A lot has happened in the past 10 years in our City a new mayor, the rebirth o downtown, new businesses and growth within USC, toname a ew. Less happily, we have lost some o Columbias gems. Ona personal note, in these ten years, we, too, have experienced lies upsand downs birth, death, divorce, marriage, illness and miracles. But,as involved community members, we are keeping our ocus on helpingour ellow Columbians by shopping and supporting local businessesand service providers. Tips or Wavy or Layered Hair

WAVY This hairstyle eatures sot, bouncy waves allover. Create this hairstyle by rst applying a curl-en-

hancing cream or gel and a heat protectant to damphair. Blow dry the hair using a diuserattachment and just your ngers to shape and positionthe hair. Once the hair is completely dry, you can addall-over waves using a medium-barrel curling iron.Roll up small sections o hair in the curling iron andhold in a vertical position or about 2030 seconds, oruntil the hair in the curling iron eels hot to the touch.

LAYERS Layers are a great addition to any haircut.

They help to add movement to a style, reducebulkiness and can sometimes make styling easier. Iyou have extra-rizzy or thick hair, you will want togo with very long layers as short layers do not work

well with rizzy hair. A very popular trend today is toget a short to medium length haircut with very longlayers added throughout. The short shag hairstyle, similar to Meg Ryans in When Harry met Sally, ismaking a comeback this year. It has that heavylayered-looks like you grabbed the scissors and started

cutting your hair every which way look that can beworn in a short or medium length.

Travel WiseLets Get Packing!by Cathy Kline, The Columbia Notebook

The countdown is over; that abulous vacation youvebeen dreaming about starts tomorrow and all you havelet to do is pack!

Whether packing or a cruise ship or the limitations oan airline luggage policy, make sure every item in yourcase counts.

Lets start with the basics. You can check the weather, but it doesnt come with guarantees. A general idea othe temperature should be helpul, though.

Is there a beach in your near uture? Pack two (ormore) swimsuits, a beach cover-up or oversized T-shirt(also does double-duty as a nightshirt), easily rinsed-o

sandals and think about buying your sun protectionwhen youve reached your destination. Casual khakiscan go rom daytime through evening with the rightchange o top, and a lightweight jacket can helpcounter any evening chill orocean breeze.

Cruise ship? Dont orget some (comortable) heels togo with your evening wear, since now is the perecttime to pack that little black dress you simply knewyoud need. A second cocktail dress can help balance

out every other dinner or event. Remember thatrolling them beore placing them in your suitcase otenreduces any need to have wrinkles in them steamed orpressed out, plus rolling clothes saves space.

Flying to an exotic location? Check the current TSAguidelines or toiletry containers and contents, andbe sure to add some extra plastic bags to protect yourclothing rom any pressure-induced spills.

When selecting your delicates or any vacation, opt

or the quick-drying handwashable pieces or underyour clothing. There are plenty o nooks and cranniesin a cosmetic bag, suitcase pocket or even your beachbag that can hold spare undies when you want to savethe bulk o the empty room in your carrier or yourmain wardrobe.

Consider any special excursions you may have booked, and keep those in mind beore youve maxed out thespace in the suitcase. A trek into the rainorest begsor lightweight long sleeves and pantlegs with sturdy

hiking boots, while a dance foor demands the sheerestnylons and a skirt that emphasizes your grace.

And just beore you pull that zipper closed, make sureyouve packed your spirit o adventure. Its the rstitem worth donning when you reach your destination!

Keys to an Organized DivorceHelping Your Lawyer Help You

    by Stephen R. Fitzer, Esquire,

    Attorney at Law

I you are convinced thatseparation, or even a divorce,

may be the only solution toyour marital woes, it makessense to speak with anattorney beore youdeclare your intentions toyour spouse.

Being organized is criticalin such matters, so be sure to gather the ollowinginormation to share with your attorney at the verybeginning o your consultation: detailed records oyour assets and debts; income and expenditures; andthe needs o your minor children.

Be prepared to provide the tax returns rom themarriage, the latest pension and retirement accountstatements, bank account, credit card, mortgageand car loan balances, and lie insurance policy andbeneciary inormation. Decisions will need to bemade about whether your case should include alimony,

who will be the custodial parent o the children, whatthe proposed visitation schedule should be or the otherparent and whether any restraining orders are needed.

By the way, does your spouse have access to your emailor social networking accounts?

When and where were you married; when and wheredid you last live together; and where does your spouse

live and work now? I there are skeletons in the closet, are they locked away or open or view?

Look or an attorney who has time or you and is agood listener, but be ready to accept his instruction andadvice about whats important and whats not. A goodlawyer is always thinking ahead to a nal divorce orthe separation hearing, when it will be important thatyou impress a judge with your ability to answer pointedquestions consistently and clearly.

This article is intended to provide general inormation and does

not constitute legal advice. This law frm makes no guarantee asto the outcome o any case. Each case is reviewed and evaluated

on its own merits. Please note that this inormation does not

create an attorney-client relationship. Always insist on a written,

express agreement o representation signed by you and yourattorney.

