Dear Sisters,

Happy Valentine’s to all my wonder-ful sisters, may you get the attention you deserve from someone who loves you. I used to hate Valentine’s Day when I was single

and not dating. It seemed the whole world had someone except me and I was forced to be on the outside look-ing in. Then I found Wes and I didn’t hate it any more. But since those early days, I have found that we put the emphasis on the wrong thing. Valentine’s Day is a day of love and appreciation, that should be from all those who love us and who we love. Why restrict it to only one person?

Since becoming a Beta Sigma Phi sister, I learned that there is no reason to have only one best friend, I learned that the more people you open your heart to, the more room you have. So let’s pledge to change our perspec-tive on Valentine’s Day and throw open the doors to all those we love and who love us. If you know of some-one who could use attention at this time of year, send a card or give them a call, ask them to lunch, give them chocolate. Make it a game each year to find more people to spread your Valentine’s attention to. Buy children’s Valentine cards and give them to everyone, watch them smile.

Isn’t everything in life kind of like this? The more we look, the more we find, the more we give, the more we get. I’ll be giving my Secret Sister a gift of course, my husband, absolutely, but I’ll also be noticing others and I hope I don’t leave anyone out who needs a little lift. Just because we are not in a relationship on Valentine’s Day doesn’t mean we aren’t loved by many. Let’s take the time to count all those who love us and count them among our Valentine sweethearts this year.

Take this opportunity to spread a little love a little farther than you usually do on Valentine’s Day, you’ll be glad you did. Besides, how bad can a holiday be that’s so wrapped up in chocolate? Oh yeah, and conversation hearts too, I love those.

What Beta Sigma Phi Means to Me By: Theresa Smith Olsen Nebraska Xi Gamma Phi, Blair

Nebraska Theta Master, Aurora member June Marquardt Smith (left) with her beaming daughter Theresa Olsen of Nebraska Xi Gamma Phi, Blair, at Theresa’s wedding.

My mom, June Marquardt Smith, member of Nebraska Theta Master, Aurora was by my side when I married the love of my life recently. Behind us were two flower arrange-ments commemorating our deceased fa-thers. Because we both were raised in small rural towns in Nebraska, my husband and I decided to move to a small rural town near Omaha. At age 50, I was a new bride starting a new life. When I contacted the local inte-rior designer to help decorate our new home, she invited me to a Beta Sigma Phi meet-ing. I knew my mom had belonged to a fun chapter for years, and thought it would be a good opportunity to meet new friends in our new town. I soon joined Nebraska Xi Gamma Phi, Blair.

My mom celebrated her 80th birthday January of 2009. When she was but 20, she moved to a new rural town after meet-ing my dad on a blind dated, to start her new life as a farm wife. In 1950, she pledged to her Beta Sigma Phi group to so-cialize with area women and give back to her new community. Fifty eight years later, she still enjoys

the support of the amazing friendships devel-oped, the fun, educational meetings, dinners and social events each month, and how they link into their hometown. They were there to support her through four new babies, eight grandchildren, three great-grandchildren, and my dad’s death.

It’s true that women need the sweetness of friendship, and the fulfillment of helping oth-ers. I’m so grateful for the wonderful women I’ve met this past year in my local chapter. I’m also grateful for the group that continues to support my mother’s life hours away, and for the legacy of the friendship network.

The members of North Carolina Gam-ma Psi, Fayetteville, led by a very

enthusiastic Heidi Berryhill, have started a new chapter on the campus of a local university. This is Fayetteville’s first col-lege chapter. North Carolina Kappa Rho, Fayetteville has been growing in leaps and bounds since it was formed last summer.

Heidi requested the Friendly Venture packet with college posters to share Beta Sigma Phi with the young women on cam-pus. They participated in the rush week activities held on campus and soon had ten eager pledges to start this new group. Heidi shares that these young women were seeking out the values that every Beta Sigma Phi member upholds and has enjoyed being their advisor.

FAYETTEVILLE, NORTH CAROLINA has a New College Chapter Rah! Rah!

Shown here are the ten original pledges of North Carolina Kappa Rho, Fayetteville. The chapter has since grown to eighteen members.

Wilma Flagg, of New Jersey Lau-reate Nu, Toms River shares her excitement with International about their three new pledges. Wilma firmly believes that a chapter should never get too settled to add new pledges. No matter what age, every new member adds their own special qualities to a chapter. You go, girl!

