    News and Updates

January 5th, 2009 - I did a thorough grammar/spell check of the entire guide, which was long overdue. I also re-did the Table of Contents, and removed a fewsections that I deemed no longer necessary to the guide (mostly thetheory/speculation sections). I did a little bit of updating in the Birth By Sleepsection. There are a few pictures which had broken links which I removed andwill replace as soon as I can.

    Chapter 1:

    Kingdom Hearts

    1.1 The Facts

    A | Opening Cinema

The original Kingdom Hearts begins with a computer generated cinema of Sora, the young protagonist of the story, drifting in a foggy, submerged darkness. Hesays, "I've been having these weird thoughts lately. Like, is any of this for real?Or not?" He continues to drift and then suddenly awakens on the beach ofDestiny Islands, his home. Riku, Sora's long-time friend, is standing knee-deep inthe ocean, staring off into the horizon as if in a trance. Sora takes a step towardhim and the tide recedes quickly creating a tsunami which engulfs Riku as heturns and faces Sora, hand outstretched. The two are forced underwater by thetsunami and separated when the current pulls them in opposite directions. Thetime changes from midday to sunset and Sora emerges from the water to find

Kairi waiting for him on the shore. They smile, and Kairi, startled, noticessomething falling from the sky. Sora turns around to look, and sees what appearsto be his own body falling like a meteor from the clouds towards the ocean. Both"Soras" fall into the ocean, merge into one, and continue cascading to the depthsof the deep blue. He lands on a dark floor, which bursts into a sparklingfirecracker of doves which fly into the distance. The dark floor, now revealed inlight, is a stained-glass panel of Snow White and The Seven Dwarfs.

B | Dive to the Heart

Dive to the Heart is the curious location where Sora decides where his strengthsand weaknesses will lie. There are also a good deal of Heartless in Dive to theHeart*, including Darkside, an extremely large Heartless who returnscontinuously as a boss throughout the story.

*Pictured below, Sora falling to it, with bubbles trailing behind, signifying beingunderwater.

In Dive to the Heart, the very first thing Sora sees is Snow White*, SleepingBeauty*, Cinderella*, and Belle*, four of the seven Princesses of Heart who laterin the story are revealed as vital to completing the final keyhole of Hollow Bastianwhich leads to Kingdom Hearts. Maleficent, the "leader" of the Heartless, needsall seven Princesses of Heart to complete the keyhole. Knowing Kairi is one ofthe seven, Maleficent, one of the main antagonists in the story, tricks Riku intohelping her kidnap Kairi so Kingdom Hearts can be opened.

*Pictured below, from top left clockwise: Snow White, Sleeping Beauty, Belle,

    Cinderella. (Picture Being Replaced)

C | Destiny Islands and The Secret Place

Destiny Islands* is home to what Sora, Kairi, Riku, and Wakka call The SecretPlace - a small cave in the side of the island. Inside is a plethora of boulders anda mysterious door that no one can figure out how to open. Occasionally, a

strange deep voice coming from within the door talks to Sora, who seems to bethe only one who can hear it. One evening, the voice warns Sora about variouspremonitions, and tells him that he understands "very little" about thosepremonitions. That evening is the last that Sora will spend on Destiny Islands fora long time.

*Pictured below, via a sky shot. (Picture Being Replaced)

Something important to note, however, Riku's explanation of sharing a paopufruit with another person. The same evening as the conversation with the

    7/32

disturbed voice, Riku tells Sora that when two people share a paopu fruit "they'llremain a part of each other's lives no matter what"*, which holds true when Kairibrings Sora back from the form of a Heartless later in the game.

Later that night, Darkside appears on Destiny Islands, along with a terriblestorm. Sora receives the Keyblade to destroy the heartless that appear on theisland. The sky, is filled with dark clouds and huge chunks of the island aresucked up into the sky during the storm. It is actually not a storm at all, however. It is Destiny Islands being absorbed into The End of the World, theplace where worlds go when their hearts have been stolen away by Heartless.

    D | Traverse Town

The adventure aspect of the game kicks off in Traverse Town* when Sora isengulfed off of Destiny Islands and is awakened by Pluto in an alleyway.

*Pictured below, Sora awakens in Traverse Town.

During his time exploring Traverse Town, Sora meets an assortment ofcharacters, including the two most significant to the storyline at this time, AerisGainsborough and Squall Leonhart, who has changed his name to Leon. Leontells Sora of a wise man named Ansem who lived in his home world, HollowBastion. Ansem, as Leon explains, once studied heartless in his laboratories

there. Sora learns that the Heartless consume hearts, and a keyblade is the only

  • 7/27/2019 The Complete Story and Theories of the Kingdom Hearts Series

    8/32

weapon that can destroy them, and return the hearts to the people and worldsfrom whence they came.

    E | Hollow Bastion

A bastion is a fortified place, a defensive stronghold, or a group that defends aprincipal or belief. So the word bastion refers both to the defensive nature of thecastle, and also to Organization XIII, the group of people who defend their beliefsthere in Kingdom Hearts II. The word hollow means to be void of substance orcharacter, emptiness. With all of that said, the literal translation of Hollow Bastionis: "A group of people defending emptiness." It is also important to rememberthat the game states that Hollow Bastion was once a place of power in theuniverse, the capital, much like Washington D.C. is the capital of the United

States. Its name was not Hollow Bastion when it was a place of power, however.During its time of power, its name was Radiant Garden, and it was ruled byAnsem The Wise. Radiant means to be bright with joy and hope, filled entirelywith light. This means at some point it was a great place that was filled withlight, and at some point, a turning point, it was infiltrated by darkness andemptiness, and a group of people began defending that emptiness.

