

Dickson County Farm Bureau.

Chamber of Commerce Agriculture

Committee Chairman, Karen Seals and

Dickson County Soil Conservation

Chairman, Bennie Daniel presided over

the evening.

Recognition of Affiliate Memberships to the Soil Conservation District was given to

Bank of Dickson, Farm Credit Mid-America, FirstBank, First Federal Bank, Traditions

Bank, & TriStar Bank. These membership dues help the District to further educate in

agriculture and help support conservation initiatives.

Each year the Dickson County Soil Conservation District hosts a poster contest for all 3rd, 4th & 5th grade students from the Dickson County Schools. This year the theme was “Local Heroes, Your Hardworking Pollinators. David Matlock,

District Board Member presented awards to the 1st, 2nd, and 3rd place winners of each grade. All winners were invited to the banquet and received a plaque, ribbon and the teacher of the 1st place winner of each grade also received $100 for

classroom supplies.

Bennie Daniel was awarded Conservation Farmer of the Year for his conservation efforts

of Strip-Til Tobacco. Mr. Daniel has raised tobacco for many many years. But after

converting to Strip-Til Tobacco he has notice over the years less soil loss and healthier

soil. Mr. Daniel works very hard to promote soil conservation in this area

Ed & Nancy Polk were awarded the Forestry Conservation Award for their conservation

efforts to improve forestry resources for many years.

The Soil Conservation District also presented two awards, Conservation

Farmer of the Year and a Forestry Conservation Award.

Earth Team Volunteers were recognized by Sharon Englett, NRCS. These Volunteers have

help the Dickson County Soil Conservation Office tremendously throughout the year from

tree give-aways, Farm Tour, to Soil Education with Sammy Soil & making Editable Dirt.

The Chamber of Commerce presented three awards this year, Agriculture Educator of the Year,

Agriculture Business Leader of the Year, and Farm of the Year.

Zeb James of Creekwood High School was awarded Agriculture Educator of the Year. To honor

an individual who impressively contributes and provides leadership through his or her

involvement in agriculture in the classroom. Zeb teaches agriculture daily to high school

students. They have chickens they raise, a green house, and raised bed gardens, which they have

just dug sweet potatoes from. Zeb also brings goats to the school and has a school cow. He

encourages the students to participate in competitions such as goat & pig shows.

Dickson County Equipment was awarded Agriculture Business Leader of the Year.

Dickson County Equipment owner Keith Perelas run the New Holland dealership

here in Dickson County. They actively contribute and provide business leadership

through their involvement in agriculture to help the community in any way they can

from tractors used in parades to door prizes and donations for events.

Michael Adams Farm was awarded the Farm of the Year. Michael & his family have a

beautiful farm on Yellow Creek in Dickson County. Michael’s children are the 7th

generation to be raised on the farm in Yellow Creek. The Adams’ welcomed us this

past year on the Farm Tour to see their farm operations, TAEP Cost Share Barns,

TDA Cost Share Heavy Use Areas and Cross Fencing to rotate the Gelbvieh cattle he

raises

The Chamber Ag Committee also recognized, the Agriculture Scholarship Recipient,

Chandler Sullivan. Chandler was a Dickson County High School graduate and is

enrolled in Tennessee Tech in Cookeville. He is actively pursuing an education in

Agriculture. The Ag Committee offers an agriculture scholarship every year.

Chandler’s parents, Paul and Connie Sullivan were present to receive his recognition.
