United Kingdom

Southampton has extended one of the outfalls for its secondarytreated sewage by a further 80 metres into Ashlett Creek ofSouthampton Water. A marker post fitted with a light beacon towarn marine traffic has been erected at the end of the extendedoutfall by specialist marine installation contractors, Visser & SmitHanab UK Ltd of Kettering.

The 4.5m marker post has beenprotected by the application ofSeaShield 100 Series to the areasaffected by the tidal rise and fall,together with the splash zone.

A key component of the

SeaShield System is Denso MarinePiling Tape which is a coldapplied petrolatum based tape forapplication under water. TheSeaShield jackets, which protectthe tape from mechanical

damage, are fabricated fromuv light stabilised HDPE.They are fixed into positionwith non-corrodible bandsor threaded fasteners.

Denso Void-Filler ProtectsSubmarine Dockyard Anchors

Corrosion Prevention - Ground Anchors

Denso Void-filler has been specified as an aid to corrosion preventionafter the construction and installation of 42 No.21 strand groundanchors within the Submarine Refit complex at DevonportRoyal Dockyard, Plymouth.

The anchors are between 52mand 69m in length and replaceexisting anchors that stabilise 5Basin North Wall between 14and 15 dock within theSubmarine Refit Complex.

The work is being carried outby the MOD and DML approvedcontractors, SystemsGeotechnique Ltd, based inSt.Helens, Merseyside and Alton,Hampshire.

The Denso Void-Filler is usedin three ways on this project:

1. Each 15.2mm individual anchor strand is coated with Void-filler and then covered with a plastic sheath during manufacture.

2. The head detail of each anchor, once installed and stressed, is pumped full of Void-filler and the exposed strands above the anchor head are covered with a layer of Void-filler.

3. Each anchor head is then sealed with a steel ‘top hat’, which is bolted to the anchor bearing plate and then pumped full of Void-filler.

Denso Void-filler is therebypreventing the ingress of bothwater and air to each anchorhead, the main ingredients forcorrosion especially in themarine environment of thedockyard.

Denso Void-filler is based ona microcrystalline petrolatum

containing corrosion inhibitorsand moisture repellents. It formsa permanently flexible mediumfor the encapsulation andprotection of bearings, tendons,

stay cables etc. It has beenused in a number of majorcivil engineering projectsincluding bothSevern Bridges.

Denso Protection on SevernTrent Elan Valley Aqueduct

Corrosion Prevention - Mild Steel Support Beams

Interserve plc of Birmingham are currently carrying out a majorcontract for Severn Trent Water at its Elan Valley Aqueduct inPowys, Mid-Wales. The work involved will enable water to beextracted from the aqueduct for a new nearby process treatmentworks, from where it will be pumped to a new reservoir. This ispart of Severn Trent’s ongoing programme of upgrading potablewater supplies for its customers.

The project includes theconstruction of an H-shapeduniversal mild steel beam tocarry the weight of the waterextraction pipework over the110 year old aqueduct structure.Corrosion prevention for theuniversal beam is being achievedby the use of a wrap of Denso

Denso Tape is a non-wovensynthetic fibre fabric impregnatedand coated with an adhesivecompound based on petrolatum. Denso PVC Self Adhesive Tape isa plasticised PVC sheeting coatedone side with a rubber resinpressurised sensitive adhesive.

Corrosion Prevention - Welded Pipeline Joints

Protal 7200 was selected asthe coating due mainly to itsextremely fast cure and excellentcathodic disbondment results.Side-by-side tests againstcompetitive liquid epoxies andshrink sleeves, conducted bythe pipeline company, was theultimate deciding factor inselecting Protal 7200. Protal7200 is a two-part, 100% solidsepoxy coating that can beapplied in one coat up to 50mils. The coating exhibitsexcellent cathodic disbondmentresults of 4 mm @ 150°F(65°C). In addition to its fastcure, Protal 7200 also exhibitsexcellent adhesion properties,outstanding gouge/abrasionresistance and isenvironmentally safe.

