THE DEFINITIVE
On Thursday, February 11th,
from 6:00 pm to 8:00 pm, KIPP Infin-
itys Nonfiction Winter Exhibition re-
turned. All KIPPsters at KIPP Infinity,
5th-8th grade, presented their topics to
their parents, teachers, guests, and
judges. The judges were from Maverick
Capital, the KIPP NYC Shared Services
Team, and KIPP Infinity. Months of
hard work paid off for those who were
invited to this years event.
Though many teachers and staff
members helped students on their pro-
jects, there were two teachers who
started it all. Ms. Willis, 6th grade Non-
fiction Studies teacher, first got inspired
on a project done in high school on jazz
vocals. This project was completed
during her senior year as part of her high
schools graduation requirement. Mr.
Vea, 7th grade American History, teacher
said, Everyone should be passionateabout something, and thats what this
experience is really all about - sharing
your passion.
There were some
rules that needed to be fol-
lowed. Each KIPPster had
to conduct research, pro-
duce a written report, and
create a board presentation.
Some KIPPsters had the
option of going above and
beyond by creating a
PowerPoint presentation or
a 3-D model. The students
who met their grades pro-
ject requirements were in-
vited to participate in this
event.
The grand prize
winner earned a laptop. The first place
winners from each grade level earned a
Flip camera. Trophies were also
awarded to the top ten projects in each
grade. In addition, plaques were
awarded in the following categories:Love of Learning, Grit, Creativity, Best
Writing, and Curiosity. The results of
this years Exhibition were not available at
press time.
The journalism staff worked on
their own topics like DNA/RNA (Orlando
Garcia), Leonardo da Vinci (Lourdes
Delgado), Animal Testing (DaijahDaniels), Multiple Personality Disorder
(Argenis Marmol), and much more.

KIPP Infinity implements new attendance policy to beef up attendance
Theres a way to get an extra star
on your paycheck, but you can also get
another deduction. (Its +3 if you
achieve perfect attendance for the entire
week, and -6 for an unexcused absence.)
Mr. Negron has set the following
school-wide goal: 97% of students will
be on time and at school, or provide a
note for their lateness or absence. The
grade with the best attendance record
will earn a dance party known as the
AttenDance.
So, what happens if you are late
or absent? Nothing, if you bring a doc-
tors note or a parents note. Of course,
notes like I overslept will still result in
a strike. What happens if you get too
many strikes? If you get 10 or more
strikes, you will not be eligible for the
end-of-the-year trip. The best way to
avoid all this complexity is to come to
school on time - and come every day.
In sum, if you have to be late or
absent, bring a note. Theres a difference
between a valid reason and an excuse.
You know that, and your teachers know
that. Just be on time!
As of press time, the fifth grad-
ers (Class of 2017) had the best atten-
dance record with 94.4% on time and at
school. In second place was the sixth
grade (Class of 2016) with 93.9%. In
third place was the eighth grade with
92.1%. Coming in last was the seventh
grade with 92.0%.

In December, Williamsburg Col-
legiate Charter School hosted a mathcompetition where the KIPP Team and
Family used what they learned in class to
compete against other charter schools inthe New York / New Jersey area.
Eight lucky 7th and 8th graderswere chosen to be on the team; sadly,
two key members werent able to make
it. Jason Bravo (2015), Samaiyah Patrick
(2015), Samantha Reyes (2015), OrlandoGarcia (2015), Johnathan Baldera (2014),and Luiggy Vidal (2014) competed at the
event. KIPP Infinity was split into two
groups: Samantha, Samaiyah, and Jasonwere on one team, and Orlando, Johna-
than, and Luiggy were on another.Though both Infinity teams com-
peted against each other, they both hadone common goal: to bring home gold.
Unfortunately, the team did not meet its
goal, even with the support of Mr. Vea(7th grade history and writing), Ms.
Kubagawa (7th grade math), and Mr.
Johnson (8
th
grade math), who were pre-sent at the competition.
The math teams next competition
took place on February 6th. The resultsof that competition were not available at
press time.Until next time, roll your numbers
and pull down the shades when you di-
vide!
KIPP Infinity will be hosting its
2nd annual Black History Month showon March 4th. Some of the perform-
ances will be by Mr. Johnsons stepteam, Mr. Griffith and Ms. Boiess
swing dance, Mr. Almeidas hip hop
dance, Mr. Maddens chorus group,Mr. Graham and a team of sixth grad-
ers performing spoken word, Ms.Bravo and Mr. Willeys spoken word,
and lastly, the band with Mr. Novickand Mr. Thomas.
Mr. Madden, chorus teacher,
created KIPP Infinitys first Black His-tory Month show last year. He is one
to know that putting on shows takes alot of hard work and determination.
Mr. Madden said, regarding thechorus, I am so proud of all the KIPP-sters in the chorus for their work pre-
paring for the show. They have grownso much. I think that it will be their
best performance yet!
It takes a lot of practice to getthese acts right. Some of these KIPP-
sters even have to stay after school, on
top of all the academic work that they
have to complete.
Jason Bravo, a guitar player inthe band, said, The band has inspired
me to open up a new side of my per-sonality. I love to play in concerts, and
the hard work really pays off.
A KIPPster in chorus, KatherineVillar, said, Since the 5th grade, I have
improved, and now I know I will feelconfident on stage, singingKnock You
Down, by Keri Hilson.Congratulations to all the KIPP-
sters who are showing a love of learn-
ing and hard work in preparation forthe big night on March 4th.

