Just a ThoughtWe seem to be going through quite a difficult time in the country at present andeverything seems to be unsettled and unsettling. In a time of uncertainty it is goodto remember the words of the murdered MP Jo Cox who said that we had morethings in common with others than things that divide us. The one unchanging thingwe, as Christians, have is our faith in a God who loves us and shares our pains andconcerns. People often turn to prayer in times of crisis and God loves us and wantsus to bring our joys and sorrows, our problems and successes to him. Prayer is avital part as our lives as Christians and the life of the church. It is in the church thatwe bring to God the needs all those people who have asked us for prayer as well asthe needs of our community, our country and the world. Remember that God’s helpis only a prayer away.

BENTLEY BOWLS CLUB.The season is almost finished with only seven more games to play. We are doingwell in the Samford League losing just one of our games, so are top of the league atthe moment. In the Triples League we are not faring so well only winning three of our elevengames and are currently sitting third from bottom in this league. Our last triples gameat Bramford was delayed due to a heavy hail storm, the green had to be cleared ofthe hail, so we didn’t finish until quite late but at least we got it played. We have played our club triples competition with John Alexander, Mark Boyland andMartin Porter the winners. We shall be playing the club pairs in the next couple ofweeks. The other club competitions are progressing well.We had to give our Samford Cup competition game away as we could not field a fullteam. Our Captains have struggled this year to field a full side for our games so if anyoneout there would like to try the game of bowls, do come along on Friday evenings from6.30pm when we have our club rollup. The green entrance is in Grove Road behindthe closed shop.Lillian Calvert Secretary 311756.

B e n t l e y CEVC P r i m a r y S c h o o l News

Summer Fete - Thank you to everyone who came along to support the PTA summerfete. We were very lucky with the weather with just a couple of showers towards theend of the proceedings. The children performed the Zumba dance they had beenpracticing at school to open the event and thoroughly enjoyed getting involved with lotsof activities including tug of war and hay bale rolling. Thanks to the support of ourfamilies and the community the PTA are pleased to announce that the fete made a totalof £1582.79. Thank you and well done to everyone involved! Photos on page 16New Arrival – The children and staff alike are very excited about the newest memberof the Bentley Primary School family; one of our chickens, Limpy, has successfullyhatched a chick. As the Father is called Fluffy, the chick is currently being called Flump.Flump hatched on the Friday evening before the summer fete and appears to be doingwell. Our sincere thanks to the Coopers who have lent us a run and house at very shortnotice for this unexpected arrival; the Coopers have a long history of connections withthe school and their continued support is very much appreciated. Photo on page 16Sports Day – Sports day 2016 was a resounding success! We didn’t get drenchedand the events, new and old, proved very popular. We even had a record number ofparticipants for the ladies and gentlemen’s races and the very cute toddler race. Weare all so proud of the children in our school, every single one of them gave it their allin every event they took part in. The scores were the closest they have been for manyyears and congratulations go to the red team who just pipped the yellows to the postto become this year’s winners. Well done to everyone.Dogs on the School Field – The only downside to sports day was that we found dogpoo on the school field right near where some of the events were set to take place. Wewould respectfully remind everybody in the community that dogs are not permitted onthe school field in the interest of the children’s safety and well being. Thank you inanticipation for your cooperation in this matter.Grant received – We are very pleased to confirm that we have received a grant fromCouncillor Gordon Jones for Hi-Vis vests and reflectors for the pupils. Cllr Jonesvisited us a couple of months ago to have a look round at our wonderful little schooland to talk about future plans. He was particularly interested in the local visits that wetake part in and the school’s commitment to the environment. To help with our plansto introduce more walking to school weeks and hopefully a ‘walking bus’ he has kindlydonated some money from his locality budget. We would like to thank Cllr Jones forhis support.Pleasurewood Hills – In recognition of all their hard work, pupils in years 5 and 6were taken on a trip to Pleasurewood Hills this term. There were plenty of shrieks andlaughter and as ever, our pupils represented themselves and the school verypositively. This annual event is heavily subsidised by the PTA to lessen the costs toparents and we would like to thank them for their contribution again this year for thistrip and all the others they have contributed to over the school year. The PTA are anextremely hard working group of people but need more members to share the load. Please speak to one of the existing members if you can spare your time and support, thank you.

