Father William, the old priest, made it a practice to visit the parish school oneday a week. He walked into the 4th grade class,
where the children were studyingthe states, and asked them how many states they
could name. They came up withabout 40 names. Father William jokingly
told them that in his day studentsknew the names of all the states.
One lad raised his hand and said, ‘Yes sir, but inthose days there were only 13 states.’

The Fourth of July weekend was approaching, and Miss Pelham, the nursery school teacher,
took the opportunity to tell her classabout patriotism. ‘We live in a great country,’
she announced. ‘One of the things we should behappy is that, in this country, we are all free.’
Andy, who was a little boy in her class, came walking up to her from the back of the room.
He stood with his hands on his hips and saidloudly, ‘I’m not free. I’m four.’

Nicholas took his four-year-old son, Andy,to several baseball games where
“The Star-Spangled Banner” was sung before thestart of each game. Later, Nicholas and Andy
attended St Bartholomew’s church on the Sundaybefore Independence Day.
The congregation sang The Star-Spangled Banner, and after everyone sat down, Andy suddenly yelled
out at the top of his voice, ‘Play ball.’

Mrs Whyte, a teacher advisesthe class that each school day
starts with the “Pledge ofAllegiance” and instructs
them to put their right handover their heart and repeat
after her.As Mrs Whyte starts the recitation she looksaround the room, ‘I pledge allegiance to the
flag........’, when her eyes are drawn to Andy whohas his hand over the right cheek of his bottom.‘Andy, I cannot continue till you put your hand
over your heart,’ she demands.Andy looks up and replies, ‘It is over my heart.’
After several more attempts to get Andy to put hishand over his heart, Mrs Whyte enquires,
‘Why do you think that is your heart, Andy?’‘Well Miss,’ answers Andy, ‘because every time
my Grandma comes to visit she pats me thereand says, “Bless your little heart,”
and my Grandma never lies.’

Coweta County is a wonderful place to live,
work, and enjoy life; and I feel fortunate to be a
part of it. Our community has grown in the past
years creating both challenges and opportunities.
We finally have the goods and services available,
right here, to support our lifestyles without having
to go out of town to spend our money.
Owning The Coweta Shopper has given me the opportunity to get to know some
of the people who provide those goods and services here and to learn what it takes to
keep Coweta County economically healthy. One of the most important things we can
do, I believe, is to buy locally, investing in our community to keep it strong.
Go with me now on two theoretical journeys following the money we spend. The
first trip starts when a merchant runs an ad in The Coweta Shopper offering tires at a
good value. A reader sees the ad and buys the tires, resulting in a profit for the busi-
ness. The tire shop pays its employee who then spends his money at a clothing store
for a new suit. The clothing store uses some of its profits to build a much needed new
addition. The building contractor buys a new truck at a
local dealership who pays sales and inventory taxes to
the city and county. The county pays a salary to the
sheriff, who not only keeps Coweta a safe place to live,
but was perhaps the person who saw the Shopper ad
and bought the tires. The money continues to circu-
late, creating jobs and opportunities throughout our
community.
In the second hypothetical money journey, a per-
son needing tires sees an ad on the Internet offering a discount from a store in Texas.
He perceives it as being a good value (until a warranty claim is needed!) and has the
tires shipped to his home in Coweta County. That money is gone, never to return!
The cycle has ended as far as the economic health of our community is concerned.
The above examples are, of course, simplistic and there are many other things
which must be done to make Coweta County a great place to live. They do, however,
make a good case for “buying locally” for the good of the entire community. You may
have heard the old saying “money talks”. Lets not allow ours to say “good bye”.
As always, I invite your comments and suggestions to help us make the Coweta
Shopper an interesting and effective advertising medium.
You’ll be seeing a lot more of us now!

TO YOUR GOOD HEALTH
By Paul G. Donohue, M.D.
Most Don’t Have Second Heart Attack
DEAR DR. DONOHUE: About six years ago, I had aheart attack. The doctor said there was hardly anydamage. Is it likely that I will have another heartattack? I am overweight and have a hard time losingweight and keeping it off. — C.P.
ANSWER: The chance of a recurrent heart attack formen is 21 percent; for women, 33 percent. Looked at inthe opposite way, the chances for not having a secondheart attack are very good. Figures like these aredeceptive when applied to an individual. A person’sefforts to decrease the risks of having another attackare the keys to not having one.
Those risks include dealing with obesity. Even thoughweight loss is difficult for you, you must make an effortto reduce your weight. A dietitian can help you withthe diet part. You have to increase your physical activ-ity. Inactivity is an invitation to artery clogging andheart attacks. Ask your doctor what kind of exercise issafe for you. Walking is permitted for most, and walk-ing is a way to strengthen your heart, clear your arter-ies and lose weight.
You also have to watch your cholesterol in all its forms.HDL cholesterol keeps heart arteries free of plaquebuildup, and LDL cholesterol encourages it. You haveto keep an eye on your blood pressure, another ingre-dient for heart attacks.
The fact that your doctor said little damage was doneto your heart puts you into a class of heart-attackpatients who are at low risk for having another. The booklet on heart attacks discusses all aspects ofthis common problem that takes so many lives. Read-ers can obtain a copy by writing: Dr. Donohue — No.102W, Box 536475, Orlando, FL 32853-6475. Enclose acheck or money order (no cash) for $4.75 U.S./$6 Cana-da with the recipient’s printed name and address. Please allow four weeks for delivery.

