• McNeese State flnished in a tie for second place in the Southland Conference standings with a 5-2 league record...this is the fifth straight year for the Cowboys to place either first or second in the SLC standings...it’s also the eighth year in the last 10 for the Cowboys to finish as either champion or runnerup in the league race

• McNeese finished at 6-5 for the full season...this included a four game win-ning streak at the tail end of the year....the Cowboys won four of their last five games...also, two losses were against two of the top ranked BCS teams in the nation - No. 5 LSU and No. 15 Missouri

• LEWIS’ KICK WAS MCNEESE’S LONGEST WINNING BOOT: the 52 yard field goal that Josh Lewis hit to win the game against SE Louisiana was the longest game winning field goal kick in McNeese history...the previous longest was a 49 yard kick by Don Stump that beat UL-Monroe (then Northeast Louisi-ana) in the Cowboys’ 1979 Independence Bowl season.....also, in last year’s game with Texas State, it was a Lewis 28 yard field goal with 1:30 left in the game that gave the Cowboys a 30-27 victory

• LEADING RUSHERS - Cowboys had three in 11 games...Marcus Wiltz led vs Lamar (160) and Cal Poly (32) and then an injury caused him to miss the remainder of season....Champlain Babin led in the game against Sam Houston State with 74 yards on 10 carries......Andre Anderson has led against Missouri (47), NW State (66), Stephen F. About the UniversityMcNeese State is located in Lake Charles, LA, a city of 80,000 in the Southwest part of Louisiana. McNeese was established in 1939 as a junior college and a division of the Louisiana State University system. It later broke away becoming McNeese State. the school is named for John McNeese, the first superintendent of education in Calcasieu Parish (the parish in which Lake Charles is located). The school mascot is the Cowboy and was derived from the fact that John McNeese was also a cattle rancher and was renowned for making the first cattle drive across the Sabine River (the river that separates Louisiana and Texas).

McNeese is a coed university with an enrollment of 8,645. Dr. Philip C. Williams serves as the president and Tommy McClelland is the athletic director.

The schools of study for the university are: the Arts, Sciences, Engineering/Technology, Nursing, Education, Business and the Graduate School.

Among the many former McNeese State athletes who have gone on to professional stardom are: Joe Dumars in basketball (now president of the Detroit Pistons), Leonard Smith (Buffalo, St. Lou-is) and Zack Bronson (San Francisco) in football and Ray Fon-tenot (New York Yankees) and Ben Broussard (Cleveland Indians) in baseball.

COWBOY NOTES- McNeese State just completed its 67th football season....it’s actually been 70 years since McNeese fielded its first team...the Cowboys played a five game schedule in 1940 but then dropped the sport the following year be-cause of WWII and resumed it in 1949

DEFENSIVE GEMS There were many during victory over Sam Hous-ton State but among the best were these that halted Bearkat scoring drives

- DESMUND LIGHTEN - blocked a field goal with 10:33 left in the game.... his block of the field goal forced the Bear-kats to go for a touchdown in the final minute of play instead of possibly a field goal for the winning points

- DARRELL JENKINS - recovered a mid-air fumble with 7:24 left in the game ....came on the Cowoby 16 yard line with Sam Houston driving

- MALCOLM BRONSON - intercepted a pass with 5:36 left on the McNeese 36 yard line

- SETH THOMAS - knocked the ball out of the hands of Sam Houston receiver Seth Patterson in the end zone with only 48 seconds left in the game

AND, AGAINST TEXAS STATE

- BRANDON ROBINSON - sacked Texas State quarter-back Tim Hawkins in the end zone for a safety and the Cow-boys first score of the game....he also intercepted a pass later in the game

- MALCOLM BRONSON - picked off a pass and went 74 yards for a touchdown -- the seventh longest in McNeese history

- GEREMY PILATE - was credited with 16 tackles and that included four tackles behind the line

