Dear Alumni, Parents and Friends,

As a Catholic school, we regularly try to incorporate the theme of gratitude into every component of our mission. There is much for which we give thanks on a daily basis at Covington

Catholic High School, and as such, we realize that were it not for the grace of God, we would not have the countless opportunities we presently enjoy. It is with gratitude that we also realize that it is through the generous support of alumni, patrons, donors and the entire Covington Catholic Community that we continue to reap the benefits that our beautiful campus affords us on a daily basis.

Recently, we received news that is indicative of the support we receive and serves as an example of the opportunities our community provides for which we are grateful. We have been blessed with a very generous donation from the Dennis and Joyce Griffin family that has allowed us to purchase the Church of the Nazarene just north of our campus. Multiple groups including the faculty, students, and school board members have toured this facility and completed surveys in order to help us evaluate how this space can be best utilized for the future advancement of Covington Catholic. We were also able to purchase two acres of land directly behind the right field wall of the baseball field. This land will be filled in and excavated over the next two

years, and it will be transformed into a small athletic field for our students. These campus expansions will allow us to continue to provide opportunities for our young men and give us flexibility as we move forward with the overall vision of our learning community.

We are also expanding academically as we plan to implement a revamped technology curriculum, a new lab, and new computer equipment throughout the academic building for the 2010-11 school year. It is our goal to keep Covington Catholic High School on the cutting edge of technology as we face the exciting and challenging times ahead. In an effort to do so, we have launched a $300,000 technology campaign to help us acquire all of the tools necessary to continue to provide an education that will allow our graduates to attain success in the ever-changing society that they will enter upon graduation.

I am grateful that so many of you, our alumni, sacrifice in so many ways to support Covington Catholic High School and to ensure that our present and future Colonels receive the very best learning opportunities available. Achieving our goals and realizing our vision can only be brought to fruition through a concerted collective effort and your donation of time, talent, or treasure is very valuable and is appreciated by our administration, faculty, parents and our young men.

Catholic community is indebted to the Dennis Griffin family for its generous donation. Covington Catholic High School joins a long list of worthwhile organizations that the Griffin family supports through its philanthropic efforts. This substantial gift is an endorsement of our joint vision of keeping Covington Catholic High School on the cutting edge of academic excellence. We are humbled that a family with such a rich local heritage has chosen to invest in our mission to develop our young men spiritually, academically, physically, and socially. We are proud that we have earned their confidence in our continued efforts to cultivate young men who will become the future leaders of our communities.” The building is approximately 22,000 square feet with a large room that was used as a sanctuary, undercroft and classrooms. Faculty, students, parents and alumni have toured the facility and completed surveys which will help determine the uses for the space. The fifty year old building is in need of renovation to better serve the needs of the school. More details and projected costs of this exciting project will be revealed in the coming weeks. While current economic conditions make this a difficult time to conduct a capital campaign. It is the

