2012 YEAR IN REVIEW

Welcome back Team!

In 2013 we continue what we started. We build upon the momentum of those who ran the race and set the pace before us. NAREB is excited to turn back the pages of time and give you a sneak peek into the amazing accomplishments and goals that we as a team (leadership, members, partners, affiliates, vendors, supporters, family and friends) were able to achieve.

We are proud to present the first e-zine of the year entitled “2012 A Year In Review”. Without your help none of this would have been possible. “A team wins when individuals step up”.

As I round the bend and gain momentum in the turn as your 27th President, I catch my second breath and put my head into the winds, the winds of resistance... winds of doubt... the winds of hope, and change, forever moving forward. We can see the finish line from here. Head down, setting the pace, I hear the wind in my ears. My lungs full, my heart pounds, we’re in the race for change. Our leg is almost done. Can you hear the cheers... I can. It’s me cheering you on.

Let’s keep moving forward. Let’s continue to grow. Let’s continue to do what we do best. The race is ours to win. Enjoy this issue of Cornerstone, NAREB’s best of the best.

God Speed!

Respectfully,

Real Estate Economist

LaVaughn Henry

While it is true that the economy has continued to expand moder-ately, the labor market continues to be a source of increasing frustration. After starting the year with an average of 225K jobs being creating each month during the first quarter, payroll employment growth has slowed to a third of that level during the second quarter – averaging 73K during April and May. Addition-ally, the decline in the unemploy-ment rate, which was so evident during the second half of 2011, has all but stalled this year. After starting the year at 8.3 percent, it has declined by a mere 0.1 percentage points to 8.2 percent. On net, while any improvement is welcome improvement, it remains the case that for the economy to pick up any discern-ible steam, improvement in the condition of the labor market will have to accelerate – substan-tially.Pressure continues to build from outside forces – the European Debt Crisis and slowdown in the Chinese economy – that risk having a material effect on our economic growth in the U.S. Namely, the Eurozone and China are significant trading

partners with the United States. The Eurozone alone accounts for more than 20 percent of the nation’s exports, and with China’s ever-growing middle class, which alone is already estimated to exceed 300 million, larger than the whole of the United States’ population, simultane-ous declines in their aggregate demand can negatively, and possibly significantly, reduce our GDP, hurting our labor markets further. The expectation is that this impact is likely to be muted as U.S. growth in consumer demand, representing more than 70 percent of the total U.S. economy, continues to show some strength. Finally, despite some signs of improvement, the national hous-ing market remains moribund. Data through March 2012, the S&P/Case-ShillerHome Price Indices, the leading measure of U.S. home prices, showed that all three of its headline composites ended the first quarter of 2012 at new post-crisis lows. Additionally, fore-closures remain

significantly elevated above normal levels, and the amount of shadow inventory, remains at sufficiently high enough levels to put significant down-ward pressure on prices. For there to be any significant and last-ing improvement in the residential real estate market, it will first have to be preceded by improvement in the labor market, sparking stronger growth in con-

sumer incomes and demand, and ultimately growth in housing demand.

Young Realtists® Heat Up In MiamiEditorial Excerpts by Alexandria Boone

February 23, 2012 YRD hosted its New Members’ Orientation in the hot and beautiful tropical paradise better known as Miami Florida and home of the NBA’s most talked about basketball superstar LeBron James. The air crackled with excitement and energy as NAREB’s youngest members crowded into the room and began to fill the seats. The room was a buzz with talk about the latest educational line-up and class sessions. When we spoke with various attendees, most of the talk surrounded the excitement over the new addition of Social Media, Commercial Development, REO Certification, REO Reform and Short Sales Classes.

The room erupted with applause when (YRD) Young Realtist® Division, President Gerald Dixon took the podium and announced the need to expand YRD chapters and its brand across the United States.

The Orientation was also held in the home town of NAREB’s current president Julius Cartwright in Cleveland, Ohio, on August 4, 2012. The YRD reception was well received in both cities as new members pondered their legacy within the core group of the country’s oldest African-American real estate trade association.

YRD hosted and co-sponsored along with Realogy the huge event in Cleveland. The event was held at the nationally televised Quicken Loans Sports & Entertainment Arena and “Home” of the Cleveland Cavaliers. Both events birthed new young

Realtist® relationships and facebook friendships. Later, the event was joined by the remaining members of the National Association of Real Estate Brokers, its board, body and supporters.