By preheating the pipe surfaceup to 180°F (82°C), the coatingwas cured in 15 minutes to ashore D hardness of 75 allowingthe pipe to be holiday testedand pass over the final rollerson the push rack system. UnlikeFBE, which requires expensive

and heavy equipment, Protal7200 only requires a brush orroller to apply. The costly riskof downtime due to equipmentfailure is eliminated. Due to thesecost savings Protal 7200 is idealfor a variety of field or shopapplications including girth

welds, tie-ins, drillingapplications, station piping,fittings and repairs to FBE.

Butyl Tape Protection for VitalPotable Water Application

Corrosion Prevention - Bolted Flange Crevices

The basic design is anunderwater excavation that leadsinto a large volume pumpchamber where four submersiblepumps will discharge through900mm piping. The nature ofthe chamber design lends itselfto including several 1060 ODbolted flanges and valve units.

Before the project was fullycommissioned the contractorsfound early evidence of crevicecorrosion on 22 of these flanges.Given that this installation willonly be used in times ofextreme emergency there is zerotolerance for breakdowns andleaks, especially as a corrodedflange unit could be submersedunder 10 metres of turbulentraw water and would requirethe entire the system be shutdown and drained.

Following the NSW government’s recent decision to ensureemergency and on-going reliable water supplies for Sydney, a ‘deepwater’ access sump was created in the Prospect Reservoir.

As there is a need for longterm protection demandingAS4020 potable water safecoatings that offer potential forcoating and flange maintenanceDenso engineered a basic systemthat utilises our new ButylMastic and Butyl Primeras its platform.

The flanges were first wirebrushed to remove any activecorrosion; the client alsorequired that the flange edgeswere sanded clean. The creviceand flange edge are coatedwith a consistent layer of ButylPrimer which was allowed totack dry. The butyl mastic wasthen rolled and stretched into abead which was forced intothe crevice ‘until refusal’.

Keeping the interleaving inplace to guide tension weapplied a single layer of ButylMastic around the circumferenceof the flange. Care was taken topress the mastic down firmlyand to avoid over stretching themastic strip. The interleaving isthen removed and discarded.

An HDPE (2mm) strip wasapplied over the Butyl Masticto provide protection fromturbulence, possible debrisand some UV exposure. This issecured in place by the new25mm Smartband and reusablelocking head.

Even though the applicatorswere working from boats theclient was pleased to see thatfrom cleaning to strappingeach of these 1060 ODbolted flanges took only20 minutes to complete.

Canada

SeaShield Series 500 SystemContinues to Create Businesson Canada’s East Coast

Restoration - Concrete Jetty Piles

The two projects are theresult of the very successfulintroduction of the Series 500system that incorporates DensoFiberglass jackets andepoxy/aggregate mix forrebuilding and restoringconcrete pilings on wharf anddock structures.

In the case of the BayshorePower Project, the material isused at the loading dock facilityand in the case of the BayshoreTerminal, it represents anotherconstruction year for pilingrestoration during low tides.

Following the successful introduction of the new Series 500epoxy/aggregate system of concrete restoration in the fall of 2006,Denso Canada has now landed a new project for this system at theBayshore Power Project in Saint John, New Brunswick as well asan extension of the Bayside Terminal and Loading Wharf inWestern New Brunswick at St. Andrews.

The Terminal project involvescompleting a total of 200 pilingsover the next several years.

This system is continuing togrow in popularity as more andmore concrete pilings haveeroded to the point wherestructural stability if a majorfactor in either replacing thepiling or repairing it. The cost ofreplacement is prohibitive andDenso has offered their systemas a very cost effective andlong term solution topiling restoration.

Densotherm HD SystemProtects Water Pipelines Tee’s

Corrosion Prevention - Pipeline Tee’s

Denso South Africarecommended the DensothermHD system for the corrosionprotection of various compositeand crotch plated tee’s for theproject. MPC JV, the pipelinecontractor, awarded theapplication of the Densothermto GBM, a Denso approvedcontractor who is basedin Secunda.

In total there are 255 tee’s onthe pipeline which is due forcompletion in September 2007.

The VRESAP (Vaal River Eastern Sub-System Augmentation Project)is a 115km 1.9m diameter pipeline running from the Vaal Dam tothe Secunda area, supplying water to power stations and a major fuelrefinery in the area.
