This could be the last “We Didn’t Know That About …” article
Charlotte Harbor Rotarians and Guests, you are invited to write a brief story yourself for publication in our bulletin. It needn't be an autobiography, just a slice of your life that you enjoyed or look back on and smile. This series of articles can only continue with your contributions. Have you enjoyed the articles? Learned about your fellow Rotarians? If so, we need your help! Tell us something about yourself we might not know, send it to Bob Clendenin at: [email protected]. The article does not have to be long; 250 words is more than enough. And, if you have an old photo to go with it, all the better!
Club Christmas Party December 9th
One event we have been doing for years at our Christmas Party is our “Chinese Auc-tion” gift ex-change be-tween mem-bers. The gift should be in the $20 to $25 range, be of gen-eral interest and in good taste (no XXX rated calendars, etc.) The gift should be WRAPPED.
Portraits A century of face time Beginning on page 30, the December Rotar-ian magazine has a series of photos of visionar-ies and humanitarians from Thomas Edison to Bill Gates, including Wilber and Orville Wright, Sir Winston Churchill, Buzz Aldrin, Ted Turner (pictured below) and many others.
No Major Spills By Guest Editor Dave Powell
Invocation May each of us assembled here today enjoy the many offerings of Rotary.
May we abide by the rules we have established - those of trust, fellowship and ethics.
May we place Service above Self, in our daily endeavors.
May we always test ourselves and our efforts to be sure they are the truth, good for all concerned, of benefit to man-kind, and provide peace and under-standing.
Amen
It’s me again on Tuesday. My arrival was early because I wanted to be well-prepared to write these meeting notes. However, the worker bees were already in place. Greeter Rick was at the door, the banners were hung, silverware in place, coffee brewed and ready to pour. Eve-ryone was so good, you might think they were putting on an act for Santa. Promptly at seven, President Sherry led us in reading the invocation, Austin led us in pledging our allegiance to the flag and we sang God Bless America under Don’s apt leader-ship. Breakfast went smoothly with no major spills. The meeting progressed with Stephen wielding a mean net. Darryl was fined for being late. Makes ups were from Don, Nancy and Vibha. Guests Don V, Karol, and Lloyd were serenaded with our welcome song.
Don tried to inform all that Jose’s cha cha cha would be electronic because of his ab-sence. As was the case, we could not hear it because someone drowned it out with a poor
English imitation. Nancy had a birthday and Vicki and Wayne celebrated their 6th anniver-sary. Chris also distributed a sign-up sheet for volunteers to serving breakfast for the Cultural Center’s volunteers. Our Speaker, Dr. Ramon Gil was intro-duced by Vibha Kumar. He is a local doctor who spoke on Parkinson’s Disease. He started it with a quote of a Dr. Rama. “Those who fight Parkinson’s with knowledge will always find solutions.” Gil said that there are many symptoms or in-dicators that may be exhibited five to six years be-fore the more common ones involving motor skills like bal-ance, stiffness and tremors. In stage one it may be a loss of smell, chronic con-stipation, mood disorders and sleep disturbance among others. Doctors want to be able to inter-vene before motor symptoms occur. Cognition or dementia are also symptoms of Parkinson’s. There has been a lot of pro-gress in treatment. In the seventies, the life expectancy of a Parkinson’s patient was 8-10 years. Today it is the same as the general popu-lation. He emphasized that the most important treatment was exercise. Tai Chi, Yoga and dancing are all good exercises. Walking is also excellent. Today’s Parkinson’s patients can expect to continue a happy and productive life. The meeting adjourned at 8:04 A.M.

This isn't so much about me as about the Old Clunker Car I drive from time to time. When I bought it from a man in Fort Myers in 1977, it had about 60,000 miles. Being 15 years old, (the Benz, not me) it was just another used car. Having migrated to Florida in 1974, I was enamored with all the top-down sports car drivers I'd seen enjoying the tropical sun. Checking cars for sale in the classified, I found a good deal, bought it and sold my 197? Chevy.
For 18 years it was my drive-to-work car and sometimes my-take-a-trip car. I remember traveling the beltway around Washington, D.C. in a snowstorm. Averaging about 12 thousand miles a year, the Benz is now pushing 300,000. I can't say for sure that's true, because there was considerable driving with a speedometer malfunction. Whenever I'm asked if I restored the car myself, I like to answer it's never been restored. I just fix stuff when it breaks. The truth is I've had it painted three times and repaired or replaced almost every bit of the drive train. Ask me about the time it was wrecked by three Chevrolets. Sometime around 1995, I decided there was some appeal to having a car with air-conditioning, headrests, a back seat and anti-lock brakes. Purchasing a new car from a fellow Rotarian, I put the Old Clunker in the garage, saving it for special events, such as driving to Rotary meetings.
