People, not profit!

We all have to live in an economic system focused on profit and not on the well being of people. As a result of this system every year, the poor get poorer and the rich get richer. Although, there are things like overproduction and modern technology, many people are suffering from diseases, hunger and po-verty. All these things are directly connected to capi-talism.

Privatization, deregula-tion, liberation – Just to name a few headlines of the neoliberal revolution that has been going on for decades. Speculation and uncontrolled financi-al markets are dominating politics and economics worldwide. There is no and never has been a trace of a real democratic econo-mical system. Not even the many worldwide economi-cal crises’ convinced the

neoliberal actors to change their ways. After the cri-sis everything has stayed the same. International organisations such as the IMF are pressing for more privatization and govern-ments worldwide are kee-ner than ever on austerity programs at the expense of the majority of the popula-tion, even though we need redistribution of wealth from top down instead of bottom up. We have to get rid of a system that makes a few people rich and im-poverishes the masses!

Shortly after the last eco-nomical crisis the world has had to face the ine-vitable after-effects such as youth unemployment, which is threatening the future prospects of mil-lions of young people worldwide. Furthermore, the states, which are full

of debt are forcing peop-le, who have not triggered this crisis and who already have to work under preca-rious conditions, to pay for the crisis of an economic-al system that has always been exploiting them. Me-anwhile, rich people and banks, who are responsib-le for that crisis, were ne-ver asked contribute finan-cially to the tax load. That is why we demand: TAX THE RICH!! Because if there are only a handful of people possessing more than 50% of the world’s wealth there hast to be a change of direction, which must include: higher pro-perty taxes, a worldwide financial transaction tax and inheritance tax!Peter

Cloud and rain and mud and music

Today just past noon the clouds covered our camp with rain and turned our streets and the camp-site into a mud filled swamp. But did this stop us having a good time? Of course not! Many of our comrades started to build up their own free-parties and the ORG-team has to tell you, that we love this. We love this, because it’s a poli-tical action, it’s an action of self-organisation and that’s why we are here. Because only well orga-nised the working class can free itself. We have to be organised to achieve our goals and of it is to tax the rich. Worldwide.daily

If you have been to the Jo-hanna Dohnal main square at 3 pm. yesterday you may have stumbled upon the volleyball tournament sponsored by Stabilo. The teams were organised in a special way. There have to be 6 players. 50 percent have to be women and at

least two nations have to be in one team. About 4 teams joined the tournament. Be-cause it was sponsored by Stabilo the prizes consis-ted of pencils, rubbers and some markers. Although the weather was not ideal it was still a very exciting tournament. Kappi

Perhaps you were sur-prised when you did not find any workshops sche-duled for Thursday. The reason for that was that the organizing team wanted to give everybody the oppor-tunity to bring up an issue he or she thinks is impor-tant to discuss. Many people took the op-portunity and organized workshops about the en-vironment, trade unions, slut walks, the Bologna process, etc. The one about the Bologna process was quite interesting. There the participants could bring in their own experiences and opinions all the time. While the goals of that process – e.g. enhancing student mobility, having a more standardized uni-versity system in Europe – may have been desirable, the implementation caused many problems. In many countries students expe-rienced more stress due to more education being squeezed in less time. A

factor that makes it worse is that universities often are not well-funded. There is a struggle in many places to get used to this new sys-tem and to slowly adapt ac-cording to the experiences with it.

Many workshops did not have a lot of participants. While later on it may have been caused by the heavy rain, earlier it was more likely due to people still sleeping or not knowing enough about them. At least the latter excuse does not work on Friday.Moritz

statementsWhat would you consider the biggest political prob-lems in your country?

Esiona, 21, from AlbaniaI think it is fair if rich people have to pay higher ta-xes . After all, they have more money, and I consider it their duty to help the ones who are not as lucky. It is a good idea to use the queen as a model because everyone knows her.

Konchuk, 26, Chokey, 36, and Dhondup, 31, from TibetRich people should pay higher taxes. Now they just get away with claiming to support, for example, charity organisations, which even relieve them from paying as much taxes as ordinary people do. Share the wealth!

Quentin, 26, and Paul, 23, from FranceIt is a good idea to tax capital – in the end, taxes have to be fair, and is it fair to charge the people who earn just enough to make ends meet proporti-onally more than those who can’t even count how much money they have? It is certainly not. The campaign itself is very funny and well-made.

Barbara, 34, from GhanaGhana, there are some very rich people opposing the many people who are very, very poor. The poor have to pay taxes for everything except for food – that means that even buying a plain t-shirt can become unaffordable. Taxing property is absolutely necessary to relieve the poor. The campaign is very good, and will be remembered by many people from all over the world.

Viktor, 18, AustriaI consider it a very important campaign, which is also well designed. I appreciate the fact that the SJOE is concerned with the rights of the working class.

Heidi is the unofficial mas-cot of Socialist Youth Aus-tria, which symbolizes the fight against right wing extremism. When there are dark times in Austria, where Nazi – sympathizing parties pollute our society, Heidi shows up to clean up racist dirt and pollution. She travels through Austria to express her anger against right wing extremism and in the process she takes ac-tions against it. Heidi helps us to hand out leaflets and

information brochures at our various events and par-ties. You can also see her in her full beauty on all the “Against Right Wing” Sti-ckers from Socialist Youth Austria (SJÖ). On the sti-ckers she is enjoying an awesome meal – some Nazi guy. When Heidi is tempo-rally unemployed, she helps the team of “The Daily” to hand out the Newspaper. So watch out – in everyone of us sleeps a little Heidi!Viki

On Thursday Barbara Prammer, the president of the national council, Pia Locatelli, President of the SI and Vuyiswa Tule-lo, Vice President of IUSY held a lecture concerning Human Rights in connec-tion with women and gen-der equality. Firstly, Pia Locatelli talked about how long it took to establish women’s rights as human’s

rights. In 1948 human’s rights were declared by the UN, but it took 45 ye-ars for women’s rights to be approved as human’s rights. Moreover, she mentioned the essential importance of an interna-tional framework, where strategies are developed to bring about positive chan-ges for women. Secondly, Barbara Prammer empha-

sized the necessity of figh-ting against right-wing fundamentalism. Further-more, two examples were stated by her. The first one concerned the debate about the Austrian nati-onal anthem, which only stated “proud sons” and not daughters. Another example she made was the point about the fight against domestic violence.

The last speech was held by Vuyiswa Tulelo, a very enthusiastic talker, who made her points very clear. As a mother of two she is very concerned about the lack of proper childcare facilities. Also, she men-tioned that instead of just talking about things and in the end doing nothing, decisions have to be made and change has to happen in order to push the fron-tier forward.

Afterwards, a discussion was held. Topics included the overrepresentation of men at the IUSY, in the de-

legations as well as in the workshops. The answer to this was that we all have to work together, but may-be also sanction those who don’t fulfil the quota. Moreover, it was establis-hed that child care is not a women’s but a society’s issue. The conclusion of the lecture and discussion consisted of raising awa-reness of women’s prob-lems by conducting more campaigns and to put our theories in practice.Veri and Enesa

Also on the Johanna Doh-nal main square a Human Table Soccer field had been built up. For those who cannot imagine what that is exactly: People hang on some ropes which are si-milar to the ones from a normal table soccer. Many people took some time just

to watch these very exciting games at the main square. As soon as some peop-le left, others ran into the field to play. For those who have not watched it yet, do not despair: There will be another one. Kappi
