Montgomery SWCD Annual Meeting / Open House Thursday, October 9th, 2014 2:00pm - 6:30pm 10025 Amity Road, Brookville, Ohio, 45309 Fall is approaching quickly, and bringing with it that other season, election season! We hold elections for one or two members of our Board of Supervisors each year. This year, we have two spots, and four highly qualified candidates. Their backgrounds with the Montgomery Soil & Water Conservation District, a little about who they are, and their reasons for wanting to serve the community by being a part of the Montgomery SWCD can be found on pages four and five. Get to know them, and then come vote! This event is about hearing your voice on who you want to represent you on the Montgomery SWCD Board, and the direction you want this organization to take. The more of you we hear from, the better we are able to accomplish your goals for conservation of our soil and water, and through that, the protection and improvement of our region’s quality of life! We are holding an open house during the elections, as we have the last couple years. Feedback on the event has been very enthusiastic. Many of you have noted that you enjoy the flexibility to either drop in, vote quick, maybe grab a bite to eat, and then leave, or, if time allows, to stay, visit with neighbors, eat a nice meal, and enjoy the displays and talks. The Open House will officially start at 2:00pm and go through 6:30pm. At any time during the Open House hours, drop by, VOTE for the Supervisors of your choice, and stay awhile if you can! No reservations or advance notice are required to participate or to eat. In and around the office, we will have our survey and maintenance equipment, educational models, drainage control structure and tile displays, our rain barrel, native landscaping and rain gardens, and more! Check them out and let us know if you have any questions, or ideas on how we can better serve the community. Company Seven Barbecue is once again catering. The menu includes pulled pork sandwiches, pork & beans, coleslaw, chips, and drinks. Ice cream from Ullery’s will also be available for those of us with a sweet tooth, while it lasts! Donations to cover the expense of the meal will be accepted. During the event, from 4:00pm until 5:00pm, Dean Houchen, our local Pheasant’s Forever Farm Bill Wildlife Biologist, will be joining us to give a special presentation on wildlife habitat. 2014 Scholarship Winners!

We’re back in the Waterway Business With the passing of the new farm bill in February of 2014, the Conservation Reserve Program, or CRP, has been reauthorized. This is the program that many Montgomery County landowners have utilized to get cost share on installing Grassed Waterways, Filter Strips, and Wildlife Field Borders.

In the past couple of years, there was a lot of uncertainty with this program because of changes and delays in getting a new farm bill passed, and the Montgomery SWCD had not been actively promoting it. That being said, all of the heavy rains this past winter and spring were very hard on our cropland. Areas that before seemed to be stable have now developed large gullies.

We would like to work with you in fixing those erosion problems on your farm. Fall is the perfect time to sign up! As you are harvesting your crops this year, be on the lookout for potential waterway sites, and call us if you have an area of concern. Right now we don’t have many signups for 2015, so now is the time to get on the list and correct those erosion problems on your farm!

Contact Jeremy Huggler or Jeff Barnes if you have an erosion site that you would like to have evaluated. We can also give advice and possible program help with prospective wildlife areas and filter strips along ditches.

Natural Resources / Agricultural College Scholarship: We had two applicants this year that were both so deserving, we could not decide between them. So, the Board decided to award two scholarships! We wish them all the best, and are confident they will do well!

Kristin Judy, a 2014 graduate of Valley View High School who will be attending the University of Tennessee, has grown up helping on the family farm and watching her grandfather, a veterinarian, help hurt and sick animals. She plans to follow in his footsteps and someday open a veterinary practice of her own.

Lisa Seim, a 2014 graduate of Twin Valley South, will be attending Morehead State University in Kentucky. She has been very involved in the leadership of her FFA chapter and 4-H club, as well as helping on the family farm with livestock and grain production. Her long term goals are to open her own veterinary practice, or to work in food animal production management.

Ohio Forestry Wildlife Conservation Camp Scholarship: Hannah Deitering, a student at Northmont High School, won our Ohio Forestry Wildlife Conservation Camp Scholarship for the second year in a row. Her experiences at forestry camp allowed her to learn about the environment in new ways, and she is excited to add to that experience!

Before: gully erosion, lost soil

After: saved soil, safe for equipment

7th Annual Autumn Fest

Free Fun for kids of ALL ages! Saturday, September 27th, 10:00am - 4:00pm

Learning Tree Farm, 3376 S. Union Road, Dayton, Ohio 45417 Our annual free Autumn Fest has quickly become a favorite family tradition, and this year will be no exception! We’ll have just the right mix of the favorites from past years, and new things you haven’t seen before! New this year will be a threshing demonstration, using a restored old steam-powered engine to separate the wheat grain from the stalk. This is a very active and dynamic demonstration, and a great window into how

farm life has changed! For our classic TV buffs, we’ll have restored ‘Duke’s of Hazard’ cars on display. Of course, the farm animals, pony rides, sheep shearing and herding, hay rides, old fashioned children’s games, face painting, and conservation exhibits will be back, along with many other popular past and exciting new activities, demonstrations and exhibits! We’re adding a silent auction, featuring items like a

gorgeous quilt, as well as a carving done by a chainsaw artist (who you will be able to watch making other items), and more! All events and activities are free, and food is priced affordably, so you can have a great day of family fun without emptying your wallet. We look forward to seeing you at Learning Tree Farm on Saturday, September 27th, from 10:00am to 4:00pm. Come join the Montgomery SWCD and Learning Tree Farm for this full day of fun kid’s activities, interesting exhibits, and exciting demonstrations. Don’t forget to pick up your free pumpkin before you leave!

