Greetings

As my time as Dean of SAAGO, Southern Arizona American Guild of Organists, draws to a close, I would like to thank each of you for your support for the work of the AGO. The chapter officers have contributed significant time, energy, and fine work that has resulted in many updates and projects the past four years. Some of the highlights include a new identity with a logo designed specifically for our chapter, new website design, a newly updated Operating Procedures Guideline, expanded gifting opportunities for the work of the chapter, expansion of our advertising base, and programming that expands beyond the Tucson metropolitan area to increase awareness in all of Southern Arizona.

This work will continue beginning in July led by our newly elected Dean, Douglas Leightenheimer and Sub-Dean, Sara Tobe. In fact, there are many new and exciting projects and events that are currently being planned by the current and newly elected officers. I thank each of them for sharing their experiences, ideas and bringing such tremendous energy as they plan for the next season and beyond.

There is much to celebrate as we reflect on a wonderfully full year of programs and events related to SAAGO. We also look ahead as plans are being made for the coming 2016-2017 season. Everyone in our chapter, including spouses and partners are invited to St. David to experience the beauty and tranquility of the Holy Trinity Monastery, followed by a party at my home situated at the base of the Dragoon Mountain range, not far from the Monastery. This will take place on Saturday, May 21st. Lunch will be provided. Please bring along your favorite margarita recipe to share! Reservations are needed by our hospitality chairperson, Joyce Swinehart by Monday, May 16th. Details on this and travel arrangements can be found in this newsletter.

I look forward to seeing everyone on May 21st.!

Cheers!

Dennis

THANK YOU DENNIS AND ALL OFFICERS FOR OUTSTANDING LEADERSHIP

OF THIS CHAPTER DURING THE YEARS 2014-2016

AGO Member services

There are a variety of services and interesting information available on the national AGO website, among them a new interactive online column offered by Wilma Jensen. Dr. Jensen has been heralded as an outstanding recitalist, church musician and teacher. She performed at Christ Church Methodist, playing the Schlicker in 1981. As Professor of Organ at Indiana University, among other schools, she has helped shape a generation of outstanding organists. Aunt Wilma will answer user-submitted questions in her new online video column. Ask Aunt Wilma

Go to Aunt  Wilma’s  online  column  and submit your questions. Or simply read some of the questions already submitted and already answered. Some questions relate to technique; others to her views on past and current composers.

In Memoriam Theodore  W.  “Ted”  Conner  (1925-2016)

Ted Conner, husband of chapter member Kathryn Conner, passed way February 29, 2016. Ted and Kathryn were married in the Oberlin College Chapel in 1948; he graduated with a degree in music from Oberlin in 1950. Ted and Kathryn moved to Tucson in 1994 after living in Kokomo, Indiana, for 48 years. They were both active in the

music and arts community there. Kathryn became active in our AGO chapter after moving here in 1994. A memorial service is being planned for May 7, 2016, at Grace United Methodist Church in Kokomo. The family requests that in lieu of flowers, memorial contributions be made to Impact Food Bank of Southern Arizona, 3535 E. Hawser St., Tucson, AZ 85739. We express our deepest sympathy to Kathryn and family.

A few words about A. R. Schopps & Sons A few words about A. R. Schopps & Sons A few words about A. R. Schopps & Sons and an invitation from Grahame Davis for and an invitation from Grahame Davis for and an invitation from Grahame Davis for later in the summer. . .later in the summer. . .later in the summer. . . Regarding  Schopp’s,  the  founder  of  the  company—one August Schopps—emigrated from Germany in the late 19th century. He was a pipe maker and he worked for the Roosevelt Pipe Organ Company in New York. When the Roosevelt brothers died, that family closed down the organ factory in 1893 not wanting to be bothered with a low profit business like organ building! The Schopps moved to Alliance Ohio because in the early 20th century, there were several organ companies making pipe organs in that area. One such family was Schantz. Those two families have known and worked with each other for over 4 generations. The Schopps

family makes some of the finest reed ranks in the world as far as I am concerned. They are able to reproduce reed ranks from the grand era of American romantic organ building by making reeds in the Skinner style. They move effortlessly into the late 18th century English style, and our reeds for the organ we are rebuilding now are in this style. We've worked with the Schopps family for 30 years and have never been disappointed in anything they have made for us. Neither have our customers! We were there recently to pick up four sets of custom-made reed ranks for our latest project which is the rebuild and enhancement of a 1907 Whalley tracker organ owned by St. Mary's Episcopal Church in Phoenix. The church is a mission of the Diocese and our customer is the Bishop of the Diocese, Dr. Kirk Smith. Bishop Smith is personally interested in this project because he plays the pipe organ. We are lucky to have a Bishop who appreciates the finer points of pipe organ restoration. As we move into the summer, we plan to invite AGO members to tour the work and look over the organ as it is assembled and tested in our workshop here in Tucson.

Our chapter contributed $250 from the Roy Johnson Scholarship Fund towards the Palo Alto/Peninsula Chapter’s  POE  being  held  at  Stanford  University  August  7-13,2016.    POE’s  are  a  tangible  way  of  introducing  young  people to the pipe organ. Some current and very well known performers first touched the organ at a POE. The twenty enrolled students will receive daily private lessons and master classes on technique, repertoire, improvisation, and historical keyboards. They’ll  hear  recitals  by  prominent  organists,  tour  instruments in the San Francisco Bay Area, visit Schoenstein Organ Co. and play in a closing student recital at Memorial Church, Stanford University. The students’  tuition  covers only about 35% of the cost. All faculty, performers, and chaperones are donating their time and services.
