6th Grade GOLD TEAM

A big winter greeting from your Gold 6th team! We have been jumping right in to our learning and are exploring concepts that are interesting and informative. Unfortunately, a combination of illnesses has been rough on all of us since returning from holiday break. As we are very busy in our days, its super important that students be here as much as they can, and when they can’t, it’s imperative that they get caught up quickly. We understand that it’s a lot of work, but students are only given one day for each absence to complete the work missed. This is one reason Social Studies and Science offers websites, so parents or students can check each day for the missing work and hopefully get caught up before turning, or quickly after. It is the student’s responsibility to see the teacher to get their missing assignments or come in for tutoring if needed. Every teacher is available for tutoring at least two days a week, if not more. Please know that we are here to help your student be as successful as they can.

.

6th Grade RED TEAM

In math we will begin exploring 3D shapes including creating nets and calculating surface area and volume. Towards the end of the month we will begin to look at statistical questions. In Advanced Math students will be learning about probability and in Pre-Algebra we will continue solving systems of equations and end the month with the Pythagorean Theorem. Please note our third Galileo Benchmark testing will begin the week of February 27th. Social Studies classes are currently studying Ancient Greece and learning the difference between a democracy and aristocracy. Students will soon be comparing and contrasting, two Greek city-states, Sparta and Athens, and write a short essay on which they would prefer to live in. In Language Arts we are learning about text structure and its features, functional text, narrative writing, and reviewing argumentative writing. Language Arts will not have an essay for this quarter. For homework this quarter students must: 1) number their paragraphs 2) annotate 3) cite textual evidence using the following sentence "In paragraph _____ the author states _____________... " in order for it to be considered a completed packet (unless told otherwise). Grading for these packets is as follows: Annotation - 20 points (5 points per day) Citing textual evidence - 1 point per question (for a total of 20 points) Actually answering the question (doesn't have to be the correct answer) - 1 point per question (for a total of 20 points) Making homework packets worth 60 points in all.

Science Fair is scheduled for March 9th from 4pm to 6pm.

Can't wait to see you there!!

N 7th Grade RED TEAM & 7th Grade GOLD TEAM

Hello Parents and 7th grade students,

Please remember to share the love with your parents by explaining what you are learning in your classes and what activities are happening. They may have forgotten what they learned in 7th grade and need your help recalling it! Both Math and Language Arts will be continuing toward completing standards as we head toward those state tests. Keep a look out for writing assignments in language arts which delve into the mechanics and styles for writing essential for use in other content areas as well. These may include comparing authors points of view on the same topic. Math will be exploring probability and predictions, as well as Algebra exploring data plots and the best methods for illustrating data. In social studies, we will be furthering our endeavors on the Civil War and Reconstruction periods. Keep your eyes peeled for some fun and exciting projects which relate to this period. In science, we rock on with our study of Earth by exploring earthquakes, minerals, ad rocks. Science Fair projects should be moving along. Parents, we ask that you check planners for homework and ask to see returned work so students can share their successes with you. The more they can explain what they have learned with you, the more they can make real world connections and retain it!! Remember to check web sites for assignments and help as well as check out remind.com if you would like notifications sent to you about upcoming assignment due dates and tests. Thank you for the support. Math: Mr. Mellen and Mr. McGee Social Studies: Mr. Nelson and Mr. Grzywa Language Arts: Ms. Knable and Mrs. Kurle Science: Ms. Sandusky and Mrs. Saavedra

8th Grade Team In Geometry, students will be solving equations for circles, pyramids, cones, and spheres. Pre-algebra students will be learning about and using the Pythagorean Theorem. At the beginning of the month, algebra students will construct linear, quadratic, piecewise, step, absolute value and exponential functions over integer domains given certain function characteristics or given values greater than or lesser than a given function. They will conclude with determining and justifying the most appropriate type of data plot for a set of data as well as plotting multiple data sets. Social Studies classes are wrapping up the WWII unit. That unit will conclude with their final project, which is an ABC Book of WWII. Then students will be diving into the age of Rock and Roll, Cars, and Civil Rights, better known as the 1950s! In Language Arts classes, students are focusing on argumentative writing. Students are examining author's point of view and how they respond to conflicting evidence. Students will wrap up the quarter with analyzing literature and looking at figurative language. In Mrs. Jimenez’s class, students have a book project due February 27, 2017. Mrs. Bennett’s “Book Talks” are due March 7th! In Science, we will begin our in depth examination of Newton’s Laws and a close look at the different types of forces. Be prepared to go outside for our hands on, exploratory look at Newton’s Second law. It will be cold! Science Fair projects, in advanced science classes only, are due February 27th . Students should be well into running their tests and collecting their data by the beginning of February.

