Local author and small business owner, Stacey Livingston of Newnan, has released book 1 of her adventure fiction “E-day” book series entitled Shattered. Livingston, co-owner of Baby Dimensions on Baker Road in Newnan, is also an aspiring novelist. She has been working towards publi-cation for three years. As her business became more popular, she had to organize her time to include the writing of her exciting story. Finally accomplishing the completion of Shat-tered, she is nearing completion of Book 2:

Bedlam. Set for the most part in North Georgia and Tennessee, Shattered is a modern-day adven-

ture story about a new weapon that is detonated over modern America and destroys all modern conveniences. Jack Denton was laughed out of

the military 10 years ago for trying to warn the government of this exact problem. Now, the very people who scorned him are asking for his help to make things right again. Three very diverse groups of Americans, all starting out on opposite shorelines, must come together in order to help Jack in this daunting task. In a journey facing nearly insurmount-able odds, Jack and the others must deal with a world turned upside down. They must try to function in a society where luxuries like elec-tricity, cars and civility are distant memories of

the past. A recent review on Amazon had this to say about Shattered: “I read two to three novels a week and gen-erally avoid new authors. Glad I didn’t miss this one. The characters become your friends, the story line is well plotted and the pace of the action keeps you reading. Well done. Looking forward to the next book in the series.” To contact Livingston about information on Shattered, call 770-502-0225 or email her at: [email protected] .

M y wife and I were recently having a pleasant dinner with our friends, the Longo’s, from San Juan. While discussing my recent 400-

mile trip (in one day) on a motorcycle, the subject came up about motorcycle licensing in the state of Georgia. “I’ve been riding for over 50 years”, said I, “and I still have a learners permit”. “Fifty years!” exclaimed Dr. Longo. “You must be quite a slow learner!!”

I suppose that, from time to time, we all seem to procrasti-nate on certain things in our lives, however, some of us have developed this unproductive habit into an “Art Form”. And I

am quite a skilled artist. I am trying to change though. I’ve heard that you can change bad habits into good ones through daily discipline. So I’ve learned to complete my tasks at the same time each and every day – the last minute. And if it wasn’t for that last minute, I might not get anything done.

Seriously though, there can be some good things about waiting a while to get started. Those who get the job done fi rst thing may become too tired to enjoy the unimportant, but fun, things. A “Disciplined Slackerd” will always get the job done, even if at the eleventh hour. And it helped me get a few passing grades in school. I usually waited till the night before (or the next morning) to turn in a report. The teachers were so fl ab-bergasted to receive it on time, they gave me extra credit and upped me to, perhaps, a “C”. …. Sometimes. It took me 10 years to win my division in vintage sports car rac-ing. Just think if I had won immediately, there would have been little else to look forward too. And those folks who start too early, sometimes get discouraged, leaving us procrastinators to seize their opportunity as well as ours.

Actually, and with all kidding aside, this is a serious issue with many of us. There can be lost opportunities as well as unfortunate consequences for those who put things off until later. And sometimes later is just not good enough. I have accomplished more than some, yet less than others, but I could have done far more with a disciplined approach to taking action at the appropriate time. I recently ran across some relevant quotes about procrastina-tion which I have included in our “Encouraging Words” section. Perhaps they will get us thinking how we can develop a new mind-set, a different approach to winning this war, or at least winning one battle at a time. I believe there will be some positive rewards awaiting

you…. and for me. Let’s make a go at it.

I recently had the opportunity to visit “The Dog House” just off Bulls-boro Dr. in Newnan. It’s a full-service grooming and boarding facility owned by Newnan’s Grace Woodford. I felt quite impressed with the cleanliness and comfort of the animals, as well as the professional at-

titude of the employees. They all seemed to love what they were doing.

