(NAPSI)—Here’s some

Medicare advice every

baby boomer should

adhere to: Don’t wait

until the last minute to

plan or enroll.

You have the option to change your drug coverage each year, and some

plan types allow you to enroll at any time. But it can cost you money if you

wait too long or make a bad choice. Here are five tips for Medicare newcom-

ers.

1. Learn the basics. There are two basic ways to cover yourself: Original

Medicare (Part A and Part B) or a Medicare Advantage plan.

If you choose Original Medicare, you’ll likely also need a separate pre-

scription drug benefit (Medicare Part D). And you may want a Medicare

Supplement (or Medigap) plan to fill in some gaps in Original Medicare.

Medicare Advantage plans typically include a prescription drug benefit

(Medicare Part D). Some may also provide things like vision and dental cov-

erage.

2. Choose an affordable plan. Calculate your income: Social Security

benefits, pensions, etc. Then, list your expenses: mortgage/rent, food, etc.

Balance the two and see what you have left for Medicare coverage.

There are Medicare plans available with no monthly premiums, beyond

the standard Social Security deductions for parts A and B. If you know what

you can afford, it’s easier to shop.

3. Evaluate your health. Talk to your doctor about your health and long-

term health risks. Then, look for coverage that fits your specific needs. Be

aware that some Medicare supplement plans charge a higher premium

based on your age, so be sure to consider this when evaluating the long-term

costs of a specific plan.

4. Get the right drug benefit. If you take prescription drugs, a drug com-

parison tool like the one at www.PlanPrescriber.com can help you pick a

plan that covers your drugs at the lowest possible cost. Not all drug plans

cover the same drugs, at the same price or in the same quantities. Trying

to calculate the costs on your own is daunting, but a drug comparison tool

makes it easy. Do this every year during the annual enrollment period.

5. Challenge brand loyalty. Some plans come from companies you’ve

heard of. Investigate brands you trust but also consider plan prices.

All Medicare Supplement plan types (there are 10: A,B,C,D,F,G,K,L,M

and N) must offer the same benefits. A K supplement plan from one insurer

must, by law, cover the same services as a K supplement plan from another

insurer in the same area. But costs for Ks can vary widely. Use an online

comparison tool to compare benefits and prices side by side and make an

informed decision.

6. Ask for help. There are resources online, by phone and in person. You

can call PlanPrescriber at (800) 404-6968 or call the State Health Insurance

Assistance Program or the federal government’s (800) MEDICARE.

ance products.

A stay in the hospital, even a short one, would not usually be considered much of a vacation for most

of us, but I recently got a chance to see how things work from the patient’s point of view. My three days at Piedmont Newnan Hospital made me realize just how blessed we are in America to have such good quality health care. But it wasn’t just good medical treatment, they made me feel as much like a valued customer as a

patient. They really seemed to care.

My family had called ahead so there was a nurse waiting for me as our car pulled up in front of the emergency room. I was immediately taken inside, triaged, then quickly moved into an area where my treatment be-gan. There was no undue waiting or filling out pages of forms about who would pay them. Perhaps bringing my own nurse with me helped a little! My daughter, Jennifer, a Nurse Practitioner, navigated me through the system until I was assigned a permanent room.

Piedmont Newnan has established a team approach which engenders quality health care as well as “patient friendly” service. They were constantly asking how they could make me more comfortable in any way. Each of the staff would introduce themselves when enter-ing the room and discuss the reason for their visit, whether to draw blood, give medicine or just clean the floor. Even a person from the kitchen came in to ask how they might improve food, which was, by the way, very good! Dur-ing a shift change, the outgoing nurse fully discussed my treatment with the arriving staff, and me, in order to avoid possible misunderstandings and mistakes. The result has been a pleasant experience provided by a staff who really made me feel like they cared about my well being.

Let’s face it. We, in America, can get about as good a medical care as exist in the world today. Our problem, however, lies in the “cost” of that care. I don’t believe in socialism, in medicine or anything else, but I hope we can someday find a way to continue this high level of healing in some way that’s available and affordable to all our citizens.

Post script: A diagnosis of a possible mild stroke was soon dismissed. The “real” stroke is expected immediately upon the arrival of the hospital bill!

quality health care as well as

“patient friendly”

service. ”

HEALTH & WELL-BEING

The Obesity Cure

(NAPSI)—Good news for people who feel they are losing the Battle of the Bulge: A new book may provide a breakthrough in nutritional science, identifying both the cause of and solution to obe-sity, America’s No. 1 metabolic disease.

With a lifetime of scientific achievement and clinical insight, Dr. George Scheele, Nobel Associ-ate and author, explains how to use nature’s gift, Power Amino Acids®, to avoid “addictive taste disorders” and harness the body’s own feedback mechanisms to normalize body weight.

In his book, “The Obesity Cure,” Dr. Scheele reveals how to supplement the diet with essential, positive-charged and satiety amino acids (Power Amino Acids®) to tame appetite and rebalance metabolism to burn fat, build muscle and boost energy.

The book is published by NovaLife and available through e-book vendors including Amazon, Ap-ple, Barnes & Noble, and Atlas Books. Buyers also qualify for a free copy of “Power Amino Acids: The Factor4 Advantage in Weight Loss Success.”

