I am thrilled to welcome you to The Colonial’s 2011-2012 season – a wide sampling of the human spirit delivered in song, dance, spoken word, theatre and moving image by world-renowned artists.

As a nonprofit organization we rely on the support of individuals and

businesses to bridge the gap between programming costs and income from ticket sales. It is this vital link that allows us to offer a diversity of world class

cultural options throughout the coming year – from sizzling Cuban

import Kings of Salsa to NPR icon Ira Glass, to modern dance legend Martha Graham Dance Company. The variety continues with eclectic popster Bruce Hornsby, trailblazing comediennes Lily Tomlin and Joan Rivers, and enriching programs like multi-Grammy winning jazz vocalist Dianne Reeves and Met Opera Live in HD – new this year to The Colonial lineup.

We are committed to bringing you the finest artists from across the globe in a first-class setting, but we can’t make good on that promise without the ongoing investment of the community we serve. I constantly try to be a role model for the girls I coach.

Traditionally, nuclear plant operations has been a male-only

industry, but I was able to break through that. I’ve been

volunteering as a cheerleading coach for six years now. I know,

because of my actions, the girls I coach will look back at me and

say, “OK, look at what Michelle’s done. She’s been able to make

this great career for herself and overcome adversity to get there.”

About The Colonial TheatreThe Colonial Theatre is a non-profit performing arts center entertaining more than 50,000 patrons annually (including 8,000 school children), with acclaimed film, music, theater, and dance performances. The historic 900-seat theatre, built in 1924 and undergoing a major restoration in the 1990s, was named to the New Hampshire State Registry of Historic Places in 2004.

Pursuing its vision to “be the model regional performing arts center, exciting, educating and challenging audiences of all ages,” The Colonial Theatre presents diverse and relevant programming, including its trademark live performance series, award-winning films, and innovative community outreach programs; additionally, The Colonial Theatre plays host to numerous community events for the benefit of more than a dozen local non-profits each year.

Through the activities of the Education and Outreach program, The Colonial Theatre seeks to provide an enriching, quality arts experience for everyone, regardless of age. The cornerstone of the Education and Outreach program is our student matinee series - high quality performances covering a broad range of topics, attended by more than 8000 students each year. Complementing the matinee series are workshops, artist residencies and lecture-demonstrations conducted by professional performing artists, offering the opportunity for patrons of all ages to broaden their understanding and appreciation of the performing arts.

CROSSOVERA route leading from one side of the stage to the other, out of the audiences view. (Ever wonder how someone could exit the stage on one side and appear on the other?)

DARKA time when the theatre is not open to the public. At The Colonial, this can mean being closed for a private event, rehearsal, or maintenance; typically, there are less than 20 dark dates per calendar year at The Colonial.

FOLLOW SPOTUsually, a powerful profile lantern that can be fitted with its own dimmer, iris, colour magazine and shutters mounted in or above the auditorium, used with an operator so that the light beam can be moved around the stage to follow an actor.

DOWNSTAGE1) The part of the stage

nearest to the audience 2) A movement towards

the audience

FLYThe action of lifting an item, like scenery, up (out) or down (in) when attached to the flying system.

GAFF TAPEUbiquitous, sticky, fabric-backed tape. Most common widths are .5' for marking out areas and 2' (usually black) for everything else. Used for temporarily securing almost anything. Originally known as Gaffer’s Tape, from the Gaffer (Master Electrician) on a film set.

HANGThe “hang” or “pre-hang” is a lighting/rigging session – the time when the lighting equipment is hung for a specific performance.

LUMEN / LUMENSA measure of light output from a source. The brightness of video projectors is stated in lumens.

FRESNEL(pronounced ‘Fre-nell’) A type of stage light which produces an even, soft-edged beam of light through a Fresnel lens. The lens is a series of stepped concentric circles on the front and pebbled on the back and is named after its French inventor, Augustin Jean Fresnel (1788-1827). He developed the lens for French lighthouses so that they could be seen further out to sea and could achieve a longer focal length with a lot less glass than a standard plano-convex lens.

GHOST LIGHTA light left burning overnight on stage to keep friendly spirits illuminated and unfriendly spirits at bay. Also believed to keep the theatrical muse in a ‘dark’ theatre, and to stop people tripping over bits of scenery when they come into the theatre in the morning.

RIDER/TECHNICAL RIDERInformation sent to a venue by a touring group detailing lighting, sound, staging and dressing room requirements. Ideally arrives before the group!

SIGHT LINESA series of lines drawn on plan and section to show how much of the stage can be seen by the extreme seating positions in the auditorium. Often marked in the wings as a guide to the actors and crew.

House PoliciesLatecomers will be seated according to the discretion of the house manager. EVERYONE including youth (17 years old and under), children (12 years old and under) and babes in arms must have a ticket to enter the theatre. Video, audio, and/or photography of any performance is not permitted.