Boarding and grooming is not just a business for Grace, but something she loves doing. “I learned from a person who once groomed for Walt Disney. I did chores around her farm, doing labor for education,” said Grace. “I watched and learned with no pay. And it was almost six months before she let me do my first groom-

ing. That dog took me 8 hours but I passed the test and later started grooming for her.” That was about 40 years ago.

But Grace Woodford didn’t stop learning. She attended seminars and eventually participated in them. That work finally qualified her as an international speaker, judge and consultant. And now being a Certified Mas-ter Groomer Meritus, she is at the pinnacle of her trade. Moreover, Grace has the honor of being the first in the country to receive dual certification from the Interna-tional Society of Canine Cosmetology and the American Boarding Kennel Association.

“I’m a perfectionist and very picky about how I run this business,” Grace told me. “We have a different attitude – our employees work as a team, and are passionate about the care and well-being of our customer’s dogs.” That at-titude was evident as I was shown through the facility and talked with the employees.

The Dog House provides a clean and comfortable environment for its overnight “guests”. They have playtime and are fed only premium food, and they all get loving attention. But the dogs with that “upper crust” attitude may want to reserve one of Graces “suites”, which include a real (but down-sized) bed, wall murals, and a sliding patio door to a private run! (It really is a “dog’s life” there.) There is also day care plan from 9 to 6 daily. (They take cats, too) In addition to routine pet styling, The Dog House can provide special spa treatments including carding, hand stripping, facials, and pawdicures including paw and leg massages.

So when you need a place to safely care for your pet, whether an overnight stay or a proper grooming, you may want to consider The Dog House lo-cated at 22 Jefferson Place. And for an appointment or for more detailed information, ring them at 770-253-7234 or check their web site at www.doghousekennel.com. Just tell them The Coweta Shopper sent you.

Symbiosis is the living together of unlike plants to the mu-tual advantage of the partnership - otherwise known as com-panion planting. This is not a new practice, but quite an old one. Over a long period of time, gardeners have learned that different kinds of plants, growing close together, have certain effects on each other - benefi cial or detrimental.

Some examples of companion planting are tall and bush or vining plants grown together, with legumes used to add nitrogen, such as corn with climbing beans and pumpkin or squash. The herb borage can be planted with tomatoes to at-tract bees for good pollination. Aromatic herbs such as rose-mary, mint, sage or thyme, etc. may deter cabbage worms and other insects. Basil is said to repel fl ies and mosquitoes. Catnip may protect against fl ea beetles. Horseradish deters potato beetles and garlic prevents Japanese beetles. Chives help to deter insects. The planting of onions helps discourage ants. Radishes repel insects.

Some fl owering plants are very useful in the garden. Sunfl owers attract bees and birds. Marigolds repel and kill nematodes. Pot marigolds and petunias and nastur-tiums repel insects in the garden.

Organic gardeners are always experimenting with ways to combat pests and insects without the use of chemical sprays and poi-sons.

Encouraging Words

ProcrastinationProcrastination is the problem of putting things

off. Many of us procrastinate on certain, or many

things in our lives and come up with some quite

elaborate excuses as to why we can’t do this task

today. By changing our attitude toward our work

and doing it energetically, we’ll fi nd that those

tasks that once seemed boring, will take on a new

meaning. By changing our attitude, we can learn

to tackle them with enthusiasm for the sheer joy of

accomplishment.

Q“Nothing is so fatiguing as the eternal hanging on of an uncompleted task”.

~ William James

Q“Putting off an easy thing makes it hard.

Putting off a hard thing makes it impossible”.

~ G. C. Lorimar

Q“Waiting is a trap.

There will always be excuses to wait. The truth is, there are only two things

in life, excuses and results, and the excuses just don’t count.