Last year at the onset of 2012 Mid-Winter conference, NAREB® hatched a plan to eradicate the top four silent but deadly killers of African-Americans. NAREB® set its sights on the disproportionate number of cases of African-Amer-icans affected by Heart Disease, Diabetes, Hypertension and Can-cer. The focus concentrated its efforts on education, literature, and associated resources. NAREB’s membership also introduced a new program “My Life Check”, that was sponsored by the American Heart and Stroke Association. During the event at the 2012 Mid-Winter conference, NAREB® also showed a short film

on a healthy lifestyle, hosted a health panel, and the national president spoke about the importance of increasing health awareness amongst real estate and financial industry professionals. Health Fair – Facilitated by H&W Committee and the event was hosted by The Detroit chapter (OCREBA). Participants included: local health departments; hospitals; alternative (natural) medicine reps; nutrition centers; health club reps etc. We continue to encourage local chapters to host mini health fairs during Realtist® Week activities during the month of April.

The Women’s Council of the National Association of Real Estate Brokers (WC of NAREB®) primary goal is to encourage the exchange of information and ideas pertaining to business problems that affects its members and to work in a united effort to find solutions.

We initiate and support educational programs to youth and women while also providing incentives for other programs that benefit a particular organization or club. Our mission is to assist in the formation of local chapters in providing educational tools to those communities which lack a financial base of sustaining their financial net worth.

We accomplish this by utilizing Community Outreach and providing Financial Literacy. In many of our chapters around the country, we are in schools, churches, abused shelters, community programs and anywhere educational values can be taught. The local Women’s Council chapters have had very successful financial literacy events in the community.

Our objective in what we do is to enhance learning, excite the mind and develop a desire to grow. Come grow with us and join today or start a chapter in your area.

Region XII Pays Tribute To BabersReporting by Patricia Douglas & Sherley Spears | May 26, 2012 | Fort Worth, Texas

REGION XII CONFERENCE

May 26, 2012Fort Worth, TX

You might ask yourself what or who could assemble HUD, PNC, Prime Lending, Wells Fargo and several NAREB® Regions all to gather in one place at the same time. The Regional Conference and Gala is the what and C. Donald Babers is the who. The Region XII Conference was held at the lovely Marriot Hotel and Golf Club Hotel in Fort Worth, Texas. The event was hosted by Regional VP, Harold Carter. Attendees of the conference participated in a day-longtraining which included the launching of the Homeowner’s Assurance Program. The program

was offered through a partnership between NAREB and SRP. Other topics for the conference included discussions on HUD (US Department of Housing and Urban Development) opportunities, Fair Housing, REO Brokers in today’s market, and mortgage updates. Conference presenters included HUD staff (Region 6), Realtist® Brokers, PNC Mortgage, Prime Lending and Wells Fargo. The remainder of the evening was dedicated to C. Donald Babers. Industry leaders, real estate professionals and other business professionals gathered

for a Gala honoring retiring HUD Region 6 Administrator, C. Donald Babers. The ballroom was decorated and filled with rare, fragrant and beautiful flowers representing HUD and each state in Region 6 and 7 which overlaps into Texas, Louisiana and New Mexico. Mr. Babers humbly accepted all of the various awards and special commendations presented to him throughout the course of the evening. He and his wife Sheila will retire and enjoy their grandchildren in Fort Worth. “Mr. Babers served as a conduit for HUD and as an irreplaceable

CONVENTION

2012

NAREB’s leadership team was very busy last year cultivating and developing relationships with the young and powerful. In 2012 they participated as a co-sponsor of the Democratic National Convention (DNC) “Rising Star Award’s Reception” in Charlotte, North Carolina with the Young & Powerful (Y&P). Y&P is a national organization spearheaded by a team of emerging young community leaders who are passionate about increasing political awareness and generating civic activism among young people. The Young &

Powerful is comprised of over 120,000 members. The “Call to Action Address” was presented by Congressman Danny K. Davis, U. S. House of Representatives (D-IL). In 2012, NAREB focused on building collaborative partnerships and relationships with groups comprised primarily of young professionals in an effort to bring a stronger awareness to NAREB’s grassroots community works, mission, educational and industry related business opportunities. This collaboration also created an op-portunity for NAREB® President,

Julius Cartwright to share some poignant and brief remarks. He also acknowledged Martin Lu-ther King’s Birthday and the fact that the event was held on Sun-day, January 20th, 11AM at the L’Enfant Plaza Hotel. President Cartwright also participating as special guest panelist on the Roundtable Political Forum, held Saturday, January 19th, 1PM at the prestigious Howard Univer-sity. These events were attended and supported by NAREB’s Leadership Team which included Julius Cartwright, President, Lawrence Batiste, Chairman, Donnell Spivey, VP, Donnell

Williams, 3rd VP, Andrea Cooksey, VP, Paul Lewis, PAC Chair, and Emmerick Pease, RVP. The leadership team will continue to bring awareness to the work and service NAREB® provides to communities across the nation!

