After years of planning and trying to secure funding, construction crews are on site, shovels are in the ground, and

work is ready to begin on the Guilford Veterans of Foreign Wars (VFW) Post 7666. On Nov. 29, members of the VFW, contractors, and town and

state officials gathered for the groundbreaking of the project.

The VFW Post, located on Mill Road, has long been in need of repairs. Conversations about rebuilding the structure began more than a decade ago, but hit a snag during the 2008 recession. In 2014, then-state representative Pat Widlitz secured a $1,347,479 state grant

for extensive repairs to the 1925 building. “It makes me feel good about the state of Connecti-cut and its willingness to help out people who have given service to our country,” Widlitz said in a June 2014 press release. “There are many veterans returning home now, and this VFW is

While moving back and forth be-tween southeastern Connecticut and National Guard stations in the South with two kids, Waterford native Ko-rie Witcraft found there weren’t any stores or groups around that provid-ed support for breastfeeding, cloth

diapering and natural approaches to parenting.

With her family’s most recent re-settlement in Niantic, she decided to start her own store, Nature’s Nest, in a tiny shopfront on Methodist Street.

Inspired by a cousin who worked in a natural parenting store in Montana, Witcraft opened in August 2015, start-

ing with cloth diapers and children’s clothing. The store has since doubled in size and expanded to offer other products as well as classes for chil-dren and parents.

“With our route for pregnancy be-ing so medical and not as natural as I had thought it would be growing up, I wanted something to be normal and

natural,” she said.Witcraft said her first daughter had

issues breastfeeding while they were stationed in North Carolina. But the only groups available met just once a month.

After her second daughter was born here, she started looking into the

Yes, New London Metro is an upscale metro on Connecticut’s Shore, where 350,000 people live and work in defense, high-tech, tourism, casinos and the arts.

But we’re also classic New England, where you’ll find traditional sea coast villages, miles of beautiful beaches, lighthouses, cottages and sailing ships.

We’re “Connecticut Coast & Country.”

Tourists love our casinos, among the world’s largest — Mohegan Sun, Foxwoods Resort Casino and Foxwoods Towers.

And they love our attractions, like Mystic Seaport and Mystic Aquarium with Dr. Robert Ballard’s Institute for Exploration, which first discovered the wreckage of the Titanic.

We’re proud of our role in America’s defense — home to the U.S. Coast Guard Academy, and “the Submarine Capital of the World.”

• The Naval Submarine Base - New London (“the First and Finest Submarine Base”).

• General Dynamics Electric Boat, which builds the nation’s sub fleet.

• USS Nautilus Museum, which features America’s first nuclear submarine.

We love the arts, too, from The Garde Arts Center to The Eugene O’Neill Theater Center, to the Florence Griswold Museum, featuring paintings by many of America’s impressionists.

New London Metro is one of the top 20 metros in the nation

in median household income. Our median income — $66,233 is 25% higher than the median

income of the U.S.
