Shopping Tips

Submitted by DCM Kristen Bauer

Jalan Surabaya: Caveat emptor as some of the

antiques are not that old and the starting price can be ten times too high but still the "go to" place to hunt for traditional coconut graters, vintage cheque writing machines and other collectibles.

Gem Market: Some people find it too smoky and crowded but there are good bargains on pearls and one could browse for hours looking for the perfect picture agate and other shiny objects.

Alun Alun: A tad pricey but a nice "one stop shop" for batik products and Indonesian handicrafts.

Bead Lady/Ibu Ekti: The copies of African trade beads made from recycled light bulbs and other glass and sourced from specialist villages in East Java are fascinating. Buy individual beads, design your own jewelry or ask Ibu Ekti for help. Be sure to call ahead to make sure she is in. Very reasonable prices.

Djody Art & Curio: Extensive selection of items on

Jalan Kebun Sirih Timur, many apparently from the owner's private collection. Tung's most promising source of vintage water buffalo paintings.

G&B Guitars/Pak Haryo Sasongko: The company is based in Jogjakarta but the founder, Pak Haryo, lives in Menteng Dalam and can be visited there. Beautiful hand painted batik guitars in both Fender Strat and Gibson-style models. Buy a traditional design or customize your own.

Beauty Recommendation

Ziza Beauty Bar https://instagram.com/zizabeautybar/

Submitted by Lynn Butkiewitcz, a community member

Located in Dharmawangsa Square, Ziza Beauty Bar is a reliable and clean salon to get a manicure, pedicure and other beauty services. They sterilize their equipment using machines from Japan and have a wide range of polishes, from OPI to designer brands like Chanel and Louboutin. You sit in massage chairs while they work - a definite plus! Everyone who works there is also friendly and speaks enough English.

Know your AED! You may have noticed around your workplace, a big white box labelled AED. AED stands for Automat-ed External Defibrillator. An AED is a portable electronic device that automatically diagnosis cardiac arrhythmias associated with cardiac arrest (heart attack). If indicated, the AED can deliver an electric shock (defibrillation) which can hopefully revert a life threatening cardiac arrhythmia back to an effective rhythm.

The AED is designed to allow a volunteer responder without any necessary medical background to effectively use the device. The AED provides simple English commands on how to apply the defibrillation pads to a person who is not breathing. In the US Embassy buildings, the AED is kept in a protective white box on the wall. When the box is opened, or if the defibrillator is removed an alarm will sound. This alarm alerts the people around you that there is a potentially life threatening situation. The AED is used in conjunction with cardiac compressions. The Health Unit will be facilitating Basic Life Support short courses for AMER and FSN employees in the near future (Please keep an eye on the Cicak for dates). This course will provide you with how to assess whether a person requires

resuscitation, how to perform effective cardiac compressions and how apply the AED. If you are unsure if a situation requires an AED, do not hesitate to bring it to the scene of the life threatening incident. There is no consequence for sounding the alarm by opening the AED box. It is better to have it ready just in case! If you have used the AED (or its contents) please make sure you advise the Health Unit so that it can be checked and replaced for future use. It is important you know where the nearest AED to your work station is located. If you cannot locate the nearest AED, please contact the Health Unit.

What’s happening? Keeping you up to date with health promotion activities!

you plan on hiring is not on “Black List”

