along that stress Being a Friend FIRST.

Sandie has been successful in placing this program in nine schools throughout our council area via Guidance counselors as an addition to their existing programs. She says it is soon to be eleven school placements and even more (hopefully) to follow. Sandie says, “With BFF, in this past year we have touched the lives of 245 girls and it’s a growing program: THAT is truly rewarding.”

Ien Sandie, Girl Leadership Experience

Specialist is the coordinator of the

“BFF” program. The “Be A Friend

First” program is a Girl Scouts initiative

that works within schools to target

middle school-age girls. This age group

has proven to be the most susceptible

to bullying.

The BFF program is the only program

of its kind to attempt to pre-empt and

prevent the bully problem amongst

girls before it starts. The program

teaches conflict resolution skills and

problem-solving approaches to getting

I Can’t Wait

As society becomes busier, volunteer

numbers have dropped off. There is so

much competing for our time and

attention, we have fewer volunteers.

Nationally, over 35,000 girls are on a

waiting list to be placed with a leader or

a troop. Please know that you don’t

have to be a mom to be a volunteer.

YOU can be male, female, a parent,

uncle, aunt, sister, neighbor, friend. Girl

Scout volunteers come to us from all

demographics and levels of experience.

What does a Girl Scout volunteer look

like? Just like you: because THEY...

CAN’T Wait….

20% of girls say they have been bullied in middle school. More than 70% have seen bullying.

When bystanders intervene, bullying stops within 10 seconds 57% of the time.

Cookie rallies were held all throughout council. Participation was great and there is so

much exciting cookie news to share. GSESC is a participant in “Digital Cookie” which is a

new online sales platform. There is not one general website for cookie fans to shop

from: Rather, each Girl Scout creates her own e-commerce site and is responsible for

her own marketing and sales. Online cookie customers MUST be invited via email link to

shop from the online “digital cookie” system “store”. Girl scouts are still taking order

the old-fashioned way by paper order form. The digital component is designed to offer

another layer of technology and enterprise but not to REPLACE the way that so many

are accustomed to ordering their girl scout cookies.

Some Girl Scouts are making business cards with QR codes to their websites. They will

also be utilizing the cookie finder app during booth sales starting in February. For

people who cannot (or don’t want to) wait for spotting the familiar booth setups at the

familiar places, girl scouts say you should make fast friends with a girl scout and get on

her email distribution list. For those who do not know a Girl Scout or have trouble

locating one, Product Program Specialist Stephanie Walsh can help connect cookie

seekers with cookie sellers. Her phone number is (843) 300-0262 and she is available

via email at [email protected].

Our council has two of the three advertised “new flavors”: a gluten-free cookie,

“Toffee-Tastic” and an oatmeal raisin cookie, “Rah-Rah Raisin” which us something to

cheer about.

Email [email protected] for a list of volunteer opportunities. If you have time and the spirit to share with our girls, we have a place for YOU!