As this year continues to pass by very quickly, Spanish students are learning the many new, exciting aspects of the language. 6th graders will be learning about the birthplace of the Spanish language and how the language traveled to the Americas. In addition, they will be learning about the various traditions that are practiced in most Spanish-speaking countries. These traditions include everything from the famous running of the bulls in Pamplona to the Day of the Dead in Central America. 7th graders will learn functional vocabulary over the next few weeks. This vocabulary includes the alphabet, numbers, days of the week, months of the year, and basic greetings in Spanish. The Spanish I class will continue to work on improving their grammar, writing, and reading skills. Over the next month, we will work on “shoe verbs” in the present tense and how to use them in sentences. Short readings and comprehension questions will also be utilized in order to build comprehension and writing skills.

I can be reached at [email protected] if there are any questions

regarding Spanish classes.

Happy New Year Anza Families! This quarter I have a new group of students taking Character & Leadership. We began the quarter with learning what "Character" is and its importance. The last two weeks students have spend time getting to know each other to support their comfort level and their ability to work as a cohesive class. All classes thus far have learned how Random Acts of Kindness build Character & Leadership. Lastly, all students are required to practice "Self-Advocacy" by learning how to take ownership of their education in order to complete this quarter successfully. Students will be sharing a "Snap Shot" of their current academic & behavior progress with you and will soon be facilitating a brief student-lead meeting with teachers who they believe they need to check-in with in support of student achievement. Please contact me if you would like to learn more about our Character & Leadership elective class. Mrs. Ornelas- [email protected] ext. 1790.

Anza Trail School is excited to celebrate Love of Reading Week from February 13th through February 17th. Our theme this year is the Disney-based “Anza Trail’s Wonderful World of Reading.” Please see the flyer in this newsletter for information about our Out of Dress Code Spirit Week--we’ll be showing our spirit by dressing fun all week!

We’ll kick off our Love of Reading week with an opening assembly including guest speakers and a lively dance performance by the Walden Grove High School Dance Team at 8:00am in the Courtyard on Monday, February 13th.

A favorite part of Love of Reading week is welcoming members from our community to campus to read to our students. Guest readers will be here throughout the week sharing their favorite books with classrooms across campus. There’s still time to sign up to be a guest reader--contact [email protected] for more information.

An Anza Trail favorite, our annual Read-In, will occur on Friday, February 17th across campus. Cozy jammies, good books, and lots of fun will be had by all. Please speak with your child’s teacher for more information on how their class will be participating. We’ll continue our celebration of reading at our next Literacy Night on Wednesday, February 15th from 4:00pm until 6:00pm in the Library, Cafeteria, and Courtyard. Safety is our #1 concern for all our students and those who are

delivering and picking them up, as well. Please remember that

we are a NO-PHONE-ZONE while you are driving on school

grounds. Also, continue to use the properly, identified

crosswalks for access to the campus. Once on campus all bike

riders, scooter riders, or any other mode of transportation MUST

BE WALKED to the designated bike racks or parking areas.

This is a friendly reminder of the drop-off locations for Anza Trail School…

Please note that all the sections highlighted in RED are areas where student drop-offs

are PROHIBITED. Please use, ONLY, the areas highlighted in YELLOW for SAFE,

SUPERVISED drop-offs of your students.

It is also important to note that school supervision is from 7am-2:30pm each day.

There is NO ON-DUTY STAFF present at the 3-5 playground after 2:30pm on regularly

scheduled days.

We thank you for your cooperation and understanding.