Radiant Garden, was also home to a secret underground laboratory where AnsemThe Wise and his six apprentices conducted experiments and research on the

behavior of hearts. Around this time, King Mickey spoke with Ansem The Wise, warning him of the potential disastrous consequences of his research. Ansem TheWise discontinued his involvement with the project. Ansem's six apprentices, however, did not agree with King Mickey about ending the research on hearts, and they continued the studies without Ansem's approval. Their researchbackfired like King Mickey predicted and Nobodies of all six assistants were born.

Xehanort, Ansem's first assistant, became a nobody and began calling himselfXemnas, which is Ansem re-spelled with an "X" added. Xemnas and the otherfive assistants who were now Nobodies, formed what is Organization XIII in

    Kingdom Hearts II.

    9/32

Eventually, when Sora and his companions Donald and Goofy reach HollowBastion, where Leon said Ansem resides, they find Riku who forcibly steals thekeyblade from Sora. (see section 1.3 The Formularizations as to why the

keyblade accepted Riku as a wielder).

Later, Sora confronts Maleficent, the evil witch who tricked Riku into giving up hisheart to find Kairi. Riku, however, stabs Maleficent with his new dark-releasingkeyblade synthesized from the pure hearts of six of the seven Princesses of Heart(Kairi is the seventh Princess of Heart and her heart is not in the keyblade, because it is trapped inside of Sora's body and has been ever since the stormynight on Destiny Islands when her heart was taken). Maleficent's heart, nowunlocked by Riku's keyblade, releases all of its darkness, transforming her into a

    giant dragon.

After the Maleficent's dragon form is destroyed, Sora finds Riku who revealshimself as Xehanort's Heartless in possession of Riku's body. Sora and Xehanort'sHeartless fight and Sora stabs himself with the dark keyblade in order to releaseKairi's heart, but ends up releasing his own heart too. When the keybladeshatters, the hearts of the six princesses return. When Kairi's heart returns to herfrom Sora's body, the keyhole to Kingdom Hearts opens because all seven heartsof the Princesses of Heart were finally in its presence.

Sora becomes a Heartless but Kairi's heart resturns him to normal. He then sealsthe newly opened keyhole at Hollow Bastion and finds himself at The End of TheWorld.

F | The End of The World

After a world's heart is stolen by heartless, the physical form of the world isdescended into The End of The World*. The stolen hearts of the worlds werethrown into Kingdom Hearts by Heartless.

*Pictured below, before its destruction when Kingdom Hearts is opened byXehanort's Heartless.

Xehanort's Heartless confronts Sora on Destiny Islands via the portal inside The

End of The World. He rips a hole into the center of the Island where the SecretPlace used to be. Beneath the Island is the World of Chaos, which Xehanortsynthesizes with. It is also revealed that Kingdom Hearts is located there as well.Sora, Donald, and Goofy defeat Xehanort's Heartless, but with his last shred ofstrength, he manages to open the door to Kingdom Hearts, which bursts openwith the light from the hearts of all of the worlds that had been trapped inside. The light engulfs and kills Xehanort's Heartless, and the hearts are restored to allof the worlds, which eliminates The End of The World.

    G | Kingdom Hearts

After Xehanort's Heartless is destroyed by the light from the hearts of the worldslocked inside Kingdom Hearts, Sora, Donald, and Goofy find King Mickey. King

Mickey stays inside of Kingdom Hearts with Riku, and Sora stays outside ofKingdom Hearts so that they can together close Kingdom Hearts again to preventthe darkness from escaping.

Simultaneously, because the hearts of all of the worlds have been released fromKingdom Hearts, including the heart to Destiny Islands, the worlds beginrestoring from the darkness. Kairi, standing on a small patch of sand from thebeach of Destiny Islands which is reforming, is carried away with it in theprocess.

During the ending cinema, Sora and Kairi touch hands one last time and promiseto find each other, and then Kairi is swept off to The Destiny Islands. KingdomHearts begins raining orbs of light, which are actually all of the pieces of DestinyIslands forming back together. One orb of light falls into Kairi's hands*, probablythe paopu fruit she held before Destiny Islands were thrown into The End of theWorld at the beginning of the game during the stormy evening.

*Pictured below, the orb falls into Kairi's hands.

When Destiny Islands is done reforming, Kairi stands on the beach watching thelast bit of Kingdom Hearts sink down into the ocean*.

Just as it submerges, a burst of orbs shoots into the sky* replacing theemptiness in the sky where stars, worlds, used to be.

    H | The Secret Ending

During the secret ending to Kingdom Hearts, Another Side, Another Story, we getthe first glance at The World That Never Was. A hooded figure duel-wieldingkeyblades is on the ground when a group of Heartless appear. The hooded figureis actually Roxas, Sora's Nobody who was born when Sora stabbed himself with

the dark keyblade in Hollow Bastion. Riku is on top of a building nearby, andconfronts Roxas about why he wields a keyblade, and the two fight, but Riku usesthe power of darkness given to him by Maleficent, to prevail over Roxas.

