The three of us walk through the tents deciding what we will get to eat for a snack right then and there and what we will take home to fix for dinner. We get to see people from the community that we know and also meet new people. And there really aren’t a whole lot of things better than having a conversation with the peo- ple who cultivated the food you are about to eat. I love to watch the faces of the farmers when they see my children with strawberry juice running down their chins with big silly grins. There is such a sense of pride and accomplishment. Their hard work made that moment possible. The time and effort they put into their crops of fruits and vegetables are providing sustenance for my family. Cultivating is the work of preparing and tending, but this is not solitary work; rather, it depends on the gifts of God in the form of people, materials and places. People thrive when they are able to fulfill their created purpose, which is not limited to the work they do on the farm. We are created for community, with one another and with God. And I see this when the folks from Joseph Fields farms share what the work of their hands has accomplished. As Christians, we are also called to the work of cultivation. We are called to prepare and tend our own souls through works of piety, such as prayer, bible study, holy communion, fasting, Christian community and healthy living. But the work of cultivation is not solitary work. We are also called to cultivate our com- munity through works of mercy, such as caring for the weak and advocating for justice for all people. Our mission is to make disciples for Jesus Christ for the transformation of the world. And that means that our call is bigger than just a having a vital congre- gation. It should be to cultivate a thriving community. So when you buy a peach this summer, hopefully from a local farmers market, think about the work that was put into it and the joy and sustenance you will receive from it. And think about how you as a disciple of Jesus Christ can impact the world in the same way. Happy Cultivating! One of my favorite times of the week is picking up Isaac and Blaine from

daycare on Thursdays and stopping by the North Charleston Farmers Market.

The three of us walk through the tents deciding what we will get to eat for a snack

right then and there and what we will take home to fix for dinner. We get to see

people from the community that we know and also meet new people. And there

really aren’t a whole lot of things better than having a conversation with the peo-

ple who cultivated the food you are about to eat.

I love to watch the faces of the farmers when they see my children with

strawberry juice running down their chins with big silly grins. There is such a

sense of pride and accomplishment. Their hard work made that moment possible.

The time and effort they put into their crops of fruits and vegetables are providing

sustenance for my family.

Cultivating is the work of preparing and tending, but this is not solitary

work; rather, it depends on the gifts of God in the form of people, materials and

places. People thrive when they are able to fulfill their created purpose, which is

not limited to the work they do on the farm. We are created for community, with

one another and with God. And I see this when the folks from Joseph Fields

farms share what the work of their hands has accomplished.

As Christians, we are also called to the work of cultivation. We are called

to prepare and tend our own souls through works of piety, such as prayer, bible

study, holy communion, fasting, Christian community and healthy living. But the

work of cultivation is not solitary work. We are also called to cultivate our com-

munity through works of mercy, such as caring for the weak and advocating for

justice for all people.

Our mission is to make disciples for Jesus Christ for the transformation of

the world. And that means that our call is bigger than just a having a vital congre-

gation. It should be to cultivate a thriving community. So when you buy a peach

this summer, hopefully from a local farmers market, think about the work that

was put into it and the joy and sustenance you will receive from it. And think

about how you as a disciple of Jesus Christ can impact the world in the same way.

Happy Cultivating!

TWIN OAKS SING-A-LONG

Every second Monday of the month, at 3:30 pm, a group of our Cokesbury members gathers at Twin Oaks Retirement Home to lead a Sing-a-Long for the Twin Oaks residents. This monthly outreach min-istry would be delighted to add new voices to their group. No prior experi-ence required. Call Mac Ham for more details.

FOOD PANTRY

Our monthly Food Pantry is held every third Saturday of the month at 9:00 am. If you are aware of anyone in the 29405 or 20418 zipcode who needs food assistance please tell them about our monthly Food Pantry. Every fourth Sunday of each month Romayne Eaddy, our hat lady, will collect a special offering after worship service to replenish our monthly food pantry. Please remember those in need.

Our Church Library

Come and enjoy your Cokesbury Library on Sunday mornings or during regular church office hours (Monday through Thursday 8:30 a.m.– 3:30 p.m.). The library is located in the Educa-tion Building across from the Women’s Rest-room and next to the Pastor’s office. The library has a wonderful variety of Christian books and DVDs for your entire family, including sections

devoted to Children, Youth, Fiction, Christian Living, Christian Growth, Reference, etc. To see a list of the books currently in the library, please v i s i t o u r o n l i n e c a t a l o g a t http://www.librarything.com/catalog/Cokesbury.

THANK YOUS TO COKESBURY

Jimmy and I would like to thank everyone who sent

cards or who called to express their sympathies for the

passing of his sister, Peggy Shipman Cook. All of your

prayers and kind thoughts were very much appreciated.

Jimmy and Sue Shipman

“Thanks Be To God” for a loving and caring Cokes-

bury Family.

Thank you for the cards, phone calls, prayers and con-

cerns during the passing of our mother, Annie Mae Ganis.

A special thanks to Pastor Megan for organizing and

assisting in our mother’s funeral.

Thanks to the members of Cokesbury for serving a meal

for our family after the service.

In Christian Love, The Ganis Family.

WE ALWAYS NEED MORE SOAP!

Thanks to all of you who have given soap to this on going ministry. Each month Cokesbury UMC furnishes 50 to 60 bars of soap to the community supported Shalom Ministries. You may also chose to give money toward the soap ministry. For more information on this important outreach ask Marian Gentry.

Notes from the Music Ministries.

You are invited to enjoy “Cokesbury’s Best” on Sunday, June 2, at 4:00 pm, in our church sanctuary. No admission will be charged but a donation to help defray the cost of our children’s choir members partici-pation at the Music and Worship Arts Camp at Lake Junaluska this summer would be a blessing.

You may contact Eszter with your questions or your comments at [email protected], or call the church office or my cell phone: (843)513-6443. Thank you.

HOME BOUND COMMUNION

Home Bound Ministries would be pleased to serve communion to anyone who is homebound. If you are home bound (or know someone who is) and would like to receive communion from Cokesbury please contact Sue Shipman at 552-7239.

The Yah Yah’s (Young at Heart) are

having a PICNIC in June! Bring your

favorite sandwich and all else will be

provided. On Wednesday, June 12, we

will meet at Cokesbury at 11:30 am and

carpool to Riverfront Park.

All are invited to come and be part of

this time of fun, food and fellowship.

Sue and Dave Bird have a new grandson,

Peyton David Frost, born on April 17.