Exciting Plans – The end of the school year is always busy and this year has been noexception. The upper end of the school, Years 4 to 6, is planning an exciting trip toParliament and other sights in London, including Westminster Abbey. This is a massiveundertaking as we are taking all pupils from years 4, 5 and 6 from both here at Bentleyand also Copdock Primary. Not to be outdone, the rest of the pupils from both schoolswill be heading to Felixstowe to the beach for the day. These trips are just two of anumber of exciting trips and events that have been taking place this term and come atthe end of an exceedingly good year for the school – with a strong Ofsted inspectionand SIAMS inspection (inspection for church schools) and our numbers swelling, welook back on the year with a huge smile and a well done to all the children, families, community members and staff who make this school such a special place.Final Farewells – Of course, the school would be nothing without our wonderful, hardworking and caring pupils and at this time of year, we find ourselves saying a tearyfarewell to our year 6 pupils as they prepare to transition to High School. Olaf, Tommy,Remmi and Ruben have all contributed to our successes this year and we wish themall the very best as they take their next step in their education. We hope Bentley willalways hold a special place in your memories.

CONSTABLE COUNTRY MEDICAL PRACTICE – PRACTICE UPDATE JULY 2016Patient Participation Group and Patient FeedbackOver the last year there have been many changes at the practice. In addition tochanges in the partnership and other staff, we have also changed our appointmentsystem. Some changes take a while to have an impact on how the practice is perceivedas some patients only occasionally have a need to visit the practice. However, we hopethat our policy of always offering a same day face-to-face or telephone appointment isreassuring and patients understand they can contact us at any time of the day if theyneed access to a clinician. We want to continue to improve the service we offer and our interaction with patients iskey to helping us understand what works well and where we can improve. I thought itmay be useful to summarise how you can improved your interaction with the practice:Most importantly, please ensure we have up to date contact details for you, includinghome and mobile telephone numbers and email address. You can update these via ourwebsite (click on ‘update contact details’ on the home page) or by filling in a formavailable from reception. This will enable us to send appointment confirmations, notifi-cations of test results and other important information we feel you should be aware of.Note that your details are strictly confidential and will only be used for practice purposes. We are further developing our website to ensure that information you need is available. It contains PPG minutes and contact details, news items including regular practiceupdates, information on our appointment system, and the facilities to register as a newpatient and provide feedback. Our aim is to improve the website over the comingmonths to ensure it contains up to date and useful information. We will also beintroducing a twitter feed to inform patients of incidents, such as power cuts, or eventssuch as flu clinics. The PPG has been operating for over a year now and we are lucky to have such anactive PPG. They meet monthly and discuss the day to day operation of the practice, new developments and any problems which come to their attention. The PPG are alsoproactive in helping the practice address wider health issues. They recently organiseda very successful presentation on diabetes by Dr Gerry Rayman, and will be organisingfurther events in the year ahead. Their contact details can be found on the website andthey welcome feedback on how the practice is performing. The PPG have provided feedback cards for patient use and collection boxes at Capeland East Bergholt, and these are reviewed regularly. We also have Friends and FamilyTest feedback cards available, and patients can provide feedback via our website andon NHS Choices. We welcome all feedback, though we hope patients will tell us whenthey have had a good experience, not just when they have experienced a problem.Training Days Just a reminder that the practice will be closed from 1.00 pm on thefollowing dates for staff training:15th September 2016 (Thurs), 12th October 2016 (Wed)On these afternoons the doors will be closed so please ensure any prescriptions arepicked up well beforehand. If you phone the practice the recorded message will ask youto ring 111 for medical assistance if your problem cannot wait until the next day.Pete Keeble, Practice Manager

