Needs Identification

Small businesses created 54.8% of North Carolina’s new jobs in 2004-2005. With

national unemployment at almost 8%, it is critical that North Carolina maintain its

employer base. Therefore, as small businesses employ over half the workforce, the

success of these businesses is vital to North Carolina and its economy.

Research has shown that only 5 out of 100 small businesses succeed past five years.

The costs of these failures in terms of job loss and the economic hardship of itsowners and employees after failure are obvious. As large employers are laying off

thousands of workers, our small businesses can provide the impetus to halt the

economic recession and stabilize our economy.

The biggest difference and success indicator, between businesses that fail and those

that succeed, is the amount, type and degree of planning that goes into a business.

Having a detailed business plan is probably the best indicator of longevity and

profitability in any enterprise. Yet many entrepreneurs jump into business with little or

no solid planning and/or don’t revisit their plan as circumstances or conditions change.

The Complete Business is offering its services to guide business owners through the

process, so that they may operate within a sound infrastructure, with appropriate

resources and a solid marketing plan. Our intent is to improve the success rate of

small businesses.

Background

The Complete Business was founded in 2009 to help local small business owners

and entrepreneurs launch and grow their businesses successfully in the midst of

the economic recession. It began as an idea between founders Sandra Hagen,

Najah Wallace, Jessica Sabatini and Ina Stanley, who were fellow members of a

local networking group. Driven by the determination to help local business owners

who were struggling to get their start-ups off the ground, the 4 ladies devised a

strategic plan that would offer their comrades the education and services they

needed in a cost-effective manner. It has since developed into a full small business

assessment, coaching and consultancy firm, offering consultation, training and

educational small business materials in Web and print format to business owners

and entrepreneurs across the country.

Production Specs ___________________________________________________________________________________________________

Print

Images for offset/digital printing should be of 300 dpi, but we can work with as low

as 220 dpi. Under 220 dpi and you will start to see the pixels in the print. Remember

recommended dpi refers to the effective resolution, not the resolution number given in

Photoshop. If you have a 300 dpi, 5x7 image that you use in a layout at 200% the

effective resolution is only 150 dpi, not enough for good print quality. On the flip side, if

you have a large 72dpi image (meant for web) that you scale down to 25% of its

original size; the effective resolution is 4 times the file's dpi. This means your document

resolution should be set to 300 dpi to allow for the extra resolution needed for the

images. Most layout programs include the dpi settings in the preferences for the program

(edit>preferences) or the resolution is set when you make a new document

(file>new document).

Terms to understand

• Pixels per inch (ppi) - Pixels are the individual elements that make up a digital file.

• Dots per inch (dpi) - A measure of output resolution rendered by printers

Web & Video

All images should be .png or .jpg format with no less than 96 dpi. Note that we accept

.gif and .bmp formats, but these will not produce the best quality for your ad. Format

conversion is available, though this may also alter the quality of your image.

For Platinum Sponsorship: If you have video for your video-based ad space, video

must be in .wmv, .mov or .mpg formats. File must be less than 10 MB.