Do many ofyou wonder who the
genius behind Valen-
tines Day was? It allstarted when Em-
peror Claudius IIcame up with the idea
that men were better soldiers when theywere single, so he banned marriage.
The problem came up when a priest
named Valentine decided to ignore theEmperors law, and kept performing
marriages for young couples. As soonas the Emperor found out, he decided
to jail Valentine. It was a total loss forhim. While in jail, Valentine fell inlove with the jailers daughter. He was
then sentenced to death. So he decidedto write a letter and ended it with

On January 5, 2010, a fire brokeout on the roof of a Washington D.C.
KIPP school. All students and staff
members were evacuated safely.
The fire was caused by a large air
conditioning unit. Crew members were
renovating the school when the fire brokeout according to fire department spokes-
man, Pete Piringer.
Though clearly not an easy job,the firefighters were able to put out the
fire. The KIPPsters were allowed backinto the building. No one was injured by

China, Puerto Rico, and Los Angeles,California. Though these trips may seem
very exciting to go on, the KIPPsters will
have to work hard in order to attend one
of these three trips.
In order to go to Puerto Rico,KIPPsters must earn a GPA of at least a

zero suspensions. There, the KIPPsterswill spend five days exploring the rain

Dear Depressed,
Friendship is more important than a crush. Is this per-
son a true friend? If she is a good friend to you, you shouldntlose her because you two like the same person. One thing you
can do is talk to her about crushing on the same guy. Maybeyou two should really see is if it worth losing your friendship
just for a boy you both have a crush on. You will both havecrushes growing up that will last for a short time, but your
friendship with each other will last so much longer.
Sincerely,
Tiffany D.

KIPP Infinitys Girls Basketball Team is off to agreat start. As of Thursday, February 4th, the team has not
lost a single game. Their current record is 3-0.
Ms. Willis, the girls basketball coach and 6thgrade nonfiction teacher, said, I am very excited about
this years team. We have a lot of old faces and newfaces, which is always exciting. We are very balanced
this year - the girls are well-rounded in terms of their ball
handling skills, overall athleticism, and knowledge of the
game.
On February 3rd, the girls achieved their third win,
this time against I.S. 195. The final score was 16-9.
The game was so exciting and there was so much
energy, said Mayeiris Rivera (2014).
Ashley Solomon (2015) said, Weve been tryingto play them for a while now. The first scheduled game
between KIPP Infinity and I.S. 195 was canceled.

Boys Basketball Team shows
some potential
On Wednesday, February 3rd, the KIPP InfinityBoys Basketball Team played against I.S. 195. This was
a highly anticipated game by both KIPPsters and I.S. 195
students alike. KIPP Infinity lost with a final score of 39-
33.
In a one-on-one interview, Coach Griffith ex-
plained why he thought the team was losing some of its
games. Were trying to teach fundamentals like rebound-ing and boxing out because we lack them. For example,
on offense, because we dont set screens, we dont get
easy baskets.
Griffith highlighted a few key players this season.
One KIPPster from the Class of 2015 is a standout. Chris-topher Ramos is a leader who shows a lot of grit on the
court. Griffith further commented that if Christopherdevelops a consistent jump shot, hes going to be a domi-
nant player in the eighth grade. Griffith was quick topoint out that the eight eighth graders on the team are
leaders as well, but Christopher has something special.
The key to defending the teams championship,
according to Griffith, is the group of eighth graders who
are relatively new to the sport. Players like CesarQuintanilla (2014) and Dionys Gutierrez (2014) have
great raw talent. If theyre able to harness their talent,
they could really make a difference for the team.