~ Robert Anthony

Q“You cannot escape the responsibility

Another new era began on May 12 at Carr Eye Care Center. After almost 13 years at its Baker Road location, Carr Eye Care Center has moved. The new location isn’t far away, about the length of three football fields and just across Hwy. 34 East behind CVS. The official address is 1065 Sullivan Road. And most importantly, the move fits Dr. Sean Carr’s desire for more room. “We simply needed a much larger space,” Carr said. “We’re moving from an office with 2,400 sq.ft. to one over 4,400 sq.ft.” Indeed, the state-of-the-art facility will not change how Carr Eye Care and its staff of six handles the day-to-day requirements of its customers. “Our customers will continue to receive that same superior service and the quality products we’ve offered since opening in 2001,” Carr said. One area in the new Carr Eye Care Center will significantly increase ... the

eyeglass frame display. Carr said the frame display area is now double in size of the previous location and can accommodate a much larger frame se-lection. In addition, Carr Eye Care continues to offer the following products and ser-vices ... comprehensive eye care, contact lens service, treatment of eye diseases, eyeglass frames, LASIK co-management, sunglasses, eyeglass lenses and coatings and contact lens. The move is the second major devel-opment in the growth of Carr Eye Care since its Coweta County beginning. In 2007, Carr Eye Care opened its down-town Newnan location – Coweta Eye Care – on Bullsboro Drive under the direction of Dr. Grant MacDonald. And within the last six months, Cowe-ta Eye Care also moved to a state-of-the-art facility on Bullsboro Drive in front of the Food Depot Shopping Center.

In most cases, no. Doctors, hospitals, and VA or CCSP caseworkers refer their clients to certain companies or agencies as a convenience to you. But just because they refer a company, does not mean you have to use or keep that company. I run into folks all the time who are not happy with their Hospice Company, their Home Health Company, their Home Care Company, and even their medical supply company. When I ask them why they are still using them, the common answer is that they didn’t know they could change. YOU DO HAVE A CHOICE. If you are not happy with your hospice, home health, home care or medical supply company, call the company you have and let them know why you are not happy and see if they can make changes. If they can’t or if the changes do not satisfy you, call their competitors and find out if a different company can provide more compatible ser-vices. If you are receiving services through the VA or CCSP, call your case worker and tell them you want to change agencies. If you would like more information about how to make a change for the better, call or email me.

QUESTION: I get home care services through the VA. Do I have to keep the company they referred to me?

Brooks Elementary School Principal Dr. Julie Raschen has been named as Georgia’s 2014 National Distinguished Principal, by the National Association of Elementary School Principals (NAESP) and the U.S. Department of Education. Raschen was awarded the honor by Hal Beaver, Executive Director of the Georgia Association of Elementary School Principals (GAESP), at a surprise reception for Raschen at Brooks Elementary School May 20. The school’s students, parents, faculty and

staff, and Coweta County School Board mem-bers and administrators, joined Beaver in congratulating Raschen during the announce-ment. “You always celebrate us,” said Amy Harri-son, Brooks’ Assistant Principal, speaking on behalf of the assembled students and staff. “I think it’s time we celebrate you.” “Dr. Raschen was nominated and selected by her fellow principals through a statewide search process conducted by the Georgia As-sociation of Elementary School Principals,” said Beaver, Executive Director of GAESP. Beaver noted that Raschen was chosen by

GAESP to represent Georgia as the state’s Distinguished Principal out of over 1,300 elementary school principals state-wide. In November, Raschen will travel to Washing-ton, D.C., for two days of activities planned to honor and bring well-deserved recognition to the elementary level educators chosen by all 50 states, the District of Columbia, plus private and overseas schools. She will officially be pre-sented with her Distinguished Principal’s hon-or by US Secretary of Education Arne Duncan at that event. Dr. Raschen is a 21-year educator in the Coweta County School System, beginning

her career during the 1993-94 school year as a 1st grade teacher at White Oak Elementa-ry School. Raschen became the principal of Elm Street in 2005, and in 2009 was named the principal of the newly-opened Brooks Elementary School, in northwestern Coweta County. Dr. Raschen is a 1992 graduate of Georgia Southern University, earning her Master’s de-gree from the State University of West Georgia in 2002 and her Doctorate at Samford Univer-sity in 2007. She is married to David Raschen and the couple has two children – David Allen and Casey.

