I (and my kitten Shadow!) enjoyed spending the time with the United Methodist Church team. We know a lot of time, coordination and work went into collecting the donations, getting them here and unpacked. We appreciate everyone for everything they did. The pantry was so nicely stocked and with all the appropriate food. We were so thankful for it as

we did not receive much food from our weekly Food Pantry delivery. Because of UMC donations, we were able to keep the food pantry open and provide food all week. Now the clothes, what a hit! All the clothes that were put out, completely gone. A good half of what we couldn’t fit on racks/shelves, is also gone. The people of United Methodist Church cannot be thanked enough for theirkindness, generosity and time. We look forward to working with you allagain in the near future. From all of us here at West Rural Community Center, we again say thankyou and let’s do it again!Respectfully, Julie CulpWest Rural Community Center, 8656 W Hwy 71, Bldg A, Austin, TX 78735

Calling all friends, youth directors, scouts, bible study groups, mother’s groups...we need 100’s of fleece scarves to help keep the poor in the Colonias of Nuevo Laredo warm at night. Due to issues with the previous mission trip to Mexico, “Bridging Heart’s” will be traveling light to Mexico this Christmas. With your help, we hope to overflow Santa’s sleigh with 100’s of warm fuzzy scarves and blankets for the poor in the Colonias. It has become more and more difficult and expensive to cross the border with a van full of food and other needed supplies. So, our hope is to cross the border with a “Bridging Heart’s” debit card with sufficient funds to purchase rice (beans are too expensive in Mexico), eggs, fruit, vegetables...for over 200 families in the Colonias. For the children we will plan a Christmas party with pinatas, cake, games and fleece scarves for everyone. Thank you in advance for making this Christmas Dream come true.  www.bridginghope.org Scarves needed (by December 5): • All colors and All sizes - just cut and fringe and repeat!(Fleece is 50% off at JoAnn’s Fabric, Hobby Lobby, Walmart... JoAnn’s Fabric gives an extra 15% off for Teachers)• Scarves for youth (6” by 36”)• Scarves for adults (8” by 45/46”)• Babies (small tie blankets)

Welcome Diana!Ohumc’s New Assistant choir

DirectorHailing from Fayetteville, Arkansas, Diana Hopkins received her Under-graduate degree in Choral Studies from the University of Texas at Austin. She previously served as the Assistant Choir Director at Murchison Middle School and has

returned to the University of Texas for a Master’s degree in Choral Conducting. Diana discovered her passion for music at an early age in the Episcopal Church and has held positions as the Soprano section leader at St. Matthew’s Episcopal Church and All Saint’s Episcopal Church. She has a loving, supportive and talented husband, Steven, who is a Trombonist and Band Director at Lake Travis High School. She is thrilled to be joining the family of Oak Hill United Methodist as the new Assistant Choir Director and can’t wait to share her love of music! In addition to assisting with the adult choir Diana will direct the youth choir and the children’s choirs.

Our Day and a half at Women of FaithThe event started on Friday evening, with dance, music (Ce-Ce Winans) and a wonder-ful comedian by the name of Ken Davis. The theme was Celebrate What Matters (God’s Love). We had a beautiful array of speakers (Sheila Walsh, Christine Caine, Angie Smith, Pat Smith, Jennie Allen) and Ballet Magnificat that touched on some sensitive subjects and to many attending, a very important message about the unfailing Love

of God. On Saturday we had the pleasure of music presented by Selah. Ladies, I encourage you to begin to plan on next year’s event. Plan early---it is a wonderful girls’ get away and such powerful messages that can change your life.www.womenoffaith.com

The Hyatt Riverwalk graciously provided free (beautiful) accomodations for Oak Hill UMC

Women of Faith participants.

Mike Lewis, the “JesusPainter”, did this amazing art on stage during the lunch break, and later the painting was given away in a raffle to one

fall festival variety shOWThis event has been a fun Oak Hill UMC tradition filled with talented singers, dancers and entertainers, as well as acts that can only be described as “interesting”. we have a new venue for the show which promises to be a good draw for the next

generation, and our hostess is back by popular demand (well, mostly because she won’t go away), Chita Rodriguez, the star of her own fictitious Mexican cable access show.

This year the Show will be outdoors. The church can provide an electric keyboard/piano. You must provide your own materials (Cd’s, costumes, etc.) and you must be able to attend a “run through” on Saturday morning, October 27, between 9 a.m. and

noon. You will be contacted to set up your time. Sign up your act by completing the registration form, found in the church office or online (click here). Please contact Sandy or

Mark Nichols at 301-0938 or email [email protected].

SOS opportunity at clayton ElementaryPlease help us support our area schools! Clayton Elementary is looking for some volunteers to help in their SOAR program. SOAR stands for Students on Adventures in Reading. Volunteers help students in 2nd-5th grade improve their reading skills through one-on-one one mentoring. SOAR students typically do not have reading disabilities, but rather, need practice reading. Volunteers commit to a 30 minute time slot once a week. Learning About StewardshipThis Sunday is Consecration Sunday, when we offer our pledges toward the 2013 budget and ministries of our church family. There are children’s pledge cards available for your kids to fill out if they wish to. They are simple cards with a place for the children to check any or all of these things that they are pledging to do in 2013 at Oak Hill:

I show my thanks to God with:__my time__my talent__my money

There is no set amount they are asked to contribute, we just want them to know that they are a part of what’s going on and believe that this kind of opportunity to express commitment to and support of their church is an important part of their growth into church membership and stewardship. There is no pressure whatsoever to participate - but the opportunity and the cards are there if your child wants to fill one out. There will also be children’s offering envelopes available each week if your child wants to use them to put their offering in the collection plates. Thanks for your partnership in teaching our children what it means to be part of the church and our church family.

“The Word Through Art” classLocal artist Kelly Barrow would like to invite any and all to a creative afternoon to explore the Word in a visual way. Previous art experience and perceived talent are optional. A childlike enthu-siasm is encouraged, but not required. Come prepared with your favorite Bible verse or passage and supplies will be provided. The class will be November 10 in the Fellowship Hall, 1-6 p.m.

Bio: Kelly is a mixed-media visual artist who works with collage and sculpture, which is a fancy way of saying making stuff out of whatever’s available at the moment. She tries to utilize materials that are on their way to the trash including but not limited to paper, cardboard, old clothes, and bits of junk. Kelly believes that art and artistic experiences can deepen our relationship with God and further our understanding of his plan for our lives. Contact Sharon Douglass at [email protected] or 288-3836 for more information.
