Page 2: THE CONCEPT OF V_MIA

V_MIA needs five Working Groups• Architecture has three major Parts:

--Part I : Speech Technologies

--Part II: Machine Translation

--Part III: Information Accessor

One Working Group for each of these blocks.

• All the blocks require language resources such as Corpora, Ontologies, etc.

One Working Group is needed for this• This is a Software Development activity involving

multiple groups at different locations

One Working Group is needed on Systems Engineering and Software Design

Page 3: THE CONCEPT OF V_MIA

Some Data needed before the 7th Meeting on each of the five areas (Blocks) of activity

1. Inputs/outputs of the block? What possible restrictions are permitted/ needed on the inputs for realisability, and how do these affect the overall performance of the VMIA system? What would be considered minimally acceptable?

2. What are the different approaches currently available to realise the blocks? Their relative merits/demerits in terms of performance, complexity (cost), robustness, proven-ness etc? Which of these approaches have seen commercial realisation?

3. What are the subsystems and technologies involved in realising the block? What choices are available at this level?

4. How does Verbmobil perform on the above counts? Would the level of performance and choice of approaches/technologies/subsystems of Verbmobil be considered OK for V_MIA?

5. What is the status of Indian Languages as far as these five areas are concerned? Pl classify the current status in terms of Systems realised and deployed, lab level modules/systems realised, modules/ resources that would be made available for V_MIA usage, theoretical understanding available, etc.

6. Gross gaps between what V_MIA would need and what is currently available in India in each of the five areas? What part of this is bridge-able in say a time frame of 20-25 months through a nationally co-ordinated effort?