Raschen named Georgia’s 2014 National Distinguished Principal

Fuel prices have been steadily rising, and there doesn’t appear to be any relief in sight. According to the U.S. Energy Information Administration’s recent summer forecast, retail prices

could average $3.61 per gallon during the summer driving season, three cents higher than last year.Th e current average price of regular fuel in the United States is $3.639 per gallon. In Georgia,

the current average price of regular fuel is $3.636 per gallon, according to AAA’s Daily Fuel Gauge Report.

What’s driving the change in gas prices during the summer? Supply, demand, hurricanes, geopo-litical tension and the price of oil all play a role, said Mark Jenkins, AAA spokesman.

If you’re looking for ways to save at the pump, Jenkins off ers some advice to get the most out of your fuel.

Drive sensibly and safely. Aggressive driving, speeding and rapid acceleration waste gas and 1. can lower gas mileage by 33 percent at highway speeds and by 5 percent in city limits. Sen-sible driving not only saves gas, but it’s safer for yourself and those around you.Remove excess weight. Remove unnecessary items in your vehicle, especially heavy ones. 2. An extra 100 pounds in a vehicle can reduce your MPG by up to 2 percent. Th e reduction is based on the percentage of extra weight relative to the vehicle’s weight and aff ects smaller vehicles more than larger ones.Avoid constant braking. Minimize the need to brake by anticipating traffi c conditions. Be 3. alert for slowdowns and red lights ahead of you and decelerate by coasting whenever pos-sible.Use the air conditioner conservatively. Most air conditioners have an “economy” or “recircu-4. lation” sett ing that reduces the amount of hot outside air that must be chilled. Both sett ings can reduce the air-conditioning load — and save gas.

Car maintenance can also help drivers save money on gas, said Paul Grubb, owner of TSI Auto-motive at 5089 Highway 16 East in Turin. Here are his tips:

Maintain proper air pressure in your tires. Tires with too litt le air can reduce your vehicle’s • fuel economy.Get regular tune-ups. To maintain optimal performance, it’s important to service your ve-• hicle at regular intervals.Service your car when the check engine light appears. Th is could indicate your engine isn’t • running effi ciently and could be crippling your fuel mileage.

TSI Automotive can be reached at 770-599-1971 for your vehicle’s maintenance. Here are some additional ways to save on fuel:Kroger Fuel Program:Th e Kroger fuel program allows shoppers to receive savings of up to $1 off per gallon on fuel

purchases at Kroger and 10¢ off per gallon at participating Shell Stations. (At Kroger gas stations, 100 fuel points equal 10 cents off per gallon, 200 fuel points equal 20 cents off per gallon, etc. Th e maximum amount, 1,000 fuel points, equal $1 off per gallon.)

Kroger shoppers can earn double fuel points this summer with purchases on gift cards, no-con-tract wireless phones and airtime cards. Also, customers can fi nd a digital coupon at htt ps://www.kroger.com/topic/fuel-program to earn double fuel points when they shop on Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays.

Otherwise, shoppers can earn one fuel point for every $1 they spend on groceries and other items. Th ey must scan their Kroger Plus card to receive fuel points.

Th ere is no limit on how many fuel points shoppers can earn. Th ey can also earn points on pre-scriptions. Shoppers earn 50 fuel points with the purchase of one non-federally funded prescription. Federally funded prescriptions earn one point for every $1 of out-of-pocket costs for new, trans-ferred and refi lled prescriptions.

When redeeming fuel points at Kroger fuel centers, shoppers can choose how much of their dis-count they want to use, from 10 cents to $1 off per gallon. Th ey can scan their Plus Card at the pump and choose how much of their available discount to redeem.
