Conlan School is the leading English Language School in Abergele (North Wales) and Chester (England). Our mission is to enrich lives through providing unique cultural and learning experiences.

We do this though tailor-made English courses for groups that can include homestay with British families, visits to local companies and schools, work experience and social and cultural activities. We provide great learning experiences in a safe environment which will help students progress well at school, have an experience of life in another European country, increase their employability and inspire them academically.

We offer standard English programmes, exam preparation courses, vocationally focussed or subject specific courses with company visits and workshops, and work experience programmes. We will design it with you to maximise the enjoyment and usefulness of the experience for your students.

English for Specific Purposes gives you the opportunity to decide on a course designed to suit your exact needs. In cooperation with Conlan School and following a few simple steps, Conlan School will design a fun, challenging and interesting programme which will, most importantly, give you the language skills required to succeed in your chosen field. Nowadays, more and more students and institutions are introducing external, globally recognised examinations as a way of focusing the English language studies and obtaining, at the same time, a very useful qualification. Conlan School tailor make programmes to fit student needs, whatever the impending examination. We cover Trinity, Cambridge (FCE, CAE, CPE), General and Academic English (IELTS), Business English (TOEIC). We are a Trinity College London Registered Centre for International ESOL examinations (GESE/ISE), therefore the Trinity Examination can be taken at our centres.

GENERALENGLISH

The pedagogical methodology employed at Conlan School integrates a primary communicative approach with elements of other approaches to take into account the different learners’ needs, attitudes and objectives in learning English, for example, cooperative learning, CLIL (Content and Language Integrated Learning) and action research. The overall approach is learner centred and aims to equip students with the tools to become autonomous learners. Our teachers lead the students through the course using a variety of didactic material introducing new language skills and knowledge with examples and demonstrations. These are then implemented by the students in a variety of ways; paired/group work, discussions, projects, debates, presentations, written exercises.

CLIL: teach the teacher!

CLIL (Content and Language Integrated Learning) is an educational approach in which an additional language is used for the learning and teaching of both content and language.This course aims to build the confidence of non-native teachers enabling them to deliver lessons through the medium of English. During workshops with experts on CLIL and qualified CELTA teachers, you will prepare a lesson in your subject in English and then you will present your CLIL lesson to the rest of the group.Finally, you will shadow teachers of local high schools to view first-hand the education system in the UK and, in particular, fellow teachers’ classroom techniques.

With the vast majority of the Welsh landscape being rural countryside, it is no wonder that farming and agriculture plays such an important role in the Welsh economy. During Agriculture in Wales Conlan School takes participants deep into the heart of Wales’ oldest profession and looks at how the agriculture industry has changed over the years. This course shows participants how local students currently study agriculture. It will take you on guided tours of various farms which have evolved to ensure their sustainability in an ever developing industry, and takes a look at the alternative uses of Wales’ countryside and rural environment.

All aboard! Get ready for a journey through the ancient history of North Wales and Cheshire! Experienced and enthusiastic archaeologists will take you through the most ancient phases of the history of these regions. This programme takes you deep into the world of the media and looks at how it affects society today. You will be guided through the history and development of journalism, ethics of journalism, the power of the media and new media with the use of internet journalism. With interactive workshops given by experts and journalists, along with a project work about web 2.0 and visits to a newspaper headquarters and a printing press, this course is perfect for anybody who wants a clear understanding of the media and the relationship between democracy and the press.

In recent years, social media has become more influential in people’s lives. Social media has changed the way we interact with everything and everyone. The aim of this course is to understand the impact of social media on society and, more specifically, on younger generation. Green Attitude 2.0

Everyone now knows that the environment must be protected for future generations. Sustainability and green energy are the keywords for a better existence for us all. By carefully looking after the natural resources that surround us and managing them in a better way, we can develop ways to live sustainably on our planet. On this course, you will take part in lessons and workshops about the scientific principles, impact and technology surrounding energy produced by fossil fuels versus energy produced by newer “greener” methods. You will experience demonstrations and experiments and be asked to think about how to live a zero-carbon lifestyle.

Literature and creative writing

This is a journey that leads you through the locations associated with major authors of English literature. You will discover some of Wales’ and Northern England’s greatest poets and writers. You will visit the birthplace of Lewis Carroll in the village of Daresbury, where “Alice in Wonderland” was written, or the historic Gawsworth Hall, near Macclesfield, that is said to have been the home of Mary Fitton, the ‘Dark Lady’ of Shakespeare’s sonnets. You will also learn the history of the publishing industry in North Wales and Cheshire.Thanks to the inspiring visits and workshops with writing experts, at the end of the course you will have the opportunity to create your own novel or poem!

Nowadays artists have more freedom to create and sell their own music through the web, but would they create authentic art while blandness and conformity are ruling the market? SLOW TOURISM

In a world ruled by speed, Slow Tourism takes the speed out of our vacations. Designed to slow the pace of a holiday down so you have the opportunity to interact with the people and places you experience, instead of just trying see and do as much as possible in the amount of time available. The Slow Tourism course looks into the ethos behind the movement. Guided through the programme by a slow tourism expert, participants will breakdown the concept and explore the mentality behind Slow Tourism. The course also includes street interviews, visits to local attractions and a chance to visit a real Slow town.

OBJECTIVES • Understand the concept and model of

Slow Tourism. • Be able to recognise key fragments of

the movement and design a plan of best practice for any town wanting to adopt Slow Tourism

When you were young did you find yourself opening every electrical device in your home or trying to understand how the wheels on your little car worked? Then this course is for you! After an introduction to the principles of electricity, mechanics and physics, you will attend workshops organised with practising scientists, with a view to understanding how to apply the theoretical principles to production, you will test the product in different environments and you will have to create a business plan in order to market it.Therefore, you will learn the steps of the product life cycle, from the initial creation to the promotion in the marketplace and finally its mass production.

What do you think when you hear the words competition, excitement, high emotions? Probably a popular sport. We would associate those words with an intellectual duel, having a debate. Debating in English teaches you the skills, the strategy and the techniques needed when taking part in a debate – an organised clash of great ideas! Throughout the programme the specially designed workshops give you the tools to feel confident when public speaking through the art of debate; a skill which can be beneficial in all aspects of life.