DEAR DR. DONOHUE: I am 23, just graduated fromcollege and have my first full-time job. In high school,I ran track, both distance and sprints. I am trying toget myself back into condition. I can still run distancespretty well, but I can’t sprint. My legs hurt after a veryshort time. Why? Can I overcome it? — P.M.
ANSWER: Pain from sprinting comes from thebuildup of lactic acid, a byproduct of anaerobic exer-cise, exercise done without the benefit of oxygen. Ifyou haven’t been sprinting for four years, you can’texpect your body to do what it could back then. It takestime for it to gear up to lactic acid. You can overcome itby continuing to practice sprinting at a reduced pace.
***
DEAR DR. DONOHUE: I have been taking aceta-minophen for pain, as well as an aspirin every day. Is itsafe to use both together? — H.B.
ANSWER: It’s safe if you’re not exceeding the recom-mended doses of each. In fact, tablets are availablewith the combination of acetaminophen and aspirin.Excedrin is one such tablet.
Have you found out the cause of your pain? Do so.Don’t just mask it with medicines.

Dr. Donohue regrets that he is unable to answer indi-vidual letters, but he will incorporate them in his col-umn whenever possible. Readers may write him orrequest an order form of available health newslettersat P.O. Box 536475, Orlando, FL 32853-6475.

Q: I have a RCA Victor console AM/FM radio-recordplayer that features stereophonic settings. What doyou think it is worth? — Phyllis, Magnolia Springs,Ala.
A: Although you didn’t include a model number or anyother information that would help me determine itsapproximate age, I assume your machine is from the1960s. I have seen sets similar to the one that you havesell at yard sales in the$25 to $75 range. As withmost collectibles, thereare always exceptions tothe rule, but this shouldgive you a rough idea ofits value.

“Ben Franklin”child’s rocker
Q: I have a “BenFranklin” child’s rockerthat has been in my fami-ly for a number of years. Can you tell me when itwas made and when? —Leona, Dubuque, Iowa
A: The short answer is no,I can’t. With the scantinformation you sent me,I have no clues or otherimportant information. For example, is the rock-er handmade or was itmanufactured by a com-pany? More to the point, how is it constructed? Isit put together with wood-en pegs, glue or nails? What kind of wood wasused and have you shownit to dealers in your areato see what they think?
These are the things thatprovide a little informa-tion to work from, buteven when I am providedwith those facts, the bestsuggestion is to consultwith an expert. I recom-mend you begin myshowing the rocker to atleast five or six dealers inyour city. If that fails toprovide the answers youneed, the time has thencome to break out thecheckbook and hire theservices of a certifiedappraiser.

Meet Truett Cathy
have a solid foundation on which to build experience.About two thirds of all store operators have come upfrom the ranks.
Mr. Cathy quoted one of his favorite Bible verses atour Kiwanis meeting: Proverbs 22:1. A good name israther to be chosen than great riches, and loving favorthan silver and gold. He believes in leading by examplebut he doesn't see Chick-Fil-A as a platform for his faith- rather he applies faith principles to his business. Youwon't find any of his restaurants open on Sunday, andhe is sometimes criticized for that. "We close on Sun-day because we think it's the right thing to do".
Perhaps he has been a very lucky man to have beenso successful. He agrees, then clarifies his answer. "Ifyou examine luck, you will usually find that the peoplewho have been lucky have also worked hard, understoodthe value of a dollar and taken advantage of unexpectedopportunities".
So, as you meet Truett Cathy through this article, meet a man who believes in hard work, treating othersas he would want to be treated and honors God throughhis business and personal life. Quite a man!
By the way, I want to be just like Mr. Cathy when Igrow up!
Almost everyone knows the Chick-Fil-A name andsome can associate Truett Cathy as founder of the com-pany. Yet only a few have had the opportunity to meetMr. Cathy and hear his philosophy of what it takes to besuccessful in the restaurant business and in the busi-ness of life. I got just that opportunity last week whenhe visited the Newnan Kiwanis Club as a guest of hisfriend and business associate, Mitchell Hix, ofUniGlobe Travel.
He granted me a few minutes of his time for this arti-cle and suggested that I refer to his latest book, HowDid You Do It, Truett? published by Looking GlassPress, Inc. in 2007.
Since starting his first restaurant in 1946, TruettCathy knew he had to treat his customers the way hewould want to be treated, and serve good food. Thisphilosophy still holds true today in the success of hismore than 1400 locations throughout the country. "Ourcustomers expect delicious food, delivered quickly andaccurately, in a clean environment. To that, we add cour-tesy and kindness", says Mr. Cathy.
When it comes to hiring good people he feels thesame way. "The kinder you are to your people, the moreproductive they will be". Chick-Fil-A tries hard to hirepeople of good character over experience. They then
We all know that the scorecard of any busi-ness is the profit it produces. Without profit, wecannot take care of our employees, our families,or contribute to the betterment of our communi-ties. The question is: How do we balance thepursuit of profit and personal character? For me, I find that balance by applying Biblicalprinciples. I see no conflict between Biblical prin-ciples and good business practice.