Shape versus Size: Which Matters?by Ram Kalus, MD, Plastic Surgery o the Carolinas

Actually, when considering breast enhancement, both are important. But most women reportthat they are more concerned with shape than with size. In our practice, a natural look is

what women seek; unortunately too many women who undergo breast enhancement surgerylook as though they have had surgery, with either a high round articial appearance or a

disproportionately large breast size, neither o which is desirable i the goal is to be discreet.Ideally, only the patient (and whomever she chooses to tell) and her surgeon should know thatshe had surgery. This is as true or breast enhancement as it is or any other plastic surgery, be iton the ace, breast or body.

Specically, regarding breast augmentation, achieving a natural slope to the upper pole o thebreast rather than an exaggerated round appearance depends on at least three things: the implantshape; the implant size; and the proper placement or positioning o the implant within thebreast. Placing the implant underneath the pectoralis muscle is most commonly recommendedand this maneuver alone can increase the upper pole ullness which many women desire.

But too large an implant or an implant resting too high on the chest can result in an articialappearance.

Today there are more breast implant options than ever beore or women considering breastenhancement surgery. In 2006, the FDA concluded that silicone-gel-lled breast implants wereentirely sae even or cosmetic breast augmentation, giving women the choice o saline-lledversus silicone-gel-lled implants. With proper and careul selection, both types o implants canresult in a very pretty and natural appearance. Most patients and surgeons alike agree that thesilicone-gel-lled implant eels a bit more natural than the saline-lled implant, which has a bitmore o a water bag eel.

Just this year, the FDA approved the release by the three main breast implant manuacturers oanatomically shaped Gummy Bear or orm stable implants that can be used to give a morenatural and less articially round appearance to the breast (see accompanying photo).

From let to right: round silicone-gel-flled, round saline-flled, and anatomically shapedGummy Bear silicone breast implants

I the skin envelope is very loose or i the nipple/areola is positioned low on the breast, whichmight be the case ater one or more pregnancies, a breast lit or mastopexy may be necessary, either alone or in conjunction with a breast augmentation. An augmentation by itsel can neverbe a substitute or a true breast lit i the breast has too much sag or droop.

Although most women can expect a beautiul result with a round silicone-gel-lled implant, the newer anatomically shaped implants may provide a more natural-appearing enhancement. The optimal implant shape and size or any given patient and whether or not a breast lit mightalso be required needs to be determined on an individual basis ater careul evaluation anddiscussion with the patient about her own expectations. Such a consultation should always occur

with a board-certied plastic surgeon with extensive experience with breast surgery.

For more information, please visit www.PlasticSurgeryCarolina.com or schedule yourconsultation with Dr. Ram Kalus at Plastic Surgery of the Carolinas in Charleston/MountPleasant by calling us at 843-881-3881.

Are You Hal o a Hot Couple?

by Dr. Jandrette Rhoe, Certifed Sotto Pelle Physician, Midlands Medical Wellness Center

No matter how discreet women try to be, sometimes a hot fash will strike with little warning andbe evident to an intimate companion. A little understanding is appreciated at times like these, butsometimes sympathy or consideration goes a little arther. It can set us back immensely to have a maleriend admit, Oh, I get those too! as i one-upping us at our own hormonal stage. But the act is: itsquite possible he knows exactly how youre eeling because he may suer rom themas well.

A recent study by Harvard conrms that some men suer rom the same symptoms as women: asudden eeling o warmth or fushing that is most intense over the head and trunk, oten accompaniedby visible redness o the skin and by sweating, which can be prouse. Hot fashes are most common atnight. They are usually brie, averaging our minutes, but oten leave cold sweat behind. Flashes maybe inrequent and mild or quite troublesome, sometimes occurring six to 10 times a day. Some people, both male and emale, report anxiety, palpitations or irritability.

Hormonal balance can be the solution to both men and womens hot fashes. So i your male riendis relating a little too well to your discomort, suggest that he join you in a rank conversation witha board-certied physician who can suggest a solution such as bio-identical hormone replacementtreatment (BHRT).

Dr. Jandrette Rhoe, owner o Midlands Medical Wellness Center, is a Sotto Pelle-certifed physician, trained

in the evaluation and management o BHRT. All procedures at Midlands Medical Wellness Center are

perormed by a physician. We care about our patients and do not require any annual contract or monthly ees.

PET HEALTH TIPSAs responsible pet owners, it is important that we payspecial attention to our urry companions well-beingduring the winter.

Antireeze is highly poisonous. Although it smellsand tastes good to your pet, it canbe lethal.

Rinse and dry your dogs paws ater a walk where

rock salt has been used to melt ice on sidewalks. Provide plenty o resh water. Pets can easily

get dehydrated in the winter, just as during thesummer.

To prevent rostbite on your pets ears, tail andeet, dont leave them outside or too long whentemperatures dip below 40 degrees.

Be very careul o supplemental heat sources.Fireplaces and portable heaters can severely burnyour pet. Make sure all replaces have screens and

keep portable heaters out o reach.

Pets, like people, seem to be more susceptibleto illness in the winter. Take your pet toa veterinarian i you notice any suspicioussymptoms.

Dont use over-the-counter medications on yourpets without consulting a veterinarian.