BIRTH OF THE SHIBA BRAIN TRUSTReporting by Donnell Spivey | Ronald S. Cooper | Jeffrey Hicks

CONGRESSIONALBLACK CAUCUS

BRAIN TRUST2012

HISTORY WAS MADE - 2012 Congressional Black Caucus Foundation – Annual Legislative Conference Brain Trust Housing Forum. The SHIBA (State of Housing In Black America) Brain Trust was just one of the activities and events hosted by the National Association of Real Estate Brokers (NAREB) during the 2012 Congressional Black Caucus Foundation (CBCF) Annual Legislative Conference.

The legislative process is key to not only the success of our businesses and communities, but other basic and fundamental human needs that we all pursue along our journey for a better quality of life. Therefore, the Realtist® voice is also part of that process and is critical to the future of economic wealth building and ultimately, assisting more people in obtaining their own share of the American Dream.

The Brain Trust Housing Forum was received with overwhelming acceptance and

accompanied by a resounding round of applause and ended with a standing ovation. The panelists were overwhelmed with numerous positive responses, endless questions pertaining to foreclosure and homeownership.

President-Elect Donell Spivey expressed that he was particularly surprised to find such a diverse and genuinely attentive group of attendees. “There’s an essential and obvious demand by people to receive relevant and accurate information regarding housing opportunities so that they can make well-informed decisions.”

“It is evident that NAREB’s strength is in its’ creed of political advocacy for ‘Democracy in Housing’ and the championing of causes against discrimination in lending and housing policies that affect the communities which it serves,” said Ron Cooper.

NAREB’s State of Housing in Black America (SHIBA) Issues Forum and participation at the CBCF-ALC, Democratic National Convention, and the

organization’s continued strengthening of partnerships solidified during the Bush admin-istration, along with Congres-sional members including, Maxine Waters and Barbara Lee (CA), and the formation of new relation-ships during the Obama admin-istration - James Clyburn (SC), Sheila Jackson Lee and Al Green (TX), Eleanor Norton Holmes (Wash, DC), and Elijah Cummings (MD), along with many other political officials from all across the country.

These relationships presented a unique and extraordinary opportunity to include the voice of the people in the upholding of important housing legislation, particularly The Mortgage and Forgiveness Debt Relief Act of 2007 (sponsored by notable and legendary Congressman Charlie Rangel, and extended beyond December 31, 2012). “NAREB must continue to raise its voice about the housing crisis and other important issues that have great impact on communities of color,” said Ronald Cooper.Jeffrey Hicks observed that the

CBCF envisions a world in which communities comprised of people of color are free of all disparities and able to contribute fully to advancing the common good. He also emphasized that the CBCF’s mission is to advance global African-American communities by developing community leaders, shaping public policy and by educating the general public. “The highlight of the conference was the 42nd Annual Phoenix Awards Dinner. The dinner fea-tured keynote speaker, the intellectual, lovely and fashionable First Lady Michelle Obama. The first lady stressed the importance that we all owe it to those who fought and died for equal rights in the 1960s to make sure every voter can freely cast a ballot.” Her comments came amidst a push in more than a dozen states to pass laws requiring voters to show ID at the polls. Critics say the laws, unfairly, harm minorities, poor people and college students – all groups that tend to vote Democratic.