Numerous lines flash across the screen giving hints to the plot of KingdomHearts: Chain of Memories and Kingdom Hearts II including:

    "Where's Sora?"

    "Your Highness! But why!"

"Who is Nobody, you ask? Why, they are the non-existent ones.""Door of light..."

    "Behind the darkness..."

    "ENDLESS."

    "HEARTLESS."

    "NOBODIES."

    "13."

"You are the source of all Heartless."

  • 7/27/2019 The Complete Story and Theories of the Kingdom Hearts Series

    12/32

    "Sora... why?"

"Maybe our journey meant nothing after all."

"His voice... I don't hear it anymore."

"We need to find him.""What is this place?"

"Is this the answer you've been looking for?"

"What took you so long, Kairi?"

"This is the world in its true form."

    "This time, I'll fight."

    "It's not over yet."

    "You are not my concern!"

    "We'll go together."

You can watch the secret ending here.

    1.2 The Fiction

A | Ding Dong The Witch Is Dead?

Maleficent, thought to be dead after Sora defeats the contents of her heart in theform of a dragon at Hollow Bastion, is actually still alive and returns in KingdomHearts II to again spread chaos upon the world.

    1.3 The Formularizations:

    A | Separated

Sora and Riku being separated in the opening video is perhaps a metaphoricpremonition of the fact that Riku crosses to the dark side for most of the game, while Sora does not, and thus they are separated.

B | Kairi Knew All Along

Kairi was waiting on the beach for Sora, as if she knew he was coming, yet shewas completely shocked when he was falling out of the sky.

  • 7/27/2019 The Complete Story and Theories of the Kingdom Hearts Series

    13/32

    C | Deja Vu

The scene where Sora drifts towards Dive to the Heart is exactly the same aswhen Roxas (Kingdom Hearts II) drifts to Dive to the Heart, which implies thatboth Roxas and Sora have been to Dive to The Heart. Although, Roxas was onlythere through Sora's memory of being there.

    D | Under The Sea

Dive to the Heart* might be directly underneath Destiny Islands, for two reasons.Firstly, the word dive is usually associated with water, and the only worlds with

oceans or large bodies of water are Destiny Islands, Atlantica, and HollowBastian. Secondly, Dive to the Heart looks surprisingly similar to where you fightXehanort's Heartless at the end of the game, the entrance of which is a largehole in the very center of Destiny Islands. Also note that the hole which leads tothe World of Chaos under Destiny Islands is in the same location where the doorwithin the Secret Place once was (where Sora would ocassionally hear a voice).Sora also finds Kingdom Hearts in the World of Chaos, which is perhaps in thesame location as Dive to the Heart.

    E | A Key Island

Despite the significance to the storyline, the Destiny Islands are never reallyexplained in-depth. How Sora, Riku, Kairi and the others got there, where theDestiny Islands are, and what their connection is to other worlds is notmentioned. What is known, however, is that the game starts and ends in DestinyIslands.

F | It Takes One To Save One

The evening Destiny Islands is attacked by heartless is when Kairi's heart isstolen from her. It somehow finds its way to Sora, who holds it inside of himthroughout the majority of the game, until it returns to her at Hollow Bastionwhen Sora stabs himself with Xehanort's Heartless' (in possession of Riku) dark-releasing Keyblade. This releases both Kairi's heart and Sora's heart. Kairiawakens, and Sora turns into a heartless. When Sora finds Kairi, however, herheart lends itself to Sora in order to bring him back to human form. This mightimply that the only way it is possible for one person's heart to bring another

person back from being heartless is if the heart being lent can completely fill the

  • 7/27/2019 The Complete Story and Theories of the Kingdom Hearts Series

    14/32

void where the heartless' heart once was. In other words, someone with a notvery strong heart cannot bring someone back to life who had a much strongerheart. Kairi's heart was equally as strong as Sora's, so she was able to bring himback.

    G | A Bridge

A side-note about Traverse Town - traverse mean to travel or pass across, over orthrough and also to extend across like a bridge. This might be symbolic of Soranot being the first or only person to be pulled mysteriously from the DestinyIslands to another world, and in any case implies that there is a connection orbridge between The Destiny Islands and other worlds. Similar to real life, however, bridges can be broken, disconnecting places from one another until the

    bridge is rebuilt.

H | Keyblades Can Not Tell The Difference

When Riku takes the keyblade from Sora and the keyblade does not immediatelyreturn to Sora, it symbolizes that keyblades are not only used by people withgood intentions. This is confirmed in Ansem Report 9, which states "The Keybladeis said to hold phenomenal power. One legend says its wielder saved the world, while another says that he wrought chaos and ruin upon it". This suggests thatkeyblades choose their wielders based on strength of heart alone, not whether ornot the heart is good or evil. So, perhaps at the moment Riku takes the keybladefrom Sora, his strength of heart is greater than Sora's.

Chapter 2:Kingdom Hearts: Chain of Memories and Re: Chain of Memories

    2.1 The Facts

    A | Castle Oblivion

Kingdom Hearts: Chain of Memories takes place in Castle Oblivion*, an evilfortress standing thirteen stories high and twelve stories underground.