EXCELLENT PEMBANTU AVAILABLE END OF JULY Ibu Neneng will be available to clean, wash/iron clothes at the end of July 2015. She has been my housekeeper for almost three years. Prior to her I have gone through trials with others that just didn’t work out well. Ibu Neneng has been the best by far. She is extremely reliable, diligent and trustworthy. She works full-time, Monday – Friday and does all my grocery shopping once a week. She does drop-off/pick-up of my dry cleaning; washes and irons my clothes. She speaks English very well. She prefers to be a live-out housekeeper. She has worked for US Embassy families for the last 15 years. She has been trained by health unit to properly sanitize and prepare food. When asked on occasion, she will cook. Please call ibu Neneng directly at 082110366894. (7/30) Excellent Pembantu Available Now Ibu Tati has been working for us for the past year. She has many years of experience working for U.S. Embassy families and I often refer to her as the “Executive Pembantu” since she came to us already trained and able to anticipate needs that I didn't even know that I had! She has a set system for cleaning and doesn't like to sit idle. She is extremely professional, trustworthy, always on time, and is very efficient. She is also very respectful of our family’s privacy. She has undergone the Food Safety training through the Health Unit several times and is already knowledgeable on how to prepare fruits and vegetables safely. She knows how to cook Indonesian food, some American dishes, and is able to go grocery shopping. She assists with coordinating household repairs. She is extremely proficient at ironing. Ibu Tati has a good working knowledge of English cooking and cleaning terms, but conversational English may be difficult for her. She is very sweet will be missed dearly. Ibu Tati prefers to work full-time in the Menteng or central region (ie. Pussat/Shangri-La) For more information please contact Abdul Aziz at: [email protected] or you can call her directly at: 08999825838. (7/30) Excellent, Professional Driver Available Now Pak Adhi has worked with us for just the past 3 months, before I had to leave post suddenly. In that time, he has undergone the security clearance and has been an extremely reliable driver. He is always on time or early and keeps the car looking great. (continues to next column)

Classifieds He came to us after working for another expat family and is a very cautious driver, quickly learning how to navigate the Jakarta roads in our left-hand drive Subaru. His English is fair, but he is a very enthusiastic learner and a very kind person. He has worked in the Jakarta Pussat region. For more information, you may email Abdulaziz at: [email protected] or contact Pak Adhi directly at: 081296796173. (7/30) Pembantu/Nanny Needed I am seeking a full time pembantu (live-in or live-out) whose main responsibilities will include general housekeeping, laundry, cooking and grocery shopping. Occasionally, I would like the pembantu to also have the ability to babysit for my 3 and 6 year old children. We live in the Shangri-la Residences in central Jakarta and need someone as soon as possible. The hours would be Monday through Saturday 8:30am - 7:00pm (Saturday hours are negotiable). Salary, bonuses and medical benefits are competitive. Please contact Erica at 0812 8790 0509 if interested. (7/30) Part-time housekeeper available After spending a couple of years with us in the USA, our housekeeper, Dewi Novianti, has returned to Jakarta and is looking for part-time housekeeping work starting immediately. We have known Dewi for over 6 years as she was also our housekeeper when we were posted in Jakarta for 3 years and she agreed to spend some time with us in the USA the last couple of years. Dewi is smart, efficient, clean, honest, and speaks great English. Her duties included cleaning the house, grocery shopping, laundry, and running errands. She is proactive and has had plenty of experience liaising with Embassy GSO and maintenance, as well as the local building maintenance personnel. Please contact Dewi at 081316500638 or [email protected]. Should you have any questions, please e-mail me at [email protected] (7/30) For SALE: 2006 Toyota Kijang Innova - Great family minivan available immediately. Excellent condition, silver, 7 seater with seat belts throughout, automatic transmission, air bags, AC vents in front/middle & back, radio, DVD player & reading lamps. Vehicle has been maintained at Toyota dealership and driven by same driver throughout. @ 70,000 miles - Price: for best offer. Please contact [email protected]. (8/6)

‘I've been having second thoughts about quitting my job.’ How does the speaker feel about

quitting her job?

a) The speaker is firm about her decision.

b) The speaker has doubts about her decision.

The answer is b). To have second thoughts means to begin to have doubts; to question and re-examine a decision. Ex: I know we’ve already made the commitment to buy that house, but now I’m having second thoughts about it. Are you sure it was a wise decision? On second thought is used when you want to change a decision you have made. Ex: I'd like a cup of tea, please.

Actually, on second thought, I'll have a beer.

Which sentence is correct? a) Although his hard work, he failed the exam. b) Despite his hard work, he failed the exam. c) a & b

The answer is b). Don't use although or though in front of a noun phrase. Don't say, for example, 'Although his

poor health, he was always cheerful'.

Say: In spite of his poor health, he was always cheerful.

Or: Despite his poor health, he was always cheerful.