Laureate Nu welcomed the new pledg-es and they are ready to hold the torch of friendship high and begin new friend-ships with the entire chapter. And they are finding members within their own families - two of the girls just happen to be daughters of the chapter president.

Laureate Nu will continue to reach out to younger women in hopes of reactivating the Ritual of Jew-els chapter they progressed from many years ago. They hope to share the great understanding of

Beta Sigma Phi that each have come to cherish. “Life, Learning, and Friendship have no age lim-its. These attributes endure because we are all seeking the Good, the True, and the Beautiful in our lives, no matter what the age happens to be,” says Wilma

Texas Preceptor Eta Chi, Houston is so ex-cited about its new website! Envisioned and implemented by members Connie Noble, Lauren Nguyen and Trudi Spring, this site provides the chapter members with everything they need to know about the sorority calendar, their sisters, and general information about Beta Sigma Phi. Opening the website we hear Cyndi Lauper singing “Girls Just Wanna Have Fun” and see a bright pink background with a yellow rose in the design and photos of the members. “The home

page includes our goal and mission statement. There are tabs similar to our yearbook with the same information and an option to view the data in a pdf file,” writes Connie Noble. “It has proven to be a handy resource and everyone is enjoying using the site to look up data and to be reminded by Cyndi that we do have fun. We love being a part of Beta Sigma Phi and the friendships we’ve made since 1994 when our chapter was conceived!” Go to www.houston-sisters.org and check it out for yourself!

Texas Laureate Theta Ome-ga, Dallas member Lucylee Lively (seated), surrounded by the Dallas, Texas City Coun-cil Beta Sigma Phi members. The event was a stunning success.

The Dallas, Texas City Council had a rush entitled “This is Your Life Beta Sigma Phi”, with Texas Laureate Theta Omega, Dallas member Lucylee Lively represent-ing Beta Sigma Phi. Members of all the chapters asked questions about the history of sorority and she answered all the questions (without any notes)!

The attendees must have liked the Q&A, because a Friendly Venture chapter was formed with 13 pledges, Texas Beta Lambda Omicron, Dallas. Each of the represented chapters acquired an additional pledge.

Invited guests to the mega-success-ful rush party hosted by the Dal-las, Texas City Council.

Our Excellent EnvoysSince 1983, our Envoys have been one of the most valuable resources of sorority. It goes without saying

they are also a lot of help. Though these men are behind the scenes, but they are always given their due by the individual chapters. The Torch would now like to take the time to salute our Envoys. What would we do without them?

Tennessee Laureate Alpha Theta, Knoxville traveled to a nearby attraction for their Christ-mas weekend and while there, took an oppor-tunity to conduct the Envoy Ritual for Dennis O’ Toole (second row, on right), husband of Lau-reate Alpha Theta member Dorothy O’ Toole. There to welcome him were the veteran Envoys, (front right) Johnny Brown, husband of Lillie Mae Brown, (second row, from left) Bob Tickle, husband of Elizabeth Tickle and honoree Den-nis. (Back row) John Schmidt and Vic Kamin-sky, husbands of Donna Schmidt and Barbara Kaminsky.”Our Envoys work right alongside us, always helping out regardless of who is hosting an event,” writes Laureate Alpha Theta member Faye Duncan. “We appreciate them so much!”

The sisters of Texas Xi Al-pha Delta Zeta, Universal City surprised their hus-bands with an Envoy Ritual, starting off the new year in style. The Ritual was held during the chapter’s annual progressive dinner. “The husbands were so pleased to be recognized for their supportive role in sorority,” writes Xi Alpha Delta Zeta sister Rosemary Wallace. “They even wore their new pins to the Valentine Ball.”

10 February 2010 The Torch

Preceptor Alpha Phi of Manchester, Tennessee proudly presents their 10 new Envoys. “Here they are, along with two long standing Envoys,” writes Preceptor Alpha Phi mem-ber Catherine Turner. “There are nine husbands and one son. We treated all of them to a delicious brunch after the Ritual.”

Members of Alabama Laureate Eta, Gad-sden mixed it up a little bit with an about face. At a celebration for their beloved En-voys, these mustachioed sisters had the time of their lives, but were relieved when they were able to remove the hirsute appendages.