The castle's lord is the eleventh member of Organization XIII, Marluxia, or "TheGraceful Assassin". Marluxia makes an appearance in the opening cinema ofKingdom Hearts II as the blonde man with the scyth-type weapon in the whitehallway of Castle Oblivion. Marluxia and Larxene, the 12th member ofOrganization XIII, are trying to overthrow the Organization and make it their ownby using Namin, a special Nobody born from Kairi's pure heart. Namin, a witchof extraordinary powers, has the ability to rearrange, remove, and creatememories. Marluxia and Larxene, being the intimidating figures that they are,

easily order Namin to manipulate Sora's memories.

  • 7/27/2019 The Complete Story and Theories of the Kingdom Hearts Series

    16/32

Sora, Donald and Goofy, after wandering about after the events of the firstKingdom Hearts, stumble upon Castle Oblivion and go inside. They stroll down awhite hallway until they meet a cloaked figure who tells them that they will forget

all of their memories and abilities once they've entered the castle.*

    (Picture Being Replaced)

The hooded figure, Marluxia, gives Sora a deck of cards containing his memories.Marluxia continues by explaining that Castle Oblivion is a mysterious place where

your memories become real again. He also explains that the further up in CastleOblivion that Sora goes, the more memories he loses.

B | Riku and Riku Replica

Simultaneously, Riku, who found a way to escape the Dark Realm of KingdomHearts is in the basement of the castle, trying to reach the ground floor. Vexen, the 4th member of Organization XIII, battles Riku in one of the basement floors

of the castle and steals Riku's DNA or Data, in the process of the fight andcreates a Riku Replica who, unlike the real Riku, is not afraid to use dark powersfreely. Vexen's intention is for the "stronger" Riku Replica to dispose of the realRiku.

The Riku Replica is implanted with fake memories of being on Destiny Islandswith Namin, and thus he believes himself to be the real Riku. Sora, who isimplanted with the same memories of Namin, also believes that she is the onefrom his past on Destiny Islands. After Namin finally meets Sora in person, however, she becomes aware of the fact that what she is doing is wrong, and shetells Sora the truth about his past and how she is not in it.

Namin spoils Marluxia's plans when she tells Sora the truth about his memoryimplants. Marluxia's plan was to brainwash Sora with the memories and thensteal his keyblade and use its power to overthrow Xemnas and the Organization.

C | Liar, Liar, Pants On Fire

Axel, or "Flurry of Dancing Flames" pretends to be allies with Marluxia and

  • 7/27/2019 The Complete Story and Theories of the Kingdom Hearts Series

    17/32

Larxene, and tells them that he will aid them in overthrowing the Organization.Marluxia tells Axel to kill Vexen, who is against their plans at overthrowingOrganization XIII. Vexen, who tries to tell Sora about Marluxia* and Roxas inTwilight Town, is killed by Axel*.

*Pictured below, left to right, Axel and Marluxia.

Axel finally confronts Marluxia and is prepared to kill him, but Marluxia grabsNamin and uses her as a human shield, as to avoid being killed. When Soraarrives, Marluxia and Namin vanish and re-appear on the top of Castle Oblivion.

Once Marluxia was defeated on top of Castle Oblivion, Namin attempts to rescueSora, Donald, and Goofy by placing them all in flower pods which induce anabstract kind of sleep which can restore lost memories. This abstract sleep, however, will also cause them to forget about the events inside Castle Oblivion,or so Namin tells them.

    D | Ansem & DiZ.

Riku finds out that Xehanort's Heartless, who previously possessed him, was

trying once again to take control of Riku's body. Fortunately for Riku, KingMickey was able to stop Xehanort's Heartless from accomplishing anything, andRiku remained himself.

Riku arrives in Twilight Town and meets DiZ (which means Darkness in Zero),who is actually Ansem the Wise, hiding in an old abandoned mansion in theforest. DiZ conceals himself entirely in bandages as not to reveal his trueidentity until his name was entirely cleared of association with the unapprovedresearch continued by his first assistant. DiZ arranges a meeting between Riku

and Namin, but Riku Replica once again has a change of heart and decides tofight with the actual Riku in order to see who is truly stronger. Riku Replica isdefeated, and soon after Namin tells the actual Riku that some of Xehanort'sHeartless will always be in his heart, but he can control that darkness and remainhimself by using it for good to help Sora, Donald, and Goofy* rid the world ofevil.

    2.2 The Formularization

    A | The Flower Pods

The flower pods that Namin puts Sora, Donald, and Goofy in at the end of Chainof Memories are supposed to restore their memories.

    B | The Two Towers?

While Xemnas resides in The Castle That Never Was, within The World That Never

Was, Marluxia and many other members of Organization XIII can be found withinCastle Oblivion. Oblivion means the state of being forgotten or unknown.

    2.4 Important Vocabulary

    A | Oblivion

    1. The state of being completely forgotten or unknown.

    Chapter 3:Kingdom Hearts II

    3.1 The Facts

A | Line The Pieces Up

The Kingdom Hearts II opening cinema starts with the line "A scattered dreamthat's like a far-off memory, a far-off memory that's like a scattered dream. Iwant to line the pieces up. Yours and mine." This entire thing is probably hintingat Sora's connection to Roxas. Firstly, the phrase "scattered dream" is probablyrefering to Sora's abnormal sleep, which Namin has put Sora in during Chain ofMemories in order to restore his memories of Kairi and Destiny Islands. The

phrase "far-off memory" probably refers to all of Sora's memories with Kairi andRiku on Destiny Islands, considering those memories are the farest in the past

    19/32

that we know about right now - we don't know about memories that Sora mighthave before Destiny Islands, if he even has any at all.