Going Green While Updating House

Often when preparing to market a house to sell, owners need to update a few things. Light fixtures, countertops, wall colors, and flooring that are 10 plus years old will be dated and buyers want to purchase a move in ready home. If you are updating to attract more buyers, you may consider GOING GREEN.

When remodeling or building, using products made from recycled materials is a great way to help preserve our non renewable resources, divert and reuse materials once destined for landfills and minimize the impacts on our remaining forests.

Start with paint! Paints and finishes may be one of the leading causes of indoor air pollution, releasing low levels of toxic substances into the air for months after ap-plication. Low- and zero-VOC paints, stains, and finishes use water instead of petroleum-based solvents and are durable, affordable, and pose less harm to human health and the environment. Sherwin Williams offers Green So-

lutions products with their Harmony Interior Latex and Benjamin Moore has a Green Promise designation with Natura paint products. Most paint brand com-panies are offering low and zero VOC solutions.

Next, Flooring - Many companies are offering carpets made from recycled soda bottles. Carpets that are created using recycled materials perform the same as carpets created using virgin material often with the added benefits of increased stain resistance and improved indoor air quality as a result of less toxic off-gas-sing of volatile organic compounds. The manufacturing of recycled content car-pet produces less emissions than ordinary carpet.

Other flooring options can be using wood from a sustainable managed forest, cork, bamboo or natural linoleum made from linseed, cork, tree resin, limestone and jute.

Countertops - when selling, often countertops need updating or replacing. Many options are available using materials from recycled post-consumer and post industrial recycled raw materials added to natural elements. Recycled contents such as mirrors, bottle and window glass, porcelain, industrial furnace residuals from factories and stone scrap are used.

Go to www.greatgreenlist.com for information about more eco friendly building materials. You’ll be surprised at the options available.

Make your home stand out from the competition by including and advertising eco friendly updates. Your children and grand children will appreciate it and you may obtain a faster more profitable sale than other houses that don’t offer these options.

Gardening Tips

The ArmchairGardener

Check potted plants and hanging baskets daily for the proper mois-

ture level.

Water early, unless using drip irrigation, to avoid evaporation. Wa-

tering at night is sometimes recommended to conserve water, but this

practice may lead to disease, mildew, fungus, etc. Drip irrigation is best

because it doesn’t waste water, can be directed exactly where needed,

and doesn’t evaporate quickly as spraying does.

Deadhead (remove spent blooms) and groom plants regularly to pro-

mote good sanitation and healthy plants.

When pruning plants, dip pruners in disinfectant before moving to

other plants to prevent the spread of diseases.

Pinch tips of chrysanthemums until the Fourth of July to make bush-

ier plants, more blooms, and hold back blooming time for later Fall

color.

Pick flowers early in the morning when the sugar and moisture levels

are high. Take a bucket of water to the garden and place cut flowers in

it as soon as they are gathered. Soak cut flowers in water (stems) for

several hours or overnight in a cool shady location before arranging

them. A little lemon-lime soda (or sugar) and a teaspoon of bleach in

the water will help to feed the cut flowers and keep the water clean.

Floral preservative solutions are also commercially available.

Freshly picked tomatoes should not be stored in the refrigerator.

Follow the manufacturer’s directions for fertilizing or use half-

strength. Don’t fertilize when the temperature is extremely high. This

stresses plants. Water before and after fertilizing during summer

months to protect plants.

Wait until Fall to divide and replant or to plant new plants and

shrubs.

Piedmont Newnan HospitalCelebrates Health Care Professionals

National Nurses Week is May 6-12, National Hospital Week is May 8-14.

Newnan, Ga. (May 9, 2011) – Pied-mont Newnan Hospital is calling on the community to help recognize healthcare professionals during National Nurses Week and National Hospital Week. In-dividuals are asked to take a few minutes to thank their favorite nurse or health care worker via the hospital’s Facebook page.

“It takes much more than just hard work and good medicine to deliver the quality of care that our patients ex-pect,” said Piedmont Newnan Hospital CEO Michael Bass. “The bottom line is, patients remember the compassion and the care that they receive from our physicians, nurses, employees and vol-unteers. This is a small, but meaningful way for us as a community to show our appreciation.”

Anyone wishing to recognize a nurse or hospital employee is invited to visit the hospital Facebook page at facebook.com/PiedmontNewnanHospital, be-come a fan, and share your appreciation with a special nurse or healthcare work-er who has touched your life. Written messages may also be mailed to Pied-mont Newnan Hospital to the attention of “Thank You Week” at 60 Hospital Rd, Newnan, Georgia 30263. All messages will be forwarded to the specific individ-uals or departments indicated.

At Piedmont Newnan Hospital, over 230 physicians and 800 employees in a variety of supporting disciplines serve Coweta County and surrounding com-munities day and night, all year long.

National Nurses Week is celebrated annually from May 6, also known as Na-tional Nurses Day, through May 12, the birthday of Florence Nightingale, the founder of modern nursing. For more information, visit the American Nurses Association online at nursingworld.org.

National Hospital Week is the nation’s largest health care event, is a celebration of the history, technology and dedicated professionals that make hospital facili-ties beacons of confidence and care. For more information, visit nationalhospi-talweek.com.