Through a generous gift of $865,000 from Traci Griffin-Kautzman, Tony Griffin & Toby Griffin, Covington Catholic High School has purchased for that amount the land and building next to the school that currently houses The Church of the Nazarene. Acquisition of this 1 ½ acre piece of land has been in the long range plans for Covington Catholic High School for many years. The opportunity to purchase the parcel arose in late 2009 and was pursued by the Griffin family. Tony ’86 and Toby ’89 are both Covington Catholic graduates. Traci has two sons, Mitchell ‘12, and Marcus who will be a member of the Class of 2014. In a letter sent to Principal Bob Rowe announcing the gift, the Griffins stated: “Our community is a better place because of the development of strong successful men that have graduated from Covington Catholic High School. In an economic time such as we are living in, everyone, especially schools, is simply trying to maintain status quo, and plans of growth and expansion are often put aside to a day that seems very far in the future. Our goal of obtaining the property at this time is to secure land that will be essential for the growth of the Covington Catholic campus in the future.” The Griffins also expressed a desire that part of the building be used to create an alumni center and asked that our parent and alumni tradesmen be given the opportunity to match their donation by providing their talents and services in completing the renovations. school’s hope that there will be some alumni and parents that can provide their skilled trades or supply materials either pro bono or at reduced costs. Others can provide financial assistance to truly be the House that the Alumni built. Anyway..Wantedtotellyoualittlesidenote..ThegirlIwaswith(itwasherdogthatwasthesubjectofmypiece)istheexhibitdirectorattheContemporaryArtsCenter.Sheprobablywasn’texpectingmuch,sheisforcedtogotoopeningsconstantly.Butshewasblownawayjustfromtheamountofpeopleandtheenergythere.It’shardtoexplainhavingyouasanartteacher,peopledon’treallygetit.Aswemadeourwaythroughtherooms,shekeptrunningintopeoplethatsheactuallyknew,allformerstudents,andnow,peoplethatsheknowsandhighlyrespectsthroughherconnectionsatthemuseum.Shedidn’tknowwhattosay.Itfinallystartedtoclickforherthough.EventuallyshestoppedmeandwaslikeWHOISTHISGUY?AndItriedtotellheragainthatyouwereaspecialkindofArtteacher.So,Ithoughtthatyouwouldlikethat,thefactthatmanyofyourstudentsaremakinganameforthemselves,youprobablyalreadyknewthatbutthoughtIwouldsharemystory.Ipersonallythoughtitwashilariousseeinghershellshocked.

On Saturday, December 12th, a crowd too big to count celebrated Mr. Hader’s 25 years of teaching art at Covington Catholic High School. The event was held at Sigra Gallary in Bellevue, KY. Artwork came from all over the country to be displayed as a tribute to Tim and the talent he has inspired (over 78 artists). Thanks to committee members who helped with the reunion: Matt Eckerle, Zach Holbrook, Jason Hargis, Ray Elfers, Sue Finke, Jane Votel, Annette Restle and Jennifer Abdrabbo. Five years ago, Covington Catholic High School was approached by the Dennis M. and Lois A. Doyle Family Foundation with the offer to initiate scholarships in the name of a donor or alumni of CCH, if that other person was willing to match the Doyle’s offer to contribute $30,000.00 to the scholarship. As a result of the Doyle’s offer, Covington Catholic has been able to establish six separate scholarships in conjunction with other donors/honorees.

When the Doyle’s offered to fund a seventh scholarship in late 2009, the Wulfeck family came to mind because of their love for their school and their desire to give back. Ken Wulfeck ’77 did not hesitate when the call was made to see if he would consider joining the Doyle’s in the establishment of a seventh scholarship. Ken said, “Now more than ever the students and their families need our help. We are very happy to do this for the school.” Ken, Mary, Erik ‘03, Andy ‘04 and Kendall are all part of the Wulfeck Family Scholarship. At an all school Mass in December, Ken announced to the student body the establishment of the scholarship. Following the announcement, a tradition of chanting the cha cha koola cheer was led by Andy & Zach Holbrook. The energy continued with Erik, Andy, Ken & Zach leading the student body in the CCH fight song.

One of Covington Catholic’s objectives is to make sure the financial aid program will support any student who wants to come here when, financially, they cannot afford to do so. Scholarships are established specifically for financial aid, where only the interest is used and the principle is never touched. The minimum requirement to establish a scholarship is $10,000. Once a family qualifies for financial aid, the student is awarded tuition assistance through the work study program. Students are required to work in the program in order to receive the assistance. Not all schools operate their scholarship programs this way, but Covington Catholic feels that through our current system, the students learn from their experiences and garner a deeper appreciation for their education.

Thanks again to the Wulfeck family for their support and dedication to the students, school and our families. They truly have “A spirit that will not die!”

And thanks once again goes to the Doyle Foundation. Since the inception of their scholarship program 5 years ago, CCH has been able to double its endowment!!

