Curatorial Statement

Emerging art photographers face greater challenges than ever before. Ideas and influences are constantly shifting, and with the advent of the internet, the emerging art photography world has become increasingly competitive. While numerous resource books such as LeBook exist with the goal of connecting young commercial photographers with potential clients, sourcebooks specifically organized around connecting art photographers with collectors, exhibition opportunities, or editorial contacts are often limited, if not non-existent.

The Collector’s Guide to Emerging Art Photography aims to give a select group of “emerging” photographers a direct springboard into what is often perceived as an unattainable art world. Each photographer was selected by Humble Arts Foundation’s curato-rial board for the aesthetic and intellectual integrity of their work, producing a tightly curated sourcebook for collectors, gallerists, and photo editors alike.

Photographers were selected from a variety of sources, including blogs, websites and other online venues, and were culled from numerous physical exhibitions internationally. As the internet has allowed thousands of photographers to establish new circles of interest for their work, and has been a treasure trove to many, it is often tiresome to sift through, especially for curators and collectors who are more accustomed to face-to face methods of interaction. That said, The Collector’s Guide to Emerging Art Photography attempts to organize this maze of new photography and bring some of the most notable images to the forefront of the collector’s gaze.

Introduction

Providing an escape from the mundane, The Collector’s Guide to Emerging Art Photography curated by Humble Arts Foun-dation is a comprehensive introduction to unseen work. The guide gives its audience a complete snapshot of what is fresh, daring and innovative in photography today. It is a reflection of art photography and its response to the contemporary world.

The Collector’s Guide showcases a range of international photographers, from Korean photographer Jeongmee Yoon’s examination of “the trends in cultural preferences and the differences in the tastes of children (and their parents) from diverse cultures…” to American photographer Corey Arnold’s playful exploration of fishing in the arctic territories.

From the social critique of Cara Phillips’ haunting Singu-lar Beauty series to Amy Elkins, Will Steacy and Rachael Dunville’s subtle and mysterious contemporary portraiture, Humble smartly curates works for the curious collector. Many of these featured artists have gained significant recognition via awards and gallery affiliations. Amy Stein, for example, was awarded “best book” at the 2008 New York Photo Festival, and Alejandra Laviada had her first New York solo show at Danziger Projects last October.

The Collector’s Guide serves as a crossroads of art and commerce. It is a place where emerging artists express their newest ideas and boldest techniques, and share them with collectors like myself. Through its cutting-edge approach, The Collector’s Guide provides a valuable art-market resource by uncovering the most promising new photographers and emerg-ing trends in young photography.

As a collector, I am constantly searching not only for work that is fresh and promising, but also something that will look great on my wall. The Collector’s Guide is the perfect tool for col-lectors. It showcases new, inspired work that is engaging and well worth investment.
