The design and style of kitchens have changed more than other rooms in the home, over the years Kitchens should reflect the needs, wants and lifestyles of the households they serve. MAGNO * For how many people will food usually be prepared? More than one cook at a time? Meals elaborate or simple? How many appliances to be stored? Kitchen used for eating as well as food prep? What other activities will be carried out there? (laundry, Internet, homework) MAGNO Kitchens are usually arranged around work centers (areas of the kitchen that are especially equipped for certain chores). Most work centers are built around a major appliance or fixture and include both counter and storage space. A well-planned and efficient kitchen has three basic work centers: food storage, cooking and clean-up. MAGNO Work centers (areas of the kitchen that are especially equipped for certain chores). Food Preparation & Storage Counter for preparing food. Refrigerator and cabinets for storing utensils and food. Cooking & Serving Stovetop and oven for cooking and baking. Cabinets and counter for tools and utensils. Clean Up Sink and dishwasher. Cabinets for storing dishes, tools, and utensils. Today kitchens may also have a planning work center with a computer, bookshelves and desk. MAGNO The refrigerator is the focus of the fresh food storage. Non-perishables should be stored in other place. canned foods in pantry or cabinets spices, sauces, rice, etc. should be stored near the range For efficient storage, there should be a counter area at least 18 inches wide on the side the refrigerator door opens. MAGNO The focus of this center is the range, (in some kitchens a separate cooktop and oven); microwave oven. Need 21 of counter space on each side of the cooktop. What other items belong in the cooking center? Answer: small cooking appliances (toaster, electric skillet, pots, pans and utensils, pot holders, serving bowls, etc). MAGNO This center includes the sink and dishwasher, a garbage disposal, recycling bins and trash compactor. Dishes, glassware and silverware storage. Storage for dish-washing detergents, scouring powder, dishcloths, and towels. MAGNO * Studies reveal that more time is spent at the clean up center than any other area of the kitchen. Need 36 of counter space on each side of the sink. Dishwasher is usually located next to or near the sink. MAGNO One clue to a kitchens efficiency is its work triangle (The triangle formed by drawing imaginary lines to connect the sink, range or cooktop and refrigerator). Because most kitchen work occurs in these areas, the work triangle is the basis for kitchen design. MAGNO The triangle should not be so small that the kitchen is cramped or so large that the work centers are inconveniently far apart. Ideally, the total length of the sides of the triangle should be between 12 and 22 feet. To accommodate a wheel chair- 14 ft. to 24 ft. MAGNO A work triangle functions best when the three sides are nearly equal, with the sink located between the refrigerator and the range. Traffic passing through should not cross the work triangle. MAGNO Appliances and cabinets are arranged along two walls, with an aisle between them. Both ends of the kitchen may be open, or one end may be a wall. Advantage: A compact efficient work triangle. Disadvantages: Too cramped for more than one person. If both ends of kitchen are open, traffic interrupts meal preparation. MAGNO Appliances and cabinets are arranged along two adjoining walls. Permits an open area that may be used for dining. Advantages: Work triangle is not interrupted by traffic. More than one can work conveniently. More continuous counter and cabinet space. Disadvantage: Corner storage might not be fully accessible. MAGNO Appliances and cabinets are arranged along three adjoining walls. Advantages: More continuous counter and cabinet space than any other layout. A major appliance may be placed along each wall so that the sides of the work triangle are equal. Disadvantage: Corner storage may not be fully accessible. MAGNO The range, sink, refrigerator and cabinets are arranged along the wall. Advantage: saves space. Disadvantages: Very limited: storage and counter space. MAGNO Extends out into the room; Usually a cabinet below the countertop. Can have many purposes. Advantages: Can serve as an open divider between kitchen and dining area or family room. Can be used to add a 4 th countertop to a u-shaped kitchen. Disadvantage: Some may not like the openness of a peninsula. MAGNO Advantages: More function Offer many options Disadvantages: Can be a traffic obstacle if not well planned MAGNO An you help this kitchen????? MAGNO Do you like this kitchen?!?