During our Annual Meeting / Open House, from 4:00pm until 5:00pm, Dean Houchen, our local Pheasant’s Forever Farm Bill Wildlife Biologist, will be joining us to give a special presentation on wildlife habitat. If you’re interested in making your property more welcoming to everything from monarchs and goldfinch to deer and turkeys, and if you have a balcony or hundreds of acres,

you won’t want to miss this! No reservations are needed. All attendees are encouraged and welcome to stay for the other parts of the Annual Meeting / Open House, to vote, and to enjoy! We look forward to seeing you there!

Ohio Soil and Water Conservation Commission Election Legal Notice

The Ohio Soil and Water Conservation Commission will cause an election of Supervisors of the Montgomery Soil & Water Conservation District (SWCD) to be held in accordance with Chapter 1515 of the Ohio Revised Code.

Residents or landowners, firms, and corporations that own land or occupy land in Montgomery County and are 18 years of age and older may vote for Supervisor. A non-resident landowner, firm or corporation must provide an affidavit of eligibility, which includes designation of voting representative, prior to casting a ballot.

There are three ways an eligible voter can cast a ballot: (1) at the annual meeting, which will take place Thursday, October 9, 2014 from 2:00pm to 6:30pm; (2) at the Montgomery SWCD office until 4:00pm on Wednesday, October 8, 2014; or (3) vote absentee by requesting the proper absentee ballot request forms from the Montgomery SWCD office at the following address:

Montgomery Soil & Water Conservation District, 10025 Amity Road, Brookville, OH 45309 Phone Number: (937) 854-7645

Two (2) Supervisors will be elected. Nominees are: Bruce Flora, Pete Lurker, Felicia Olinger and Bill Wissinger

Pete Lurker

Peter Lurker, PhD, PE, CIH is a retired environmental engineer registered in the state of Ohio as a professional engineer and has served as an associate supervisor to the Montgomery County Soil and Water District for the last ten years. He also serves on the Dayton Environmental Advisory Board and the German Township Board of Zoning Appeals. Peter owns a horse farm in German Township and has served as the chair for the Germantown Well Field Protection Committee.

The ability to apply his background to help the Montgomery SWCD is his reason for running for election.

Bruce Flora

Bruce is a proud fourth generation farmer and life-long resident of Brookville. He and his wife Karen have five children and three grandchildren.

For Bruce, farming is his life. He, his brother, and a son currently farm over 2,000 acres of corn and beans. For over 50 years, their family owned and operated a dairy farm, which included a lagoon that the Montgomery SWCD helped design in the 1980’s. He has continually worked with the Montgomery SWCD to design many waterways and ditches on his land, as well as the land of many of his landlords. Practices used on his farm include no-till beans and minimum tillage corn, grid soil sampling, and use of variable rates for seeding, fertilizing and chemicals applications.

His goal for being part of the Montgomery SWCD Board is to help others understand the importance of preserving the quality of our water and land. He is committed to the improvement of worn out tile, ditches and waterways to assist with improving our environment. It is his belief that continuing these practices will insure the chance for many more generations of his family and others to love and farm the land as he does.

Bill Wissinger lives in Clay Township with his wife Beth. Bill and one of their three children work at Brookville Rental, a family-owned business which they have operated for 25 years. In addition, he calls himself a mini farmer as he applies conservation practices on their 30 acres of farmland. Bill was previously an employee and later a supervisor at the Dayton Power and Light Company.

Bill is a life-long Clay Township resident and enthusiastic supporter of the Brookville Blue Devils. He has served on the Clay Township Zoning Board, and is currently a member of the Brookville Chamber of Commerce and various other associations and Boards.

During his twelve year tenure at the District, Bill has served four terms as Board Chairman. The construction of a number of conservation works of improvement (Drainage Projects) are attributed to his work. Bill’s deep beliefs in preserving our natural resources and farmland for the future are his driving force for running for another term.

Meet the Candidates Felicia Olinger

Felicia Olinger has served on the MSWCD Board of Supervisors since January 2011 and currently serves as the Board Chairperson. Before serving on the Board, Felicia served as the Educator at the Montgomery SWCD, giving her a thorough knowledge of how the organization works and its strengths and weaknesses. Felicia wants to help the Montgomery SWCD to continue to work efficiently, to be more productive in the urban and agricultural communities, and to be good stewards of the land. Felicia is most interested in expanding the Montgomery SWCD reach into the urban community with rain barrels and small farm workshops.

Felicia has worked for ITB for the past four years as an Engineer. Her primary duties include supporting a NASA Energy and Water contract and conducting audits of NASA facilities. Felicia has a Bachelor of Science in Environmental Sciences from Wright State University, Dayton, Ohio and is a native to Montgomery County.