Next we see a young Kairi sitting on the beach of Destiny Islands waiting forSora, like she told him she would. Then Sora, Kairi, and Riku are near the bigpaopu tree that they used to sit on during the first Kingdom Hearts - it's aflashback. Suddenly Kairi and Riku turn to dust and blow away in the wind, because they are memories which are now gone. Not long after, the entire islandbursts into dust because it is also a memory, and then Sora is at Hollow Bastion. The scene where Sora stabs himself with Xehanort's Heartless' dark keyblade isshown, and we see two orbs of light emerge from Sora's chest, which are Sora'sheart, and Kairi's heart both being released at once.* It is important to note thatboth Roxas and Namin are born at this exact second. Xehanort's heartlessfinally reveals his true form to Sora as well, and we see him being engulfed in the

    light from Kingdom Hearts.

    *Pictured below.

Another flashback occurs, this time it's of Kairi right after Kingdom Hearts isopened and The End of The World is destroyed while the worlds begin reformingwith their regained hearts. Kairi watches Kingdom Hearts as it submergesbeneath the ocean of Destiny Islands, and then Kairi turns to dust again, being amemory, but reforms as the present older Kairi who is still waiting for Sora toreturn.

Then it jumps to the ending of Kingdom Hearts: Chain of Memories, when Sorareaches the top of Castle Oblivion to find Namin reforming his memories bydrawing them in an art booklet. She draws a flower pod, the device whichrestores memories lost in Castle Oblivion, and it becomes real, surrounding Sora

and sending him into an abnormal sleep* which causes his memories to return.Suddenly, Sora is flying through nothingness, which disintigrates revealing hishome, Destiny Islands. Sora, Kairi, and Riku are shown holding hands on thebeach, which then turns to dust revealing Sora's Nobody, Roxas who is dreamingof falling into Dive to the Heart because Sora's memories of it are returning.

    *Pictured below.

    20/32

Finally, Roxas appears in cloaked form on a mysterious beach, and approachesDiV, once Ansem The Wise. DiV tells Roxas that he has been to see Sora, who issleeping in the flower pod created by Namin in Castle Oblivion. He then asks

Roxas if he remembers his true name, and suddenly Roxas has a series offlashbacks from Destiny Islands, when Kairi calls out "Sora?".

    B | Sanctuary

The song "Sanctuary" by Utada Hikaru which plays during the opening cinemahas information which may also hint at the storyline. Take a look at the lyrics:

"In you and I there's a new landAngel's in flightwonk uoy naht noitceffa erom deen I (I need more affection than you know)My sanctuary, my sanctuary, yeahWhere fears and lies melt awayMusic will tiewonk uoy naht noitceffa erom deen I (I need more affection than you know)What's left of me what's left of me now

    I watch you fast asleep

    All I fear means nothing

snwod dna spu ynam os (so many ups and downs)My heart's a battlegroundsnoitome eurt deen I (I need true emotion)wonk uoy naht noitceffa erom deen I (I need more affection than you know)snoitome eurt deen I (I need true emotion)

You show me how to seeThat nothing is whole and nothing is broken

My fears and liesMelt awaywonk uoy naht noitceffa erom deen I"

The entire song seems to be the ballad of what a Nobody is and what a Nobodywants. Nobodies cannot feel emotion or affection, but they desperately want to,which is in the lines "I need more affection than you know" and "I need trueemotion". Nobodies need a heart to feel emotions and affection so that they canbecome complete or whole which is in the line "You show me how to see thatnothing is whole and nothing is broken". It is also explained in the Ansem

Reports that Nobodies do not care what heart they get or where they get it from,

  • 7/27/2019 The Complete Story and Theories of the Kingdom Hearts Series

    21/32

they just want someone's heart so they can finally emerge from the feeling ofbeing incomplete. So the line "my heart's a battleground" probably refers to theNobodies fighting over who gets a heart, possibly Sora's.

    C | The White Room

People who've played Chain of Memories and Kingdom Hearts II probably noticedthe similarity between The White Room in the abandoned mansion of TwilightTown, and the top of Oblivion Castle.

Namine restores Sora's memories via the flower pod, but she has to draw hismemories on paper first before they can be restored. This might explain why

only the room that she drew in looked like Oblivion Castle. She might havedrawn a picture of her memory of Oblivion Castle, causing the memory to berestored and hence changing the look of the room.

It is important to note that DiZ brought Namin, Sora, Donald, and Goofy toTwilight Town from Oblivion Castle so that Namin could more efficiently restoreSora's memories without interuption. Also, Roxas needed to be in a secureenvironment, so DiZ created the simulation of Twilight Town to occupy him andkeep him away from Organization XIII while Sora's memories are being restored. The simulation Twilight Town where Roxas is, eternally trapped between light anddarkness (hence the everlasting sunset), is invaded by Nobodies via a secretpassage underneath the basement of the mansion (it leads to The World ThatNever Was) before Sora's memories are completely restored. This puts DiZ'splans at revenge against Organization XIII at risk. The only true way to keepSora safe from Organization XIII is for his Nobody, Roxas, to merge back withhim. As Sora sleeps beneath the mansion and regains memories, Roxas hasmany confusing dreams. Nobodies continue to invade Twilight Town, but Sorafinally wakes up from his abnormal sleep in the flower pod beneath theabandoned mansion in actual Twilight Town. He is sent on a journey by KingMickey* and Yen Sid to stop Organization XIII from collecting hearts and also to

find Riku and Kairi. Donald and Goofy are, of course, by Sora's side throughoutthe game.

