"President's Message"

On May 10th our successfulmonthly lecture programs will beending for the season. Prior to thepresentation there will be a brief annual meeting & election of trustees of the Greece Historical

Society. The board has chosen foryour consideration these existing board members:Lee Strauss, Sandy Peck, Cyndie Shevlin, JackWallenhorst and Bill Sauers. New to our board is Paula Smith, who will be a welcome addition. Inaccordance to the bylaws, no nominations will beaccepted from the floor. We would like to thanktrustee, Margie Zerkcie who will be leaving theboard. We will miss her, but look forward to hercontinuing volunteer commitments to the GreeceHistorical Society.

Summer is almost here and brings our annualStrawberry Festival. We are planning an expandedfestival (similar to last year) on Monday June 20th4-8 p.m. We will have a "dessert tasting festival" withlocal vendors supplying samples of various desserts. There will be entertainment through-out, doorprizes, raffles and activities for the whole family.Watch for more information in the Greece Post andRochester Democrat & Chronicle and on our ownweb site, greecehistoricalsociety.net. Last year thefestival was enjoyed by nearly 450 of our friends.

Come early  —shortcakes and desserts will beavailable only while supplies last. With all our activities, it takes the commitment of

our dedicated volunteers. As with many organiza-

tions these days, we seem to be losing volunteers as

time passes. If you have a special skill we could use

and you are willing to volunteer some of your time

please give us a call. We especially need docents for

Sunday afternoons to give tours of our museum.

Besides our volunteers, it takes monetary support

to run our museum. So don't forget to renew yourmembership and please encourage your family,

friends and neighbors to become members.

History at the Greece Museum

Lee Strauss, Education Committee

Who was the ―shutter bug,‖ Alfred James Bowers?

Born in England about 1878, Alfred , with his wife and son, immigrated here in1915 just after the start of

World War 1. They settled in Rochester and Albert worked as janitor at Eastman Kodak Park. In 1914 Kod

had introduced the new Autographic, bellows, folding camera. It had a clever innovation on the back o

this camera. A small rectangular flap could be raised and a metal stylus, removed from a clip, enabling tuser to inscribe a small notation such as date and location on the undeveloped film. By 1916 Mr. Bowers

bought one of the Autographic models for $8.00 to $10.00. For several years Bowers would snap hun-

dreds of area photos of their newly adopted country. We are so fortunate to have this amazing collectio

of about one hundred images. The collage of Bowers’ photos on page 6 are just a tiny sampling from th

important treasure trove.