Robby Gordon Builds Momentum
SONOMA, Calif. — Jimmie Johnson got a long-await-ed road-course victory, but winning couldn’t havemeant as much to Johnson as second place did toRobby Gordon.
As owner of his team, Gordon has struggled. His No. 7Monster Energy Toyota failed to make the field atPocono. Prior to the runner-up finish, Gordon’s bestshowing of the season had been a 14th at Phoenix. Hehas only three finishes in the top 20.
“My team needs a little bit of morale here and there,”said Gordon. “This will boost morale back at theworkshop. I will say that we will come to WatkinsGlen guns blazing. We’ll get a lot of confidence goinginto the Glen and spend a bunch of time getting morerear grip. At the end of the day, that’s what we strug-gled on with Jimmie (Johnson).”
What a runner-up finish at Infineon Raceway did forGordon is solidify his position in the Sprint Cup point
standings, meaning that he will have a guaranteedspot in the next race and, quite probably, several moreafter that.
“On a weekly basis, let’s face it right now, we’re(32nd) in points,” he observed. “It’s hard to buildmorale. ... I think this will build us some momentum.I’m not going to say it’s going to push our guys,
because the guys have to get on board.
“I believe they’ll have confidence going to WatkinsGlen (the other road course, on Aug. 8) that we can
actually win that race, so we can build some momen-tum throughout the summer, and hopefully have somegood runs.
Gordon, from Orange, Calif., has been a winner inNASCAR, off-road racing and Indy cars. At age 41, hecontinues to compete in major off-road races. He hasthree Sprint Cup victories to his credit, the mostrecent occurring on Aug. 10, 2003, at Watkins Glen.
“This is a tough sport,” he said. “I don’t know how tosay it. Cup racing, when you’re racing against theseteams out here, you’re racing against the best teamsin America.
“Obviously, Cup racing is where it’s at. We’re fortu-nate enough to be in it. How do you say it? Sometimeswe dog-paddle; sometimes we take a few gulps ofwater. Other times, you have days like this that youcan build momentum on for a little while.”

PAW’S CORNERBy Sam Mazzotta
Know the Signs of a Sick Cat
DEAR PAW’S CORNER: I’m writing in response toFrustrated in Philadelphia concerning a cat soiling onthe top of her bed. I agree that urinary tract issuescould be the problem. Something else to consider isdiabetes. I had a cat that suddenly starting urinatingon piles of clothes and on top of beds. He also had lostweight. Watching the cat, I saw him “camping out”over the water bowl often, which caused massive clotsin the litter and wherever he went.
Obsessive thirst is a sign of diabetes, so I took him tothe vet, and we are now giving him insulin shots twicea day. Hence, the problem with going outside the boxhas ceased. — Jeanne M., via e-mail
DEAR JEANNE: Thanks! That is definitely anotherpossibility to consider. Cat owners, if at any time yourcat shows a change in behavior or begins repeatedlydoing undesirable things that it didn’t do before —such as going outside the litter box, eating or drinkingchanges, or hissing at seemingly nothing — bringyour cat to the veterinarian.
Other signs of ill health in a cat include a dirty or mat-ted coat — cats are obsessive about cleaning them-selves, so this can be a big sign of a problem — wheez-ing, drooling or lethargy. And if your cat just doesn’tseem like itself but you can’t pinpoint any clear symp-toms, check with the vet anyway. Cats are good at hid-ing illness; it’s an instinctive survival mechanism.