BENTLEY COMRADES

For our June and July meetings we were able to rememberWorld War 1 and the great loss of life that was witnessed. In June Craig Barker gave us an illustrated talk on the Battle ofthe Somme that lasted from July to November 1916. With theaid of PowerPoint he described each of the main phases of the

battle, Day One, Deville Wood and Thiepval Ridge. He provided maps of theareas where fighting took place, the casualty figures and personal stories ofseveral individuals involved. In July Jennifer Jones gave a very detailed talk supported by PowerPoint picturesof her research and visits to the World War 1 memorials. Having received aWomen’s Institute bursary she had set out to trace all of the fallen named on thewar memorials within the North Samford Benefice. Her journeys through thebattlefields of France and Belgium provided a wide range of pictures and includedmany supplied by the Commonwealth War Graves Commission. At Jennifer’ssuggestion a collection was made to provide a donation for Help for Heroes.Bentley Comrades is a gathering of ex-service personnel and those interested inthe British Armed Forces. We usually meet on the first Wednesday of each monthin the Village Hall Committee Room, supply our own refreshments and eachmake a contribution towards the hire of the hall. HEALTHWATCH SUFFOLK STRENGTHENS ITS INFLUENCE IN 2015/16 TO MAKE A DIFFERENCEFOR SUFFOLK RESIDENTS

Healthwatch Suffolk makes sure that your voice is heard to improve health (NHS) andsocial care services in Suffolk. It has published its annual report for the year 2015/16,which shows the difference that has been made throughout the year for people usingservices in the county.2015/16 has seen Healthwatch Suffolk continue to raise its profile in the county, reaching more people for their views than ever before. It launched a new website forobtaining views from people and well over 3,000 people have already rated their care.It also completed high profile research projects including innovative work with hospitalsto listen to the needs of mums and birthing partners who had accessed maternityservices.A number of notable outcomes are highlighted, including the following examples:

·   Ipswich Hospital  revised  its  policy  to  allow birthing  partners  to  stay with mumovernight so that they might provide much needed support with baby care andemotional wellbeing.

·   It visited seven care homes to talk to residents about their care and treatment.Recommendations were made which have led to a good number of improve-ments in services.

·   It influenced the decision to slow down the implementation of new domiciliary careservices in the county so that people could have more time to make betterdecisions about how they wanted their care to be delivered.

·   West Suffolk Hospital  improved  support  and  information  for  carers  and  implemented actions to address concerns about poorly coordinated care for patients atthe end of life.

·   Ipswich Hospital took action to address negative feedback about the way it hadtreated a patient with end term cancer.

·   The Care Quality Commission worked closely with Healthwatch Suffolk to hearthe views of local people when inspecting local services.

For more information about Healthwatch Suffolk; it’s current projects and most recentoutcomes, please visit www.healthwatchsuffolk.co.uk where you can download a copyof the annual report or take a few moment to watch it’s supporting video. You can alsouse the website to share your experiences of health and social care services in thecounty so that they can be used to shape local services now and for the future.

RICK SEAL TROPHY.On Wednesday June 8th we held our home match against Capel St Mary for the RickSeal Cup. This is an annual event when we encourage all club members to play. Thisyear we won all four mats after some very close games and won the cup back fromCapel St Mary. After the matches were played we had a very nice tea followed by a raffle. Thank youto everybody who so generously donated prizes for the raffle. At the end of the afternoon we were able to donate £111.00 to Cancer Research thisamount was raised from fees to play and the raffle.A very happy afternoon was had by all and we look forward to playing away at CapelSt Mary in six months time.Friendly Match against Harkstead Carpet Bowls Club.On Tuesday June 28th we held a friendly match against Harkstead Bowls Club. It wasgreat to play a game when all pressure was off and we could all enjoy the gamealthough sometimes the meaning of “friendly” was slightly forgotten, although therewas lots of friendly banter from the sidelines!! Both Clubs won two matches butHarkstead were the overall winners on shots. Well done Harkstead. We concluded the evening with refreshments a raffle and lots of chatter. We now lookforward to playing Harkstead away later in the month.Jill Mills - Chairperson