We have a double Envoy in Beta Sigma Phi! Perhaps not the first, and surely not the last, but the lucky guy is Dan Fox, husband of Arlene Fox of Texas Preceptor Iota Iota, Houston. “He has been an Envoy of Online Theta for around eight years,” says Arlene. “Don’t know what either chapter would do without him.” Dan has long known how important Beta Sigma Phi is to Ar-lene. The point was hammered home after he saw the outpouring of help from sisters after Arlene suffered a heart attack and subsequent surgery. We would like to congratulate Dan - we know both chapters will keep him busy!

Florida Xi Lambda Psi, Englewood has had a busy season with a multitude of Rituals hon-oring their sisters. But an especially enjoyable one was the Envoy Ritual, held for (from left) Mike Mossman, Angelo Bianchi and Don Sch-neeman, husbands of Donna Mossman and Florence Schneeman. (Dorothy Bianchi, the wonderful wife of Angelo, is third from the left.)The sisters are so appreciative of their Envoys, telling the Torch that the men all work togeth-er to help whenever they are needed. Sounds like they are keepers!

W e are so proud this year to have as our judge James Burton, who is said to be one of the greatest guitar

players that has ever lived, by no less an authority than Rolling Stone magazine.

When he was inducted into the Rock and Roll of Fame in 2001, he was inducted by Keith Richards of the Rolling Stones, who counts himself one of James’ biggest fans. His work with artists reads like a “who’s who” of contem-porary musicians, starting with Ricky Nelson and continu-ing on with such artists as Elvis Presley, John Denver, Emmy Lou Harris, Roy Orbison and Elvis Costello. The stellar list continues with the likes of Johnny Cash, Merle Haggard, Joni Mitchell and Frank Sinatra.

After having to turn the “King” down when he was asked to perform on a television special in 1968, James finally joined Presley’s TCB Band and backed Presley from 1969 until Presley’s death in 1977. In many of Presley’s live re-cordings or television specials, one can hear Elvis exclaim, “Play it James!”, signaling James to perform one of his virtuoso guitar solos.

The most identifiable guitar licks in songs such as “Hello, Mary Lou,” by Ricky Nelson, and “Susie Q” by Lou Hawkins are all original Burton sounds. Elvis Costello spoke about James’ genius guitar prowess in January of this year when he spoke of their long history of touring together.

In 1987, he was a prominent part of the acclaimed special, “Roy Orbison and Friends, A Black and White Night,” playing lead guitar. Musicians who joined him to play and sing along included Bruce Springsteen, Jackson Browne and Bonnie Raitt. The special is considered one of the most

popular musical programs ever to air, and is still shown regularly on PBS stations. Springsteen said recently that this was one, if not the biggest, highlight of his long career, getting to play alongside Roy Orbison and James. In 1990, James moved back to his hometown of Shreveport. He is still very much in demand and one can only wonder how he ever found a display case big enough to hold all his awards. But what James is most proud of is his annual James Burton Inter-national Guitar Festival, which started in 2005, to raise money for his charitable foundation. The festival is held in Shreveport, and the foundation is dedicated to providing scholarships and musical instruments to children and young adults.

W yoming Xi Alpha Omi-cron, Wright really knows how to throw a party. Ev-

ery year they have a fine catered meal for their Valentine’s Day dinner. But a slight change in plans made for a a spe-cial night when member Sharilyn Both-well hosted the dinner. “With the help of my dear friend and chapter sister Renae Steele, I cooked a very special Italian dinner,” says Sharilyn. The items on the menu were matched with ac-

tual dictionary definitions for their three course meal, example – fork and paying up. Every member was to choose items for their three course meal, using the coded words. “Some sisters were really surprised when they received their first course, some had spaghetti sauce and no noodles and no utensils to eat with,” says Sharilyn. “After all the courses were served, the members had a chance to sample everything on the menu, thus eating appropriately at last.” The menu

Cupid’s Day CelebrationsFlorida Preceptor Alpha Mu, St. Pe-tersburg member Martha Mohn received a great honor at the 51st Queen of Hearts Ball when she was anointed queen. The ball committee chooses a local citizen who has been active in the community with cultural and civic duties. Martha was nomi-nated by her chapter for the many proj-ects she has been involved with, such as a center to improve the quality of life for the mentally ill, and many child-centered charities. “All of this work and much more has been done in the name of sorority,” says Preceptor Alpha Mu member Virginia Battaglia. “And it is of note that this ball has raised well over a million dollars which it has distributed to needy charities.”