Too many seniors are considering giving away theirpets or taking them to the shelter. Often the senior ison a limited budget, and it’s getting too difficult to payfor pet food. If you’re in this group, help is available.
While there doesn’t seem to be a national network ofpet assistance for seniors, small efforts have sprungup across the country. In some places, animal sheltershave been taking donations of food and money to helppeople keep their pets. Call and ask for help. (Manyhave funds available for veterinary care, too.)
Call the Humane Society’s national number (202-452-1100) or go online to www.humanesociety.org. (Youcan use the computers at the library if you don’t haveInternet.)
Do a Google search for: pets food assistance. Put inyour state to find help in your area. Try this search: petfood pantry. Or this: pets food “need help.” Google alsohas an online article called “Having trouble affordingyour pet?” It includes a list of help organizations forevery state.
Call your veterinarian’s office and ask if they know of alocal help organization.
Many big chain pet stores are donating food to organi-zations on the local level. Call the pet stores in yourarea and ask if they know of local help organizations orif they donate to any.
Call your local food bank. Many are starting to takedonations of pet food.
Researchers say that having a pet to care for can dowonders for our health. We get more exercise as wethrow toys for a cat and get to socialize with otherswhen we take the dog on a walk. Having a pet is goodfor us.
There’s also the little matter of love we share with outpets. Before you give up your pet because of the cost ofits food, ask for help.

Did you know that a home buyer will make a decision on a house within the first10 seconds. In the blink of an eye, they will decide "This is the one" or "Let's move on to thenext one".
There are so many houses on the market these days that not only must the house beattractive, clean and in excellent repair, it should be seductive. Buyers purchase housesbased on emotions. Theirbuying a dream … a lifestyle. Most buyers can't see past asellers personal items ordecor style. Helping a buyerout by setting the stage canimpact how they will feel inthe home … an atmosphereis created that makes themwant to linger longer in thespace and imagine them-selves living there.
Home staging is theprocess of making a home"buyer ready" so that it willappeal to the largest amountof buyers. It's not interior decorating but rather a process of de-cluttering, de-personaliz-ing, utilizing a home sellers furnishings and accessories to highlight the best features of aroom. It's about creating emotional connection between the buyer and the property.
Professionally staged homes:
• Help increase showings - most buyer traffic will come through a home within thefirst two weeks it's on the market than any other time period. This will be a sellersbest audience and having the property ready to show and properly priced is key.
• Houses that have been professionally staged sell faster and for closer to askingprice - according to surveyed Realtors, Home Staging is the second most valuablehome improvement project to a seller when it comes to selling a home by return oninvestment.
• Doesn't cost a dime - according to the 2009 Home Gain Report, home staging has586% return on invest-ment. ($300 cost / $1780price increase)
• Helps reduce a proper-ty’s time on the market -according to the NationalAssociation of Realtorsthe longer a property sitson the market the lowerthe sales price will be.
• A well staged homesuggest a home that hasbeen cared for and mostbuyers will pay more for amove-in ready house.
Condition of the property will directly affect a buyers offer on a house.
Still unsure about the benefits of home staging? Call a local home staging consultantand find out more. Having your house professionally staged can mean the differencebetween a house sitting on the market or selling faster and for top dollar.

Reface Cabinets for Like-New Look
Q: I have kitchen cabinets that are several years oldand look pretty dingy. I thought about restaining them, but would probably need to strip the old finish, and itlooks like a lot of work. I don’t really want to paintthem, as I just want a fresher look to the wood. Can youhelp? — Bill in Sarasota, Fla.
A: You could look into cabinet refacing, rather thanstripping and restaining. There’s still a bit of elbowgrease involved, but refacing can make the cabinetslook entirely new while only replacing the facade. In refacing, the doors and drawer fronts of the cabi-nets are totally replaced. Thin strips of veneer areapplied to the cabinet frames to match the new doors. The cabinet hardware — hinges and pulls — are usu-ally replaced as well. The cabinets themselves don’tcome off the walls at all — refacing simply changes thelook of the forward-facing parts. The cost is significantly less than replacing the cabi-nets. It’s about $1,000 on the cheap end, where a kid-proof material called rigid thermofoil is used, andgoes up from there. Refacing with laminate or wood
will cost more.
To do a refacing, you canwork with a cabinet refac-ing specialist (some bigh o m e - i m p r o v e m e n tstores have a section justfor this type of contract),or you can do it yourself.Either way, photos of thecurrent kitchen should betaken, as well as measure-ments of your cabinets —their length, width anddepth, the length andwidth of the doors and drawers — so that the correct-sized materials can be ordered.
Refacing materials are often sold by the unit (a unitmaking up one cabinet or drawer) or even by thepiece.
It helps to have some basic carpentry skills, or knowsomeone who does, to address any issues that comeup before or during the project. And take advantage ofthe project — while the cabinets are emptied out — tofix any dings or dents within the cabinets themselves.
