History in the MakingThe Mix is primed to rise again in a story that mirrors that of Northridge itself. Resilient. Reimagined. Ready.

In the early 1950s, The Mix, quite like the apple trees that once filled the site, thrived. It began as an RCA owned defense contracting plant, comprised of four mid-century style buildings, a radar tower and an anechoic chamber. By the mid-70s Harman, International Industries, whose brands include the iconic Harman Kardon and JBL Speakers lines, purchased and renovated the site, adding to it an AC Martin & Associates designed 420,000 sf building - one of the largest single-story buildings built in San Fernando Valley at the time. Later, this became Harman’s World Headquarters and speaker manufacturing plant. Ever improving upon itself, Harman sold the property to a national developer and the site continued to soar, with additional dynamic features, and the unification of the site under one “brand” with repeating motifs, colors and patterns throughout, earning the prestigious Los Angeles Beautification Award in 1989. After the Northridge Earthquake in 1994, the buildings were retrofitted and continued to garner numerous accolades. Today the campus is primed to rise again, in a story that quite mirrors that of Northridge itself. Resilient. Reimagined. Ready.

Nestled in San Fernando Valley and circled by the gorgeous mountains of the Tranverse Ranges, Northridge is a dynamic and bustling neighborhood located in the heart of the Valley, convenient to Calabasas, Simi Valley and Porter Ranch. With its brightly-lit, bistros, mixed-use lofts, boutique hotels and world class dining, Northridge not only welcomes and charms, but it is steeped in entertainment history. In the late 1960s, Devonshire Downs was the site of two major rock music festivals featuring the Doors, Jefferson Airplane and Jimmy Hendrix and many other top acts. The second festival was briefly the largest music festival ever held before losing that distinction to Woodstock the following year. Now San Fernando Valley is home to entertainment industry giants such as Disney, Warner Brothers, NBC Universal, Sony, Nickelodeon, Telemundo, ESPN and CBS among others, spawning a dynamic creative enclave that continues to buzz with energy.

DemographicsThere are 507,255 personal residences, with an average household income of $82,259 within a 10 mile radius of The Mix. Included in these areas are the executive housing areas of Porter Ranch, (Northridge Farms), Encino, Sherman Oaks, Tarzana, Woodland Hills, Calabasas, Burbank, Studio City, Bel Air, Hollywood Hills, West Los Angeles, and Santa Monica.

Additionally, the project is located at the center of one of the most prolific and educated labor sources in the country, with 613,995 employees also located within the 10 mile radius of the campus. Of the population age 25 and over of these are highly educated with 80% obtaining a high school degree, 32% with a Bachelor’s degree, and 10% with a graduate degree. The campus is located within minutes from Cal State University, Northridge, and is a fertile recruiting ground from such educational institutions as USC, UCLA, Pepperdine University, Cal State LA, Cal Tech, LA and LA Pierce College. Numerous trade and technical colleges and schools are also located within the immediate area including DeVry University, Phillips College, ITT Technical Institute, Columbia College of Hollywood, New York Film Academy, UEI, Kaplan College, Concorde Career College, The Art Institute of California, Platt College, and West Coast University.