CLARK MOVED UP Cowboy tight end Corday Clark caught 30 passes this season and moved up the ladder on the list of all-time McNeese receivers....he finished with 59 catches for 700 yards...that puts him among the top 10 all-time tight end re-ceivers in McNeese history.....Chris Fontenot, who played 1994 to 1997, leads the way with 99 catches while James Moore (1969-72) had 76, R. C. Slocum (1964-67) had 74, Wes Mangan (2006-09) had 67 and Pat Matthews (1996-99) had 59 and Alan Heisser (1974-77) had 59..... Clark scored six times on receptions....the tight end record of 12 touchdown catches was set by Mangan Also Clark’s 30 receptions this year put him fourth high on the single season list of tight ends for pass recep-tions...the school single season record is 44 and was set by Chris Fontenot in the 1997 season

SACK MEN Josh Ellison, Terrance Freeman and Geremy Pilate have the most career sacks on the present Cowboy team. Ellison now leads with 14. Freeman has 10.5 while Pilate has nine. Also, Desmund Lighten has moved up with eight for his career and he and Ellison lead the team this season with four each. Bryan Smith, now with Jacksonville in the NFL, holds the school career record with 31 while Kavika Pittman (played with Dallas) had 22.5 and Erick Kidd had 22. MORE COWBOY NOTESTRUE FRESHMEN RECEIVERSthe Cowboys put true freshmen to good use at the re-ceiver positions this year...three of them - Wes Briscoe, Diontae Spencer and Jereon McGilvery caught passes this season.....Briscoe ranked fifth on the team with 19 receptions for 260 yards and a team high three touch-downs, Spencer caught 12 for 175 yards and McGilvery has caught five for 40 yards.....Against SE Louisiana, Spencer came up with the longest reception of the season for the Cowboys...he teamed with Cody Stroud and Briscoe on a 78 yard re-cepltion...Stroud tossed the ball - intended for Briscoe - it was high and Briscoe went high, tipping the ball into the hands of Spencer who was caught on the SE Louisiana seven yard line from which Andre Anderson covered the final yards for the game’s first td ....Spencer has also been used in the backfield in the Wildcat formation and has rushed for 128 yards on 32 carries this season, scroring a touchdown...Briscoe caught a game high four

BEN BOURGEOIS - Academic All-district Cowboy punter Ben Bourgeois was named last week to the ESPN Academic all-district team (District VI) as selected by the College Sports Information Directors of American (CoSIDA). Bourgeois is a junior and carries a perfect 4.00 grade point average. He is an engineering major. Throughout his entire school career - he has never made anything but an “A” in any subject or course he has taken.

Matt ViatorHead Coach

In four seasons, Matt Viator has become one of the most successful coaches in the NCAA’s FCS division. He has guided the Cowboys to a Southland Conference football championship and into the NCAA Division I championship in three of his four years as head coach at McNeese State. His 2007 team posted only the fourth undefeated, untied regular season record in the university’s history, won the league title for a second year and participated in the NCAA FCS championship for a second straight year. His 2006 and his 2009 squads also won league titles and participated in the playoffs.

Viator had taken over the head job four games deep into the 2006 season, went 6-2 the rest of the way, won the SLC title and put his team into the NCAA FCS championship. His coaching record is an outstanding 39-15 and in conference competition only, his teams have a 27-7 mark. Viator has earned numerous coaching honors includ-ing two SLC coach of the year awards and a Louisiana collegiate coach of the year honor. He has also been a finalist for the national Eddie Robinson award twice. He claimed his first collegiate coaching victory in his very first game as head coach when the Cowboys posted a 30-27 win over Southern Utah in 2006. Viator is the 14th head coach in McNeese history. He was 6-2 in his first season and 5-1 in league play, winning the final five league games of the year.

Prior to his becoming head coach, Viator, who is a graduate of McNeese, had served the uni-versity as offensive coordinator and is regarded as one of the top Division I offensive minds. The Cowboys have ranked among the national leaders in offense for eight of the past 10 years and the university has also produced the Southland Confer-

ence’s top offensive performer four of the last seven seasons. His offenses have led the league in scoring five times and in 2008 set school records for total offense per game, passing offense per game and scoring average per game. The Cowboys had the nation’s leading scorer last year, tailback Toddrick Pendland. Before he joined McNeese, Viator was one of the top prep coaches in Louisiana, producing an 81-37 won-lost record, winning one state crown and five league titles. He joined McNeese in 1999 as linebacker coach and was made offensive coordinator in 2000, the Cowboys lead-ing the league in both scoring offense and total offense that year.
