The Dangers of Sitting

description

Americans sit an average of 8 hours per day -- more time than we spend sleeping. All of this inactivity can raise the risk of heart disease, diabetes, cancer, muscle and spine problems, and depression. Perhaps most alarmingly, researchers tell us that being sedentary can lead to premature death, even for people who exercise regularly. Studies have found that people who sit 11 or more hours per day have a 40 percent greater risk of dying in the next three years than those who sit just four hours daily. The good news is that we don’t have to spend all our spare time at the gym in order to turn things around. Simply making a conscious effort to get up from our chairs and couches and move around more each day can significantly improve our health. That’s why, at the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation, part of our effort to build a culture, includes the promotion of walking meetings.
