The Complete Works for the Lute by Nicolas Vallet The new photographic reproduction of the four lute books by Nicolas Vallet, originally printed in Amsterdam between 1615 and 1620, is a giant leap forward in respect to the former facsimile edition of the 1980s. Perfect scans in high resolution bring a mass of details to lutenists, musicologists and all other persons that are interested in music and music print in the early Dutch seventeenth century. All the additions Vallet made for the performance of his music are clearly visible: example 1, Secret des Muses, p. 63. The same goes for corrections that have been made in the engravings: example 2, Regia pietas, p.3, line 4, bar 5 (the letter f on the top line of the tablature is erased and replaced a line lower)

The initials that precede all the pieces in the four lute books are miniature works of art in itself. They have all been engraved with different pictures, often with a lute player in it. The high resolution of the scans of the new photographic reproduction allows a clear view on all these little artistic creations:

example 3, some initials with lute players in it

A special place in the second book of the Secret des Muses was arranged for the lute quartets. These pieces could be played by four performers just from one book. The different parts were therefore placed opposite to each other:

example 4, Est-ce mars, arranged for four lutes.

Perhaps the most subtle pieces out of Vallets oeuvre are his 21 settings of psalms for voice with lute accompaniment:

example 5, 21 Pseaumes de David, p35.
