Homeopathy is hard to explain and some may feel that its all 'hog wash' anyway but, as a user myself, I find homeopathy powerful, and wonderfully effective. Homeopathic medicines can stimulate your body's response to heal itself by dealing directly with the sources of your symptoms. Amira, Co-op Owner Though the "home" in homeopathy is really part of the prefix meaning "like cures like," it can also serve as a reminder that simple homeopathy can be practiced by anyone, with a home first aid kit that can travel with you to picnics in the park or camping in the north woods. Though homeopathy is most often used by a practitioner to treat chronic conditions that have proved resistant to more traditional methods, it is easy to make a kit of simple remedies for those minor mishaps that bedevil our precious warm season outings. (While ready-made kits are available online and through your homeopath, it is more economical to simply select from the full line of remedies available in Just Food's wellness aisle). Arnica Montana is familiar to many as a treatment for aches and bruises; it is also useful on cuts and scrapes. The Co-op sells both the cream and pill forms. "My husband was afraid he had wrecked his shoulder, and wouldn't be able to make his Boundary Waters trip," says Jessica Bettinger, receptionist for Vital Force homeopathy practice. Her husband Arlo had injured himself lifting kegs on his job with a local brewery and nothing had worked. "But after only five days of rubbing in arnica cream and taking the pills," says Bettinger," he had no trouble paddling and portaging on that trip." Calendula is good for healing the skin, whether from abrasions and lacerations, or from burns and scalds, or sunburn. "I was taking a pan of lasagna out of the oven, and somehow managed to place both hands on the hot pan" says Sujata Owens, owner of Vital Force homeopathy practice. "I, of course, immediately plunged them into cold water, then slathered on the calendula cream. Not only did I not get blisters, but the pain was also much reduced," she says. Ledum palustra and Cantharis pills are also helpful with burns, and these, along with hypericum, and rhus toxicodendron (commonly called rhus tox) are ideal for insect bites-- including bee stings—and run-ins with poison ivy. In the event of eye injuries, a wash of calendula and hypericum can be applied to prevent infection. (Just Food sells several gels and creams that combine these remedies for a greater range of effectiveness). Bryonia alba is the remedy of choice for heat exhaustion—the loss of fluid due to extreme heat. Nux VOmica can quell the queasiness of motion sickness, whether on land or water if taken preventively about an hour before travel. Though remedy dosages do vary, the dose available at Just Food—3oC—is the one recommended for most first aid uses. The pills are dissolved under the tongue, and should be taken about an hour before mealtime for maximum absorption. They do not need refrigeration, but should be stored away from moisture and strong odors.
