Dear Editor,After reading the editors commentsregarding smiling, i was reminded of this poem. Author unknown.

SMILING IS INFECTIOUS YOUCATCH IT LIKE THE FLU,WHEN SOMEONE SMILED AT METODAY,I STARTED SMILING TOO. I PASSED AROUND A CORNER ANDSOMEONE SAW ME GRIN,WHEN HE SMILED I REALISED I’DPASSED IT ON TO HIM. I THOUGHT ABOUT THE SMILEAND REALISED IT’S WORTH,A SINGLE SMILE LIKE MINE,COULD TRAVEL AROUND THE EARTH. IF YOU FEEL A SMILE BEGIN.DON’T LEAVE IT UNDETECTED,LET’S START AN EPIDEMICAND GET THE WORLD INFECTED. MICHAEL

Dear Editor,At the recent Coronation Hall Committee meeting members expressed their appreciation for the late Clive Braithwaite. Clive was caretaker of the hall for seventeen years and also the voluntary booking clerk. He was regular called at the monthly bingo and in this regard there will be a special raffl e at the next session in aid of Help for Heroes, his family's chosen charity, in his memory. A commemorative plaque will also be placed outside the hall where he loved to sit. He will be greatly missed.Pam

Fancy a giggle.................

When I was in the pub I heard a couple of plonkas saying that they wouldn’t feel safe on an aircraft if they knew the pilot was a woman. What a pair of sexists. I mean , it’s not as if she’d have to reverse the bloody thing!

Warm it has been but oh so wet. I for one am ready for cooler but dry.I think most bonfi re parties went off well between the what has seemed like perpetual rain showers, those who went to Walcott saw a truly stupendous display as captured by Paul Damen’s talented camera work, had I been holding the camera all we would have had was the back of spectators heads! We all have talents some obvious as seen in the numerous local galleries and seasonal spectaculars as at Thorpe Market church this coming Sat and Sunday 14/15 Nov and on the stage as on page 13 others yet to be discovered! What ever you and your family compete in, create at a craft class or generally enjoy send me a short note/email that we as Crab Tale readers can enjoy the experience with you or marvel at the result.

Dear Editor,I’m afraid I have to take my friend Micky Peters to task re his language in a letter published in issue 073 of Crab Tales.Micky admits he has an ‘eloquent’ choice of questionable bad language.Words which might cause a smile when spoken do not look good when written down.Surprising as it may seem youngsters like to look through Crab Tales and we should all be setting them an example. There is no need for bad language in what is otherwise an excellent little magazine.Regards.Janet Munro.

Dear Editor,I wonder how many folk have viewed the new conceptual art installation by local sculptor Anthony Gormless at Cromer bus station depicting nine members of the Cromertariat waiting for a number 44? It is called “When will that bl**dy bus get here?”. Joking apart, I do wish they would get a move on putting up the new bus Shelters.Yours,Philip Graham.

Dear Liz,Aldborough Variety Show was a great success, it raised nearly £500 for the community centre. The local talent was very well received, especially the young ballet dancers and the young piano player. The hall was packed out and a great evening was had by all.Thank you to all who produced and supported this super evening.Kind regards,Pat Freeman Dear Liz,I’ve no idea if this is of any interest to you (or anybody else for that matter) but at the beginning of September I was contacted by Fischer Verlag, a large Frankfurt based publishing conglomerate, who were interested in bringing out three of my thrillers as ebooks in German. Since then my silver tongue and evident need have upped the ante slightly. Contracts have been signed for six ebooks to be published over the next 18 months. The same titles are also being reprinted as paperbacks. Although this is obviously great news for me, I appreciate it might not be quite so exciting for your readers but I thought I’d let you know anyway. All the bestRitchieP.SThe books involved are THE FALL GUY, NOWHERE MAN, YOUR MONEY AND YOUR WIFE, HOLIDAY WITH A VENGEANCE, ONE GOOD DEATH DESERVES ANOTHER and DEAD END. Richie Perry.

A little Yorkshire humour......Following the death of his wife, an old boy from Yorkshire was discussing the notice for the newspaper.........

The couple had been happily married for 50 years. When informed of the cost, the man uttered, in true Yorkshire fashion, “How Much?”

He reluctantly produced his wallet. “I want summat simple he explained,

“My Gladys was a good-hearted and hard-working Yorkshire lass but she wunt ‘ave wanted owt swanky’.

“Perhaps a small poem,” suggested the woman at the desk.

‘Nay,’ he said, ‘she wunt ‘ave wanted anything la-di-da. Just put; ‘Gladys Braithwaite’s died”.

“You need to say when,’ he was told by the receptionist.

‘Do I? Well, put died 17th March 2015. That’ll do.’

