TODAY’S WEATHER HIGH: 33 LOW: rising to 34 By FRED SWIFT I think political correctness has run amok. We are being conditioned to give up certain terms and use new milder language that someone has decided will be less likely to offend anyone. The growing demands of political correctness, sometimes just called PC, is getting crazy. Where did it come from and who advances it? Some say the term originated in a Think Tank in Germany in 1923. In any event it didn't show up in the U.S. until about 1990. Since then it has been encouraged on college campuses, and especially by the mass media. Since everyone gets so much information from TV, radio, newspapers or the Internet, PC is constantly put before the public and readily accepted in some quarters. Here in Hamilton County as in much of Middle America, the extremes of PC are not taken too seriously, but over time it works its way into our speech and our thinking. Recently, we heard of the lyrics to the old holiday song 'Baby it's Cold Outside' being rewritten to be more PC because it might offend some women. The idea was that the song promoted date rape and needed to be sanitized. So, it looks like the entertainment industry has gone overboard into the demands of PC. For several years now we have been encouraged to use the term 'Happy Holidays' instead of 'Merry Christmas' so as not to offend those who don't celebrate Christmas. There has been some push back on that one. I've noticed the more conservative newsmen and others on national TV going out of their way this year to wish listeners a Merry Christmas. But, overall PC is still on the move. somewhat offended by some of it such asthe drive to call American Indians nativeAmericans I was born in this country andshould be able to say Im a native Americaneven though I have no Indian heritage Ofcourse we are supposed to use terms likeAsian Americans and African AmericanThese folks assuming they were born hereare also just Americans even native Amer-icans if they like

I still get confused as to whether I cancall a female a girl if she looks 18 or moreI guess that is politically incorrect eventhough females of substantially greaterage often call themselves girls I knowyoure not supposed to call a female restau-rant employee a waitress Its now a serverAnd I dont understand why a former airlinestewardess is now a flight attendant To mestewardess sounds more professional andaccurate

Even our local public schools haveadopted PC when referring to holidays Itsnow Winter Break instead of ChristmasVacation and Spring Break instead of EasterVacation You cant leave any religiousconnotation in such things as vacations

And even in church we find many denomi-nations have taken Onward Christian Sol-diers and Battle Hymn of the Republic outof their hymnals too militaristic

Politically correct terminology alsoevolves What used to be handicapped isnow physically challenged But so far themarkings on parking spots havent beenchanged

So it goes I guess where it stops nobodyknows

somewhat offended by some of it such asthe drive to call American Indians nativeAmericans I was born in this country andshould be able to say Im a native Americaneven though I have no Indian heritage Ofcourse we are supposed to use terms likeAsian Americans and African AmericanThese folks assuming they were born hereare also just Americans even native Amer-icans if they like