The Santa Cruz, Cali-fornia Area Council celebrated the romantic holiday of Valentine’s Day with their husbands, who demanded they get equal photo opportunity. Wyoming Epsilon Master, Casper members found themselves in a bit of an enjoyable pre-dicament at their Valentine’s Day party. Seems the vote was a tie, and two were crowned queen. The two lucky sisters, Lily May Bevers and Catherine Kercher were surprised when member and mistress of ceremonies Janet Hilde summoned them to the front where they had a dual crown ceremony.”Lily May pledged in 1980 and Catherine in 1984 sponsored by friends who had been active in sorority for many years,” says Epsilon Master member Rose Wallace. ”It is never too late to become a member of our sorority, and our two queens vouch for that. They were each presented a tiara, a certificate and hugs of love from all our members!”

The past sorority year was a happy one for Nevada Delta Master, Las Vegas. In addi-tion to having a great time with all their ac-tivities they have also been blessed with three members who are 90+ in their chapter! These treasured members are (from left) Pauline Ray, Frances Holda and Edna Bran. “We held a birthday party for Pauline in September, followed by one in December for Fran, and then one in January for Edna,” Delta Master member Lorraine Farrell tells the Torch. “We honored all three of them as our Valentine Queens, which was cause for further celebra-tion. They are true sorority sisters represent-ing all the best of Beta Sigma Phi. We wish them continued health and happiness.”

Texas Laureate Gamma Pi, Sequin celebrated Valentine’s Day with a brunch at a lo-cal university to honor their Valentine Queen, Betty Gib-bons (in white dress). A “Hat’s Off to Valentines” theme was implemented which made for a welcome change from the ubiquitous hearts and cupids. One of the chapter’s most crafty members, Mickey Cavin (not pictured) decorated all the lovely hats for her sisters.

The Albuquerque, New Mexico City Coun-cil attended an instructive and exhilarating

workshop at a local dance studio. With more than 70 members in attendance, the studio was packed to capac-ity. “We had Cissy King, of “The Lawrence Welk Show,” as our instructor,” says New Mexico Xi Alpha Omicron, Albuquerque member Anne Marie Vidal, adding what an honor it was to be taught by one of America’s favorite dancers.

Cissy King grew up in Albuquerque, New Mexico. Her website says, “You could say that she began her “show biz” career at the age of 2 1/2 when she toddled into her first dancing class, but she didn’t get serious until she was 3.” When she was fourteen, Cissy teamed with her brother, John, to win three consecutive United States National Cham-pionships, including The North American International Dance Championship in New York City. That year, Dance Magazine named John & Cissy King Ballroom Dance Couple of the Year. In her freshman year at The University of New Mexico, Cissy was a competitive diver and gymnast and cheerleader. fate intervened when Cissy met the acquaintance of former Mouseketeer Bobby Burgess, who was now a regular on the

“The Lawrence Welk Show.” After asking her to audition, Cissy appeared as a guest and was immediately asked to join the Lawrence Welk musical family in 1967. In her twelve years of weekly performances

on the program, Cissy established herself as a multi-faceted talent and has been a fan favorite for many decades.

Cissy also received The Dance Masters of America Award for “Outstanding Contribution to Dance”. Other recipients of this award have been Fred Astaire, Eleanor Powell, and Bob Fosse.

Beta Sigma Phi has had a connection with Lawrence Welk almost since the beginning of

our wonderful organization. In 1933, to help fund their first service project, Kansas Alpha, Abilene planned a dance, entering into many discussions as to what band would be hired to play. Seems the chapter was torn whether to pay Welk’s astronomical fee of $70 for his “champagne music.” The decision turned out to be a smart one, according to Kansas Alpha, Abilene member Helen Pepper. “We made the unbelievable amount of $300,” remembered Helen. “It was as though people thought it was the last dance they would ever attend.”

There are many videos of Sissy and partner Bobby Burgess on utube. They are quite entertaining!