This year 55 students qualified for over $200,000 in financial aid, which to date has been the most requested in the history of Covington Catholic.

Dennis & Joyce Griffin 2010NorthernKentuckiansoftheYear

This past fall, the administration visited several area high schools to research their academic and athletic programs. One thing that stood out from their visits was the need to update our technology. Returning to our school with the 8 year old computers, immediate decisions were made that our students deserved long overdue upgrades not only to our computer labs, but a completely revamped computer curriculum that better prepared them for college and careers ahead. An aggressive campaign to raise $300,000 was kicked off at the first of the year, with a goal of attaining those funds by April 30th so that all of these changes could be instituted when our students returned in August. To date, the drive has raised $65,000. A complete description of the comprehensive plan is available on our website under the tab, Ways to Give. Highlights of the plan include the addition of a new Graphic Arts and CAD lab, which will allow the new courses of Graphic Design, Web Design and CAD I to be offered to our upperclassmen. Our two current computer labs will also be completely updated with new energy saving monitors and computers which will allow us to continue to offer Java Programming to be taught for college credit by Thomas More College, as well as offer the incoming freshmen a newly designed class that touches on the basics of technology applications. All students will benefit from the fundraising drive. SmartBoards and projector systems will be added to all of our classrooms. A Netbook cart of 30 laptops will rotate between classrooms with more carts to be added in the future. Even alumni will benefit with the creation of a totally new website that will be able to provide more information to parents, students and alumni with e-newsletters, and the ability to make donations on line, as well as registering for events like the golf outing and reunions. Alumni will even have the ability to have private class blogs. Perhaps one of the most anticipated features will be the ability to order CCH spirit wear online and have it shipped directly to you from our newly expanded and upgraded spirit shop. Covington Catholic High School is proud to announce that Dennis & Joyce Griffin have been named “The 2010 Northern Kentuckians of the Year.” Mr. & Mrs. Griffin will be honored on Wednesday, April 28, 2010 at the Northern Kentucky Convention Center beginning with a reception at 11:15 a.m. and followed by a noon luncheon.

Dennis and Joyce Griffin have enriched the Greater Cincinnati area through their tireless philanthropic efforts and successful business ventures and are most deserving of this honor. Before the Griffins even learned that the selection committee had chosen them as this year’s award recipients, their family surprised Covington Catholic with a donation which enabled the school to purchase much needed property for our campus expansion.

As the oldest of twelve children, Dennis Griffin’s life has been devoted to taking care of family as well

as leading the family’s agri-recycling business, Griffin Industries. With his vast experience and innovative ideas, Dennis is known throughout the country as the foremost expert in the rendering industry. He now currently serves as the chairman of the Griffin Family Trust (GFT) where he manages all of the charitable giving for the family as well as other new business ventures.

Dennis has also served in a variety of roles on various boards including the Board of Directors for Kentucky’s Agriculture Development Board, Director of the Kentucky State Chamber of Commerce and the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation Board of Directors. Dennis is actively involved with other leaders in the Northern Kentucky community and in the Commonwealth of Kentucky.

Joyce also has established a prestigious career of service and believes very strongly in supporting

education. She has served on many boards including the Northern Kentucky University Board of Regents, the Northern Kentucky University Foundation Board of Directors and the School Board at Covington Catholic High School. She has also served on the Boards of Catholic Charities and the Marydale Retreat Center.

Through the years, Dennis and Joyce have cultivated a legacy that has benefitted many businesses, educational institutions and charitable organizations while also raising three children, Traci, Tony and Toby. They also enjoy the company of their five grandchildren.

The Northern Kentuckian of the Year luncheon, now in its 14th year, is a great way for the community to recognize individuals who have made significant contributions to their careers, families, and the Northern Kentucky area. The luncheon always proves to be well attended by the area’s corporate community

as well as friends and alumni of Covington Catholic. All proceeds from the luncheon will benefit the CCH Tuition Assistance Program.