Since the last report six more Summer League matches have been completed, and weare still seeking our first win. However some of these matches have been very close and some not  so close, butpoints have been scored in all of them except one.It is to our credit that we are able to put out a full team for each match unlike some of ouropponents, who come short and play their best players twice!!!It continues to be a steep learning curve for some our members who did not play in ourWinter League campaign, but they have done well and have soon realised the applica-tion and concentration needed against first division opposition. We still have matches against Bealings, Belstead, Brantham and Copdock to completethe Summer League fixtures by the end of August.David Howe (Captain)

FRIENDS OF CAPEL LIBRARY

We now approach the Summer Holidays, with the Reading Challenge. Currently we arelooking further ahead, and hoping to establish a community cinema in 2017. InSeptember we shall have an astronomical event, watch out for the posters advertisingthis. Note too that there will be advantages to being a member of the Friends when weorganize these events. I mistakenly suggested that the first prize in our 100 Club was£25 last month. We need a few more members to reach that level! This month’swinners are Di Barker £15 Alison Stewart £5 Clive Powell £5.Chris Yule

Village HistoryHOW MANY BENTLEY FAMILIES SPENT THE SUMMER HOLIDAYS 1886-1961?

Holidays were originally in the Middle Ages holy days when the faithful were notsupposed to work. Over four centuries later in 1886 they were coming to mean timeoff work spent away from home. During the Summer Holidays that year onWednesday, 25th August, some Bentley Villagers possibly boarded the GreatEastern Railway's day excursion train to Hastings from Ipswich when it stopped atBentley as early as 4.57 am.But no farm worker is likely to have done so as a 3rd class ticket at seven shillings(35p) cost more than half his weekly wage. Instead he and probably any children asyoung as 11 (year 6 in today's system) would have taken the chance to work thelonger hours available gathering the harvest and increasing the limited familyearnings. Indeed until 1932 the Bentley School Head teachers call the holidayusually lasting about six weeks in July, August and September "the HarvestHolidays".In World War One with many farm workers serving in the Forces the demand forchildren's labour was greater than ever, so much so that in 1918 the SchoolAttendance Officer had to visit the parents of under - 12s among the six boys andthree girls still "picking potatoes" after the School Holidays. In the 1930s a holiday away from home was rare because of the high costs involved. They included wages forgone and money for travel to and from the destination andfor accommodation and food while there. When a lad, Ron Prior (born 1922) couldholiday in Somerset largely because he stayed with a gamekeeper uncle and wentby train for little or nothing as his father, a railwayman, could use free passes. The 1938 Holidays With Pay Act was a great advance that Trade Unions pressed forand employers favoured as workers' productivity improved. However, it proved morebeneficial after the 1939-45 War and the post-war years of austerity when manyitems were rationed including petrol until 1950.In 1955 when 96% of UK manual workers were entitled to two weeks' paid holiday,Bentley contained several railwaymen - the mainline station stayed open for anothereleven years - but very few farm workers. Yet its population was fast rising, up nearly18% to 568 between 1951 and 1961 as many newcomers, working outside theVillage for higher pay and shorter hours, moved in. In 1961 they took some of the 34million UK and foreign holidays of four or more nights enjoyed by Britons, up 26% onten years before.John Tombs - Village Historian

CAPEL SURGERY TRANSPORT SCHEME

The scheme appears to be working well, with as many as four pickups in a week.We now have a number of volunteers who ferry people to and from both Capel andBergholt Surgeries. Looking at the pickups it becomes clear that something like 40%are from Washbrook and Bentley. It would be good to welcome some volunteersfrom both villages to the scheme, if only to save the Capel volunteers from fourjourneys rather than just two. If you are prepared to volunteer please ring me on310992, and I will explain how the scheme works. More volunteers means feweroccasions individuals get called!Chris Yule