LEGISLATIVE

CONFERENCE 2012

NAREB EXPANDS ITS POLITICAL REACH TO WASHINGTON

Reporting by Julius Cartwright

The National Association of Real Estate Brokers (NAREB®) hosted the State of Housing In Black America (SHIBA) at the 2012 Congressional Black Caucus Foundation’s Annual Legislative Conference (CBCF-ALC). The main strategy was to introduce Congressional members to NAREB® and share its SHIBA findings. By virtue of design, the Conference provided an excellent way to network, and learn more about Congressional members’ platforms and their political focus. Each year thousands come from all over the world to convene at the Conference held in Washington, D.C. Elected officials, industry leaders, emerging leaders, media and celebrities were all on-hand to provide solutions to current issues, take part in, and witness the collective power of African American leadership. More than 80 issue forums, sessions and

brain trusts took place during the event. Each morning the Realtist® delegates gathered to review its agenda. At the conclusion of the day Realtist® members reconvened to debrief and share the information it had learned, and discussed strategic future opportunities for NAREB to collaborate with CBC members on the ground level. NAREB’s leadership team was also present for Reverend Al Sharpton’s, National Action Network and Authority Award’s Reception. Congresswoman Marcia Fudge was one of the honored and distinguished awardees. NAREB® was also a supporting sponsor of Congresswoman Maxine Waters and Congresswoman Sheila Jackson Lee’s Receptions.

Dr. Benjamin Chavis, a NNPA Columnist, noted in an article

entitled “Stop Economic Segregation” dated September 27, 2012 that “the recent proactive work and progress of the National Association of Real Estate Brokers concerning the impact of the housing crisis on Black America has been huge. NAREB® President and CEO, Julius Cartwright emphasized, “It is urgently important that we mobilize and take action to address the myriad of critical issues that we have identified, documenting housing-related disparities for African-Americans across the nation.’ We do, however, have much to fight for, and that is the economic recovery, community development and sustainability of Black communities.” NAREB’s presence was definitely felt throughout the Conference by CBC members and attendees. It was more than I envisioned - the level of participation was more

significant than I expected and the support and participation from Realtist® delegates was outstanding, said President Cartwright! Ron Cooper stated that, “NAREB must continue its legislative work, building relationships with key decision makers, and enhancing the SHIBA platform, so that we may bring much needed solutions to every neighborhood where people of color face economic,

The briefing spoke to the plight of African-Americans, and that the communities in which they live and the disproportionate amount of damage left in the wake of the country’s severe economic crisis. Unfortunately, however, these same individuals and communities have not received the attention required to restore their finances which might enable them to contribute to the economic recovery of their communities and the overall economy. The loss of wealth for Blacks is staggering, making real the proposition that it may take generations to rebuild to a pre-economic meltdown asset base.

The National Association of Real Estate Brokers held its first Black Diamonds “African American Awards Reception” at the 2012 Congressional Black Caucus Foundation’s Annual Leadership Conference at the Grand Hyatt Hotel in Washington, DC. The purpose of the event was to recognize and honor chosenindividuals who have demonstrated outstanding service to African American Communities across America. NAREB®, in collaboration with the National Conference of Black Mayors paid tribute to Congressman Al Green, Congresswoman Marcia

Fudge, and PowerNetworking guru, renowned author and speaker, George C. Fraser. The National Association of Equal Opportunity for Higher Education likewise honored Dr. Elsie Scott, and Nichols Perkins, in addition the Young & Powerful honored Channing Hawkins.

Hundreds of influential and powerful politicians crowded into the reception, including Congressman Emanuel Cleaver, Congressman Cedric Richmond, Congresswoman Sheila Jackson Lee, members of the Obama administration,

THEPROMO-BOWL

Rookies vs Vets-LaSchell S. Stewart

MMXIII

The most successful organizations are com-prised of great people; individuals who under-stand the true value and purpose of net-working, teamwork and belonging. The vision is clear, the time has come, under the leader-ship of President, Julius Cartwright, that we are in the midst of a new GAMEPLAN ERA, which unecessarily pits rookie members against the veteran beauracracy in THE PROMO-BOWL for

forward movement and progress.

As a local chapter Presi-dent of NAREB, I have determined how critical it is that we seek new ideas, approaches, and fresh perspectives from current and new mem-bers. Over the years, we have come to recognize that membership is and will remain the “key component. President Elect, Donnell Spivey, a 26 year veteran spoke about using creative

methods, webinars and a hands-on approach to grow membership because it is the “heart beat” of the organiza-tion. Initiating best practices to recruit and scout new members, appoint members with “sheer talent” as op-posed to popularity and seniority (Rookies vs Vets), along with con-tinuous communication between key leaders within the chapters is vital. A clear and con-cise focus on strength-

ening the organization from a “local chapters’ bottoms up approach” is undoubtedly the right movement.

