Musical chairs. It’s a game we played in grammar school, where six children would march to music

around a group of five chairs. When the music stopped, 6 kids tried to dive into 5 chairs. The loser dropped out and we started again with four chairs – and so on. The person to get the last chair was the winner. That seems to be the way it is in Presidential politics. Every four years the candidates play “musical chairs”. They drop out along the way until there is just one chair and two politicians. And as with the old school days game, those last two players can get pretty aggressive!

It seems that each election cycle brings on a new fear that the world, as we know it, will forever be changed if the “wrong” party is elected. I suppose each generation thinks the future is go-ing down the drain, but so far it hasn’t. Things never seem to work out as badly as some predict, and not as good as oth-ers have promised. Most voters align themselves with the party that promises what they think will improve their lot in life, which, I guess, is natural. But does it really have to be that way? Both par-ties have good ideas as well as their share of “lame” ones, depending, of course, on who you’re talking to. But I hope to see the day when we can work together as a nation, taking the best of both camps, creating a national community which encourages an equal opportunity for the “pursuit” of a better life for all.

In a few days, we have the opportunity to elect the person who will lead America for the next four years. Let’s look at the man, not just the party. There’s an old saying I like to use; “The fish stinks from the head down”. I also think that a man of wisdom, intelli-gence and good character will be able to “Lead our country from the head down”. Fixing the ills of our times is going to include some compromises, so, let’s get informed about the issues, look at the character of the man, then cast a vote for our country’s future, and not just along party lines.

And, perhaps we need to do a little “smelling” before we vote!

Joe

ROAD TO RECOVERYVolunteer Drivers

Needed

If you are looking for a great way to donate some of your time, consider becoming a volunteer driver for The American Cancer Soci-ety’s Road to Recovery Program. This volun-teer-based program provides free trans-portation to cancer patients to and from their treatment loca-tions. You can make a real difference in the life of someone who needs regular cancer treatments. It is hard enough to have cancer without having to worry about how you will get to your appointments.

Being a Road to Re-covery volunteer is so easy. And the rewards are great. You can choose how often and what day of the week you would like to drive, and what distance you would be willing to travel. Most patients’ appointments are lo-cal in Coweta County. The training is free. Requirements include a good driving record, a valid driver’s license, auto insurance, and a vehicle that is in good working condition.

Join this meaningful program and make someone’s life a little easier. You might find it makes a difference in your own life as well. For more info on becoming a volunteer driver, contact Road to Recovery volunteer co-ordinator, Emily Stast-ny at 770-378-1616 or email her at [email protected].

What is this on your plant? Why is that plant turning a sickly pale yellow? These and many more questions are perplexing to home gardeners. Edu-cation is the best answer. The local library has a selection of books on gardening subjects. There are also films to check out in the video section. An-

other good source of up-t0-date information is the Master Gardener Program. The Backyard Association is all about gardening and plants. The meetings are held on the 2nd Tuesday of each month at 7:00 p.m. at the Fairgrounds on Pine Road [free and open to the public]. Call 770-254-2620 for information. Of course, the ultimate source is the Coweta County Extension Service at 255 Pine Road in Newnan. The number to call is 770-254-2620. Plant nurseries carry a full line of products with knowledgeable, friendly advice.

Some of the most common pests on houseplants and outside plants are aphids, leaf-miners, Japanese beetles, mealy bugs, scale, spider-mites and thrips. Pyrethrin; Bacillus thuringi-ensis (BT) such as Dipel or Javelin; Insecticidal soaps such as Safer; Or-thene; Sevin; or Malathion are com-monly used to treat these problems. Please be aware that some of these products are toxic (or harmful) to humans, pets, birds, fish, honey bees, butterflies, or earthworms. If you choose to use them - do so with care and caution - according to directions! A good strong spraying of water frequently helps. The introduc-tion of “good bugs” such as Lady bird beetles, parasitic wasps (trichogramma), Lace wings, parasitic nematodes, and others can control most problems if caught early. Just hand-picking some pests is sufficient if done regularly.

Diseases such as powdery-mildew, grey-mold, leaf-spot, black-spot or rust should respond to the proper use of appropriate fungicides such as Sulfur, Funginex, Captan, Maneb, or Daconil. Good sanitation, good cultural practic-es, careful selection of resistant types of plants, and destroying of diseased plants are much better choices for us and the environment.

Since I don’t grow any vegetables, fruit trees, or crops, I choose to let the birds, wasps, frogs, lizards, sinks, and oth-er creatures such as spiders do their work. A balance is usually struck. Washing all plant parts with a strong spray of water works well. Good air circulation and the correct amount of light and water can work wonders. Hand-picking helps. Try beneficial insect release.

Defined RoomsOnce a seller decides to place their house on the market to sell, they may hear their Realtor say that buyer’s need to have the rooms in the house defined for them. Everyone shakes their heads up and down as if they understand what this means, but very often they don’t. What does it mean to have a room defined?

The rooms and spaces around us, are defined by what happens in them. The contents of the room, the layout of the furnishings and accessories — all of this plays a crucial role in how a space is perceived by a buyer.

Let’s take a formal dining room as an example. Most occupants only use a formal dining room once (maybe twice) per year. This is a great deal of square footage to waste on that little bit of use. However, they may need a home office on a much regular basis, so they sell the dining room furniture, install office furniture, a computer and desk supplies. The room is being put to a much better use for this occupant. Once they decide to sell the house and the Realtor has listed the house as having a formal dining room, a buyer expects to see this in the MLS photos as well as when they view the house in person.