All alumni and friends of CovCath are encouraged to attend the luncheon to express our community’s appreciation to Dennis and Joyce Griffin for all of their good works.

The Hall of Fame Induction Ceremony for Covington Catholic was held on Wednesday, January 27, 2010 at The Gardens of Park Hills.

Over 230 friends, past Hall of Fame honorees, alumni and family attended this most distinguished event. Jeff Piecoro, Fox Sports Net Ohio, was the Master of Ceremonies. Each inductee spoke a few words about their experiences at CCH. The featured speaker was News 5 Executive Sports Producer, George Vogel. This year’s inductees were:

Mark Pfeiffer – 1969 - Football – Mark was a punter and tight-end on the 1st football team. He held the record for the highest punting average of 35.4 yards until it was broken in 1984. Mark received the team MVP award in both 1967 & 1968. Mark was also the 1st CCH football player to receive an athletic grant, earning a football scholarship to XU.

Chris Fischer – 1982-Soccer – Chris was a three year varsity letterman who started in both his junior and senior years. He was one of the first “touch” players at Covington Catholic in that he possessed the finesse with which so many CCH players today are credited. He could easily receive a ball and then make that nice pass to a forward. These skills allowed him to set the school record for assists, a record which was not broken until the 2009 season.

Jim Danneman – 1991 - Baseball – During his senior year, Jim led the team in numerous offensive categories. In addition to his .418 batting average, Jim had 52 hits (the first CCH player to have 50 or more in a season) including 12 doubles and 6 triples. He knocked in 32 runs, scored 41 and had 21 stolen bases. Jim was 1st team all-region, an honorable mention all-state player, and regarded as one of the best defensive outfielders in the area. The baseball team’s record for his two varsity seasons was 53-17.

Brad Knueven – 1999 - Swimming – As a junior, Brad won the individual state championship in the 100 breaststroke and was a member of the 200 medley and 400 free relay that won the championship, while leading the team to a third place finish. In his senior year, Brad won two more individual state championships (200 individual medley (IM) and 100 breaststroke) both setting new state records at the time, and he anchored the winning 400 free relay team, leading the team to a state-runner-up finish. For his efforts he received the state’s Outstanding Swimmer Award. His time of 1:49.26 in the 200 IM still stands as the state record.

Bob Morris – 1976 - Contributor – Bob has been involved with the CCH football program since his high school days when he served as a statistician for Coach Ray. After graduating, he came back and has remained on the staff for the last 33 years. During those years, he has been an invaluable volunteer to the program through a variety of services to the team. Bob was also instrumental in getting the CCH Jr. High Football Program started three years ago. He currently serves as President for the team and is responsible for organizing team activities, ordering and maintaining equipment, and supervising home games.

1 9 7 1 Tom Lohre recently finished a family

portrait that took one and half years to complete. This family portrait was the culmination of four years of learning how to paint small figures. Tom is also working on art, film and a book about his sail across the North Atlantic which he expects to complete in the Fall of 2010.

1 9 7 5 Mike Sutton was recently named

to the list of Top 100 Lawyers in Cincy Magazine.

1 9 8 8 Dan Moening is currently seeking

the office of Judge Executive of Kenton County. Dan is married with 2 children and resides in Independence.

1 9 9 1 Jim Danneman and his wife Holly

welcomed Jonathan Thomas into the world November 12th . The baby weighed 8 lbs 11oz and was 20 ½ inches long.

Andrew Eckerle was recently featured in an article in the March 2010 issue of “Inside Your Town”. He is in his first year of teaching art at Highlands High School, after staying home and raising his five children the past eight years. Two years of that time span were spent living in Africa while his wife worked in an HIV pediatric clinic in Botswana. While in Botswana, Eckerle enjoyed taking photos. His photography will be on display at Greenwich Gallery in East Walnut Hills this summer and also at Thomas More College in September. In the article, he referenced Tim Haders, current art teacher at Cov Cath, as the reason he became an art teacher.