NAREB is committed to its members and pro-motes interaction with like-minded profession-als that may ultimately open doors that you may otherwise not had access to. Get involved and change the game.

6 WAYS TO STRIKE HOMEBUYER GOLDReporting by Andrea Cooksey

HOUSTON

TEXAS 2012

NAREB® packed up its “dream-wagon” and went west in anticipation of striking it big in Texas and was rewarded with “Homebuyer Gold”. Consumers stood in line to receive the rich bounty that NAREB® had to offer. NAREB® delivered a wealth of consumer related housing litterature and information regarding the benefits of homeownership and various

financing options. There is a vast need to educate a starving generation of rental dependant habitants on the advantages of retaining and rebuilding personal wealth within our communities through strategic real estate investments and land acquisition.

BRIDGES TO BUSINESS SUCCESS CITI COMMUNITYDEVELOPMENT

BRIDGES TO

BUSINESS SUCCESS

A home is a primary source of financial security and preserving and promoting homeownership are important ways to expand economic empowerment. But they are not the only ways. In Los Angeles, a team of public, private and nonprofit partners has implemented “Bridges to Business Success,” an innovative program that links affordable housing with small business growth and job creation.Bridges to Business Success provides training and certifica-tion for minority-owned, small construction firms so they can compete successfully for municipal real estate rehabilita-tion contracts . The program

was developed by Citi Community Development, the Minority Busi-ness Development Agency at the University of Southern California, the Los Angeles Housing Depart-ment (LAHD) and the Los Angeles Mayor’s Office of Economic and Business Policy.Small businesses, particularly minority- and women-owned business enterprises (MWBEs), are very effective at driving economic growth and generating jobs. For instance, between 2002 and 2007, minority business growth outpaced that of non-minority firms in terms of total revenue, employment, and number of firms. According to the U.S. Small Business Administration, 65 percent of the new jobs created

in America between 1993 and 2009 were in small businesses, with minority-owned businesses leading the way.Bridges to Business Success has three principal components. First, participating minority small busi-ness owners undertake an eight-week procurement training course at the University of Southern California – including assistance with developing a strategic procurement plan -- that prepares them to compete successfully for municipal contracts. Then, after the entrepreneurs graduate from the course, the Southern California Minority Business Development Council works with them to secure MWBE certification.

Ultimately, the business owners become eligible to compete for affordable hous-ing construction contracts that are made available by the Los Angeles Housing Depart-ment. The municipal contracts leverage federal Neighborhood Stabilization Program (NSP) funding that Los Angeles received from HUD. NSP funds support the acquisition and rehabilitation of foreclosed residential properties in order to increase the availability of affordable housing and revital-ize neighborhoods. Bridges to Business Success empowers local, minority-owned con-tracting firms to acquire NSP contracts in the Los Angeles area.Homes that are rehabilitated through the Bridges to Busi-ness Success program are resold to low- and moderate-income homebuyers through Restore Neighborhoods LA Inc. (RNLA), a nonprofit agency that was established by the City of Los Angeles to purchase and manage the properties. LAHD provides home purchase assistance in the form of a deferred loan for purchase assistance (acquisition, down payment and closing costs),

the Consumer Financial

Protection Bureau (CFPB)

finally defined the

QM (Qualified Mortgage),

which was set forth in the

guidelines of the Dodd-Frank

Wall Street Reform Act

Sections 1411 and 1412. This

set the parameters that the

CFPB would amend

Regulation Z in the

Truth-in-Lending Act. The

most profound purpose in

this definition of the QM

was the “Ability-to-Repay

Rule,” which established four

main ingredients: 1) a 43%

maximum debt ratio; 2) A

30-year fixed loan; 3) a 3%

maximum lender charge; and

4) no exotic products such as

balloon payments, interest

only and negative

amortization. If in fact lenders

adhered to the standards

defined as a QM loan, the

agency created what was

called a safe harbor for these

lenders, which in turn limited

their liabilities of repurchase

and litigation. Indelibly these

standards seem to be a return

to underwriting standards

prior to the subprime era,

which protects not only the

securitization investor from

losses and unseen risk in loan

portfolios but also protect

consumers from being lured

into loans they cannot repay.