‘It is usual for the bereaved to add some meaningful phrase about the dearly departed.’

The man considered for a moment. ‘Well, put in, ‘Sadly missed.’ That’ll do,’ he said.

‘You can have another four words,’ the woman explained.

‘No, no!’ he cried, ‘she wouldn’t ‘ave wanted me to splash out.’

“The words are included in the price,’ the woman informed him.

‘Are they? You mean I’ve paid for ‘em

‘Yes, indeed.’

‘Well, if I’ve paid for ‘em exclaimed the man, ‘I’m ‘avin’ ‘em.’

The obituary was duly printed:

Gladys Braithwaite. Died 17th March 2015. Sadly missed. Also Tractor for sale.

Residential Landlord and Tenant IssuesChanges to terminating an Assured Shorthold Tenancy by service of a Section 21 notice

Written by Amanda Nudds – Solicitor with Hayes + Storr

The Deregulation Act 2015 was passed in March this year covering various issues relating to residential landlords and tenants. From 1 October 2015, provisions will come into force protecting tenants from eviction which can have serious consequences for landlords.

A ‘Section 21’ notice is required to be served on a tenant where a landlord wishes to bring the tenancy to an end. A landlord’s ability to terminate a tenancy this way will be restricted where a tenant has complained about the condition of the property or its common parts and where the landlord either failed to respond within 14 days, has not provided an adequate response or has responded by serving a Section 21notice.

If landlords fail to adequately respond the tenant will have the opportunity to complain to the Local Housing Authority. Not only is this likely to result in enforcement notices being served on the landlord by the local authority, but it will also prevent the landlord from serving a Section 21 notice within 6 months of the date of service of the enforcement notice. Of course, the provisions will not apply where the condition of the property or common parts is as a result of the tenant’s breach.

Landlords should be aware that although the new provisions require the tenant’s complaint to be in writing, they will still be taken into consideration where the tenant did not have the landlord’s contact details but made reasonable eff ort to contact the landlord. It follows that landlords should ensure that tenants have up to date information on how to contact them.

These provisions will apply to any assured shorthold tenancy granted on or after 1 October 2015.

There are other new provisions relating to the way tenancy deposits are managed and changes to the content of Section 21 notices. If you wish to discuss these new provisions in more detail or discuss your own landlord/tenant issues please contactAmanda on 01328 825959. For advice on any other legal matter please telephone our Sheringham offi ce on 01263 825959or email [email protected].

Call Dave on 01263 722 517DON’T ASK FOR WHOM THE BELL TOLLS IT TOLLS FOR THEE............. AND A VERY INTERESTING CROMER BELL RINGING FACT.....................Once again Mundesley Coronation Hall was buzzing with members of the Royal British Legion Women’s Section (Mundesley & District) branch for their monthly meeting. As well as making preparations for the forthcoming Remembrance Day services in the local churches, a branch trip to a garden centre (with afternoon tea, of course), and the more formal matter of the upcoming RBLWS County Conference, there was the happy celebration of two birthdays. In recognition of her 90th, long serving member Betty Willsmore was presented with a poppy brooch by Chair Jenny Lambert and “Happy Birthday” was sung to Maureen Spink.

Before tea and biscuits were served, Mundesley resident Betty Taylor gave a jovial presentation about her love of bell ringing. Whilst Betty first became interested in bell ringing at the age of 12 (primarily to pursue a young lad) it was not until her much later years that campanology became a real passion; one she has passed on to her grand daughter, Chloe Guthrie, who recently won the prestigious Dorothy L. Sayers Bell Ringer’s award. Together they tour the many local church towers ringing peals for celebrations, commemorations and calls to worship. She imparted a little known fact that Cromer Parish Church with St Martin’s is one of the few churches to still toll its bell to mark the death of a resident – 9 chimes for a man, 3 for a lady or child followed by a pause and then one for every year lived. The talk concluded with a practical hand bell demonstration where branch members, under the direction of Mrs Taylor conducting with wooden spoon, chimed hymns and tunes including “Daisy, Daisy, Give me your answer, do”. It was hard to tell which was more comical, our members playing or Betty’s charming talk. The branch welcomes new members to join our practical, social and fundraising activities. Please contact Branch Secretary , Denise Tarry 01263 722163.

A Titter.......................

While walking along the sidewalk in front of his church, our minister heard the intoning of a prayer that nearly made his collar wilt. Apparently, his 5-year-old son and his playmates had found a dead robin. Feeling that proper burial should be performed, they had secured a small box and cotton batting, then dug a hole and made ready for the disposal of the deceased. The minister’s son was chosen to say the appropriate prayers and with sonorous dignity intoned his version of what he thought his father always said: ‘Glory be unto the Faaather, and unto the Sonnn, and into the hole he goooes.’