If the buyer sees the photo on the right on-line, they aren’t seeing this room used as a dining room and they may dismiss this house from their list of “must see” houses. This house has lost the opportunity to at-tract a buyer before it can even be consid-ered because the “room was not defined” as intended. It can be difficult for home buyers to envision what a space can become with-out a little help.

Sellers will often ask, “can’t they see past how we use the room and see that it could be a dining room?” The answer to that question is … only 10% of buyers CAN visualize a space as its intended use. That means that 90% of buyers CAN NOT visualize this room as a formal dining room. Is that a risk you are willing to take, as a seller?

Now a buyer can look at a photo of this room on the left and see that it is indeed a formal dining room and put this property on their “must see” list.

///////Detour///////A culvert on Wynn Road has deteriorated and created a safety hazard. Coweta County Road Department will be re-placing the old metal culvert pipes with new polymer coat-ed pipes, making the crossing wider and longer. Replac-ing these pipes will cause a portion of Wynn Road to be inaccessible for 2-3 weeks. Another access point is being completed so residents in that area will not be stranded dur-ing this time. Coweta County has obtained temporary rights of way and is building a gravel road through the wooded area at the end of Wynn Road. This temporary road will connect Wynn Road to Boy Scout Road and provide access while the road and culvert are being re-paired and replaced.

It is expected that the tempo-rary road will be complete by early next week. Once it is complete and open for use, the culvert replacement will begin. The work is expected to take 2-3 weeks, weather permitting. Once the new cul-vert is in place, the temporary road will be closed to traffic and rights of way will revert to the original owners. Coweta County thanks those owners for working with us so quickly to solve this problem.

STUDEBAKER PICK-UP TRUCKBy Bob Spruck MotorMouth/south

Many of our younger car enthusiasts (there are some, aren’t there?) may never have seen a Studebaker or may never have even heard the name. The Studebaker brothers who started in business by madeing wagons, stagecoaches and wheel barrows for the Gold Rush in the middle 1800s were one of the earliest companies to take a chance on the new-fangled conveyance called the horseless carriage. (Boy, putting it that way makes it sound like such a long time ago. It also makes me feel almost as old as our publisher, Joe Williams). Their great success in making Conestoga wagons and prairie schooners as well as ammo carriers in WWI encouraged them to consider this new and unproven thing called the auto-mobile. As their designs and product evolved with the new industry, they continued to rely on their proven concepts of utilitarianism and quality. After WWII, in order to stay in business, they and the other automobile manufacturers had to innovate even more quickly than before as a new society, a new culture, and a new economy with different expectations, broader needs and fancier desires.

Studebaker answered this call by continuing their conservative designs and emphasis on strength and sturdiness until the market went in another direction where innova-tion and creature comforts like plush interiors, powerful engines, colors other than black, and a new thing called styling became paramount. Even though Studebaker and other car manufacturers like Packard, Kaiser, Willys, and Hudson had good prod-ucts, the “Big Three”, General Motors, Ford, and Chrysler set the standard for the new generation and succeeded where the others eventually failed. Studebaker gave it a gallant try and lasted longer than most of the others, mostly because they empha-sized styling and led the way with many of the early innovations that later became standards in the industry. Studebaker was one of the earliest users of outside styling consultants, retaining Raymond Loewy Associates, one of the most popular and suc-cessful industrial designers of the twentieth century. They closed their main produc-tion facilities in South Bend, Indiana in 1963.

One of these was the idea that the utilitarian heavy duty pick-up truck, previously rel-egated to the farm or small business, could be as stylish and comfortable as the lat-est sedans were. Using their very successful Lark model, Studebaker combined the stylish front end of the sedan with the utilitarian bed of their bigger truck products

What’s In Your Garage?

and produced the Studebaker Champ truck you see here. Over a lifespan from 1960 to 1964 they were available with a variety of six cylinder and eight cylinder engines, and three and four speed manual transmissions, some shifted from the steering column and others from the floor. One of the Studebaker innovations that lasted was the slid-ing rear window, offered as an option since they did not provide air conditioning in their trucks.

How Do I Get Started? You may call the Volunteer Coordinator at (770) 254-8612 with any questions

or to request an application. Volunteers may choose to spend time with patients and their families within their own towns and communities and/or

anywhere within the 12 counties where we are licensed.

Volunteers play a vital role in the support of our pa-tients and their families. Support is given in many ways – sitting at bedside to relieve an exhausted caregiver, performing small tasks in the patient’s home, reading to a patient, or spending time with a patient and their family as a “friendly visitor”. No special skills are needed but a passion to serve others is desired.

Please call Mary at 678-817-4180 if you have ques-tions about our program or if you would like to at-tend volunteer training.

Volunteers for Affinis HospiceAll you need is a caring heart! Your involvement will communicate value to these patients and their families as you provide companionship and a brief respite for caregivers. You will not need to provide any medical or physical care to the patient, just a caring heart and a lis-tening ear. You can provide caregiver relief for 2-4 hours each week to allow the caregiver to enjoy time out of the home. You can use your gifts and talents to impact someone in their last stages of life in many ways, and we will make sure you are well-trained, equipped, and supported.