NAREB® applauds the Bureau

in its thorough attempt of

protection and its openness

toward future input as to how

to fully implement this

definition of Qualified

Mortgage. The Bureau in

its wisdom allowed for loan

originator exemptions and

exceptions for the rule of

maximum debt ratio, which

has historically affected

the community served by

NAREB®. It appears one of

the main purposes of today’s

announcement is to move the

real estate industry forward

with a clear and concise

definition of what a qualified

mortgage exemplifies.

For the first in NAREB® history – there was a quad-joint installation of officers featuring Baltimore, Washington DC, Prince Georges County and Northern Virginia chapters.

It was a tremendous event for networking, education and

regional camaraderie, said Emerick Pease. The conference began at 12:30pm and wrapped sometime around 8:00pm. The Winter Regional Conference events schedule included such events as: 2013 Business Development and Modeling Successful Systems with Jayson Fenwick, one of the area’s leading business

FLORIDA2012

The Florida chapters of the National Association of Real Estate Brokers are excited about the New Year!Last year NAREB® President Julius Cartwright had the pleasure of touring many of the Florida Chapters which encom-passed chapters from Miami to Jacksonville in a single remarkable trek across the southeast United States within only 48 hours. The whirlwind goodwill tour propelled the President, his Pancakes and Politics initiative to southern coast. President Cartwright’s theme of bringing in an, “Era of New Leadership,” was evident in his presentations. The President’s enthusiasm was contagious. It was obvious to all those who attended that there was definitely something new and exciting about the direction of NAREB®. The energy was electric in, Tampa, Orlando, Miami and Jacksonville.According to President Cartwright, “Together NAREB® and its staff are making an assertive effort to expand our brand, public relations, member services, resources, benefits and

political bargaining power.” During the tour, the President was able to present to new and old members, unique, creative and inventive ways on how to expand and grow their businesses. He talked openly and honestly pertaining to how real estate is evolving and how as a network of professionals NAREB® members can support each other and continue to flourish collectively as well as individual chapters and businesses. The President also spoke candidly on what it means to be a Realtist® member of NAREB® and how that association can propell you to unimaginable heights outside of NAREB®.

President Cartwright credits the genesis of the Floridian goodwill tour was the brainchild of Danny Felton, Vice President of NAREB® Region VI. While in Orlando at the Bay Area Association of Realtist®, Julius was present for the Installation ceremonies where Mr. Felton seized on the opportunity and quickly made calls to coordinate meetings in Tampa, Orlando Miami and Jacksonville. Fortunately

Realtist® chapter members were able to coordinate with little or no advance notice. The President agreed to allow Mr. Felton to take him on a two day road-trip across Florida that culminated in the Politic & Pancake Tour.

Mr. Felton believes that their efforts were fruitful and gave members the opportunity to meet the President and speak with the head of the NAREB® organization. Danny said that, “You had to be there to believe it”. President Cartwright delivered a much needed prescription for success to the southern Realtist® bodies. I’m excited and I’m

grateful to the President for taking time out of his busy schedule to visit some of our Floridian Chapters.”Due to the success of the Pancakes and Politics Breakfast tour of Florida there are current talks of creating a state wide chapter, starting two new chapters and increasing the presence and membership of each existing chapter.Floridian NAREB® members are elated with the new prospects and look forward to working with the President and his staff to bestow virtue to the plans of President Cartwright and Region VI VP, Danny Felton.

Bedford Stuyvesant Real Estate Board Celebrates 75 Years, with Glimpse of the Past as it Focuses on the FutureBy Cindy Similien-Johnson

Against the backdrop of the glittering East River and the Williamsburg Bridge, the Bedford Stuyvesant Real Estate Board celebrated its milestone 75th anniversary by heralding its foundations and the visionaries who built them, before business, corporate, community and political leaders, at the Giando on the Water, Thursday, October 25 in Brooklyn, New York. The BSREB board and member-ship led by chair Joyce Turner, president Bessie Edwards, anniversary chair and treasurer Richard Flateau, and communications officer Barbara Haynes, hosted 150 guests and well-wishers at the event which was part revelry, ceremony, intimate gala and family reunion. Throughout the joyous evening, the event theme, Honoring the Past, Charting the Future resonated in the program speeches and group conversations, before and after dinner. Among the many highlights of the evening was the entrance of one of Brooklyn’s oldest entrepreneurial real estate families led by the patriarch