Or....Access to high-speed broadband doubles in Norfolk as first Better Broadband contract

completes ahead of schedule and under budget.

Norfolk County Council’s partnership with BT has given 185,885 mainly rural homes and businesses access to fibre-enabled

broadband, ahead of schedule and under budget.

Originally due to finish this December, it was announced today (Friday, 30 October) that the first Better Broadband for Norfolk

(BBfN) programme contract completed three months early, reached more properties than anticipated and made significant

savings.

More than 80 per cent of households and businesses in the county can now buy a superfast broadband service (24 Megabits per

second and above), nearly double the number who could receive these speeds three years ago before the BBfN programme got

underway.

The money saved as part of the first contract will now be reinvested in the next phase of the BBfN programme, which is

due to bring faster broadband speeds to even more remote parts of the county. Planning work is already underway and the first

services are due to be available from December 2015.

For the many in North Norfolk who have had to plod along with snail pace internet the wait may soon be over, if it isn’t

already. Soon we should almost all have the choice of High Speed Broadband. If you don’t know your broadband speed there are

free tests online. Superfast is 24 Megabytes or more so if your speed is well below that why not ask your provider why. It will be

interesting to see how well BT resolves the patches of very low speed to give us all a level playing field so we can all rejoice at the

end of watching that little circle going round. I always thought that was the best bit!

BT staff say a fond fairwell to the plucky heroes who carried our internet messages.

North Norfolk’s Got Talent

Thursday 22nd October saw the final of North Norfolk’s Got Talent at The Pavilion Theatre in Cromer. Ten acts had made

it through to the final including one dance group, a comedian and a variety of singing acts.

The evening showed the wealth of talent that North Norfolk has to offer. The competition was won by singing duet Gelo who

performed Bring Him Home from Les Misérables and Let it Go from Frozen. Second place went to singer Jack Goodacre accompanied by his dad Tim Goodacre and Perry McCabe. Third place was won by Olivia Watson, accompanied by Rob

Bindley on acoustic guitar. The evening was enjoyed by all and proved to be hugely successful. The competition was organised

by the Coast Arts Festival with the Cromer Pier Pavilion

Theatre, Arts North Norfolk and Art is Medicine.

NORFOLK’S YOUNG PEOPLE MAKE THEIR MARK...

Young people in Norfolk want to be paid the living wage and taught about personal fi nance and relationships in their schools according to the results of a referendum in which almost 17,000 of the county’s 11 to 18 year olds took part.Norfolk’s young people voiced their opinions through the Make Your Mark Ballot, an initiative run nationally by UK Youth Parliament. Voters were polled in Norfolk high schools and asked to select the single issue, of ten available, which was of paramount importance to them. The top fi ve concerns nationwide will be debated by the elected Members of Youth Parliament from across the UK in the House of Commons on 13 November. Four members of Norfolk’s Youth Parliament, which is supported by Norfolk County Council, will join the debate to make sure the voice of Norfolk’s young people is heard. The meeting will be chaired by John Bercow MP, the Speaker of the House, and its outcome will determine which issue will be the UK Youth Parliament’s campaign priority in the coming year.

When votes were counted, Norfolk’s top fi ve priorities mirrored the national top fi ve results. The Living Wage topped the poll both locally and nationally, with 3,016 of the 16,711 Norfolk young people that took part registering the belief that “everyone aged 16 or over should be paid at least the Living Wage of £7.85 per hour”. In second place, voters selected “a curriculum to prepare us for life”, which proposes that schools cover real-world topics like fi nance, relationships, and politics. Mental health, transport, and combating discrimination came in third, fourth, and fi fth, respectively. This year’s Make Your Mark ballot set a record for being the biggest youth voting exercise in UK history, with 1 in 5 people aged 11 to 18 taking part. James Joyce, Chairman of the County Council’s Children’s Services Committee, said: “Our young people perform a vital role in our democratic process. They not only speak up for their peers and their communities, but the county as a whole. The Make Your Mark ballot is a great opportunity for them to let us know what pressing issues aff ect young people in Norfolk, and for us to really listen to what they have to say. “This year’s tremendous voter turnout is quite an achievement for Norfolk’s young people. Congratulations to our MYPs and the thousands of their peers who took the time and trouble to vote.”

Annie Baldwin, 18, MYP for Broadland said: “Make Your Mark is brilliant and it allows young people to have a voice. It’s the biggest youth consultation in the UK and shows what young people want all across Britain. We can’t wait to start tackling these issues in Norfolk. Young people are the future so it’s important that their opinions and ideas are not ignored.”