    *Pictured below in Twilight Town.

    D | The Tower

    22/32

Twilight Town is also home to The Tower, where Yen Sid, Flora*, Fauna*, andMerryweather* reside. The only means of getting to The Tower from TwilightTown is by train, as The Tower seems to be on a floating chunk of land in the

middle of nowhere. It is here that Sora recieves his three drive forms and learnsof The Nobodies and Organization XIII.

*Pictured below giving Sora his drive forms.

Maleficent, thought to be defeated at Hollow Bastion during the first Kingdom

Hearts after she is stabbed by Xehanort's Heartless and then slayed by Soraafterwards, is revived here as well. She recruits Pete to help spawn her evilplans to obtain a castle from which she can rule the world.

    E | The Secret Passage

Sora, Donald and Goofy, after traveling to numerous worlds and saving themfrom the chaos of Nobodies and Organization XIII, finally return to Twilight Town,

but this time they go to the simulated Twilight Town created by Ansem via themachine in the basement of the abandoned mansion. In simulated Twilight Town,Sora, Donald, and Goofy find the secret passage beneath the basement of themansion which leads to The World That Never Was, Organization XIII's homeworld.

    F | Radiant Garden

Hollow Bastion, even though restored after Kingdom Hearts was originally

opened, is in a state of disarray, as Heartless and Nobodies continually invade theworld* and disrupt the citizens who are trying to rebuild it to its former, muchnicer, state.

*Pictured below, Heartless and Nobodies invade Hollow Bastion.

The task of rebuilding is made even more difficult when Maleficent, now revived,

makes her home at a nearby tower called Villain's Vale Tower which is all butunbreakable, as it is surrounded by a solid wall of heartless and darkness.Ansem's computer system in his laboratory also goes on the fritz and the MCPtries to destroy the city with its own security system, but Sora and Tron defeatthe MCP and save the city, which is then renamed Radiant Garden.

G | The World That Never Was

In The World That Never Was, Sora encounters DiZ, who finally uncovers his factand reveals himself as Ansem The Wise. He attempts to use a machine to trapKingdom Hearts in a digital form so that Xemnas, Xehanort's Nobody, cannotbond with it. Ansem The Wise tells Sora and King Mickey that he was a fool tothink that he could fully understand a heart, and he also apologizes to Roxas,

who had already merged back with Sora, for all the pain he has caused him.Ansem sets the machine up and turns it on but Organization XIII has collected somany hearts that the machine overloads and explodes, killing Ansem The Wise inthe process.

Soon afterward, Xemnas bonds with the remains of Kingdom Hearts notdestroyed by Ansem's machine.

Sora and Riku are seperated from the others and they fight and defeat Xemnas, but are afterward trapped in an empty void. Later, however, they are reunitedwith Donald, Goofy, King Mickey, and Kairi on Destiny Islands. Later we see Sora,Riku and Kairi reading a letter from King Mickey himself. What we do not know iswhat the letter contains.

You can see the ending of Kingdom Hearts II here.

    3.2 The Fiction

    A | Ansem's Laboratory

The underground laboratory, thought by many to be one of Ansem's ideas, wasactually thought of by Zexion, the sixth member of Organization XIII, andAnsem's youngest assistant. His name used to be Lenzo before the researchbackfired and the Nobodies were formed.

    3.3 The Formularization

    A | Maleficent Prevails

The very last time Maleficent is encountered is in The Castle That Never Was,when Heartless begin infiltrating the castle by the thousands. However, thegame never shows her die. All we know is that she planned on taking The CastleThat Never Was for herself as soon as Sora rid it of Xemnas and OrganizationXIII. She may still be alive and well and reaking some more chaos in KingdomHearts III.

Thisevent proved to be a foreshadowing of great disaster to come. Aware of thethreat, another master ordered his three apprentices to seek out Xehanort andhis cohort."

Terra Aqua, and Ventus are in search of a missing KeybladeMaster, Xehanort and his apprentice. Birth By Sleep is a prequel to the originalKingdom Hearts, so expect to see some characters from the first game makeappearances in younger forms.

    B | 358/2 Days

Roxas and Axel were watching the sunset from their usual spot on the station'sclock tower after a long day of collecting "hearts" from the Heartless, as orderedby Organization XIII. When their daily work ended, they often spent their

evenings there. They talked about the day's work and other things over icecream.

"Do you know why the sun looks red as it sinks below the horizon? It's becauseamong the countless colors comprising light, red travels the greatest distance."

"You're just trying to show off, Axel!"

It was idle chatter between two boys without hearts. This is the untold story of Organization XIII's Roxas.

Kingdom Hearts: 358/2 Days, confirmed by Square-Enix at the Tokyo GameShow 2007, is a multi-player adventure game for the Nintendo DS. It will featureRoxas, Axel, and Organization XIII as the main cast of characters.

    C | Coded

Kingdom Hearts: Coded is a single-player adventure game for the mobile phone.