1 9 9 4 Luke Bogner and his new bride Jamie

were married November 4th. Luke’s twin brother, Drew, also Class of 1994, was his best man. Luke and Jamie live in Walton.

1 9 9 7 Ryan Hackman is currently stationed

at Pearl Harbor as a submarine tactics instructor. Prior to this assignment he completed sea duty on the USS Oklahoma City. He and his wife are enjoying life in Hawaii with the newest member of their family, Anna, who was born on August 1st. As far as he knows they will be stationed there through the end of the year. Then he hopes to transition back to civilian life in the Cincinnati area.

Covington Catholic night at Florence Freedom Park

Wednesday June 2nd, 2010

Save the date for an evening of fun, good baseball and great company and get your own Colonel bobble head! Covington Catholic will be hosting the first CCH night at Florence Freedom Park on June 2nd when the Florence Freedom face off against the Oakland County Cruisers. A section of seats will be reserved for the CCH community so that friends and family of Covington Catholic can sit together. Be sure to participate in the student and alumni challenges in between innings. Ticket packages will be available for families and couples. With the purchase of a ticket package, you will receive a CCH Colonel bobble head. Tickets can be purchased now by going to www.florencefreedom.com and clicking on the tab, “tickets”. In the drop down box, click school days. When the new screen appears, select the Covington Catholic icon which will lead you to the page where you can purchase tickets directly. It will be a fun and rambunctious evening for everyone! Proceeds from this fundraiser will benefit the renovation of the recently acquired church building. Disney Marathon at Disney World in Lake Buena Vista, Florida. The race officially began with a temperature of 28 degrees at 5:40 AM and had over 24,000 runners registered. According to the Disney Marathon statistics, Kevin finished 981 out of 24,000…pretty good for his first marathon, especially considering the pulled quad muscle he experienced during the 21st mile.

Mike Listerman was named a national finalist for “Coach of the Year” during the National High School Athletic Coaches Association (NHSACA) convention this past summer. Mr. Listerman teaches Math and is the head coach of the basketball program at Cov Cath. Mr. Listerman has been a part of the faculty since 1989.

Alene Mosko welcomed her first grandchild, Finn Cullen Bailey, born to her daughter Lauren on November 30th. Ms. Mosko teaches English and is the drama coordinator as well as the spirit club moderator.

Dr. Jim Swartz was recently featured in the Thomas More Fall 2009 newsletter called “Moreover”. Dr. Swartz has been teaching at Thomas More for 30 years. He has taught part time at UC, NKU and has taught Computer Science & Computer Programming at Cov Cath since 2007.

estate license and is now licensed with Huff Realty in their Florence office.

2 0 0 3 Nick Eilerman will be the assistant

director on his first Broadway show “Looped”. It’s a new comedy starring Valerie Harper (most people remember her as Rhoda from Mary Tyler Moore). Rehearsals began in January and the show opened March 14th at the Lyceum Theater. After graduating from CovCath, Nick went to Webster Conservatory and subsequently began working at theaters around the country, from LA to Chicago, New York, Florida and everywhere in between. Be sure to check it out if you are in New York City.

2 0 0 5 Tyler Pittman was married January 2nd to Erin Otte ’06 of Notre Dame Academy at Blessed Sacrament Church in Ft. Mitchell. Other graduates in the wedding included best man Eric Chase ’05, Alex Rymarquis ’05, and Max Heidrich ’05.

2 0 0 6 Alex Frommeyer was recently

featured in UofL Today about a new company that he and four of his fellow UofL J.B. Speed School of Engineering classmates have begun while enrolled at U of L. Their company, “Ingen” is a technology firm that specializes in technology and product development. Its services include patent searching, intellectual property development, and prototyping and product design. Alex is set to graduate from UofL in May 2011.