Charles Atwell, an associate of the late BSREB pioneers William Turner and Robert Buckner, to whom the evening was dedicated. Another was the awarding of special honors to Pamela Green, Executive Director of the Weeksville Heritage Center, and Ava Barnett, President of the Brownstoners of Bedford-Stuyvesant – whose good works revolving around preservation and property management exemplify the realization of the dreams of the early founders. BSREB also received honors, including proclamations from Councilwoman Letitia James and Deputy Borough President Sandra Chapman and well-wishes from Councilman Al Vann and State Senator Velmanette Montgomery, two political leaders who have helmed programs in housing. Senator Montgomery stated,” “The Bedford Stuyvesant Real Estate Board are pillars of the new Renaissance in the village of Bedford-Stuyvesant. They are the best firewall to total gentrification. They bring people back home so they reclaim their own homes.”And in a separate conversa-tion, Councilman Vann, who spearheaded the movement to educate and counsel people who faces property tax challenges,

HURRICANESANDY

NEW JERSEY

2012

Twenty-four to forty-eight hours prior to the arrival of Hurricane Sandy, the uncertainty was palpable. The noise that indicates traffic was evident and clear. Anxiousness and worry of some filled the air accompanied by doubt and laughter by others. The majority of Jerseyans were consumed with anxiety and worry while others were filled with doubt. Some of my fellow Jerseyans were cautious and some threw care to the wind. So many false alarms had been sounded in the past that it was not difficult to chalk up yet another governmental weather warning

in the “it’ll never happen here” column. Jokes were passed about in offices and the internet about Noah, and The Ark. The snow-plow drivers and students complained about it being rain and not snow. You see, in the northeast, snow means a day off from school for students and overtime pay for snow-plow drivers. But as the 48 hour clock ticked down and the weather activity picked up, the noise increased and it became more apparent that people were beginning to take Hurricane Sandy serious. Traffic was snarled and the

mall parking lots had emptied. Gas stations were overflowing, grocery stores were at capacity, liquor stores and hardware stores were standing room only. There was noise all over. The nonchalant attitude had turned into worry and distress. As the countdown to the arrival of Hurricane Sandy drew closer the noise was beginning to die down. There weren’t as many cars on the streets. The grocery store shelves were bare and the hardware store had no batteries. The closer Hurricane Sandy came to making landfall the quieter it became. No cars,

no shopping carts, no children, no birds, no dogs, no trucks, no trains, no sirens…the quiet came. The arrival of Hurricane Sandy was powerful and amazing. Hurricane Sandy lifted trees and gave rise to rivers. She flooded basements and towns, cars and depots, cottages and mansions. The natural disaster that seems to affect every other State and every other country was now visiting New Jersey. The devastation that accompanied Hurricane Sandy can be duplicated at any given time in...

any part of the country. Disasters have names but no addresses and we must all be aware of their lingering effects. When the quiet came it delivered no electricity. The usual humming we are accustomed to hearing had disappeared. There was no television, no refrigerator, no furnace, no internet, no washer and no dryer. The experience of coldness is awakening. Your nights are early and your days long. Gas lines are policed. Food stored in your freezer is rotting and there is no bread, milk or water at the grocery stores. The quiet came and it brought humbleness. Under the guidance of NAREB® President Julius Cartwright this experience and awareness was allowed to be shared by way of the NAREB® internet radio show. As advocates, Realtists® need to be aware and made conscious of the disparity of rescue and repair in our communities. Our homes, our properties, our listings (our businesses) were all affected by Hurricane Sandy. It behooves the Realtist® network to be prepared strategically and economically going forward to protect the under-served community.

Each year, the National Association of Real Estate Brokers (NAREB) implements key regional and national public relations strategies and activities to introduce and promote its programs, partnerships, advocacy initiatives, activities, special events and products.

Public relations is responsible for building relationships and generating local, national and sometimes, international awareness. It’s about image, reputation and outreach – finding advocates, and supporters like public officials, business, community and religious leaders, corporations and organizations, and broadcast, print, online and industry media, to help communicate and/or support NAREB’s mission, products and services.

As a result, NAREB is positioned as a “go-to-expert” in the real estate industry, and a partner and “friend” to members of the Congressional Black Caucus (CBC) in helping to analyze, understand and develop solutions to address the growing foreclosure and mortgage crisis facing Americans, particularly in minority communities.Over the past year, a national public relations plan has been absolutely vital to the overall marketing mix for the National Association of Real Estate Brokers, and has yielded extraordinary results.
