WELLBORN - Up until the time of Kelley Henderson Howard’s dis-appearance from a Riverside dentist office on June 2, the Henderson family had only typical troubles.

Kelley’s sister, Robin Bush, had weathered a divorce and survived major health problems. Kelley herself had gone through divorce but mar-ried her current husband, Boyd, about six years ago. Their father, Larry, and mother, Peggy, have supported their three daughters, Kelley, Robin and Traci Gardner, through the trials and tribulation of life.

Still, nothing could prepare them for June 2.

Kelley Henderson Howard, 41, was at Family Dentistry in Riverside, where she worked as a dental assis-tant. Around noon, she spoke with her mother on the phone and told her there was a knock at the door. Peggy expect-ed her daughter to call her back later, but never heard from her.

Kelley’s husband and family knew she had plans to spend the night with her best friend, who lives in the Oxford area, that night. When she never showed up, the best friend called Kelley’s son, Shaun Derusha of Mobile, the next morning. Robin said they immediately knew some-thing “wasn’t right” because her sister wouldn’t go anywhere without telling

her family and friends. So, after not being able to locate her, Boyd reported his wife missing on June 4. The last known contact was the phone conver-sation Kelley had with her mother in the day of her disappearance.

The Henderson family recognized life’s struggles, which even if all com-bined, shrink in comparison to the trauma they are experiencing because of Howard’s disappearance. Not only do they not have any informa-tion about what happened to her but Kelley’s son, Shaun, has a newborn son, Cohen Drake, who was born after her disappearance. The family says she was so close to her son and noth-ing excited Kelley more than to be a grandmother.

Recently, Robin and Peggy sat at the Hardees’s Restaurant in Wellborn to discuss their resolve that the family will learn where Kelly is, no matter what they have to do or how long they must wait. Even as other troubles arise, they won’t give up. On Monday night, Sept. 27, Robin’s house in Wellborn burned in a fire that gutted it. She sim-ply moved in with her parents and is glad her two teenagers were out of the house with friends. “I’ll be okay,” she said. “This house fire is only a tempo-rary setback. We will continue on until we find Kelly.”

Tears formed in both of their eyes as they discussed the pain of not knowing if their beloved Kelly is alive or dead.

“The emotion is terrible,” said Peggy. “I was sitting on the edge of the bed this morning. I looked down the hall-way and found myself waiting, as if Kelly might walk in.”

No matter how hard her mother wished, Kelly did not appear before her.

Kelly’s disappearance is a mys-tery to most everyone. Law enforce-ment officials say the investigation is continuing. Gov. Bob Riley issued a proclamation for a $5,000 reward for information on her disappearance and a family friend matched the amount, making the total $10,000. The Henderson family, along with Kelly’s husband and son, hope the money will prompt someone with information to come forth.

On Saturday, Sept. 25, about 80 peo-ple took part in a search party, orga-nized by Traci and family friend. The volunteers met at the Dollar General in Riverside, located beside Family Dentistry. “We do not know exactly why, but the search and rescue people from Walker County volunteered to conduct the search,” said Robin. “There was also a police car from Talladega County and Sylacauga there. We appreciate them and all the friends and family members who came.”

The search was cut short due to after-noon thunderstorms, but officials told the family they would come back. Also searching with the volunteers were

members of the Henderson family, including Peggy.

“We got out there with the beggar’s lice, the bees and the ants,” she said. She smiled and then her eyes drifted outside the window as she thought about what they might have found. Her face reddened.

Robin’s head dropped downward. “Some people said they couldn’t do what we did,” she said, “but we felt we had to.”

In addition to searching and hop-ing, the family has paid to have flyers printed, met with television crews and reporters, and placed the flyers into stores and other public places. They are especially appreciative of the truck drivers who have helped them carry flyers throughout the United States.

“Some of them get tears in their eyes when we ask them to help us,” said Robin. “So many truck drivers have told us they have seen Kelly’s picture on flyers in faraway places. We know people out there are helping us, and it means a lot.”

In addition to their efforts, the fam-ily members are trying hard to control their emotions. They rely on each other and on their faith in God.

“Sometimes I get angry,” said Robin. “I call mother and let it out. Mom lis-

tens. She hears me stomp and holler.” Peggy said she can listen and provide

comfort. She said she can barely toler-ate the emptiness and expectation she carries in her heart.

“I have to accept that there is no good way to describe this much emotional pain,” she said, as she wiped more tears away. “I just do not want anyone else to ever feel this pain.”

The Henderson family is doing one other thing they consider of utmost

importance. They are saving all of the papers and articles about Kelly’s disap-pearance. If she returns, they want to be able to show her how much she was loved. And, if she never physically sees the papers, the family wants to be able to show Kelly’s grandson how much she was loved.