It features Jiminy Cricket, King Mickey, and Sora as the main cast of characters.

The storyline revolves around this scenario:

After the events of the original Kingdom Hearts, Jiminy Cricket returned toDisney Castle to organize his journal. While he arranged his records, his eyes fellupon a page with a mysterious message.

"We must return to free them from their torment."

  • 7/27/2019 The Complete Story and Theories of the Kingdom Hearts Series

    26/32

However, no matter how hard Jiminy tried to recall the source of the text, hecouldn't remember. So the King digitized the contents of the journal and startedan investigation. Within the world traced from the contents of Jiminy's Journal, aboy awoke on Destiny Island. It was the beginning of a new quest for a virtualSora.

    4.2 The Fiction

    A | Mysterious Figure

During the secret ending of Kingdom Hearts II, we see three armored people.Terra and Ven are the two men, and Aqua is the woman. We also see a

mysterious bald man, who, from confirmation of Square-Enix's PSP game BirthBy Sleep, is Master Xehanort.

You can watch the secret ending to Kingdom Hearts II here.

    4.3 The Formularization

    A | Final Mix+

In the secret video of Final Mix+ we see a bald man walking towards threearmored people, the same ones from the Secret Ending of Kingdom Hearts II.This proves that the shadowy figure walking towards the three armored people inthe Secret Ending of Kingdom Hearts II is not Sora.

At any rate, Ansem Report 9 states that "The Keyblade is said to holdphenomenal power. One legend said its wielder saved the world, while another

says that he wrought chaos and ruin upon it." The bald man in the CG cinema isobviously bringing chaos and ruin upon the world, like the Ansem Report 9 says.Additionally, in the first Kingdom Hearts, King Triton from Atlantica says that thekeyblade master is evil. During the Secret Ending of Kingdom Hearts II, one ofthe phrases that flashes across the screen is "Master of Keyblade". So, this baldman might be the Master of Keyblade, who is undoubtedly evil like King Tritonsaid. The fact that King Triton new about the Master of Keyblade being evil in thefirst Kingdom Hearts leads me to believe that the video could be in the past -otherwise why would King Triton say something like that, and how would he knowabout it to begin with unless it had already happened.

  • 7/27/2019 The Complete Story and Theories of the Kingdom Hearts Series

    27/32

Now, there are numerous theories as to who the bald man is (UPDATE: Square-Enix confirmed the figure as Master Xehanort), but the best thing I can recognizeis that it is in fact Xehanort. I say this because of a distinct costume similaritybetween the bald man in the video, and Xehanort's Heartless. Also shockinglysimilar is the entity that comes out of the bald man's body, which stands to hisright. It looks stunningly similar to Dark Riku. This would make sense too, sinceXehanort's Heartless possessed Riku in the original Kingdom Hearts and left partof his darkness inside of him even after he was gone from Riku's body. Let's takea look:

If this theory were true, and Xehanort was the Master of Keyblade at one time, itmeans that when Ansem The Wise found him battered up and without anymemories, he had completely forgotten about being the Master of Keyblade.Perhaps the letter from King Mickey at the end of Kingdom Hearts II tells Sora,Riku, and Kairi that Xehanort is somehow still a live and has regained hismemories of being Master of Keyblade, and now plans to once again bring chaosto the world like in the Final Mix+ video.

Also note that during the Final Mix+ video, "Xehanort", seems to split into two, while walking towards the other warriors. The duplicate Xehanort that came fromthe actual Xehanort's body changes form, however, into what looks like aHeartless or a Nobody, which confirms that Ansem The Wise found Xehanortoriginally, without a heart, yet somehow he remained in human form, notchanging into Nobody or a Heartless (like maybe he was soul-less).

Something confusing, though, is King Mickey shown at the very end of the clipholding the Star Seeker keyblade which Sora does not receive until Kingdom

    Hearts II.

    Birth By Sleep:

Kingdom Hearts Birth by Sleep begins in theLand of Departure, where three Keybladewielders and close friendsTerra, Aqua, andVentus (more commonly known as Ven)train to become Keyblade Masters underMaster Eraqus. To achieve this rank,Keyblade Apprentices must take the Mark ofMastery exam once they come of age. Terraand Aqua take this test together, but whileAqua passes the test, Terra is deemed unfit to become a Keyblade Master due tothe abundant darkness in his heart.

Afterward, a group of mysterious creatures called the Unversed begin to surfacein other worlds, and another Keyblade Master, Xehanort, disappears without atrace. Terra is sent to destroy the Unversed and find Master Xehanort, who hadearlier encouraged him to embrace the darkness in his heart if he desires thestrength to become a Keyblade master. Ven, meanwhile, is goaded into followingTerra by Xehanort's mysterious apprentice Vanitas, against Eraqus's wishes. Aqua

is dispatched by Eraqus to survey Terra and keep him from falling into darkness,as well as to bring Ventus back to the Land of Departure.

Upon arriving in other worlds, Terra, Aqua, and Ventus encounter various Disneycharacters, new and old, fighting off hordes of Unversed along the way. Amongthe characters they meet is Mickey Mouse, apprentice of the sorcerer Yen Sid,who is also on a mission to destroy the Unversed. Terra ends up attracting theattention of several Disney villains, who offer him the whereabouts of MasterXehanort in exchange of assistance for their own dark agendas. Terra reasons

that Master Xehanort is after the seven Princesses of Heartmaidens who lackdarkness in their heartsand encourages Aqua to help them strengthen the lightin their hearts, hoping it will draw Master Xehanort out.