When Janet Hamm of Florida Alpha Chi Master, Fort Myers experienced the loss of a dear friend, her chapter members came up with a plan. A friend men-tioned that “Janet needed a puppy to lift her spirits.” Her sorority sisters were thrilled when they heard the good news that a perfect puppy named Skipper was available and decided to surprise Janet with a “puppy

shower” the next meeting. “When Janet saw the gifts arrive, she assumed they were Secret Sister gifts, so we really caught her by surprise when she sat down and began opening the gifts brought for Skipper. We enjoyed passing Skipper from sister to sister and get-ting kisses and cuddles galore,” says Alpha Chi Master member Marsha Smith

The Mansfield, Ohio City Coun-cil marched in the Bicentennial Parade during the city’s 200th birthday celebration. Represen-tatives from the six chapters of Beta Sigma Phi in Mansfield par-ticipated either by riding on the float, or by walking alongside the float and passing out candy to the children along the parade route. In other Ohio news, Ohio Xi Chi, Greenville recently celebrated their 1000th meeting. Congratula-tions!

The Texas Xi Alpha Gamma Lambda, Palestine chapter’s August meeting was a summer picnic to remember. Member Carolyn Riley, gave a program about the uses and significance of aprons throughout history. Following the program each sister sported a variety of aprons for their newest member’s Pledge Ritual and a Precep-tor Ritual for another member. After the Rituals, still in their aprons, they were treated to an outdoors picnic complete with all homemade food including fried chicken, salads, breads, tea and lemonade.

Ontario Preceptor Beta Rho, Kitchener celebrated their 500th meeting January 12, 2009 complete with ti-aras for their heads and cupcakes for their sweet tooths. They toasted each other with assorted beverages and wishes for many more happy years in sorority. “We are very proud of our 500 meeting history and anxious to share,” says Preceptor Beta member Lyn Spiewak.

Sisters of Western Australia Preceptor Alpha, Perth recently completed a project of making a ‘Friendship Quilt’. It was presented to their sister Barbara Weck-man who has experienced more than her fair share of illness for several years. The quilt was made up of fourteen individual heart shapes each designed and made by the fourteen members in the chapter. On the back of the quilt was handwritten all the girl’s names

and a short message of love. The quilt was presented to Barbara during a lengthy stay in the hospital. “Barbara is very special to us,” says member Deidre Edwards.

Sisters in Pocatella, Idaho are celebrating 50 years since the Preceptor degree, the fourth degree of soror-ity, was introduced. The first Preceptor chapter was established in this city. By 1960, Beta Sigma Phi had grown to a membership of 150,000 members with 7,000 chapters in 14 countries.

Florida Xi Lambda Nu, St. Cloud recently contrib-uted several copies of “Huckleberry Finn” to a local library. The library staff was particularly grateful for the donations as the book appears on the elementary school required reading list.

The husband of Peg Streed, President of Minnesota Preceptor Pi, Coon Rapids, Ed, is very talented with the camera and computer design. He surprised the members of Preceptor Pi with not only individual yearbooks with their personalized photo on the cover, but a separate “pictorial direc-tory” telephone companion with Secret Sister information which includes each member’s information. “ We are one of the larger chapters with 23 members. We meet one day a month and one Saturday with brunch or lunch, and sometimes touring or studying histori-cal or scientific landmarks, or just for some fun activities,” writes Preceptor Pi member Kay O’Donnell-Hill.

Fleece Blankets were made by the members of Colorado Preceptor Gamma Iota, Colorado Springs to give to the homeless. The blan-kets were tied by the members and given to the director of the local soup kitchen. “With temperatures getting down to below zero, home-less people need all the warmth they can get from the blankets and knowing that people care,” says Preceptor Gamma Iota member Denise Foret.

Since 1963, February has been “American Heart Month.” Since that time, Beta Sigma Phi has been at the forefront in the battle against heart disease. “Go Red For Women,” is a movement that celebrates and unifies women, helping them to realize the power we have as we band together to wipe out heart disease and stroke. Our sisters across the world have long been involved in heart health, hold-ing fundraisers and donating their time and energy for causes that help educate citizens and eradicate the disease that is the number one killer of women.

Pennsylvania Preceptor Delta Nu, Butler members helped with the Heart Gala sponsored by neigh-boring counties, raising much needed funds for research. Nova Scotia Delta Master, Halifax was recently honored with a citation for their exemplary service to the Heart and Stroke Foundation given to outstanding volun-teers. For more than 20 years, Delta Master has been of service to the foundation. Nu-

merous other chapters have also had a heart and embraced educating women about heart disease.

As you wear red this month, remember that your participation has made a difference in how women view the importance of heart health.

The Heart of the Matter – Saving Lives

Florida Alpha Gamma Eta, Titusville members held an antique appraisal with proceeds going to the “Go Red for Women” campaign.