Danny Noll was recently named to the 2010 ESPN Magazine Academic All-District Basketball Team for his achievements on the basketball court and in the classroom. Noll was selected to the District 4 College Division First Team by the College of Sports Information Directors of America for the 2009-2010 basketball season. He has maintained a 3.80 GPA at Centre College and is majoring in Economics. He has started

A�Spirit�That�Will�Not�DieRecently we received an email from Sam Cahill, ‘07 who wanted to pass on the news of what he heard on Kentucky Sports Radio today about our student cheering section. Here’s what the commentator had to say - “First off, the Cov Cath crowd is probably having more fun than any crowd in the nation right now, college teams included. After starting off the varsity game with a sing and dance along to Miley Cryus’ “Party in the USA” they didn’t stop the rest of the way. We need to

box them up and ship them all to the Erupption Zone. Stop by and check out the Cov Cath crowd if you get a chance. They bring the ridiculousness that KSR fans tend to love.”

Sam’s comments were “I like to see that the students are coming out in full force and getting peoples’ attention again. Please let the seniors know that they are doing a good job and to keep up the good work. This is what we as alumni like to see.”

all of Centre’s 13 games this season and is currently ranked 13th in the conference in scoring with 244 points and is 10th in field goal percentage at 41.8. Danny was also selected as a finalist for the Jostens Trophy, which is a national award that was created by the Rotary Club. This award takes into account basketball ability, academic prowess and community service. The award honors the most outstanding men’s and women’s Division III basketball players of the year. Nick Stacy was awarded the Judith G. Clabes award from the University of Kentucky College of Communications and Information Systems for his exceptional understanding of and commitment to the importance of first amendment advocacy of principles in the professional and civic life of the working journalist, and of the vital relationship of these principles in the preservation of democracy. Nick, who is a senior broadcast journalism student, is looking to pursue a career in the field of sports broadcasting. After graduation, Nick will be working for UK in Africa for two months teaching college students in the area of broadcasting and journalism.

Thomas Vollmar graduated from basic training at Lackland Air Force Base, San Antonio, Texas in 2007. The following year he went to Airborne school and this past summer went through a Leader’s Training course. Thomas will graduate this spring from the University of Louisville and continue on with Officer Training at the Army Cavalry School at Fort Knox.

Four Students Named As National Merit Finalists

Kevin Crush, Christian Gerwe, James Roebker and Matthew Smith, seniors at Covington Catholic High School, have been named finalists in the National Merit Scholarship competition. Kevin, Christian, James and Matthew are among only 16,000 students nationwide chosen from a pool of 1.5 million entrants as finalists. The finalists are those with the highest PSAT test scores in critical reading, math and writing skills. “These are truly dedicated and talented students,” said Jason Mott, Covington Catholic guidance counselor. The students are now eligible to receive various college scholarships ranging from a $2,500 National Merit Scholarship to corporate and college-sponsored awards of various amounts, which will be awarded March through June 2010.

“Any recognition and scholarship opportunities awarded to them as a result of being named National Merit finalists are well-deserved,” Mott said.

1 9 6 0 – Golden Colonels: A stag gathering to cel-ebrate your survival 50 years thereafter is scheduled for Friday, June 18th, 2010 in the CCH cafeteria beginning with libations and snacks @ 4:30 PM. 28th Annual Alumni Golf Outing Summit Hills Country Club Friday, Sept. 3, 2010

For the first time in the history of the golf outing, we SOLD OUT both the morning and the afternoon last year. Therefore

we are starting early to get the word out and are now accepting reservations for the 2010 golf outing. Get your

four-man team together for an 18-hole scramble. The morning and afternoon tournament are each limited to the first

144 paid entries. Your foursome is not officially reserved until we receive full payment for the entire team. This year

we will be increasing the price to golf by $25. This increase in price is the first in four years. Entry fee includes 18

holes of golf, a cart, one mulligan, one grand raffle chance, lunch, canned beer, dinner, soft drinks, door-prizes and

awards. We are currently seeking sponsors for the outing and are always looking for prizes.