However, Aqua and Ven grow increasingly concerned for Terra when they hearrumors of him committing sinister deeds throughout other worlds. The threebriefly reunite at Radiant Garden, where Aqua meets Kairi, a young girlcontaining a strong and pure light in her heart, and helps strengthen her light.Aqua and Ven also confront Terra, who distances himself from them to keep themout of the way of his increasingly dangerous dark powers. Terra and Aqua try to

    Terra won't fall into darkness.

Terra and Aqua eventually find themselves at Destiny Islands, where theyencounter two young boys, Sora and Riku. Terra sees potential within Riku anddeems him worthy of one day wielding the Keyblade, while Aqua senses strongties with Sora and Riku to Ven and Terra, respectively. Ven, meanwhile, comesacross Master Xehanort, who reveals his intentions to use Ven's heart to create afinal Keyblade known as the -blade, something Master Xehanort says MasterEraqus had known all along. Ven returns to the Land of Departure to confrontEraqus, who tries to erase Ven to prevent Master Xehanort's plans fromsucceeding.

However, Terra, who had been sent there by Xehanort, misinterprets the situation

and attacks Eraqus, teleporting Ven to safety. As soon as Terra realizes his error,Master Xehanort arrives and cruelly kills Eraqus and tells Terra to go to theKeyblade Graveyard, leaving the Land of Departure to be consumed by darkness. At Destiny Islands, Ven once again encounters Vanitas and learns of his hazypast: Ventus was once Master Xehanort's apprentice, but his heart was deemedtoo frail for Master Xehanort to use him as he intended, so he extracted thedarkness in Ven's heart and used it to create Vanitas. As with Terra before him,Ven is instructed by Vanitas to go to the Keyblade Graveyard. Aqua, in themeantime, learns of Eraqus's death from Yen Sid, who tells her to go to theKeyblade Graveyard as well.

Terra, Aqua, and Ventus gather at the Keyblade Graveyard, where the remains ofthe mysterious Keyblade War are found. Master Xehanort appears with Vanitasand reveals his plan to use the -blade to unlock Kingdom Hearts and unleashthe forbidden secrets of the Keyblade War onto the various worlds, as well as touse Terra's body as a new vessel for his own heart so that he may survive longenough to see his plans come to fruition. An epic battle ensues, with Xehanortfreezing Ven, and Vanitas knocking Aqua unconscious. In his rage, Terraunleashes the darkness in his heart, inadvertently allowing Xehanort to unlock hisown heart and successfully transfer it into Terra's body, which results in the birthof a new, younger Xehanort.

However, Terra's mind continues to linger in his discarded suit of Armor, whichcomes to life and defeats Xehanort. Ven, meanwhile, manages to thaw himselfbefore Vanitas can kill Aqua, and discovers his dark counterpart to be the sourceof all Unversed. Vanitas merges with Ven, possessing him and creating the -blade. Aqua awakens under Mickey's care, and the two fight the possessedVentus while he battles Vanitas from within. Aqua shatters the -blade as Vendestroys Vanitas, bringing an end to the Unversed, though Ven's heart is lost in

the process. The destroyed -blade unleashes a burst of light, which consumes

everyone present and scatters them to the corridors of space, save for Terra'sLingering Will, which remains in the Keyblade Graveyard.

Mickey saves Aqua and Ventus and brings them to the Mysterious Tower, whereAqua learns that Ven has fallen into a deep sleep and will not awaken until hisheart returns. Aqua brings Ven back to the ruins of the Land of Departure, whereshe discovers Master Eraqus's Keyblade, and uses it to unlock the Chamber ofWaking and recreates the world as Castle Oblivion from the ruins. After leavingVen within the chamber, Aqua goes to Radiant Garden where she encountersMaster Xehanort still in Terra's body, but having lost some of his memories. Aquathen battles Xehanort who after the fight attempts to unlock his heart, losing hismemories completely in the process.

Soon after, Terra's body starts sinking into darkness, but Aqua dives into thedarkness and saves Terra from disappearing. Realizing her glider won't be able tomake it back through the portal in time, Aqua sacrifices herself by discarding herarmor and using it to guide her glider, Terra-Xehanort in tow, back through theportal leaving herself behind and lost in the Realm of Darkness. Xehanort isdiscovered by Ansem the Wise, ruler of Radiant Garden, and goes on to becomehis apprentice. Ventus's wandering heart finds its way to young Sora, mergingwith the young boy's heart.

    Blank PointsEdit

An unlockable secret ending shows the hearts of Terra and Master Xehanort lyingdormant in Xehanort's body, waiting to see which will control it in the end, withEraqus's heart revealed to be sealed within Terra's. It also shows a recoveredXehanort walking with Braig as Ansem the Wise and Ienzo pass by.

Shortly after the end of Kingdom Hearts II, Aqua encounters Ansem the Wise inthe Dark Margin. Ansem, who had survived the explosion of his Kingdom HeartsEncoder with few of his memories remaining, reveals to Aqua that while darkness

threatens to swallow the worlds again, hope lies in the form of Sora, whoprepares to set out on another journey to help all of those whose hearts areconnected to his.
