Native plantsare more disease resistant and withstand local weatherconditionsbetter. No matter which landscaping plan you choose, weeds will be a problem. A weed, according to thedictionary, is “a plant considered troublesome, uselessor unattractive, especially one growing abundantly incultivatedground.” Weedscangrowanywhere—cracksinconcrete, jointsinthestreet, guttersonyourhouseifdirthasaccumulated, your lawn and their favorite place, your flowerbeds. When you add soil or mulch to your flowerbeds, you are probably addingweedseedsalso.

LANDSCAPINGThere are three ways to eliminate weeds in yourflowerbeds: 1. Eliminate flowerbeds and expand your lawn. 2.Pullweedsbyhand. 3.Useachemicalweedkiller. Doing away with flowerbeds is not the best choice. Although a well-manicured lawn is pretty, flowers add a lot totheappearanceofyouryard.Thebestwaytoeliminateweeds is topullordig themupby the roots. THE COLES CONNECTIONHowDoesItDifferFromTraditionalMedicine? Alternative therapy is frequently distinguished by its holisticmethods, which means that the doctor or practitioner treats the“whole”personandnotjustthediseaseorcondition.Inalternativemedicine,manypractitionersaddresspatients’emotionalandspiritualneedsaswell.This“hightouch”approachdiffersfromthe“hightech”practiceoftraditionalmedicine,whichtendstoconcentrateonthephysicalsideofillness. Mostalternativepracticeshavenotfoundtheirwayintomainstreamhospitals or doctors’ offices, so you or your child’s doctor may not beawareof them. However, newcentersfor integrativemedicineoffer a mix of traditional and alternative treatments. There, youmightreceiveaprescriptionforpainmedication(asyoumightgetfromatraditionalhealthcareprovider)andmassagetherapytotreatachronicbackproblem.Suchcentersusuallyemploybothmedicaldoctors and certified or licensed specialists in the various alternative therapies. Despite the growth in the field, the majority of alternative therapies arenotcoveredbymedicalinsurance.Thisislargelybecausefewscientific studies have been done to prove whether the treatments are effective(unliketraditionalmedicine,whichreliesheavilyonstudies).Rather,mostalternativetherapiesarebasedonlong-standingpracticeandword-of-mouthstoriesofsuccess.

WhatAretheRisks? The lack of scientific study means that some potential problems associated with alternative therapies may be difficult to identify. What’s more, the studies that have been done used adults as testsubjects;thereislittleresearchontheeffectsofalternativemedicineon children.Although approaches such as prayer, massage, andlifestylechangesaregenerallyconsideredsafecomplementstoregularmedical treatment, some therapies - particularly herbal remedies-mightharborrisks. Unlike prescription and over-the-counter medicines, herbalremedies are not rigorously regulated by the FDA.They face noextensive testsbefore theyaremarketed, and theydonothave toadheretoastandardofquality.Thatmeanswhenyoubuyabottleofginsengcapsules,youmightnotknowwhatyou’regetting:theamountofherbcanvaryfrompilltopill,withsomecapsulescontainingmuchlessoftheactiveherbthanstatedonthelabel.Dependingonwheretheherboriginated,theremightalsobeotherplants,evendrugslikesteroids,mixedinthecapsules.Herbsthatcomefromdevelopingcountries are sometimes contaminated with pesticides and heavymetals. “Natural”doesnotequal“good”andmanyparentsdon’tconsiderthat herbal remedies can actually cause health problems for theirchildren.Medicatingachildwithoutconsulting thechild’sdoctorcould result in harm.
